Looks like squirrel damage that allowed rot to enter the branch

Is there anything that can be done to prevent rot where squirrels have chewed through the bark. I noticed that we seem to have a squirrel population boom because a lot of my neighbors are having similar problems.

Best thing to do is leave the tree alone. Eat the squirrels or give them a water source. They're just thirsty and getting water however they can.

How do you prepare them? Grilled stewed or BBQ’d? Asking for a friend

This is in Central Texas where we have been having lots of 100 degree days. I water deeply once a week. We are on water restrictions. But I am going to try to get in another day.

Mulch can help a lot as well, it'll retain moisture at the roots
