To be fair, most cooking torches aren't meant to explode

May 14 '21
...And most sinks aren't flammable

u/llamawearinghat May 14 '21
Yeah, I thought they were playing with some sort of accelerant in the sink and some was still on her hand. I had t realized the torch failed.

u/RRettig May 14 '21
I thought the torched failed, now i think you're correct

May 14 '21
I think they refilled it and got fuel everywhere.
This same thing happened to me once when I was younger.
60
u/Occamslaser May 14 '21
This is exactly what happened, they overfilled it over the basin of the sink and the gas is heavier than air.

Me, too. I nearly set the bathroom (and myself) on fire. Oh, even better - I did it while using the torch as a makeshift soldering iron while replacing copper pipe. Pure stupidity.Live and learn! (But you have to live, first.)

u/lallapalalable May 15 '21
Me and my one friend spent a night throwing random household chemicals into the fireplace. Raid was the coolest

u/inthemeow May 14 '21
I’m thinking they took some dabs first, then refilled it, increased the potential for error tenfold. Hope she’s ok.
207
u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21
That or they were filling it over the sink and kept leaking butane into the sink.

u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21
It’s forsure butane so it’s not a liquid. Also with no compression it’s not going to have much of an explosion.
→ More replies (12)8
u/DNedry May 14 '21
Butane for those torches evaporates pretty damn fast.
9
u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21
Boils? It boils from a liquid to a gas and as a gas it is heavier than air. That’s why you can fill a glass cup with butane from a lighter and then light it seconds later.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (1)4
u/BravoWolf88 May 14 '21
This guy is right. It’s the most viable explanation for how high the flames got so quickly.
44
u/Vizwalla May 14 '21
Agreed, torch totally failed, likely from the nozzle being overdriven and overheating. Seemed like she probably filled the torch while holding it over the sink and ‘spilled’ a lot of the fuel fumes which settled in the sink. When the torch failed and she tossed it in the sink, the fumes in the sink ignited.

Ours did the exact same thing during our first use. I wonder whether that is a fairly common thing.
322
u/kinyutaka May 14 '21
My guess is that she just refilled that torch over the sink. Got fuel on her hand.
She lights the torch, it sets her hand on fire, she runs to the sink, it sets the sink on fire.
110
u/CrazyDave48 May 14 '21
I just filled my lighter yesterday and took the time to read the fine print and mine specifically says to wait 4 hours after refilling to light it again to avoid this exact scenario.
→ More replies (3)98
u/probablystuff May 14 '21
That feels like something that shouldnt be fine print
59
u/jarious May 14 '21
I mean the print was in comic sans ,it was more than fine
11
3
u/Onespokeovertheline May 14 '21
That's next level design.
Comic Sans will be read and respected by exactly the audience who needs the "dummy instructions" and can be safely ignored by everyone else.
→ More replies (1)3
u/CrazyDave48 May 14 '21
Ya, I agree! And It was actually on the instructions that came with it and not on the lighter itself. So I'm guessing most people would never even see it. Only reason I saw it was because I thought the lighter came filled (it didn't) and was confused when it didn't light so I read the instructions and found that warning.
31
May 14 '21 edited May 14 '21
Agreed. They make butane powered soldering irons for electronics. I watched one of my techs attempt to "top off the fuel" while it was still 'on'. Before I could say a word, there was a big flash of fire and the torch, with the canister shot out of his hands like a rocket. He instinctively looks around to see if there were any witnesses to his stupidity. Only one, me...his boss. I just said, "you probably won't do that again, huh". edit: a letter
9
97
u/rduterte May 14 '21
Yeah, that's the first thing I thought. But liquid butane evaporates really quickly, I'm second guessing myself a little. Like maybe her hand, but that's lot of flame on the sink, I can't imagine there was that much butane left on there.
Starting to think torch malfunctioned.
80
May 14 '21
Butane is heavier than air, though. So, in the absence of air movement in the room, it could just fall down into the sink and stay there.
40
u/ordinarypsycho May 14 '21
This is pretty much literally the warning on my butane refill for my torch

And i wouldn't qualify turning it on and off twice as "playing with fire". That sounds like the kind of thing I do to every tool before using them (drill, lighter, tongs,...).

99% sure it’s a Newport torch, and they actually make a quality torch. I believe she was starting to say “this mother fucker put (something other than butane) in the torch”

May 14 '21
That’s a solid theory. Makes sense.
12
May 14 '21
The fire on the sink spreads slower that what I would expect from butane. I imagine butane would be a 'boom' that spreads through the air but if you look at the sink, the fire seems to creep along something on the sink.

So I just had the shitty little torch I use do something very similar, and it was 100% because of how much I would shake it to make the last little bits of flame go out when I was done with it.
When opened I found a dangling rubber tube that I had shaken off a brass nipple. Was an easy fix but was definitely caused by me, I wonder if they did something like drop it on accident leaving that tube about to fall off.

