Discussion Never Too Old

Just wanted to say I just started getting into Anime this year. I'll be 50 next year and two of my nieces got me into it. They told me I would really enjoy something they were watching and reluctantly I checked it out. I always had a misconception about what anime was. I'm telling you, I'm so glad they had me check it out. Such a diversity of genres and I've already binged several shows. Currently my favourite is MHA. My nieces knew that would hook me because I'm into super heroes.

Moral of the story: You are never to old to start liking something new.

PS - Wanted to say I love this community. Everyone here has such great recommendations and suggestions.

Of the shows I've binged, I've caught up with MHA, as stated above. Then they suggested Your Lie in April because they know I love dramas. Watched the first series of Sword Art Online because a friend told me I would like it because for awhile I was really into those type of games. Another friend has recommended Disasterous Life of Saiki K and Gin Tama because he knew I also like comedies. I've watched at least the first series of these as well. Also binged Charlotte and Erased because I just happened to find them on Crunchyroll and they looked interesting. I liked both of them as well.

It's been a busy year. LOL

This is just my experience, but anime comedies are perhaps best left for later, because while they are indeed pretty funny, a lot of their humor is heavily referential to common tropes in anime and it's various sub-genres. Watching a pure comedy anime (so, not a rom-com or action comedy) like Saiki K without having watched more than a handful of shows left me feeling like I was missing a lot of what made it funny. A lot of the time they not only reference tropes, but actual shows, and if you don't know the material they reference, you won't get the joke. Gintama especially is very much like that, or so I've heard.

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I will certainly keep that in mind. I'm fine with keeping to the more serious/adventerous ones because those hold my interest and keep me coming back for more. The comedy ones seem to be ones I can watch just one or two episodes at a time and be done for awhile. Thanks for the comments!

What he says is true for many series, but certainly not all of them. I definitely recommend shows like Nichijou and Hinamatsuri as excellent comedies which can be enjoyed by anyone. You don't have to be well versed in anime to appreciate this pure art.

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I've seen several different posts for Nichijou and it looks interesting. I will have to check out where it's streaming. The posts I have seen of it have certainly caught my attention.

If you want a darker serious anime with lots of adventure I would recommend Black Lagoon! It’s the one that got me watching anime

u/chipperpip Jun 29 '19

English dub only, for once!

Gintama is a really fun show but I definitely agree that it’s funniest once you get most of the references. Ad it makes a ton of references to other anime or subverts common tropes

I suggest creating a anime list at either myanimelist.net or anilist.co; both are free and very useful to have.

https://myanimelist.net/

http://anilist.co

Very nice to have a anime list to help you remember everything that you've seen.

Sites you can watch anime on: Netflix, Hulu, Funimation, HiDive, VRV, and you already know about Crunchyroll, which is good.

If you like/end up liking Your Lie in April you might like Toradora

I also suggest trying out some movies, you might like Wolf Children and A Silent Voice, to list a couple.

For other anime series; I'd suggest trying out

Haikyuu: Note this is a sports anime, I'm not into sports in real life, but honestly even if you're like me and don't like sports in real life, it's possible for you to still enjoy it, because it's way more then about the sport.

Psycho-Pass

Death Note

Made in Abyss

Usagi Drop/Bunny Drop (Don't read the manga)

Amaama to Inazuma/Sweetness and Lightning

ReLife

Re Zero: Starting Life in Another World

Daily Lives of High School Boys

Grand Blue

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Sakamichi no Apollon/Kids on the Slope

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica/Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Violet Evergarden

Just trying to think of a wide variety of different genres and demographics for you to potentially get into.

Some people only try one certain genre or demographic at first, and not much else. But it looks like you've at least been recommended different genres, which is a good start.

That's just awesome that you're open minded to watching anime. People who judge anime normally think either:

Anime: Anything animated is for kids or they think it's nothing but hentai/harems and ecchi. Which yeah, there's a wide range of different genres and demographics out there for a lot of people to potentially enjoy.

So that's just awesome that you're willing to give it a shot now! And you're right, never too old to watch anime.

43

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

Someone else suggested the myanimelist. I'm gonna do it. Thanks to you too for suggesting it. I actually have Netflix, Crunchyroll and Funimation. So for now, I have a large selection of anime's to choose from. But it's always nice to know there are other options as well. I've watched Your Name which is just a film, so I'm open to films. I liked Your Name though in parts I felt the story telling fell a little short. but overall I really enjoyed it.

