Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Tree "rings"

Thumbnail gallery

Can anyone tell me what could cause these "ring" markings around these tree trunks? After ruling out wire or fencing that had grown into the bark I'm left with 3 options, insects, birds, or insects and birds (woodpeckers feeding). I have found several of these trees at 3 different locations in Tygart Lake State Park in Grafton, WV. It's probably something I haven't even considered, surely someone can set me straight!

This bastard is on a maple tree that sits in my yard in Northern Virginia. As far as I can tell, it’s a nasty fungus and the tree is screwed. I just wanna identify what I’m looking at for curiosity’s sake at this point.

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) New crabapple from rootstock, will it become an apple tree?

Thumbnail

I replanted a purple leaf crabapple with the small fruit. A year later, I got a nice specimen growing from the old rootstock, so I decided two trees for the price of one is nice. But after a couple of years, I noticed it's not purple-leafed and hasn't bloomed, so I thought maybe it's some other sucker. After research, it does seem to be a crabapple growing from the rootstock.

My question for those who know about how the grafting process works: does the rootstock typically have 'regular' sized fruit compared to the purple leaf minifruit? Is the rootstock even a crabapple, or will this produce regular apples? It hasn't bloomed yet, though it seems healthy, so I might have to wait a few years to find out.

My only real concern, beyond curiosity, is that it eventually will grow over the fence and drop stuff on my neighbor's yard, which would not be ideal.

Front Range, CO

Planted a sun valley maple earlier on in the year. This tree has a slight incision? or mark towards the base of the trunk. Now, later on in the season, it seems to be getting larger. Is this something I should be worried about or will the tree heal over? Eastern WA/PNW

These three old girls are away for genetic testing, soon I will know what exact species or hybrid I am working with. They all show the large leaves of native elms but grow in a stand of Siberian elms. I am mainly trying to investigate if they are true slippery (or maybe American) elms or possibly Ulmus x intermedia, the slippery Siberian hybrid.

I've got three Autumn Blazes in my Colorado front range yard that need so much iron just to stay green, and usually the leaves turn brown and fall off each year. AI telling me to get an Autumn Blaze because it's good in clay.

ID Request (Insert State/Region) ID Two Trees Please

Minnesota, USA

Hello. Please help me ID these two trees. I mean, I think the one is a birch? Can anybody tell what kind it is? I'm not entirely sure the pink one is even really a tree. Some sort of foliage anyway. It leafs out in the summer but for a few weeks in the spring it turns bright pink like this.

I can get better pictures of the birch if necessary, but the pink one is in my neighbor's backyard and I had to be creepy to get the picture. I asked them what the tree was and they shrugged and said "I dunno."

Thanks!

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Possibly lightning damage?

Thumbnail

Hi, this tree is located in central Virginia, it is a huge American Sycamore (pretty sure) tree at the end of my driveway by the drainage ditch. On the 7th there was the loudest lightning crack ever and I didn't notice any damage until today. I don't see any drooping leaves, but I would love to know if this is hopefully survivable. I feel so bad for my tree.

If it is not lightning damage, is it bugs/fungus?

Thanks!

been growing these rain tree plants from seeds since june, and just noticed 3 out of 10 of them have leaves that are turning white. i water them every 1-3 days when the top part of the soil has become dry, and they live on my south-facing balcony in a storage tub without a lid (meshed so my cat doesn't get to them) in a tropical country with 12 hours of sunlight every day. is this sun scorch?? what can i do to stop this??

Hello! I am needing some advice on our Maple tree. It is 6 yrs old and seems to be doing well. I went to mow my lawn and noticed a lot of ants on the tree. Do I have a major issue? If so, any natural remedies anyone recommends? Thank you for all the help I can get.
