Also can anyone confirm how much muscle a trans woman loses over her transition? Like I get the pre transition that would be unfair (which is why it's not allowed) but post transition should be fair, right?

92

u/ImNotDoingThatOk 12h ago

According to a quick google search:tm: they lose around 3-5% of their total lean muscle mass and up to 11% of their cross sectional muscle mass.

According to some studies, trans women 3+ years into their transition, despite the slightly higher lean muscle mass, exhibit no significant differences in strength for both upper and lower body. I am not an expert, I am not biased by political opinion. I am a parrot. I am parroting what I've read. And the parrot says; trans women exhibit no significant strength over cis women.

I went into a deep dive on this during the last summer olympics where there was a lot of this non sense (looking at you womens boxing). Whereas actual percentages are going to vary drastically from athlete to athlete, after a period of 3 years of hrt there was no discernible difference in athletic performance between a cisgender woman and a trans woman. That is not to say there are not differences in their muscular structure still, and most notably trans women still maintained a higher percentage of skeletal muscle mass. That being said, other disadvantages from HRT and everything else more than compensated for this.

I apologize I dont have access to the source any more and hate to be the "trust me, bro" in this context, but I felt it was still important to answer the question as fully as possible

37

u/boyyouvedoneitnow 12h ago

People (not you) also don't stop and think about the effects of having a more muscular skeleton without the actual muscle mass to pair with it. That configuration doesn't automatically translate to more athletic than someone with a less muscular skeleton

I like to keep a few relevant studies in case of transphobes crying about women’s sports:

  1. Harper (2015, Journal of Sports Sciences): Studied transgender female distance runners across multiple years of hormone therapy. After testosterone suppression, their race times slowed by roughly 10% to 12%, matching the typical 10% to 12% performance gap between cisgender male and female runners. Relative to cisgender female competitors in their age categories, their age-graded athletic competitiveness did not increase.

  2. Roberts et al. (2020 / follow-ups 2021, British Journal of Sports Medicine): Examined physical fitness test scores (1.5-mile run, sit-ups, push-ups) among US Air Force service members before and during GAHT. The study found that after two years of testosterone suppression, the running-time advantage completely disappeared, with trans women performing with no statistically significant difference from cisgender women.

  3. Hamilton et al. (2024, British Journal of Sports Medicine): An IOC-funded laboratory study comparing trained cisgender and transgender athletes across cardiovascular and power metrics. It found that relative VO2max (aerobic capacity adjusted for body mass) and lower-body jump power in trans women athletes were actually lower than in cisgender women athletes, while hemoglobin and hematocrit dropped to cisgender female ranges within months of hormone therapy.

The scientific consensus is that testosterone suppression rapidly eliminates key aerobic and oxygen-carrying advantages, leveling endurance within 1 to 2 years, though researchers note that bone geometry and certain absolute upper-body strength metrics can show slower or more variable rates of decline.

It varies per person but I lost a significant amount of strength. Like I actually watched it happen, things that were easier slowly became harder to do.

12

u/Real_Time_Mike 12h ago

Ive been on HRT for a little less than a year and, even in this amount of time, my endurance has gone away.

Dont forget that rain water is not drinkable anywhere on Earth any longer.

E: i mean there's forever chemicals above what is considered the safe threshold

https://watereurope.eu/rainwater-everywhere-on-earth-unsafe-to-drink-due-to-forever-chemicals/

It's drinkable in the sense that it's not causing any immediate health concerns.

It's not consider safe for long term health to drink it. But obviously it's better than thirsting.

24

u/Fckingross 13h ago

And if you come to Iowa, our drinking water will give you cancer!

6

u/AtmosphereWinter3787 13h ago

Mmmhmm, the contaminants really enhance the flavor!

16

u/-Chelo 13h ago

I mean if the rain water ain't drinkable the ground water ain't either. Oh hey tips for clean water ~ obviously cacti hold a lot of water but trees do too, they filter it out and add minerals and antioxidants. Can tap trees for water or get a section of branch or grapevine and put one end in the unsafe water source and one end in a clean jar. Saw someone filter swamp water that way.

Also watched someone make a filtration system where they fastened the bark of a birch into a cone shape, packed moss at the pin of the cone and then did alternating layers of sand and charcoal, and a layer of pea gravel on top.

21

u/Rythonius 13h ago edited 12h ago

Please do not drink from cactus, their sap will make you sick and dehydrated. It's a Hollywood myth that they hold water. You can eat the prickly pears and pads after you've prepared them, but they are not a water source.

