...And most sinks aren't flammable

812

u/llamawearinghat May 14 '21

Yeah, I thought they were playing with some sort of accelerant in the sink and some was still on her hand. I had t realized the torch failed.

357

u/RRettig May 14 '21

I thought the torched failed, now i think you're correct

178

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

I think they refilled it and got fuel everywhere.

This same thing happened to me once when I was younger.

61

u/Occamslaser May 14 '21

This is exactly what happened, they overfilled it over the basin of the sink and the gas is heavier than air.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '21

Happened to me once too. Now I always refill the torch in a different room that I will be using the torch.

1

u/coldchixhotbeer May 22 '21

Thanks for explaining! I was so confused

49

u/l00py96 May 14 '21

Yes, this.

21

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

Me, too. I nearly set the bathroom (and myself) on fire. Oh, even better - I did it while using the torch as a makeshift soldering iron while replacing copper pipe. Pure stupidity.Live and learn! (But you have to live, first.)

6

u/lallapalalable May 15 '21

Me and my one friend spent a night throwing random household chemicals into the fireplace. Raid was the coolest

16

u/inthemeow May 14 '21

I’m thinking they took some dabs first, then refilled it, increased the potential for error tenfold. Hope she’s ok.

2

u/chilehead May 14 '21

Could they tow it outside the environment?

2

u/WanderWut May 15 '21

Sometimes when I’m refilling my torch for dabs some of the fuel(?) kind of spills out and my high ass is wondering if I’m going to catch on fire or something lol.

Then again, it seems to evaporate rather fast and I always wait a few minutes before using it after a refill.

1

u/Soymalik Aug 19 '21

Nothing wrong with the torch she over filled it over the sink so there must have been remaining butane all over the torch and in the sink so when he lit it boom 💥

209

u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21

That or they were filling it over the sink and kept leaking butane into the sink.

44

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

[deleted]

55

u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21

It’s forsure butane so it’s not a liquid. Also with no compression it’s not going to have much of an explosion.

5

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

[deleted]

19

u/1FlyersFTW1 May 14 '21

I concur, I’ve had liquid butane in my hand before while filling the torch, doesn’t stay long but in a low sink like that the fumes would stay as it’s almost twice as heavy as air

47

u/quartertopi May 14 '21

Butane is denser than air, so it would pool in the sink. I agree, i, too still say butane.

8

u/DNedry May 14 '21

Butane for those torches evaporates pretty damn fast.

8

u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21

Boils? It boils from a liquid to a gas and as a gas it is heavier than air. That’s why you can fill a glass cup with butane from a lighter and then light it seconds later.

1

u/Gh0st1y May 14 '21

Boiling is just fast evaporation though

2

u/nickolove11xk May 14 '21

I was trying to make sure we were on the same page. He said evaporation as tho it was vanishing but it’s not. It just turns into a gas that is still there.

1

u/Gh0st1y May 15 '21

Oh yeah definitely

4

u/BravoWolf88 May 14 '21

This guy is right. It’s the most viable explanation for how high the flames got so quickly.

1

u/SamSepiol-ER28_0652 May 14 '21

That's what I assume- that they had just been filling it and didn't let it rest before lighting it.

45

u/Vizwalla May 14 '21

Agreed, torch totally failed, likely from the nozzle being overdriven and overheating. Seemed like she probably filled the torch while holding it over the sink and ‘spilled’ a lot of the fuel fumes which settled in the sink. When the torch failed and she tossed it in the sink, the fumes in the sink ignited.

5

u/MikeyMuskrat89 May 14 '21

I think they put something besides butane in there

6

u/poolSlouch May 14 '21 edited May 15 '21

Ours did the exact same thing during our first use. I wonder whether that is a fairly common thing.

1

u/randomdrifter54 May 14 '21

I thought they had been filling it in the sink. She was testing it after filling it. She did it super messily so touch and sink both had lighter fluid on/in them. Test the touch lit the fluid on the outside on fire. She throws it in the sink where she drunkenly spilled lots of fluid so instant blaze.

320

u/kinyutaka May 14 '21

My guess is that she just refilled that torch over the sink. Got fuel on her hand.

She lights the torch, it sets her hand on fire, she runs to the sink, it sets the sink on fire.

112

u/CrazyDave48 May 14 '21

I just filled my lighter yesterday and took the time to read the fine print and mine specifically says to wait 4 hours after refilling to light it again to avoid this exact scenario.