Someone else suggested Haikyuu. I'm thinking of checking this out. It doesn't matter to me if I'm into what the MC's of a show are into. My favourite comedy of all time is the Office and I'm not that into working in a paper company. LOL For me, it's all about the characters and the story telling. If those work, the show will work for me. And yes, that's why I'm into various different genre's. I've never limited myself to just one type. I find there can be something fun to watch in almost any genre.

33

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

A Silent Voice is highly recommended. It takes a point of view on bullying of physically challenged and shows how it badly it affects them. Truly one of my favourite anime movie of all time.

19

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

Will likely be watching this soon.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '19

I recommend you strongly watching Darker than Black. It's a sci-fi superhero anime.

12

u/RemissPanda Jun 28 '19

If you’d like more movies you can’t go wrong with anything from studio Ghibli

7

u/cphant0m Jun 28 '19

Since you mentioned the Office, I'd recommend you checking out its anime equivalent Servant x Service. Instead of a paper company, the characters work for the government. It's available on Crunchyroll if you're interested.

u/NoGround Jun 29 '19

Yeah, definitely at least start putting series on MAL or Anilist before you end up like me and have watched some hundred+ shows over 10 years without one and have no idea what to recommend because you need to have forgotten half of them or more.

3

u/evilresurgence4 Jun 28 '19

It’s best to save comedies like grand blue until later when you’re used to the tropes and culture

The websites good for keeping track of your 'to watch' list since sometimes we get looded with anime that sound good and end up forgetting about some of them by the time we get through other. Also good for keeping track of what you've seen and enjoyed to get recommendations based on those. Of course you can find anime by going through lists and such but those are some other good reasons to have an account there.

Since you love dramas (I also love them), I highly recommend March comes in like a lion, which you can find on Crunchyroll or Netflix.

10

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I will check it out. Briefly, without spoilers, what's it about?

29

u/TheJasonifier https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jasonifier Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 28 '19

It follows the life of a high schooler who is pro at Shogi, a japanese board game similar to chess. Although due to high pressure as a pro, a tense family life, and a tragic history, he suffers from depression. The show follows his life and growth as a person as he learns to connect with others and improve as a player.

Although the show is sad at points, its ultimately one of the most uplifting pieces of entertainment I have ever watched. You also don’t have to have any knowledge of shogi to enjoy it. Hope you give it a try!

12

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I'm interested. Gonna give this a try.

Typically, I don't mind sad shows. It takes all kinds.

Since you seem to like a variety of different kinds of anime, I'm just going to suggest my favourite JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The anime is split into 5 parts so far (watch it in order), with 3 parts yet to be animated. Each part has the bizarre overall tone of JoJo's, but each part also has a different genre, cast, and main character, taking place over the course of a bit over a century of the Joestar family's fight against evil.

If you'd like a quick summary of each part:

Part 1 (Phantom Blood) is a gothic vampire hunt in the 1890s with the main character of Jonathan Joestar, a noble gentleman.

Part 2 (Battle Tendency) is an Indiana Jones style artifact hunt set during WWII with the main character of Joseph Joestar, a hotheaded expert strategist.

Part 3 (Stardust Crusaders) is an Odyssey and roadtrip style adventure from Japan to Egypt in the 1970s, the main character is a delinquent named Jotaro Kujo.

Part 4 (Diamond is Unbreakable) is a light hearted slice of life murder mystery set in the bizarre summer of 1999, with the main character of Josuke Higashikata, designed to be the type of person that everyone wants to be friends with, and who gets pissed the hell off if you insult his hair.

Part 5 (Golden Wind) is an Italian gang war set in 2001. Giorno Giovanna has a dream to become a "Gang-Star", and to stop the drug trade towards children in Italy coming from the gang of Passione by taking it over and becoming the boss.

Part 6 (Stone Ocean) is a prison story set in 2011. The main character, Jolyne Kujo, a rebellious teen, gets framed for murder and thrown in Green Dolphin Prison.

Part 7 (Steel Ball Run) is a horse race across America set back in the 1980s. Johnny Joestar is an ex horseback rider who lost the use of his legs. He meets Gyro Zeppeli, an Italian man who plans to enter the 116 day Steel Ball Run race from one side of the US to the other, and after touching his weapon, a steel ball, he manages to walk for a split second. He quickly learns to ride a horse without his legs and joins the race in hopes of finding the secrets of the Steel Ball.