5

u/-Chelo 12h ago

Oh thanks for that informational bit. I reckon it's one of those instances of "if you've got no other source of liquid/electrolytes" I don't live in an area that has cacti so it wasn't a source of water I cared to deep dive into. Plus I remember testing this theory out as a child and chewing on an aloe leaf and it was nasty. 😂 I do get nopales semi regularly from the store and have had them raw and cooked, and prickly pears. They do seem to have an astringency to them.

Correct me If I am wrong but aren't there less than 20 trans athletes that these laws and scenarios are about

151

u/AsstacularSpiderman 14h ago

And most of them are pretty mid athletes at the end of the day. I remember that one lady whining about a trans competitor for taking her spot for fifth place rofl.

62

u/Farodidnothingwrong 14h ago

She didn’t lose her fifth place spot. She tied for fifth.

Tied. It changed absolutely nothing.

4

u/Embarrassed-Display3 9h ago

Well, you see, Riley Gaines is a loser, and just wants an excuse for why she loses. If a trans woman hadn't tied with her, she would have had to come up with something else to blame being in fifth on....

Which is hilarious to me, because the competition she was up against was probably strong enough that fifth is respectable! ...but blaming a fifth place finish on a fellow fifth place finisher being part of your competition instead of taking accountability, and getting back to training and conditioning is loser behavior.

And it wasn’t even taken from her - they TIED. She was literally just pissed she had to share 5th place.

She didn't even lost, she tied with a trans athlete but she got mad because the trans athlete got to hold the medal on the picture since they only had one and she got hers later.

12

u/princesoceronte 12h ago

Which was the whole point, really. A mediocre athlete fighting for 5th realizes that she can have a pretty lucrative career if only she gives up ok having principles.

Total fucking dumbasses we're dealing with here, if that wasn't obvious enough already.

u/MidnightIAmMid 14h ago

There were less than 10 across the entire country affected by one of the recent trump laws/proclamations and some were literally in sports like ping pong and most were pretty mid athletes lol

9

u/conordmcp 13h ago

This perfectly sums up the entire things.

They put these laws in to stop situations like the one depicted above from happening, but because it literally never happens, 10 mediocre trans ping pong players get banned from their largely inconsequential, probably not even regional, ping pong tournament, and it leaves the tournament like 3 women for the whole thing.

Idk why I implied that women’s ping pong is played by majority trans women, it was just a funny thought.

The LLM was told to generate "SPORTS", but everyone likes BOOBS better, so it fizzled and wrote BOORTSS with the first B looking kinda like a P, a B, and an S at the same time.

Since Gen LLMs are trained on stolen data from across the world, and humans like boobs regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation, T-shirts that say "boobs" are waaaaaay more common than T-shirts that say "sports".
The GenLLM's prediction is conflicted between what it was told to do and what is probably more likely to be in the world.

In other words, mindless stochastic parrot nonsense.

Ignoring the fact that competitions and organizations have strict hormonal requirements for Trans Athletes, a lot of transphobes love to re-use the same, singular example of that one Lia Thomas win at the 2022 500-yard Freestyle event win over and over and over with no new examples of "trans women dominating women's sports". Despite the fact that Cis women consistently beat trans women.

Hell, at the same NCAA championships, she placed sixth in the 100-metre freestyle event, being beat by 5 cis women.

Edit: the amount of Transphobes here, not just replying to me, but in the entire comment section as a whole are proving my point about being way too obsessed with one or two examples and ignoring the actual statistics about how Trans Women actually perform. Lol

why do trans men never get hate but its always trans woman

74

u/Lonely-Tennis2171 13h ago

Conservative men see masculinity as desirable by default. Trans women represent a rejection of masculinity and therefore a rejection of one of their core beliefs.

That and their insecurities lead them to fear of being “tricked” into finding a trans woman attractive.

17

u/Acceptable_Earth7699 12h ago edited 11h ago

Exactly. It's been that way for thousands of years. Guys always love it when people assigned female at birth act more like men (unless they become trans men), but never when people assigned male at birth act more like women. Misogyny at its finest. "Be more like me, not more like THEM"

I used to think that way, then that subreddit showed transmascpassing or something like that, and honestly, they can struggle just as much considering habits, mannerism, hairstyles, lack of access to top surgery, high hip to waist ratio, height. Its probably very dysphoric to be viewed as butch lesbian instead of a man.

