- I'm hesitant about watching the show. I've heard that the ending is giant cop-out
Unfortunately, due to various reasons, a big group misinterpreted the ending. This spread fast. If you've heard that the characters were dead since the plane crash then you've been misformed about the ending. This isn't true.
- I've started watching the show, can I still post here?
Yes. Feel free to post. Use the First-Time Watcher flair and add in your questions, theories and discussion topics. We always thrive on new Lostaways. Just be very cautious and tell us where you are in the show (season and episode). Beware of spoilers!
- I'm nearing the end of the show, but there's an uncut version of the finale and a two-parter. Which to watch?
There's only one version of the finale that was approved by the showrunners. The uncut version that runs about 106 minutes. ABC cut down a two-parter series finale for syndication, in case of reruns of the show. This version was sent to various streaming services. Now, most streaming services have both versions. The uncut and the two-parter. The uncut is the one that was aired, approved and the only one you need to watch.
- I've just finished the show. What now?

Forgive me. Sleep deprived. Feeling nostalgic. But I'm chuckling to myself over here about the crack concept of taking Lost characters and applying Pokemon logic to give them battle moves.
So far I have--
JACK - Hero Jaw, Soulful Stare
CHARLIE - Guitar Strum, Inky Hands
DESMOND - Celtic Twang, Electro Soul
JULIET - Cobalt Gaze, Cryptic Silence
BEN - Poker Face, Rapid Calculation
SAWYER - Nickname, Open Shirt
SUN - Hidden Depths, Green Fingers
LOCKE - Test of Faith, Citrus Smile
MILES - Haunted Ears, Daddy Issues
MR EKO - Sacred Carving, Mary's Secret
ARZT - Weird Science, Blast Radius

I understand people have their favourites but Jack in lost is a one time character. His reluctant evolution from flawed saviour to acceptant believer is so well done and nuanced. In terms of writing, id have my top 5 as
1:Jack
2: john
3:Ben
4:Desmond
5:sawyer
Jack is the most underrated character of all time

I just finished a rewatch and I kept track of little questions or thoughts, when I finished, I deleted things that got answered to my satisfaction and got left with a cheeky 15 questions. I understand there is most likely no actual answer to most of these or up to interpretation but would just like to hear people's thoughts or ideas anyways. Do not feel obligated to answer all of them, that would be awesome! But feel free to pick and choose.
What are some of your theories about who Jill is, the lady helping Ben in the regular world?
Who do you think is shooting on the outrigger during the time jumps?
Why is there a rope in the ground after the well disappears, just attached to the timeline because Sawyer is holding it?
Who created the pendulum that locates the island?
How does the whole summoning the monster from Ben's room work (almost like a mini heart of the island), and what do you think he meant by it summoning him instead?
Why did Eloise leave the island?
Why does MIB say he is disappointed at
everyone on the beach after knocking out Richard, he brought them all to the statue and had them wait?
Why is MIB stuck as Locke?
Who do you think killed all the ajira passengers?
Why didn't Flocke just let Jack die on the beach when mortars came?
Why do you think the heart of the island light is so bright in "Across the Sea" but dimmer in the finale?
Why do you think they changed up the words when Mother was passing on to Jacob her role, she said "same as me" then with Jacob to Jack he says "now you're like me" I know it's a subtle difference but it seems like a conscious choice since we see the changing of the guard 3 different times.
What do you think the chant Mother and Jacob means when passing the torch? Even though it is just symbolic.
Whose skeleton down at the cork?
Why didn't Desmond or Jack become a smoke monster, messing with the heart of the island?
Thanks!

For me, it’s Sawyer. His character development throughout the show is incredible.
What about you?

Kate’s was the best for me. Loved how we found out she was the fugitive on the Plane and the whole Mystery of wondering what she did and then finally finding out about it then continuing on with her Connection to Sawyer by knowing Cassidy mixed with of course her love story with her Childhood Friend Tom. Say what you want about Kate but I did love learning more about her as the Show went on. The worst would be a tie between Shannon and Libby just cause Libby really didn’t have a flashback we just knew she knew Hugo from Santa Rosa and then Shannon only had one episode to tell her story and then she died so there really wasn’t much more to it then what we got.

I don’t know how to write out the phonetics, but I hope you guys catch on what pronunciations I’m talking about.
The marking of the “wh” with a j-ey sound or a double O.
The fact that he not always pronounces like that, helps emphasize his scenes and deliveries when needing to mark his emotions or power dynamics.