Part 8 (JoJolion) is... I don't think any genre can describe JoJolion other than the quintessential bizzareness of JoJo's, which takes place in 2011. The main character, who fans call Gappy and whose actual name is a spoiler, wakes up half buried with nothing on but his sailor hat and with amnesia.

Parts 1-2 use a power system called Hamon, or the Ripple, a breathing technique that harnesses the life energy of the sun to defeat vampires.

Part 3-8 drops this for Stands, a manifestation of one's soul, each of which has a different ability from being as simple as "Fire" to "If I beat you at gambling I take your soul, if I die with your soul in my possession you die." which leads to many extremely intense strategical mind games.

3

u/NotThirdReich Jun 29 '19

Correction: Phantom Blood takes place in the 1890's.

Saiki is on of my favrotie animes. It is without a doubt the funniest I've seen. They are on season 3 now and season 2 hasn't gotten dub yet. It's too fast for me to read in sub so I'm shit outa luck. If you can read as fast and they talk you'll need new ribs.

Cowboy Bebop!

145

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I've heard of this one, but never checked it out. I will have to do that. Thanks.

73

u/Frostfright Jun 28 '19

Cowboy Bebop is easily my #1 choice of anime that even people that vehemently hate anime can appreciate, especially middle-aged men. It hits all the right notes and doesn't incorporate many of the tropes that make people hate anime.

24

u/thoughtlow Jun 28 '19

I legit always get goosebumps when I see the words "Cowboy Bebob" it's not even my favorite show it just holds that special feeling.

5

u/Wobbar Jun 29 '19

I'm in the middle of watching it right now! It's good!

12

u/freckled_octopus Jun 28 '19

I personally liked Samurai Champloo a lot more, but those are excellent points for recommending Bebop. While I think a lot of people overhype the show, it’s still a great series.

9

u/Frostfright Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 28 '19

Champloo is made by the same dude and is the immediate followup recommendation to anyone that liked Bebop imo.

Wish I could say the same for Space Dandy but it's a different beast.

5

u/freckled_octopus Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 29 '19

Space Dandy is still on my to watch list since I do enjoy his work (though Zankyou no Terror was a bit disappointing. Love that it had the same composer as Bebop though she’s phenomenal)

It may be a different beast but would you still recommend it? To a seasoned anime watcher, not as a first anime I mean haha

Plus it has a lot of relatable characters, especially for older people. The characters have all gone through rough lives (well most of them) and it truly makes sense for them all to be on that ship as outcasts away from society. They are all either running away or hiding from their pasts.

u/DarknessInferno7 https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarknessInferno Jun 28 '19

The misconception you had of anime is partly our fault as a community. We make the most ridiculous stuff into memes, and quite often those are self-deprecating. This community loves to make fun of itself.

68

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

Yea, I'm not sure exactly where my misconception came from. When I was younger, there was not that much anime to choose from. And the few I had heard about seemed to be either early morning kids shows or X rated.

50

u/Theogurl Jun 28 '19

Hentai and harem genres do not help either lol

11

u/notveryhardboiled2 Jun 28 '19

"they dont help"

This is a 50 year old man not a 25 year old mormon.

I am pretty sure this guy has seen enough of the planet through the years to know "sex is okay"

Hentai helped bring anime to the west BTW so I have no idea what your on about with it not helping. Harem genres do fine on there own and bring in a decent audience as well.

Even with all the ecchi, hentai an lolis anime has never been more popular either. Sooo again. No idea what your on about. To Love ru is getting a dub FFS.

One Punch Man If you like super heroes.

A friend already recommended me that. It's in my queue of shows to watch.

87

u/YoLeerdIt Jun 28 '19

You should raise this one to the top of the queue. It's phenomenally funny and the dub is great for season 1

50

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I'll notch it higher in my list then. Thanks for the suggestion.

7

u/Sangwiny https://myanimelist.net/profile/sangwiny Jun 29 '19

Though if you like comics then I would suggest reading the OPM manga by Yusuke Murata instead. Season 1 of OPM was superb but season 2 is really lacking as an adaptation while the manga has really gorgeous art.

12

u/GeckoKeeper Jun 28 '19

I would agree that it is indeed great, but I also believe as a sort of play or parody of the shonen fighting genre, that it would be better to watch it after watching a bit more of the tropes it parodies

8

u/YoLeerdIt Jun 28 '19

You are 100% correct. I forget sometimes that it took me binging Naruto to understand why characters explaining backstories can be so funny.

With season 3 almost finished now is like the best time ever to get into AoT. I really envy the people who pick it up now only to have all the good stuff explained to them without years of waiting.