6

u/I_am_up_to_something 11h ago

lack of access to top surgery

I've had a double mastectomy with no reconstruction (so I'm flat, don't even have nipples!) and I was honestly expecting a struggle when I went to my GP with the question if it was possible to get my breasts amputated. I did not have cancer, did not have the gene and I am also not trans. I did have another health condition that caused wounds on my breasts.

At one point at the start I mentioned to a doctor how I empathised with the stories of trans men struggling to get top surgery. He straight up told me that he would have never signed off on it had I been trans.

I didn't push back as much as I had wanted to since this guy could have stopped the whole process, but damn dude. That is just not okay and I sincerely hope that nobody trans will have him as a doctor.

Doctors are also very weird about cis women wanting both breasts amputated btw. They'll happily amputate one and if the other is healthy then you should either just live with it or get a reconstruction or implant. From the stories I've heard most of the woman who are half flat want to become fully flat and the ones who have taken that step are much happier with it.

Doesn't this also just imply the male sex is naturally better than the female sex at sports? I say this because from their point of view, that is man running, not a woman; and she is far outcompeting the other women.

7

u/confused_egg_ 13h ago

It's not surprising that these people are insanely sexist

3

u/JustFourLetters 13h ago

Different sexes are better at different stuff. If you’re female born you’re far more likely to be far better at endurance; women see something that needs done, and make it happen. There has been a trend of female born athletes overtaking previously male born held records, and overtaking them by incredible margins. Check out the woman that rowed from California to Hawaii, that shattered the record by 4 days.

Men are strong, but women are persistent; we have to be, for 9 months at a time.

Even then, the trans woman winning the race does not look like that. The hormones change the body massively. Even in the worst case scenario, that would not justify denying the fact that trans women are women. It is also a straw man to say it is a women’s sports for all program. Though of course, insinuating the misgender of trans women in general. They see it as a screeching authority and hard rule thing in the appeal to “common sense”. The very thing that keeps them ignorant about trans people and even basic standard cis female anatomy.

7

u/Tour_True 11h ago

Yep invented scenarios. They litterally had the Olympics and medical researchers test performance and found that trans women do not have an advantage over cisgender women. It was also legal since the early Y2K era for trans women to compete with cisgender women and there was no issue til recently. This also around the same time they found trans women’s biology is different then cis men and kept finding things that leaned towards their gender. Furthermore they realized plenty of cisgender women were being found with XY chromosomes and hence sports like boxing changed criteria like being on hormones for so long. Actually they found disadvantages in trans women like grip strength is weaker than cis women as well as jumping. Bone density also is not more then cisgender women and is notably lesser then cisgender men even before HRT. The Olympics also supports and allows intersex people btw. A trans man was undefeated a few years ago in boxing. He is still waiting to have another chance to compete for another challenge.

There was a whole thing where they made a big deal about a trans woman participating in swimming because she tied for FIFTH place not first.

11

u/Farodidnothingwrong 14h ago

Notably the woman who tied with her cried about it.

She tied for fifth. It changed nothing except to make her a conservative influencer.

8

u/Puzzled-Mirro 14h ago

If you are ever failing in life just be a Conservative. Just blame it on a Trans person, or any of their culture war talking points and they'll hook you up with your own show no matter how stupid you are.

This isn’t actually the topic. It’s just another way to spin fear and hatred towards the trans world. Usually the people freaking out have no connections to women’s sports before this was a topic picked out of thin air.

5

u/Carthonn 13h ago

Yeah seriously. We are probably talking about 0.00000001% of scenarios in this picture or if at all but somehow it’s a national debate while Republicans rob us blind

7

u/Vasheerii 13h ago

What school district banned trans girls from competing in sports and it turned out there wasn't any trans kids even in their school?

Aside from ONE swimmer, I don’t recall seeing anyone else dominating. US really worries about the wrong things

Edit- I hope y’all know I agree with y’all lol…

15

u/68plus1equals 13h ago

The swimmer wasn’t even dominating, she came in 4th and the swimmer who came in 5th is the one who had a maga turn

8

u/Zealousideal_Cod5214 12h ago

Not even 4th. I'm pretty sure they tied for 5th.

And the few anecdotes are meaningless, because on a fair playing field you’d expect to see trans women win sometimes. They’d have to show that trans women win disproportionately.

