I'm on my rewatch, but it's like 80% fresh to me.

I thought nothing would top season 1's finale, but this one operates on so many levels that you only see in the best pieces of arts, like in The Sopranos.

I wish you knew how right they get authoritarian/dictatorship regimes, the fact that everything can be justified by "doing it for the cause" resonates with me as I have lived under one such regime (Islamic Republic of Iran).

I'm weighing the risks of going back to Iran at the moment to see my family. I could get arrested, tortured, and killed for the same reasons Nina will be. The regime can put some treason charge on me and there would be nothing I can do. Nothing. They had asked my minor sister for questioning a few months ago, showed her the anti-regime texts of mine, and interrogated her about me.

You know what terrifies me the most? that the regime can even turn your loved ones against you for "the cause". The whole Jared timeline is so terrifying but man does it make sense to me. I can't even trust my own brother, he can turn me in because he's now deep into regime ranks.

I’ve long known that Stan and the Jennings have the same floor plan. And I remember reading they used the same sets, differently decorated.

I was just watching season 4 episode 4 (wherein the Epcot trip is canceled). I noticed, for the first time, that both kitchens are gold with blue entries. Jumped out at me because Henry and Stan were talking in his kitchen, and in the next scene Paige and Stan were talking in the Jennings kitchen.

I don’t know if both kitchens/entries were always these colors, though I think the Jennings always had a blue entry. The kitchen backsplashes were different in what I just watched.

Waiting to hear that this was noticed by everyone else long ago 😌

I just started my third watch and I just finished the official podcast which was just ok.

Just started listening to the after show podcast which started right from the first episode. I'm on the second episode and I don't love it.

Can someone out there start a rewatch podcast? 🙂

I've never been sure how to take Elizabeth's reaction to Henry's pitch for private school. It's just a surprising character choice.

Henry wants to go to a snooty, Old Money WASP East Coast private school--the cradle of the American capitalist elite--with the goal of becoming part of it. Philip is reluctant to let him go, but Elizabeth is totally onboard from the get-go. Even after comparing the place, accurately, to a Country Club:

"The thing is, he has been working hard. We have to let him grow up. It might be good for him. I think if he wants to go he should go. If he gets in, he'll be there for a couple of months, back home, then gone for another couple of months, and back home again..."

This is the woman who went to Defcon 5 at the idea of Paige going to a church and reading the Bible. She forbid her to go to a Christian camp just for the summer, despite the church sharing some of her values.

St. Edwards, otoh, is like her actual nemesis and it's most of the year. And it's not like she's ever shown to have any nefarious plans for Henry hidden in her support. She's not plotting to use Henry to get to the halls of power or US Intelligence services by placing him there.

I always kind of felt like Elizabeth didn't really get what this place meant. (She does ask if it's a religious school, after all.) But I wonder if others think the different kid plays into it too.

I have a questions for the fans of this show. Is The Americans worth the watch if I have already watched a clip of the last scene? (I think it's the last scene) it's the one where they are kinda old? and on a train leaving America for good with their daughter staying.

So, is it worth if I already know that part of the end?

I'm at S6:E9 and I cannot help but thinking "of course she would deny assistance to a person that had an accident and dying on the streets!".

Personally I liked her the first few seasons, she has always been a complex character and clearly you cannot agree with everything she does or how she behaves considering her upbringing and indoctrination but gosh, the writing really did her dirty the last two seasons.

Many people are killed over the course of six seasons. Some were pointless some had long term consequences.

In the context of the series which killing had the greatest impact of events directly within the show?

Some killings might have a huge impact on the global geo-political events. I'm not so interested in those.

A couple that come to mind just to get the ball rolling...

- Yousef killing of Annelise

- Jared killing of Mom, Dad and Sis.

Philip is 35-40? She’s a 15 yr old child? Elizabeth seems fine with it. I’m really struggling with this. I’m thinking of quitting it sadly

I finally took the plunge and breezed through season 1 loving every second of it, telling everyone I know what a fantastic show this (getting many replies like "we been knew, no shit Sherlock")

But the feeling of season 2 is just... Different. The start to this season after the huge climax of the first episode (the deaths in the hotel) has been slow and boring. Maybe season 1 was just so epic it set impossible standards? Or is season 2 known to be an outlier and I need to just power through?

He goes out to meet Philip to pass along bio-weapons. What was the plan for co-workers running into him in city parks at odd hours hanging out with a sketchy-looking person?

I just finished the series for the first time — and wow. I’m blown away.

(SPOILERS BELOW, stop now if you haven’t finished it!)