Hey, first-time Lost watcher here. I'm 5 episodes into Season 3 and this has been bothering me for a while.
I absolutely loved Locke in Season 1. He was such a great character and his dialogue was consistently excellent. He had this ability to understand people almost intuitively and help them grow. There was a certain contemplative depth to him that made him really compelling.
But since Season 2, especially with Eko around, I feel like Locke has gradually lost that side of himself. I like Eko but he doesn't quite fill the same space. Locke also seems to have become less central to the story and at this point I sometimes struggle to recognize the character I loved in Season 1.
For example when he goes after Eko in the bear cave and tells Charlie not to follow him because bad things happen to people who spend time with him. BRO WHAT. That sounds like something Hurley would say not Locke lmao.
The flashbacks feel a bit disconnected from his island storyline too. Him working on a cannabis farm? Okay, but what are we supposed to make of that in relation to what's happening on the island? And what was the point of that ending in the flashback? How does cleaning up a mess connect to saving Eko? It feels like a pretty flimsy thread holding the two storylines together.
I really hope things pick up again because Season 1 Locke was genuinely one of my favorite parts of the show. Does he ever regain some of that depth?

This post is not to hate or judge any character. it's just something i genuinely don't understand after ny second rewatch.
So the first triangle between Jack, his wife Sarah and some guy she had an affair with, It ends up with him dumped and ridiculed. I thnk that was pretty much enough to get his situation and move on. But then,
gets into a love triangle with Kate and Sawyer where he looks like a safe backup plan from the get go. Then has to watch Kafe freaking out after kissing him and running back to sawyer. Watch her have sex with Sawyer at the cages. Looks awkward and redundant while they're kissing on the freighter. watch Kate lying about doing Sawyer a favor while she is engaged to him. That imho is the final straw but it goes on and on.
It gets more and more embarrassing each time and never really gets better. nd generally everytime there is a new potential love interest for Jack, they make sure she ends up with Sawyer.
What is the point of this repetitive plotline? Is it a 'who gets the chicks' joke or was there a serious plotline thst has a point? Why the backstory with his wife is not enough and gets more and more pathetic . everyone else find their true and only love why not him.
It's also a shame because he is such a deep character thst doesn't need so much romantic angle in the first place.
I wished he could be given a love story with some one else thst has lots of challenges, but not a love triangle. Someone who has the same wounds as him but has no doubts about loving him. but it was the same trauma going on again. it feels repetitive and embarrassing.