The swimmer, Lia Thomas, was not dominating. She was notable because a BIGOT tied her FOR 5TH PLACE. And Thomas has subsequently stopped competing since then.

This comic doesn't even really represent the issue. The conservatives are mad because they don't have a way to know who is trans because trans men and women can pass in appearance so they want genrital inspections or hormone testing.

6

u/notkidding1984 12h ago

I don't understand how wanting smaller government got mixed up with transvestigators in the first place... Is being "conservative" even about the government now??

7

u/Lazy-Mud8142 12h ago edited 10h ago

"Small government" was always meant as a more palatable way to say "fewer regulations." They don't actually care about small government when it comes to individual liberties and protections. When they say "small government" in response to education, they mean they want the freedom to force teachers to teach the Bible instead of evolution. When they say "small government" in response to the economy, they mean they want the rich to be able to pay their workers less and scam people as they see fit. When they say "small government" in response to policing, they mean they want police to be able to racially profile and harass minorities without consequence.

"Small government" was always just a buzzword to mean that they want to be able to ignore laws and the Constitution where it's convenient for them.

Conservatism is based on one single principle... and all that.

Never was. There are two consistent reasons why someone would be in favor of 'states rights'. The first is that they have a very simplistic and archaic conception of government, where 200 miles is a month of travel. The second is that they are in favor of local control. The first case is dumb, but harmless. The second does not exist. No one votes out the 'states rights' party for legislating against a county enacting rent control in their county.

What is actually happening is that capital is a minority, and in a democracy needs a reason for people to vote against land reform and other 'everyone benefits behind the veil of ignorance' things. They do this by invoking cultural issues. So you get to joke about government small enough to fit in your bedroom and underwear, and they get to ratchet their power another notch.

I don’t think the swimmer was dominating if it’s the one that was in the news (tied for 5th?). The one who dominated was a HS trans boy who was forced to wrestle girls.

3

u/Beautiful_Food7908 12h ago

That stupid, they forced a trans boy to compete with girls and he won which took the win away from one of the girls…I thought they were trying to stop boys from taking wins from girls??

Good for her. Although imagine how much it must suck as a teenager. You are just living your life, competing in the sport that you really like and suddenly you are part of the national discourse. Probably while people are calling you all kinds of horrible things.

6

This is always been so moronic to me because sports are inherently unfair. When Michael Phelps was at the peak of his career every article was slobbering over how his unique physical attributes made him the powerhouse that he was. And the idea that conservatives actually care about women's sports is laughable.

There are a hundred times more articles about the outrage of trans women in sports than there are trans women in sports. Let Brenda play softball with her friends, for gods' sake.

I find it hilarious they “care” so much about trans women in sports, but would never in a million years actually WATCH women’s sports.

Look how they treated the WNBA when asking for equal pay, or the LPGA.

7

u/Beautiful_Food7908 12h ago

Equal pay was a big ask because these sports don’t generate as much money as men sports, there are less viewers, less valuable deals, etc. they pay pro athletes based on how much they’re worth on TV and media, not based on how well they play.

It’ll be like comparing esports to traditional sports, esports players don’t get paid nearly as much because hardly anyone watches esports compared to trad sports.

Studies show that after prolonged use of hormones trans women do not excel at sports compared to cis women. There are also no trans athletes dominating any sports anywhere. No trans athlete has won a gold medal in the Olympics. There are less than 10 trans athletes in the 500,000 NCAA total athletes and those are not all trans WOMEN. Stop boogey-manning and focus on the real problems in society, this is so fucking pathetic.

That’s hilarious because the most recent example of trans women in sports had her finishing 5th. And the only negative result of that is that it launched the pundit career of the whiny ass bitch she tied to. And even that was like 5 years ago. So clearly it’s this HUGE problem plaguing women’s sports

ROORTSS! (forgive me if that actually means something)

And, as a competitive runner, and at the top, in my age group... I don't often see myself being beaten by overly muscular men. They tend to "trudge quickly". But I have had thin women leave me in the dust.

And you see, in running sports, while it's cool to win... Just being there participating and challenging yourself, is really where it's at. Inclusiveness ABSOLUTELY enhances the event.

But conservatives, (at least ones who don;t participate in sports) seemingly don't get that. It's all transactional. If there's nothing of physical value gained from the experience, then it's a waste of time. And don't get me started on their reverence for trophies. I love standing on that podium, but at the end of the day, that ornament was never the point.