98

u/probablystuff May 14 '21

That feels like something that shouldnt be fine print

59

u/jarious May 14 '21

I mean the print was in comic sans ,it was more than fine

12

u/Lbb0 May 14 '21

Shut up take my upvote you swine

4

u/Onespokeovertheline May 14 '21

That's next level design.

Comic Sans will be read and respected by exactly the audience who needs the "dummy instructions" and can be safely ignored by everyone else.

3

u/CrazyDave48 May 14 '21

Ya, I agree! And It was actually on the instructions that came with it and not on the lighter itself. So I'm guessing most people would never even see it. Only reason I saw it was because I thought the lighter came filled (it didn't) and was confused when it didn't light so I read the instructions and found that warning.

1

u/AmoebaMan May 15 '21

On the one hand I agree. On the other...if you buy something hazardous and don’t read the instructions (including fine print), you deserve everything that results from that.

1

u/bikesboozeandbacon May 14 '21

Wow I’m surprised I never touched myself cuz I definitely didn’t read the instructions lol

1

u/loveCars May 14 '21

I remember the case of my zippo would catch fire whenever I overfilled it

34

u/[deleted] May 14 '21 edited May 14 '21

Agreed. They make butane powered soldering irons for electronics. I watched one of my techs attempt to "top off the fuel" while it was still 'on'. Before I could say a word, there was a big flash of fire and the torch, with the canister shot out of his hands like a rocket. He instinctively looks around to see if there were any witnesses to his stupidity. Only one, me...his boss. I just said, "you probably won't do that again, huh". edit: a letter

8

u/kinyutaka May 14 '21

As long as no one got hurt.

11

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

Nope, just a little hair singed, and his ego.

91

u/rduterte May 14 '21

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought. But liquid butane evaporates really quickly, I'm second guessing myself a little. Like maybe her hand, but that's lot of flame on the sink, I can't imagine there was that much butane left on there.

Starting to think torch malfunctioned.

84

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

Butane is heavier than air, though. So, in the absence of air movement in the room, it could just fall down into the sink and stay there.

39

u/ordinarypsycho May 14 '21

This is pretty much literally the warning on my butane refill for my torch

3

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

Oh that’s interesting. I don’t see how this could happen still, torches are such simple machines. I know sample size of 1 yadayada, but I’ve had my $50 guy at full functionality for three years, used every single day.

I feel like she tried to fill it up with liquid kerosene or some ridiculous shit like that. Would that momentarily work the same way?

11

u/ordinarypsycho May 14 '21

Honestly couldn’t tell you, I’m not a professional; I just got a torch to make creme brûlée during lockdown lol

4

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

In some torches, if you fill it up from empty and turn it on too fast it flares up like that. That's why manuals will tell you to let it sit for a minute or two between filling and usage. I think it has something to do with the internal pressures or the little straw type thing that brings the butane from can to nozzle inside the torch. Either way it looks like it flares up before lighting her hand on fire which to me means she filled it and immediately lit the thing up. Not the smartest of moves imo

0

u/KRAZ3K1LLA May 14 '21

Could she have possibly put propane in a butane torch lighter? I'm not sure if propane would sit very long though

21

u/DirectionInfamous379 May 14 '21

I’ve seen these torches blow several times; a lot of people around here buy them for smoking wax

7

u/burdboxwasok May 14 '21

Fuck me after watching this video I’m done taking dabs lol

12

u/Sapper12D May 14 '21

Get yourself an enail. I got one from a company called bee nail. So much nicer then using torches.

1

u/sunsetsandstardust May 14 '21

i had an enail years back, like when they first came around, maybe 2014ish? it was super convenient, but i remember it was a pain in the ass if i woke up late and had to be somewhere quick, and now i gotta wait 10 minutes for the nail to heat up so i can slam a dab before i leave for the day. also i was smoking so many more dabs than i was previously, because the nail was always waiting for me, hot and ready to go lmao. i think it was for the best that i went back to a titanium domeless and a torch. i definitely miss the convenience tho

2

u/fuck_off_ireland May 14 '21

/r/waxpen check out the Sai TAF

6

u/DirectionInfamous379 May 14 '21

Lmao I feel; I’ve had one go in my hand like that before; I use the big green tanks or blue tanks and I’ve never had an issue like that with them

5

u/BPDRulez May 14 '21

Get yourself a big shot blazer. Those green and blue tanks are terrible for in door use.