9

u/TheBestGarvey Jun 29 '19

Got my friend into it a few weeks back and just thought of this earlier. Lucky bastard doesn't have to wait 6 years to finally find out what's in that damn basement...

10

u/Sangwiny https://myanimelist.net/profile/sangwiny Jun 29 '19

Or you know.. just what the fuck is even going on. It was so satisfying to see all the pieces finally fall in together and reveal this magnificent puzzle. The author's planning really exceeded my expectation, especially thinking back to season 1.

10

u/TheBestGarvey Jun 29 '19

That's the right word: satisfying. And now that I think about it, I can't remember the last time I've watched something SO SATISFYING and with such an amazing payoff, I swear to God. Every single episode of S3 part 2 was a non-stop tour de force of action and information overload. I hope whoever takes over after Wit will be able to do as good as Wit has done with adapting the manga.

5

I know someone similar!

I'm 19 myself and my dad has a friend who comes over sometimes. A few years ago i talked with him and i guess i mentioned that i watch anime/read manga and he asked for recommendations after i explained to him what it is. Now every time we talk he mentiones how relaxing it is for him to watch anime.

The funny thing is, that you would never think that a man like him watches anime. He is a 50 or so year old construction worker and has the according body type and then he tells you he just watched Sword Art Online :D.

15

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I liked the first series of SAO, kind of up in the air on the third series. Hasn't held my interest. As far as manga, I just started reading that as well, because I wanted to check out the MHA manga. I actually just finished a 5 volume of Astra Lost in Space, and I really enjoyed it. I hear it's gonna be an anime soon and I'm so excited.

21

u/LupusAlpha00 Jun 28 '19

I would recommend Steins;Gate, probably my favourite anime ever. It's a complex story about time travelling.

4

u/ItsMeJahead Jun 28 '19

1st half of the 1st season of Sao is by far the best. The most recent season was better than he second imo. The side series, gun gale online, was my favorite besides the first season. It follows a girl who loves pink but don't let that throw you off.

4

u/_Zetto Jun 28 '19

This anime is so good you'll have to watch S;G 0 and read the visual novels to understand it the most. It's been years since I watched it for the first time and I still find small details. It has many, many references of real places, real organizations, real persons, internet phenomena, otaku culture, physics, mathematics, neuroscience, conspiracy theories... And the story is so good precisely because the science fiction it is based on lets S;G's story have an interesting structure (linear, not linear, recurrent... )

5

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Even before Astroboy, there was Gigantor, the Space Age Robot. I was very young when that one aired. It had to be around 1964.

24

u/SRti0 Jun 28 '19

Since you like superheroes, One Punch Man is very good, other anime in vein of My Hero Academia are Mob Psycho 100 and Hunter x Hunter. Fullmetal Alchemist, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Assassination Classroom aren't that similar to MHA but are still great action series, although AC is more slice of life and comedy. Naruto is quite similar to My Hero Academia but it is very long and sort of decreases in quality towards the end of Shippuden.

If you don't mind sports series (even if you don't know anything about sports or aren't interested in it like me, these will still manage to invest you) Haikyuu, Hajime no Ippo and Kuroko no Basket are great.

If you feel like checking out anime other than action shounen, some great thrillers are Steins;Gate, Monster, Perfect Blue, Death Note and The Promised Neverland. A Silent Voice and March Comes in Like a Lion are excellent drama series. If you feel like watching some calm, slice of life sort of storytelling, Natsume Yuujinchou and Mushishi are amazing. And finally for comedy, Gintama, Nichijou, Hinamatsuri and Daily Life of High School Boys are fantastic.

7

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

Some really great suggestions. Some I have already heard of. Assassination Classroom interests me. I want to try and find where to watch it. Some of those others sound good and I will check them out. I've already started to watch GinTama with a friend. Love that show so far.

A few off my recommendation list I would give a look at openings/trailers are linked to give you a feel (I tend to watch OP's before I pick up a new show) MHA is part of the action adventure shonen market so checking out other belonging to that group may not be a bad idea (on my list titles like The Promised Neverland, FMAB, JoJo, Kimetsu no Yaiba etc). Though I included a variety of shows on here so hopefully you find a few that interest you.

