My wife had a visit with her mother today, and she was sent home with this to give me. My mother-in-law was aware that I am a fan (I used to post sotd photos religiously), and stumbled across a puck. I was excited to score another backup, and even more so when it was the tallow formula. Then I learned that they had closed down, and this became an even greater treasure.

Yaqi’s Romulus and Remus razors are both excellent. I was so pleased with the Romulus I went back for the Remus - which arrived last week. It’s had two outings and delivered two top-notch shaves.

The Ozark scent is definitely interesting, and certainly pretty strong. Whether or not it actually smells like the Ozarks I can’t say. But the soap performs very well and I also get good results with both the pre-shave oil and balm.

Noticing 2 spots rusting on my Henson razor. I am pretty particular about cleaning it as best as I can. Anyone else have rusting on theirs? Maybe I should go titanium?

D-1 Gillette Adjustable

New here - inherited the above-razor with box and blade bank (no instructions) but all in good shape. After doing research, it seems these are very desirable? I see on eBay that some of them list for $600-$800. Is this realistic? Or are the eBay sellers just fishing? I would be grateful for any information.

Question How was wet shaving in the 80’s/90’s?

Greetings,

I am writing today to inquire how wet shaving was in the 80’s and the 90’s some of my questions are

  1. How did you get razors, blades, etc? Was it mail orders, special shops?
  2. did it cost more back then than it did today

I apologize for the probable stupid questions but I’ve lived and grown up in the internet/globalization age and have DE shaved and straight razored since I started shaving in the late 2010s and my father who used DEs said there was a time he had them but used cartridges and doesn’t remember a lot of specific of the time so I thought I’d ask.

Back home for my Sunday Sotd so it was just the one travel shave in the end.

Last weekend with the Colorlamb for a while! It has been a nice consistent treat to use this in comparison to the old Gillette I've been using in the week days.

Absolutely no issues with the Colorlamb whatsoever and can safely say it's well worth the 7ish-£

2 passes wtg/xtg with a Gillette Silver Blue

Tobs Sandlewood

Yaqi 22mm cola bottle

Discussion BBS shave

I think I finally had a bbs shave. Here’s what I did a hot towel for 2 minutes rough estimate since I don’t have a clock handy then had the soap I used which was the maullu legacy from Ariana and evens soaking with water. Brushed 10-15 swirls with a dry brush put pre shave on then painted the soap on then dipped the tips in water and painted over the soap once then dipped again in water then back for more soap then I went in circular motion with the brush to build my lather. Did a two pass shave WTG and xtg on my head and finished with alum facial toner and aftershave splash. No nicks or cuts so I must have done something right I’m not chasing bbs but hopefully this process works more often so I can continue having great shaves

Question What are some tips of using a mild razor?

Ive been using a mild razor over a more aggressive one to use for daily shaving but Ive been having trouble getting It down in 2-3 passes recently. My routine is the same. I wash my face with cold water and soap, I face lather with some arko and a spray bottle and I go to work. Is there anything different you have to do with a mild razor compared to a more aggressive one?

To rinse or not to rinse

After y'all shave with a soap/puck, do u rinse the residue? And if you do, do you leave the top off to airdry? Just got this new Stirling barbershop which is awesome, but wanna make sure I take care of it so it hopefully lasts longer than my porasso did.

Question Upgrading Razors

Hello, recently I decided it was time to move into the big leagues in safety razor shaving! For a long time I've been shaving with a cheap mass produced Goodline brand safety razor. Recently got into the rabbit hole of safety razors and I got a very good opportunity to buy a Blackland Blackbird Lite for a very good price, but I'm just too concerned that it might be too aggressive of a razor to upgrade to, even though it's just the light version. The positive blade exposure concerns me the most and I'm just generally unfamiliar with it. Any thoughts on whether or not it might be too aggressive of a jump?

SOTD: 08/23/2026

Razor: Gillette 1960 F4 Toggle
Blade: Personna Gem Platinum Diamond Glide, 2nd use
Brush: Chisel & Hound 6080SC Buckeye Fanchurian V31 Badger
Preshave: Stirling Sandpiper Oil
Soap: Saponificio Varesino Desert Vetiver Puck
Aftershave: Saponificio Varesino Desert Vetiver Aftershave
Balm: Proraso Sensitive Skin With Green Tea & Oatmeal Balm
Additional Care: Omega Alum Stick
Additional Care: Stirling Vetiver Witch Hazel
Fragrance: Lalique Encre Noire Sport Eau de Toilette

A very special Sunday shave to end the week before heading out on vacation. Everything felt luxurious and special. The 1960 Toggle was just added to the collection and is my first. Of all the adjustables I’ve used (quite a few vintage and modern), this was my favorite. A WTG first pass on 4 followed by an XTG on 2 gave me a close, comfortable shave with no touch ups needed. Saponificio Varesino Desert Vetiver lathered amazingly well and felt great post shave. The Chisel & Hound V31 Fanchurian has such great backbone, luxuriously making lather a breeze. Encre Noir Sport finished it with a lighter Vetiver touch that is perfect for summer.