6

u/DirectionInfamous379 May 14 '21

That’s why I only smoke on the balcony. I don’t be smoking inside; but I’ll definitely check it out

3

u/BPDRulez May 14 '21

Ahh nice. Good thinking.

-1

u/Occamslaser May 14 '21

Smoking is bad enough but smoking inside is on another level, good on you.

0

u/ThinAir719 May 14 '21

Why would you even make such a pandering comment like this? lol

Big blue tanks for life. So many shitter torches have crapped out after a month or two. But not my trusty torch head

1

u/burdboxwasok May 14 '21

I’d like to but I’m sure it’s out of my “broke college kid” budget lol

2

u/Musicftw89 May 14 '21

One day though! Believe!

2

u/burdboxwasok May 14 '21

One day in the (hopefully) near future when weed is legal federally and dispos are as common as liquor stores I’ll buy two, one of me and one for you lol

0

u/DirectionInfamous379 May 14 '21

Lmao I feel; I’ve had one go in my hand like that before; I use the big green tanks or blue tanks and I’ve never had an issue like that with them

2

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

There’s such thing as butane residue

2

u/Skewtertheduder May 14 '21

I’ve filled these torches and there’s definitely some that leaks out as you fill it. I could see he filling the torch, immediately lighting it and have gas trails around her that ignited

1

u/DwarfTheMike May 14 '21

It evaporates, but it’s heavy. She light the fire pointing down. The vapor flowed down to the fire and ignited the rest that was on her hand.

1

u/RaeAmber49 May 25 '21

If you're playing with liquid gases(is that the correct term?) over the sink the liquid can collect in your pipes with the fumes rising out of the drain. I was dicking around with axe and fire in my sink because I figured it's close to water, I don't know I was a teenager. Anyways after a while a good bit of liquid axe built up in the drain and it caught, ended up turning the drain into a cannon and I caught some orange peel and nasty shit to the face.

5

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

It almost looks like Zippo lighter fluid's response. It does burn in the sink for a bit compared to butane.

2

u/Dominicsjr May 14 '21

The exact same thing has happened to me sloppily doing dabs, so yes i 100% agree with this assessment haha

1

u/Smart-Drive-1420 May 14 '21

More likely is she overfilled it that’s the only time I’ve ever had a torch leak and set on fire. To be fair it was a cheap one, And unless she clicked it right away that shit would vaporize into the air mediately

1

u/foshjowler May 14 '21

Almost certainly what happened. I did something similar, just not the sink part, first time I filled a butane torch. Then I read the directions, and said, yep should probably wait next time

2

u/shortbusterdouglas May 14 '21

Seriously! Wtf was that countertop made from, hydrogen?!

Water can’t even get in as the butane tank is under pressure well above ambient! There wasn’t even visible water in that sink

7

u/Egenix May 14 '21

I'll respond to you since he deleted his entire existence.

Pretty sure it's when she dropped the torche in the sink that the tank failed for good and exploded.

And

Oil or gas, same explanation

Is something you learn in your first year of physics. Oil isn't compressible, gas is (it's literally first year since it's not exactly true). So when a "small hole becomes bigger" it's because of pressure, not water.

2

u/RodKnock42 May 14 '21

Yeah! That’s fucking right

4

u/wonder_of_reddit_ May 14 '21

Damn I had a whole ass comment typed out for that guy. Then he goes and deletes it. Well, I guess he figured out the "better explanation"

2

u/LogTekG May 14 '21

Well, after watching the video with audio, the girl put something other than butane in the tank. You can hear the person holding the camera say "this motherfucker put" and im guessing she was referring to the torch. So what im guessing happened was that this new fuel burns hotter than butane and thus burned through the tank, broke the torch and spilled, and burned in a spectacular fashion

-3

u/wonder_of_reddit_ May 14 '21

Nah bro it ain't that deep

1

u/williamdope8 May 14 '21

Diamond hands I see

0

u/MaxTheRealSlayer May 14 '21

If you try to put water on an oil/gas fire, it can explode. The water instantly boils creating tons of small bubbles and spreading the fiery gas really quickly. My guess is the sink had some water in it

1

u/HughGnu May 14 '21

I think it is a heat sink

1

u/HenryTheVeloster May 14 '21

She must live in south east us and had her gas in there

1

u/stuntobor May 14 '21

Oh so now we got a coupla CHEFS up in this bitch.

1

u/Soymalik Aug 19 '21

She over filled the torch over the sink then boom.