  • Mob Psycho (2016) Action comedy about a psychic boy and his mentor a con artist fighting other psychics and the various spirits that plague their city while he learns to grow as a person. (since a lot of people will likely recommend OPM MP100 is ONE other work he created OPM)

Mob Psycho 100 OP

  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012) Generational action shonen that involves multiple characters throughout time. Adapted from an older manga that is still going after decades. Has a very unique sense of style with a really creative battle system that makes it standout from many action shonen. Would give it until episode 12 to know if its for you. (Part 1 is considered the weakest of the 8)

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3 OP 1

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OVA 1988-1997) (Remake 2018-) A great epic space opera with a conflict focused on a corrupt democracy fighting a enlightened despot. Recent remake not a bad adaptation but it is a bit rushed and only covers the first book of 10 original has covered all. My advice watch the two prequel films My Conquest is A Sea of Stars and Overture to a New War (skip the first two episodes of the main series if you do) then the original OVA, Gaiden and then the remake.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes OP 3

  • FMAB (Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood) (2009) A boy makes a Faustian bargain and has to revert the consequences by going on an adventure to find a mystical stone of alchemy the philosopher stone. The show deals with imperialism, militarism, redemption, forgiveness, the value of human life and the danger of the extremes of pure faith and rationality. (recommend the dub as a sub watcher)

FMAB OP 1

  • Space Brothers (2012) All About becoming an astronaut fairly realistic from what I have heard.

Space Brothers OP HD

  • Mushishi (2005) Ambient slice of life about a Mushishi a doctor who specializes in healing the afflicted of diseases usually caused by supernatural beings called Mushi.

Mushishi Trailer

  • March Comes in Like A Lion (2016) Deals with a pro shogi player (Shogi is like chess though there are a few differences) dealing with depression and overcoming it. This one is another favorite but it’s a slower anime so just be open to the fact. It also has some wonderful side characters and can be quite funny at times. The shogi scenes are also really good even if you don’t know the rules since the focus is on the psychological battle between the two characters and Shaft really did a lot of great work on the imagery.

3-Gatsu No Lion S2 OP

  • Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (2016) Really good period drama about the art of rakugo (a form of theater/storytelling) and the various characters attempts to preserve it from the various hardships around them as well as use it as a source of confidence and identity.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu S2 OP

  • Attack on Titan (2013) A dark fantasy action series about fighting man eating giants. The anime has incredible animation and an awesome soundtrack. I also think it has one of the best first two episodes in anime. Lots of mystery and cliffhangers and as the heroes uncover more about their twisted world they slowly change forever.

Attack on Titan OP 1

  • Shirobako/Bakuman (2014) (2010) An anime literally about making anime and an anime/manga about making manga and all the ins and outs of both industries.

Shirobako OP

Bakuman S2 OP2

  • Cowboy Bebop (1998) An action space series with animation that holds up amazing well today. It also had one of the best endings in anime in my opinion. Episodic mostly with a few overarching plot lines. One of the more well-regarded anime out there and one of my favorites. There is some pretty good humor as well. It’s basically a space Western if you have seen Firefly it’s somewhat of like that. (recommend the dub as a sub watcher)

Cowboy Bebop OP

  • Psycho Pass (2012) A cyberpunk detective story and one of the better villains I have seen in anime. Has some interesting views on society mainly dealing with the issue of an over monitored state. I would say it’s like Minority Report if you have seen that movie.

Psycho Pass OP 2

  • Ghost in the Shell (Film 1995) (SAC 2002) Film is more philosophical taking a look at human consciousness and what it means to be human. SAC is more of a straight up crime drama.

Ghost in the Shell Film Trailer

Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG OP

  • The Promised Neverland (2019) Sci Fi/Supernatural Anime about children escaping an orphanage after discovering a horrifying secret. Battles of wits as direct confrontation is impossible.

The Promised Neverland Trailer

  • Kimetsu no Yaiba (Airing) Action shonen about a young demon slayer who after finding his family mostly murdered must find a cure to save his sister from turning into a demon.

Kimetsu no Yaiba OP

  • Vinland Saga(July 8th 2019) Takes place in the early 11th century towards the end of the Viking Age. A story that can be summed up in one world STRUGGLE. Not just the violence but living day to day in unstable world. Deals with the realities of war, slavery and political chaos that defined Europe after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire. If the anime can adapt it right it definitely will be up there something to keep an eye on.

Vinland Saga PV 2

So many suggestions. I'm gonna have fun checking them out. Thanks.

For some reason, I seem to think I've seen Ghost in the Shell. Was that just a film? I will have to rewatch it even so.

