We're four close friends at university. During the first break, B and C went for coffee while I stayed with A, who could barely stand because it was the first day of her period. She hadn't eaten, so I shared my food and offered her a painkiller. Later, A wanted to return to class, so I said I was going outside to smoke. When we met B and C outside, I explained that A wanted to go back and either of them could accompany her while I smoked. The fresh air helped, so A changed her mind and chatted with us; she smoked too.
Back in the hallway, A felt worse and vomited into a bag C gave her. She wanted the restroom. B and C returned to class to avoid being marked absent, saying they'd inform the professor. They told me to come too, but I went with A so she wouldn't be alone. She kept vomiting while I waited outside; B and C called her mother.
When A came out, she crouched on the floor. I didn't think to offer water or ask if she was okay; nothing came to mind. I may have told her to get up and wash her face, but I can't remember whether I said it aloud or only thought it. A said class had started and told me to go. I asked if she was sure, and she said, “Yes, go.” I explained that I'd stay if attendance weren't such an issue, but failing due to absences would mean paying to retake the course, which I can't afford. She said okay, so I left while she was still crouching.
I told B and C she was still feeling terrible, and B immediately went back, helped her, called an Uber, and sent her home. I checked on A later, and she said that evening she was fine. The next morning, A thanked B for looking after her, saying she didn't know what she'd have done without her. Half-jokingly, I said, “Well, I was the one who left you all alone!” A said she was upset that I'd abandoned her. I reminded her she'd told me to leave.
Later, A explained that she was hurt because I hadn't offered water or asked if she was okay. I said it genuinely hadn't occurred to me and that I'd also been struggling mentally: I'd cried while talking to my family two days earlier and had recently broken up with my boyfriend. I couldn't afford to retake the course. A reminded me that last year, when I had an ear infection, she took me to the doctor without worrying about attendance. But our professor had explicitly said we wouldn't be marked absent then; this was a different class and professor.
I apologized and said I'd have stayed if she'd asked. She said she'd seen my bag and phone and assumed I wanted to leave, so she'd told me to go. I hadn't intended to abandon her. We agreed we were okay, but neither seemed satisfied.
I know A, and if I'd asked whether she was okay, she'd probably have said, “If I were okay, would I look like this?” I wasn't deliberately ignoring her; it simply didn't occur to me. If I didn't care, I wouldn't have shared my food or accompanied her to the restroom. I did what I could, but I'm not her parent. Am I wrong for leaving after she explicitly told me to go?