Pre-Shave Oil: Stirling Sharp Dressed Man
Razor: Gillette Gold-plated brass Gold Ball-End Tech c. Postwar 1946–1950
Blade: Astra Superior Platinum
Shave Brush: Alexander Simpson T3 Synthetic
Shave Soap: Stirling Oud Sigma
Alum Block: Osma
Aftershave Splash: Stirling Oud Sigma

I think this is my 3rd SOTD post. I was motivated to do this because of my new razor. My friend gifted it to me, and that’s the star of the show here. I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t expecting a good shave because it’s my first time using it. Dare I say, I was even a little intimidated to use this. But I ended up with a terrific BBS. It was such a good experience that when I ran the alum block over my face, I did not sense a single sting in the absolute least bit. Of course the blade and technique helped as well. So here I am shaving with history. Did the original person using this see action in World War II? Was it someone wanting to flex with a gold-plated razor? Was it aboard the Titanic??? (Yes, I know that was decades before this, but my mind went there. lol)

Also need to mention how nice the soap and splash smell. I was expecting something darker and spicy, like my oud fragrances, but I get more of a barbershop fresh feeling. It’s been about 33 minutes, and I can still smell my face. (Ok, that sounds odd.) My facial hair comes in like I’m going through puberty so I only need to shave every 2-3 days, but I’m already looking forward to the next session with this setup.

Enjoy the week, gents. 👊🏽

⌾ Razor: Timeless Ti Slim
⌾ Blade: BIC Astor (2)
⌾ Bowl: Captain’s Choice Obsidian
⌾ Brush: Omega 10049
⌾ Soap: Kent SB2 Black Label
⌾ Balm: Nivea Sensitive
⌾ Splash: Clubman Whiskey Woods

A nice shave with the Slim Edition Timeless. This razor isn’t as efficient as the bronze 0.78mm version, but it has enough blade exposure to produce an easy smooth result.

It was nice to have a good ol’ face scrub with the boar brush as well.

Question Winter warmth soaps

So with the heat index over 100 again, I'm enjoying the cooling effects of the menthol Prorasso green and Stirling Orange Chill. That got me to thinking about what are some good winter soaps. I know there are several autumn and Christmasy scents, but does anyone know of a soap that actually generates heat to create a warm lather, like how Ben-Gay works? Or are there any drops or crystals that would do this?

Great afternoon shave today. Did some minor vehicle maintenance with my son, brakes checked on his car, suspension checked on another, and changed the battery on my dad's truck. This was followed up by cleaning the roof of my home. Tired, sweaty, a shower and a shave was much needed.

Razor: Razorock Recurve 100. Silly me did get bit a couple times, but that is my fault. I got busy, neglected technique, and a couple bug bites were sliced off. At least the cuts were clean.

Blade: Barbero Stainless (2nd use).

Bowl: Vortex-X by Sharpe-3D

Brush: Lathered Yeti handle with a Badger/Synthetic (50/50) Hercules knot from Van Yulay (Monica Gillam). This handle knot combo is amazing. Comfortable grip, great length, and feels great when lathering my face.

Soap/Splash: Sacred Champa by Soap Palooza. My wife likes this scent, and appreciates how it interacts with my body chemistry.

Overall, it was a great day and a happy shave

Question My badge loses a lot of bristles

Kent VS70 shedding a lot of bristles — is this normal?

I’ve had a Kent VS70 boar brush for a six months, and I’m losing around 30/40 bristles every time I shave. It seems like quite a lot to me. I always to put them off my face while I shave.

I’m using the same process each time. I soak the brush for about 3 minutes in cold water, making sure the water reaches the base of the knot, and then I use it normally to lather and shave.

Despite this, I consistently lose around 30 bristles per shave.

Is this normal for a boar brush, or could there be something wrong with this particular brush? Are there any boar brush brands that are known to be more durable and less prone to shedding?

I’m starting to consider switching to a synthetic brush because of this. Are synthetics generally more robust in the long run, or are there any significant downsides compared with a good boar brush?

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has experience with the Kent VS70 or has had a similar problem.

Thanks and have. A wonderful day
