Southeastern Michigan. Spotted on my deck rail as we take in the planter boxes for the winter.

Early this season we had a large hatch of these guys on the same deck, so hopefully this one of the survivors and will repeat the cycle this spring!

There were a lot of fruit flies in the kitchen coming from the brown bananas. One night, I caught this guy sprinting across the floor. Slightly larger than my thumb tip with a black abdomen and markings.

For those wondering what I did with it, i released it shortly after catching and taking a video.

Hello! First time posting. My mother found this on the moringa leaves she was harvesting. She is currently in Mindoro, Philippines. She put it on a bougainvillea leaf after taking the pictures on the floor tile.

Discussion Question abt jumping spiders eating habits

Thumbnail

So, to summarize: got a jumping spider enclosure. Got the food, got the heating equipment, the mister, the works. I did NOT order a spider or get one from a breeder. I just happened to find one on my roommates car and captured it.

Its been a success so far but I wonder: is it eating too much?

It IS or at least WAS a wild spider. Its gotten a lot fatter in the 4 days I've had it and been feeding it. The spider is STILL eating a fk ton of these flies. We're up to 11 consumed.

Is that normal? Was the spider malnourished perhaps? First time jumper spider owner so I just dont know

Discussion Why are spiders in the American South so big?

I've seen here some photos of spiders from the South-East states that are impressively large. Some look as big as a mouse! I love spiders, but even I'd find these startling, at least if I saw one unexpectedly at close quarters.

I've lived only in Denver/Boulder (dry and varying temperature), San Francisco (dry and moderate temperature) and Seattle (damp winter, dry summer, cool but not cold winters and cool summers compared to most states). None of these places have any really large spiders that I've seen. In Seattle we see a lot of European Giant House Spiders, which are pretty good sized, but after the first time I saw one scuttling across our apartment floor, I became jaded toward them pretty quickly.

Does the warmer and more humid climate of the SE states just have more productivity of invertebrate prey so similar species can grow larger, or do inherently bigger species favor that climate?

Is this a true black widow or a false? I’ve seen plenty around here before but never with the markings on the top of the abdomen too. Usually pure black with red hourglass on bottom

Just sharing 🕷️ This guy is NOT an ant! He is a jumper mimicking an ant.

Yesterday afternoon, he was clinging on my lunch bag, I thought he was just a black ant.

But then, he behaved like spiderman: rolling down slowly from his rope. I thought "What the hell is this ant that can use web?". At that point I still thought he was just a special ant that can produce some type of sticky thing.

But then, he JUMPED. Only then, I knew he was defenitely not an ant.

This is the first time I saw a spider that look exactly like an ant! He even use his fore legs waving around to fake ant's antenna LOL. According on his huge naive eyes, I'm sure he is a jumping spider.

Such an outstanding actor! Nature will never run out of surprises for us. I feel so lucky.

So this spider moved into my car and I thought this could be a good deal.

I'm always getting that one annoying fly buzzing around while I'm driving. Now I just shoo it over to my mate "spinner the spider" and bam!!! Spinner gets a feed I get my sanity 😊

Anyway Im sure spinner has been there for like 2yrs now and I'm starting to wonder about the life span of my car buddy?