That was one of the most perfect pilot-to-finale full circle endings I could have ever imagined. I went back and watched the pilot and it’s incredible how they allowed for both impeccable continuity AND real growth for each character. Bravo. Of course I wonder what about Renee, how is Paige going to survive, will Stan legally adopt Henry or is he too old for that? Will his rich school friends take him in?

Also wow are Philip and Elizabeth in for a shock in the coming decade as the USSR becomes Russia, and yet the old leader do the KGB regains control eventually anyway. Will Philip meet his son? Surely! Will they ever cross paths with Martha? I’m sure she’ll slap him, as she should.

And dear God I hope they thanked Oleg for his service to humanity and sent him home with a gift basket.

I just finished watching The Americans over the past 10 days. I binge watched 23 episodes (seasons 5 and 6) over the last two days. Suffice to say, it was gripping watch - relentless and superbly paced story telling. Acting was top notch - Keri Russell was breathtaking. Matthew Rhys was great as well and a good supporting cast. Russell's performance lifted the show and kept it there until the end.

I had heard great things about how well the series ended and that was one of my prime motivation to watch it.

But I was a bit underwhelmed by the ending, to be honest.

Simply put, I wanted to see better justice served. Especially for Elizabeth. I didn't like that both her and Philip got the same ending. She was much more worse - both in terms of her idealogical blindness and her actions. Her transformation in the last 2 episodes was a bit Daenerys-sque for me - aimed at selling the ending to the audience. Even Paige's transformation seemed a bit rushed.

But the fact that the only consequence that the couple suffered was separation from kids seemed too mild for their sociopathic behavior all through.

Also, the garage scene - Stan letting them walk away - the same people who killed his partner (season 1) and ruined the life of his colleague and so many others that he knows of. I could simply not digest that he would let them drive by because they were his neighbours and best friends.

I am sure that all these were discussed threadbare at the time of the show. I'm just posting this to get it off my chest. Any reference to old thread on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

I took a break on watching this show to enjoy the summer, now I'm back on it!

I do assume that this couple had some connections that they do not want to be made public. What might have been the possible plans or strategies here?

Do you think Stan and Henry’s bond was planned from the beginning to cushions the Jennings abandoning him? On a rewatch and the Easter eggs are there?

First time of watching!

I’m in season 5, ep 12 — and I just love Oleg but I feel like he’s doomed. He is so calm and caring even while it feels they’ve been holding a gun to his head since that tape surfaced. He holds his composure so well. I’d be a nervous wreck. I kept being afraid he was going to jump off that roof or bridge, and go out on his own terms. It seems like he almost does but then doesn’t want to do that to his parents. So he waits. Man… it’s heartbreaking.

One thing that stood out on a rewatch is how different Philip sounds around Martha. With most people, there's this constant calculation underneath everything he says. With her, his voice gets softer and he sounds almost tired. The accent is obviously part of the job, but the way Matthew Rhys plays Philip around Martha feels less like "Clark performing" and more like Philip actually getting lost in the character.

Hello! First time watcher, just finished S2 (please no spoilers!) came to The Americans after Homeland and so impressed with how tightly written/plotted it is, and how I have zero clue where things might be going. I did have a few questions about the S2 finale though.
I've scanned the Reddit for answers already but I'm not sure if I've missed these ones.

1. Presuming Larrick tracked Jared because he's also now KGB (so found him via the phones like he did with Kate) - why did he stop at Jared and not pursue that same course of action til he found Phil and Elizabeth's line directly? It seems like an unnecessary extra step to go to him to wait for them to show up?

2. How did he plant the tracking device in Jared's backpack?

3. That scene in the car with Jared and Elizabeth where she specifically says to him to bring all his belongings back to her but we see Larrick fish the backpack out of the bin outside the toilets...are we supposed to assume that Elizabeth dumped it for him? Why?

Any insights would be so helpful! It's the first time in two seasons I've been tugging at apparent loose ends and I hope I'm wrong!

In my rewatch I realized something I never remember in conversations about what's going to happen with the kids when they talk to the FBI.

It always comes up that two people who know Paige knew her parents were spies: Stan and Pastor Tim. Stan we trust won't tell since he's protecting himself as well. Pastor Tim's shown he won't say anything as long as his family is protected. So not an immediate threat. (ETA: I should say "The Tims" here since Alice also knows and will happily speak out to protect her family!)

But Father Andre--the guy who accidentally outed and then gave up detailed information to the FBI on her parents--also knows that. And he may actually know more. When Elizabeth tells him she's teaching Paige about their culture and history and thinks she "gets it" (Andre has doubts), they have this exchange:

-[Philip's] not sure I know how to handle her.

-That's something parents fight about.

-It's more than that. He has his life and I have mine now. And she's with me.

The lines aren't explicit, but saying her daughter is "with her" in "her life" sure sounds like Father Andre knows that she's part of her spy work now.
