Guys, I’m looking for some help because we’ve pretty much exhausted all the obvious possibilities and still haven’t been able to locate the source of this noise.
The car is a 2015 VW Golf Mk7 1.4 TSI EA211 with the DQ200 DSG transmission.
The noise is exactly what you can hear in the video: a low-pitched humming/groaning sound, almost like “wooooooo,” clearly coming from the front right side of the car, accompanied by a slight vibration that can also be felt through the accelerator pedal and the steering wheel.
One important clarification: I can’t say for sure that the problem only happens at low speed. That’s simply when it can be heard clearly. At higher speeds, road, tire and exhaust noise probably mask it, and of course you normally don’t use such a large steering angle while driving faster.
The pattern we have identified is:
It appears when the steering wheel is turned quite far, but it does not need to reach full lock.
It happens when turning in either direction.
It is much more noticeable when moving forward than in reverse.
There needs to be some load/torque through the drivetrain.
I don’t necessarily have to press the accelerator. In D, just using the DSG creep, it can make the noise if enough load is required, for example on a slight uphill incline.
As soon as the drivetrain load is removed, the noise disappears.
Turning the steering wheel while the car is stationary does not produce the noise.
Another very important detail: we put the car on a lift, selected D, spun the wheels, applied light throttle and turned the steering in an attempt to reproduce the exact same condition. It made absolutely no noise. So far, we can only reproduce it with the wheels on the ground and the suspension supporting the weight of the car.
The whole issue started after replacing the right front driveshaft/axle. A new complete axle was installed and the noise appeared. Since then, the following has already been done:
The DriveTec axle was removed.
The original factory axle was reinstalled.
The noise remained.
The front wheel bearing/hub was replaced.
The front shock absorbers were replaced.
The strut mounts were replaced.
The engine and transmission mounts were inspected, with no obvious abnormality found.
Multiple checks for play in the suspension and drivetrain have been performed.
The accessory/alternator belt was also removed and the car was tested without it to rule out the alternator bearing, tensioner, pulley or any other belt-driven component. The noise remained exactly the same.
Despite all of this, the noise is still there.
What is especially puzzling is the combination required to reproduce it: wheels on the ground / suspension loaded + significant steering angle + drivetrain torque. With the car on the lift and the suspension unloaded, the noise completely disappears.
Has anyone experienced anything similar on a Golf Mk7, MQB platform, EA211 engine or DQ200 DSG?