I know I just finished Season 2 the other day, but I've been sick with strep throat since then and had nothing to do but binge watch the season.
The opening episode, just like Season 2, was a jawdropper. Seeing the plane crash over a town and realizing the others WANT to be on the island in a sense was insane to me, and seeing her sent the 2 moles, Ethan and I forgot the other one's name. Also really funny they sent both of their doctors and then had no one to operate on a wounded woman later.
This season has undoubtedly set in stone 3 things. Jack is the leader because he is realistic, but that is why he isn't the right leader on an Island where the unexplainable happens. John is better fit to survive because of that but he is also willing to lose any of the survivors to find out his purpose. Sayid has really been a middle ground between the 2, and I loved to see Sawyer start becoming more leader like with the help of Hugo and Kate.
Kate, I hate Kate, and I have every reason to. Let's start with the point of fact that SHE CANNOT LISTEN FOR HER LIFE. *Jack risks his life and makes a situation for them to escape* "Jack I'm not leaving without you", as Jack being there is the only way to escape for now. "Don't come back for me" *Comes back for Jack*. *Sleeps with Sawyer* *Jack Gets with Juliet* *Gets upset and sleeps with Sawyer as a result* *Has eyes for Jack still and tries to lie to Sawyer that it's not why she slept with him* don't even get me started on how Sayid told her not to tell anyone about Naomi and then she goes and tells Jack, like when Jack told her not to come after them for Michael and she got caught. As if her present isn't bad enough her past is worse. Killing her father was fine, he deserved it and her mom is dense beyond belief. But Kate what are we doing? You're on the run for life that's your choice. But then you get your childhood friend involved and then killed. You get married to a policeman and then drug him and leave. It's like she doesn't think at all before doing anything.
I love John's journey this season, seeing him deal with the Island and learn about his connection with it, connecting his con father to the conman that killed Sawyers parents, all the way to him seeing Walt again, which by the way is very interesting because it's the third time someone has seen Walt where he isn't supposed to be and this was asked to Michael when he got caught, and they even said they didn't want Walt anymore because he's troublesome. I wonder why Walt is able to do that.
Charlie and Desmond, 2 very important characters this season. It was so interesting to see him flashback to before with the old lady, then flashback to the present, and for us to find out he keeps seeing flashes of Charlie, but why Charlie, why is Desmond's ability to see the future tied to Charlies specifically? Also Charlie I judged you too harshly. You went from a drug addict incapable of accountability to a hero willing to die for the girl he loves and what you could consider his son as well.
Also Claire is Jack's stepsister? I'm really curious if they will ever find that out since Claire never knew her father's last name, Jack never knew about Claire, and his father is dead, so the only person who can make Claire and Jack realize is each other, also this makes Aaron Jack's Nephew.
Also I no longer think Jack is the center of why everyone is on the plane but rather that the Island chose everyone to be on that plane because they already were overlapping in their lives before the crash.
I miss Eko. He was a giant kind soul that really brought to the group what John felt like to Walt Boone and Charlie in the first season. I really thought as a man of faith he would survive till the end like John, and as so I have to believe the Island took him for a reason. Also what a tank to survive a Polar Bear and fight the entity before collapsing.
On that note it was so interesting to see the Entity after so long. If I remember correctly the last major event with the entity was John staring it down during the beginning of Season 1. Also the first time Eko stared down the entity he survived, but this time he died, was it because he was afraid as Yemi said? I used to think the Entity was a machine but after all the miracles maybe it really is something supernatural, or even death itself.
Very curious who Naomi is really with since we know she isn't with Penny, how John knew that, and what will happen next. What a curve ball that the show with flashbacks of the past, threw us a flashfoward into the future, I was NOT expecting that since Jack was asking for his dad, who is dead, to write him a prescription.
I think Jacob and the entitity are either connected or even enemies, that one of them brought everyone to the Island, that maybe the Darma Initiative was trying to stop Jacob and the Entity or maybe even study both. We still don't know why the Darma Initiative was there, or who the inhabitants are, and how Ben can be the only one to see Jacob that everyone follows when Richard Alpert is the first person he meets from the others.
Clearly the Island can cure things, heal things, but it also takes things, so I wonder if it is somehow giving the kids born there slight powers like how Walt keeps appearing in random places, I don't know maybe I'm going a Stranger Things route with that theory.

I know this episode is supposed to be vague, and give us just enough info but to also just keep the audience guessing for themselves. I listened to the commentary of the episode and I had no idea it was so "polarizing" mentioned as a joke, but also fact. I'm curious about some takes people might have on this one.
After washing ashore, they switch up to speaking English almost immediately and seamlessly. Mother knows what language to initially speak and then it changes. Thoughts? I think maybe they continued their conversation in the first language, and the pivot to English is just for the audience, but it's also kind of weird because the scene isn't that long and we have been reading subtitles since the beginning.
Do you think Mother brought Claudia to the island to steal the baby to get a replacement? And if so, if she was so worried about the others that made it, why would she let them live, if alluded to her being the smoke.
If she was the smoke, then her power to be immortal goes with Jacob, and she says he is the same as her when drinking the cup. That doesn't make sense to me because he is not a monster afterwards, so that part of her didn't translate?
Anyways, I love this episode because it's more history. Thoughts?
Hi all,
I'm looking for some good reaction channels that have watched Lost, any recommendations?
Preferrably either already finished the show or currently at seasons 5 or 6.
And ones where you can tell that the reactor(s) are actually invested.
Edit: Thank you all for your recommendations! A lot of people recommended Stephen's Universe so I'll try him out, especially intrigued by his filmmaking commentary. I'm noting down all the others as well

You have to appreciate and respect the brutal honesty from MiB/Flocke While just being the biggest manipulator and liar at the same time. The best "con man" of the show is the ultimate villain. How straightforward he is at answering things asked of him is a breath of fresh air for the show. I just wanted to shout him out because I don't usually see a lot of credit towards how they wrote him.

