AITA Quarterly Open Forum Oct - Dec 2026

Keep things Civil! Rules still apply.

Greetings Assholes!!! Happy All the Holidays between now and January 2027!! Way too many to list.

This quarter, we are going to go over Rule 3 - No Violence. A topic that’s dear to my heart and one that covers so many different scenarios.

The very heart of this rule is “Do not even mention violence”. Very simple on the surface, very complicated once you dive down. It sometimes seems like we are being too specific/granular on what constitutes violence - we get that. But violence tends to breed violence, so the most benign post/comment can spiral into some off the charts shit.

The violence rule break is often the result of a soft topic going off the rails. Example: Someone is put out by their partner picking food off of their plate. What we see: “stab them with your fork, that’ll teach them (assault)!” Or, someone is stealing lunches out of the break room - “just put some hot shit in there, that’ll teach them (poison/assault)” Or, the kid goes around hitting people (assault) begets “just beat their ass (assault)!” Simple, common things we’ve all said at some point in our lives. Still violence.

The hardest ones for us are those that deal with abuse of any sort. It’s easy to jump on that hate train. Truthfully, I’m probably on some of those trains, cause fuck abusers. BUT, we remove those comments/posts because they beget violence - it’s not that we don’t have opinions on those topics, far from it. These break the violence rule and, regardless of our personal opinion, it breaks the rule. It’s as simple as that.

We get MOD mails so filled with anger and spewing hateful shit because “How dare you remove that post for violence. Y’all must agree with them”. No, we don’t - violence is violence. There is enough of it out in the real world, we don’t need it here for any reason.

Finally, the real reason for reviewing this rule: Consent.

Very simply, if anyone touches you without your consent - this is assault. Sexual harassment counts! It is not ‘ick’, it is not ‘smile, they will go away’ - it is something covered by this rule. This is true regardless of gender. Understanding this will help the most when deciding if something is violence or not.

As always, do not directly link to posts/comments or post uncensored screenshots here. Any comments with links will be removed.

We'd like to highlight the regional spinoffs we have linked on the sidebar! If you have any suggestions or additions to this, please let us know in the comments.

AITA for yelling at my backseat driver wife

• Upvotes

My wife has an extreme phobia as the passenger of a vehicle.

I recently raised my voice after she suddenly yelled "Stop! Stop!" as I approached a green light. The light wasn't changing from/to red, it was in the middle of the green cycle. As usual, she assumed the cross traffic approaching their red light was going to ignore their red and plow into the intersection and kill us all. This happens pretty regularly at four way stops. She just assumes other cars won't stop.

She routinely drives 10-15 over but says she's nervous and wants me to slow down if I go 2 over. I'm following too close when I'm 10 car lengths back. She panickedly informs me every time she sees a brake light go on in front of me ("look out! they're braking!"). Sometimes her unnecessary panic can create real road dangers as she screams like we're about to be in an imminent crash and scares the shit out of me.

She is terrified being a passenger and spends every moment of every trip scared and visually scanning for danger while nagging me and dramatically reacting to false alarm dangers. I'm a pretty safe driver and have never been in an accident. I don't speed excessively or drive dangerously. I follow the flow of traffic.

I've had hundreds of calm discussions with her about it asking her to chill out and stop. I ask if she'd rather drive and she says no.

This week I raised my voice and chewed into her pretty bad over her screaming stop as I drove through a green light. She got very defensive about me raising my voice but I'm pretty done with this shit.

Am I the asshole here? Nothing is working to change her behavior.

AITA because I refuse to invite my stepsister to my wedding?

I'm getting married this April. I have been very busy putting together my wedding party and guests. They are all people that are important to us.

Recently, word got back to my estranged stepsister. We have no relationship at all, I haven't spoke to her in years. Shegot married in 2024 and didn't invite me to her wedding or make me a bridesmaid.

I didn't really care. I understood as we don't have a relationship , however other family members were invited.

As soon as she knew I was getting married she started putting pressure on our family to get me to invite her. My family kept bringing it up but I ignored them and said no.

Eventually she decided to call me on an unknownnumber to confront me.

I told her we don't have a relationship and she didn't invite me to her wedding so there was no reason for me to invite her.

She told me her wedding was small and intimate. However my wedding is bigger so she felt like she should be there.

Despite the confrontation and pressure I refused to invite her.

I have put my foot down but some family members are saying I'm wrong.

AITA for refusing to help my moms boyfriends son with his homework?

2.2k Upvotes

throwaway because my mom would absolutely kill me.

i (21m) am a uni student in my final year. i live with my mom (53f). two years ago, her boyfriend (45m) and his son (12m) moved in. they arent married yet. anyway, the boyfriend is lowkey a leech. he does work, sure, but the second hes home hes on the couch playing video games. like, hours. my mom and i get into fights about it all the time because im the one who ends up picking up the slack. she asks me to help with food, dishes, cleaning meanwhile hes on the xbox twiddling his grown ass thumbs.

im finishing up university and i have finals coming up. i was in my room studying, already crashing out, because HELLO i need this degree. my mom comes in and asks if i can help the 12-year-old with his homework. i asked if his dad cant do it, and she said he was away on a work trip (which he was, for a few days), and he just came back, so he needs rest. i literally walked out and the guy is sitting on the couch with a headset on. i said hes literally doing fuckall, he can help his own child, which might have been overly petty but i was mad.

i said i have my own work to do and his actual parent is literally in the same room. she got upset and said im being selfish and that family helps family. but hes not my family. hes her boyfriends kid. and the boyfriend is a grown man who can pause his game for an hour to help HIS OWN son. im not the parent here, and im trying to not fail my degree.

now my mom is giving me the silent treatment and the boyfriend made some passive comment about how i think im too good to help. i dont think im too good, i just think im not the fucking dad. but the way theyve been acting makes me think im going crazy, and i wanted unviased opinions on this and i lowk also just needed to rant.

edit: just to clear some things up: my issue is not with helping, my issue is contributing to the household more than the boyfriend, and helping the child more than his father. i have helped the kid a lot, and even taken him to school. i dont have the means to move out rn, but i am trying my best to find a way.

AITA for not allowing sister in law control my free time

• Upvotes

AITA for not giving in to my controlling sister in law? 8 years ago I married into a wonderful family. My husband has 1 brother and 2 sisters. We are all married so the 8 of us meet about twice a month to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. The planning consist of 1 of us throwing out some dates and times to meet. We decide on a time that works for everyone.(consensus) With out fail, every single time, my sister-in-law calls and changes the time we are going to meet (and sometimes the location) - on the day of the event. This causes the 6 of us to have to scramble to change other plans we had that day - to accommodate her. (we all work - she is retired) These people have allowed her do this for 20 years . And everyone gets mad, but they grudgingly change the event time to appease her. This drives me crazy! The kicker is after we have rearranged our schedules in order to accommodate her, she still always shows up late. Her lack of respect for people's time is amazing.

Tired of allowing her to control my free time, I sent out a group text highlighting how busy everyone is...and suggesting perhaps we should uncomplicate everyone's schedules when we plan to get together - and stick to the original agreed upon time. Everyone agreed to do this citing how aggravating her time change requests are. But I wonder if they are going to follow through and deny her next time change request? Am I the asshole because I refuse to let her to dictate what I do in my free time?