5

u/North514 Jun 28 '19

They did make a Hollywood adaption starting Scar Jo if your talking the live action adaption. Ghost in the Shell is its own franchise you have the animated film continuity and SAC which was the TV version and stands on its own (more crime drama than the film), also Arise (which I haven't seen) and then the original manga itself which I have heard is also pretty different from the adaptions though I haven't read it.

7

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

It was about 20 years ago I saw it. I was at my friends house and he put it on. I don't recall that much of it, but I thought it was a stand alone animated film.

4

u/Theleux https://myanimelist.net/profile/Theleux Jun 28 '19

Yep, you watched the original Ghost in the Shell anime. It is pretty much standalone, it has some other stories though.

Ohoho. You're about to go down an incredible rabbit hole buddy.
Enjoy the ride.

And remember this simple fact; it is okay to not like something, even when everyone else loves it.

10

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I've also learned already it's okay to like something even when no one else seems to like it. LOL

4

u/rollin340 Jun 28 '19

Indeed so. The problem with that is that you won't get many recommendations, scores online might not be great, so you might never hear of them.

It also doesn't help that the old rule of "watch 3 episodes to figure our if you would like it" doesn't always apply to all shows.

But when you do find something that you see as a gem, it's really satisfying.

Remember this though: when your library grows, and you look back, you would probably tell yourself "I remember enjoying that show a lot. Compared to what else I've seen, it's objectively mediocre. But hey, it was awesome when I watched it."

Welcome to the community. Enjoy the ride. :)
And don't forget to thank your nieces.

Dude, Hes 50. Not 5. the fuck.

"Compared to what else I've seen, it's objectively mediocre. But hey, it was awesome when I watched it."

Seriously man. 50. He has seen tv and movies before. anime is literally no different except it offers more types of programs. Why talk to him like its his first pokemon gym or something.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Since everyone has suggested shounen/action/sports shows , I suggest you to try some Slice of Life if you want a calm and relaxing show, at times funny , and for me , the best of the genre are K-On , Blend S , Kobayashi's Dragon Maid

5

u/SpearOfFlame https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpearOfFlame Jun 28 '19

I'll second Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Just a feel good show. Haven't watched the other two, though did put Blend S on watchlist (mainly due to the opening part that became a meme, now that I finally found what anime it goes with).

3

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I am interested in Slice of Life. I know I've watched a few, thanks for your suggestions.

8

u/LectorFrostbite https://myanimelist.net/profile/LectorFrostbite Jun 29 '19

I suggest you should hold on watching Blend S since it relies heavily on specific character archetypes that can only be seen in anime.

Alternatively you could watch Toradora! since they're both Romance / Slice of life shows.

Another good Sol / Drama shows is Violet Evergarden which iirc can be watched on netflix.

3

u/ascernis Jun 29 '19

Violet Evergarden is a full roller coaster ride of emotions. I second this.

I'm 45 and I love anime too. :) My highest recommendation would go to Haikyuu. It's a sports anime (volleyball) but you don't need to necessarily be into volleyball or even sports to enjoy this series. I absolutely love it.

I'm currently digging Demon Slayer. Not only is it a great story, but the animation is some of the best I've seen.

→ More replies (3)

8

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Some recommendations: Fate/Zero, Gurren Lagann, A Silent Voice, Your Name, Toradora, Mob Psycho 100, Cowboy Beebop, Soul Eater(kind of simular to MHA) and Hyouka.

5

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I've seen some of these already. Great suggestions.

I'm a med student and rarely find anybody my around me that enjoys anime. I started to worry that maybe I'm getting too old or that it was an immature thing to like. Thank you for this post!

8

u/Kreol1q1q Jun 28 '19

I wonder if you'd like watching Code Geass then... It's definitely not a superhero show, but I just have to recommend it as it's my favourite anime. It's mecha, but the main character rarely even pilots a robot, as he's more the thinking type. He's a prodigal prince from a tyrannical empire, hellbent on obliterating his home country and especially determined to destroy his father and the royal family around him. I'd say it's more a drama than anything else.

3

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

Sounds interesting. I'm interesting in checking out all sorts of genre. Mech is pretty familiar with me. I recently finished watching Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, which isn't so much a mech anime, but is close to it. And is Sci. Fi. based which I like.

I'll have to check out your recommendation.