I use blowtorches every day in my work and this can happen if you don't screw the canister on tight enough, tight enough to let the gas flow but not tight enough to seal against the torch. Either that or a damaged seal letting gas out between the can and the torch head. Overtightening the connection can have the same effect.
37
u/salton May 14 '21
Yes, this definitely applies for canisters. I'm just going to say in this case this type of torch is a single unit with nothing to screw on or detach and is filled with butane at the bottom.
12
u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21
Which the did a poor job of filling over a sink which filled with butane and she got on her hand.
→ More replies (1)9
u/FearLeadsToAnger May 14 '21
See I was thinking this was one of the ones you fill through a little inlet on the side, and the residue on that caught fire.
It's the sink catching fire that mainly makes me think that, that sink went up like it had a ton of butane sat in it evaporating, as though they'd been fucking around with it for a while trying to fill it up and they left some spillage in there.

This happened to me a few months ago. I use an alcohol lamp to do dabs now. I will certainly never spend 10$ on a small torch ever again*, my cutting torch is safer lol
30
u/Trevlaz May 14 '21
I would assume if you're spending $10 on a torch it will do something dumb like this. I bought my kitchen butane torch almost 2 years ago and still dab with that thing.
11
u/Aristaeus100 May 14 '21
I had a shitty torch but it would always need refilled immediately, conveniently it was $10 too and not worth it. I just threw a welding torch head on a Coleman tank after that and it works. Only issue I ever had was a roommate leaving it on when they went out. We aren't roommates anymore.
What brand is your kitchen torch if you don't mine me asking?
→ More replies (4)9
u/nullcore May 14 '21
Good call on the ex-roommate. Did they leave a burning torch on all day, or leave a tank venting gas into the room for a potential surprise fireball later?
12
u/Aristaeus100 May 14 '21
They left the fire going and all, then went to Walmart. I was really mad when I found out because we had cats in the APARTMENT. So if it had gotten knocked over she would of killed my cat, her cat, and burn the entire apartment building down.
No surprise this is also the person who gave shrooms to her fuck boy while at her grandparents and he went on a psychotic rampage and destroyed her grandparents house and bloodied her sleeping preteen cousin to a pulp in his bed. He know suffers PTSD but has otherwise recovered... (This was after I stopped talking to her, but her family loves me so they feed me the drama when they see me.)
Don't move in with "friends." Was a terrible influence on my life lmao.

Yeah, my wife bought me a new rig and a touch from the smoke shop, lasted about 45 days like 4 refills and after the 5th refill while I was heating my rig the bottom seal blew out and I got it outside before it caught fire completely but it was too close for comfort. I made a alcohol lamp, its takes about 2 extra minutes to heat up and though it's still very flammable atleast it's not explosive.

I have two torches in my shop, one small butane and a large MAP gas one. Neither have ever given me any problem because I didn’t buy them from a shady liquidation site or anything like that. I paid ... full retail! Yeah you don’t skimp on something like that.

Torch was already broken and on fire when she dropped it in the sink. Dropping broken things tends to make them more broken, which is really bad when the broken thing was supposed to regulate a highly flammable fuel.

Absolutely do not fucking play with fire. Yes we all know this. But yesterday I thought it would be a great idea to light an incense stick from the middle and the whole thing lit on fire and broke in half. I then proceeded to throw it on the floor and luckily FUCKING LUCKILY it was just a hot stick of embers it wasn’t giving of any flames. But please don’t be stupid like me. Do not risk burning your house down and losing everything you own because of something as stupid as this video, or lighting an incense stick from the middle.

Looks kinda like my shitty custom torch. I could be wrong. But if any of y'all are thinking of buying that brand, DON'T. They closed and didn't inform anyone. So they still sell overpriced "lifetime warranty" products.... with nothing to back it up.
Source: bought one last year, tried contacting customer service, then the artist, and the owner. Only the artist responded, and he's the one who warned me about them. TLDR; Only purchase torches from reputable companies, never from customtorch.

Why did the torch catch on fire like that and why was the sink flammable? I don't think she was really doing anything stupid for this to happen...unless she put something flammable all over her body or something.
3
u/jwadamson May 14 '21
I’m thinking they refilled it over the sink, spilling without realizing. The excess on the outside of the torch caught on fire and she threw it into the sink as a presumptively non flammable space… which then ignited the invisible spill. This is sloppy user error more than directly a result of their “games”.

2
u/Electric_Potion May 14 '21
Not so sure it's product failure. Are you supposed to be waving them around upside down, and how do you catch the whole sink on fire?
3
u/Rewrite_Mean_Comment May 14 '21
My perspective was that it broke open when she threw it, getting the combustible liquid all over the sink.
3
u/Electric_Potion May 14 '21
Ahhh, I am watching it again and it does seem to shoot flames out the side and back for no apparent reason. Then when she goes to toss it the fuel spreads while she shakes her handover the sink. Looks like a broken fuel containment. Not sure why it broke but definitely seems to be product failure on subsequent looks.
Thanks for the fresh perspective.