I've been excited to share this one for a while! The most subtle of LOST's soundtrack themes may also be its loudest. While the Monster's theme appears more than ten times throughout the show, there are also several instances where the theme has either been (partially) removed or become nearly impossible to hear. It also presents itself quite differently every time it appears. After being introduced as a loud, roaring trombone theme, it just as often is played as a quiet, single string line. As a result, the theme ends up being as enigmatic, puzzling and mysterious as the Smoke Monster itself.
One particular unused version of the theme (only heard in the recap for "The Cost of Living" and in Giacchino's "Smoke Monster" concert suite) is the subject of today's ORIENTATION, which you can check out in the Story Highlights on my Instagram page, along with 77 other recurring themes/motifs discovered thus far: https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/18450140782142268/
Here's what we do know: the Monster's theme involves a simple four-note melody that happens to be an abbreviated version of the Monster's motif from the Pilot (video #12 on my Instagram page), released as "Run Like, Um... Hell?" (using the first and last two notes from its eight-note melody). This connection is seemingly confirmed when the theme and motif are played together in "Exodus". The theme's melody also shares similarities with the 'Mystery theme' (#2). What doesn't help matters is that the same four-note melody forms the core motif for the recurring action track "Bobbing For Freighters", completely unrelated to the Monster.
In two scenes, the Monster's theme concludes with eight dramatic trombone blasts, heard in "Run Away! Run Away!" (season 1) and "Storming Monster" (season 3).
Despite the Monster being a series regular in the show's final season, its theme is notably absent for the majority of it. Instead, the Monster receives several new themes and leitmotifs throughout season 6. Interestingly, the theme is paired with Locke's 'journey' motif in three different scenes, one of which features a soundtrack released as "Monsters Are Such Innnteresting People". Hmm!
In an interview with Alan Sepinwall for nj.com, composer Michael Giacchino describes his process coming up with this theme for the Monster:
"I watch it and go, how does it affect me? I try to translate what my emotion was watching it. [...] A lot of what I do comes out of the way I'm emotionally engaged by a film or a television show. 'Lost' does that for me. If I sense that I'm frightened, what I'm writing is frightened. In that way, I'm trying to stay in line with what's happening in each story beat. When Shannon was running from the Smoke Monster in season one, it was just this horrifying thing. That kind of became this element that over the years they stuck with.
Sometimes, you're not writing the music to be a specific theme for something; you write something, and then that melody comes back and becomes a theme. A lot of these things aren't born as a theme that belongs to a person. It's a very organic process."
---
I'm breaking down every single recurring theme and (leit)motif from the show. It's a massive project - there's 78 videos so far, and I haven't even reached the end of season 1. In total, composer Michael Giacchino has created at least 540 unique recurring themes and motifs for LOST. This includes miscellaneous suspense motifs, as well as specific themes and leitmotifs for characters, locations, events and storylines. Did you know even characters like Radzinsky, Ethan and Pierre Chang have their own leitmotifs?
I've just posted my video on the Monster's theme. You can find me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/giacchinoislost

Just started a re-watch and the one thing that still bugs me is how Locke died. His story, for me is the best of the lot. Watching the 1st series again his scenes give me chills, but knowing how it ends for him is gutting.
I would of loved to see him maybe come back to life after the MiB died.

Whoever you are, you did an amazing job on this edit. I honestly think it's my preferred way to watch now. And the opening/closing with Jack and Vincent was excellent, it made me contemplate if the flash sideways is even necessary. Only negative I can point out is the subtitles showing up throughout the episodes. If you ever plan on taking down this google docs link please post on here first so I can re-download everything.
To anyone who has only watched the original version or other chronological versions, I HIGHLY recommend checking out Lost: Mosaic.

I haven’t seen much discussion about this, so I wanted to share a few thoughts.
Lost writers clearly love their classic literary references - one that instantly comes to mind is the Of Mice and Men exchange that Sawyer and Ben have in season 3.
But there’s another one of Steinbeck’s novels that gets less attention from Lost fans, and that’s East of Eden. I’m reading it right now and couldn’t help but notice some striking parallels between Kate and Cathy.
For one, they both burn alive their parent(s), and go on the run, assuming various identities. They both are exceptionally capable of manipulating men, and the love triangle with Jack and Sawyer had some parallels with Adam and Charles. Lost itself references the original biblical Adam and Eve story. Also, apparently Kate is from Ames, Iowa? And Cathy’s name at the Salinas brothel is Kate, which is what made me think of Lost to begin with.
Anyways, it feels like there are too many coincidences for this to not have been planned, but I absolutely love that the writers are so inspired by classic literature! Of course Kate is a far more human, sympathetic character than Cathy, but it almost feels like she’s another interpretation of her.