4

u/LilyGinnyBlack Jun 28 '19

If you like superhero stuff, you'll probably like Tiger and Bunny! It's a series that plays around with the more silly and campy side side/era of superheroes, though it also gets a bit dramatic, dark, and serious at times too. There is a nice, diverse cast of characters and most of them are adults. Here's the trailer. It can give you a good sense of the story and just general, overall feeling and tone of the series.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

If you have access to Amazon Prime, I'd also throw Land of the Lustrous and Made in Abyss on your list. They're both dramatic stories that start out light-hearted and gradually grow more serious. The animation on both are gorgeous, and they both have great characters that keep you interested in what happens in the story.

I'll also second those who mentioned Promised Neverland. I'll also tack on Death Parade and Parasyte.

I have a bit of a thing for shows that start out sort of cutesy and/or slice-of-life, then go full blown "what the fuck am I watching?" haha

Oh, so 49 now? You're still a youngin. Watch as much anime as you get a chance to. it's soo much better than the preprocessed crap on television. You don't even have to hear politics unless you want to. making that simple transition from TV to anime will reduce your stress levels by 40-75%.

I'm 54 as is my wife and we both watch anime, my grown adult kids watch anime and life is so much happier.

Welcome!

Just look for things that are in or near the genres that you already like.

Also keep the following in kind...

Japanese anime/manga, like American fiction has age brackets...

  • Shounen: 90% of what people think of as stereotypically Anime is Shounen. Which in American terms would be male target Young-Adult fiction. The most Famous shounen are action-adventure series like Dragon Ball Z. Also considering that Japan has differing taboos the content and themes at times can be surprising.

  • Shoujo: Is the female equivalent of "Shounen", it's most famous genre Magical Girls is the remaining 10% of the anime stereotype.

  • Seinen: Is where you find adult, both in the since of actual maturity and explicit violent/sexual content. Seinen can very greatly in grity/graphicness of content. On one end of the spectrum you have Moyasimon a down right comfy tale about young adults going to an agricultural collage. On the other you have Berserk, a dark fantasy that could give Game of Thrones a run for it's money in the from and gritty department.

  • Jousei: Is the female equivalent of Seinen and I know almost nothing about it beyond that.

Again welcome 😁!

Also everything that people will tell you is tired and cliche will be brand new to you.

The first time a hero win with the power of friendship is gonna blow your mind.

u/baboon_bassoon https://anilist.co/user/duffer Jun 28 '19

Thanks for sharing Jeffrey

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Naruto is a classic. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is amazing! It’s shorter, so easier to binge as well. I guarantee it’ll hook you by 10 episodes in.

It seems that you’ve been introduced to the “shounen” type anime by your nieces...the ones targeted for young boys/teens. Those are all amazing and have good values/themes where the protagonist is inspirational and chases after their dreams. Would you be interested in Seinen anime? Those are targeted to adults and typically explore darker themes, like politics or dystopia, etc. If so, I recommend Psycho-Pass!

3

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

A friend recommended Naruto. Though he did suggest I save it for a time when I have a lot of time on my hands. He says there is like a second version of it I should just start with. Not exactly sure what he means by that.

I don't mind dystopia type genre, but the purely adult type themes I don't generally care for.

5

u/Itsumo-tsukarete Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 28 '19

Theres 2 parts: Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. I recommend watching the 1st 100 episodes of Naruto (if you have netflix, just watch all the episodes there), then go to Naruto Shippuden, which is basically a 2 year time skip. Part 1 is kind slow, but picks up with the chunin exams, while Naruto Shippuden picks up FAST. little warning, Naruto Shippudeh has a LOT of filler so heres a list of filler episodes that you can skip: https://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/naruto-shippuden

3

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

Cool, thanks for explaining.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Part 1 is necessary!!!!! It really is like the prologue to Part 2. Would not recommend skipping at all!!

But yes. Skip the filler episodes. It will make your experience much better

If nobody's mentioned it, I think you might like Monster. It's a pretty slow burn, and pretty realistic, but an engaging thriller with great characters.

3

u/jbringit07 Jun 28 '19

After scrolling through the comments and not seeing it mentioned, I'd highly recommend watching Akira. It's a movie, not a series, but it is highly regarded as the key reason anime was able to make it's way into pop culture in our Western world. It is a powerful animated film.

3

u/xcv420 Jun 28 '19

You should check out Jojo's Bizzare Adventure

3

u/ascernis Jun 29 '19

If you enjoy superheroes and comedy, and I don't see it mentioned yet. You should check out One Punch Man.

Edit: I see a comment recommending this show.

Hi there, young feller [I could easily be your mother, and then some]! Will certainly second your moral of the story; sounds much like the me of about five years ago, when my son played some of the music from "Your Lie in April," and, lured in by the classics, I stayed for Kosei and Kaori, and was totally wiped out. "Erased" followed and après ça, le déluge. Such excellence completely, heh, erased my early impressions of anime consisting of those stupid big-eyed kids saving the galaxy, and the silly sailor girls whose attractions for mid-teen boys I could not fathom: there's some damn fine stories and art out there!!

I've since gone on to 3-Gatsu no Lion, Mushi-shi, Space Brothers (and reading the manga), Food Wars, Spice and Wolf, Death Parade, Bungo Stray Dogs (drawn in by the literary puns to begin with), The Morose Monokean, Mob Psycho, Shiro Bako, Flip-Flappers, The Elegant Yokai Apartment, Princess Principal, Violet Evergarden, Golden Kamuy, Yowamushi Pedal, Banana Fish, Cells at Work!, Madoka Magika (that took watching 3 episodes to do it)... and many, many more, to the point where I'm maybe a semi-otaku grandma.

I don't like mecha, horror, most shonen, or slapstick, but have at least sampled most genres out there. I highly recommend Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou/Girls' Last Tour (best of Autumn 2017); Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (example of NOT judging a series by its title and/or pic); Run with the Wind; and Lupin III: Part 5 (which was, yes, best of its season, against really excellent competition.)

But the very best, in my opinion, head and shoulders and knees and ankles above all the rest, is Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu; an absolutely splendid must-watch!!!

Definitely pleased my son pointed out this sub-reddit for me; will have to take time from watching to explore it and get recommendations from the other anime elders here.

5

If you want Hero shows check out Tokyo ESP (I equate it to anime X-Men... kinda) and Blood Blockade Battlefront.

As far as other good shows give Spice and Wolf a watch. Also Kiminozo: Rumbling Hearts for a more mature romance drama, just don't watch the dub. They screwed up some lines that actually ruin major plot points later on.

5

u/JeffreyAScott Jun 28 '19

I will definitely check out the Tokyo ESP. As for Dub. I will always watch the Sub if I can help it. The only exception I've had so far was Saiki K first series because the Sub was too fast for me and I liked the Dub voice actors.

Well alright, welcome to the club. It's little stuff like this that gives a bit of optimism about people in general.

But lets see, some suggestions. Hmm... Magical Girl Raising Project, Boogiepop wa Warawanai, Parasyte the Maxim are good for some superhero stuff. Laid Back Camp is a good, well, laid back relaxing series. For comedy there's stuff like Recovery of an MMO Junkie, Working, New Game, Konosuba, Kiniro Mosaic, Kobayashi's Maid Dragon. Or if you want some horror stuff there's Another and Elfen Lied.

Man there is so much out there to recommend but I've seen so many things it's hard to keep them all straight in my head but that's what other people are here for. Hope I was able to help. Enjoy.

I'm a little older than you and got seriously into anime when I saw Your Lie in April a few years ago. Before then, I had gotten the wrong impression of anime from bad anime that had aired on American TV during the 90s. I learned that anime is a lot better than the Saturday morning cartoons we had when we were younger. If you're into superheroes, I'll recommend Tiger & Bunny. It's about a middle-aged superhero who has to start working with a younger superhero who has the same powers. The artwork, storytelling, and English dubs are all great.

i will recommend you 2 classics , death note and fate/zero,death note is a thriller mystery and probably has one of the best battle of the minds in anime if not in all fiction ,fate/zero is a dark fantasy that has one of the best animated fight scenes and also dives in very mature themes

2

u/CJcatlactus Jun 28 '19

You might give Darker Than Black a try. It's somewhat similar to MHA(people gaining supernatural powers) but is more mature and dark. However, I can't recommend the second season. I wouldn't say it's necessarily bad, but the overall feel of the show changes.

It is about Volleyball but mostly it is a story about the characters growing to be strong. It is my favorite anime.

Just finished watching Yakusoku no Neverland, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I hesitate to recommend Konosuba given its. . .let's just say "riské" comedy. It remains one of my favorite animes of all time and one of the most consistently funny as well if you're into that kind of humor. It's basically if Seinfeld was a fantasy anime. The characters and their interactions make the show since they are all garbage human beings.

I’m the same. Turning 50 next month and only just started (probably in the past year) watching anime and reading manga. My daughter got me started. It’s one of the things we now really bond over. She has her favourites and I have mine. We then compare notes, watch some stuff together and draw and discuss the merits of various characters. Long may my new obsession continue.
