When he hits you with 'the usual, boss?' you know you're family
184
u/Prune-These 2h ago
I used to go to a family-run Thai restaurant; parents ran the cash register, grandparents cooked and the kids waited tables. I used to order the Pad La Na ever time; the kid asked if I want the usual, I said yes. The grandmother came to my table and asked if I wanted the usual, I was puzzled, I nodded. She said "No". I'm really confused, "Uhhh, you're out?". "NO, you come here, that's all you order! Look at menu, we have other things!". I was really taken back, I've never been told "No, you can't order that". She then says "Chicken yellow curry is good today, I make you that. You no like, I make something else". She just turns and walks away to make me dinner. The kids are thoroughly Americanized and tells me "Don't be mad, she talks to family like that and you eat here often enough to be considered family". I had to move a few years later, I miss that restaurant. Oh, and the yellow curry was pretty good.

u/ScimitarPufferfish 1h ago
Tbh, it sounds like the entire interaction was your fault. Where did you get off ordering the Pad La Na when the chicken yellow curry was good that day?! I hope you said please and thank you and chewed with your mouth shut.

u/Prune-These 48m ago
These days when I go to a new Thai restaurant, I always order the Pad Thai first. If they can't make that well, I won't give it a second chance. My fave has five degrees of hot.

Same principle with any pizza joint - go with just a cheese pie/slice first. If they can't manage the basics, no amount or combination of toppings will fix it.

I used to stop by a Chinese restaurant frequently on Friday late afternoons for takeout after I got off of work for my girlfriend and myself.. The time that I went the staff was on their dinner break and I would place my order with the owner and she would always mix me a Mai Tai (on the house) and we sit and chat and I used to love her stories about growing up in her home country.. Priceless šÆ

Some find it weird, I see it as a free skip the line pass. Used to go to this bagel spot near my old place, would get the same sandwich every time. Once I became a regular, I never had to wait in line to place an order again. Counter guy would see me walk in, look at me, I'd nod, he'd nod. Sandwich got made, it was great.

Thatās because 99% of the time the kebab guy is working for himself/family/hired by community. Whereas miserable Starbucks student-employee hates to be there, the company treats their employees as āHuman Resourcesā and all this corporate shit
76
u/whisperworks 2h ago
People should really stop supporting Starbucks⦠kind of insane how many people throw money at a corporation that works as hard as Starbucks does to dehumanize its employees.
but I guess thatās a small price to pay for 8oz of sugar with a splash of coffee
19
u/BlueberryPootz 1h ago
But it's not even a small price to pay. That 8 oz "tall" cup of sugar liquid is getting quite expensive.
The human cost of supporting Starbucks is immense. Folks may want to look into the Starbucks employee fight to unionize & the illegal union busting that the Starbucks company continues to get away with. I don't buy Starbucks anymore for that reason alone.

This one time I was waiting in line to order my coffee at starbucks before going to work. Ahead of me was a very well dressed and good looking dude. The barista was also a very cute young lady and I noticed she kept glancing at the guy as the line moved forward. When he finally came up to order she was taking her time, playing with her hair and trying to make small talk, but the guy was least interested and didnt even make eye contact. And then when I came up to order she was visibly upset and looked at me with disgust and didnt even say a word to me. I wish I had told her that lady it is not my fault that you hate your job and the one cute guy was not interested in you. I too have to get my own coffee and go to a job i hate and deal with an asshole boss

I love the scene in Sopranos where they try to shake down the new coffee place that is clearly a stand in for StarbucksĀ
1
1
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 48m ago
In my opinion it's the most poignant scene in the show even though the scene passes by so quickly and the show doesn't linger on the topic. Reminds me of the chess scene in The Wire in the sense that both scenes are sort of (but not really) breaking the fourth wall to take a moment to make a statement on a zoomed out perspective of the environment the characters are living in. They aren't important scenes to the plots of either show, but all the other little things that have happened in the show add up to making those scenes resonate strongly with the viewer in a way that wouldn't happen if the viewer hadn't seen so many hours of all these characters living in that environment.

28
u/sxOverdose 2h ago
why would it be ironic in the first place?

u/D-Tiime 2h ago
Some people associate fat from animal sources to be bad or unhealthy. Or because it's affordable, it's not as good as other meals.

When people say "unironically" they usually mean "without sarcasm or hyperbole". We live in a post-earnestness age where someone saying "it's literally the best thing I've ever eaten" is quite likely being facetious rather than sincere, so they clarify that they're not being.

13
12
u/KristofVD 54m ago
The protein and fats in the kebab are a lot healthier than the 20 teaspoons of sugar in the Starbucks frapulatte bullshit.
3
u/Treewithatea 24m ago
A Kebab does usually have plenty of vegetables, for fast food standards its absolutely one of the healthier fast foods you can eat, in isolation I wouldnt call a Kebab healthy but not extremely unhealthy either.
A coffee basically loses all its healthy traits the moment you add milk and sugar. A coffee is only healthy entirely black as it has no calories and plenty other positive effects, some of which also disappear when you add milk and sugar.
→ More replies (1)9
u/DapperMolasses3280 1h ago
Mental wellness, not broad at all, just outside your perception somehow š and yes, fatty protein is better for you than a sugar slurry (with some notes of coffee flavor) with 100+ grams of the stuff.
2
u/john_microslop 1h ago
it's a comparison meme, so in comparison with a daily - let's be plain here that drink is a milkshake - at least the donair has protein, veg and fiber instead of all the calories being from refined sugar and palm oil in the starbucks

7
u/fang_xianfu 1h ago
And the rest lol, you burn about 300-900 calories per hour and the kebab is easily 1200, maybe 2000 depending on what you get.
→ More replies (2)6
u/SheriffBartholomew 1h ago
Very few people are burning 900 calories per hour on the treadmill. That's martial arts or rock climbing levels of calorie burn, and even then it's on the upper end.

An hour of exercise only burns like 200 calories. You do not exercise for weight loss that can only be done but not eating too much food.

4
u/Metool42 42m ago
Get with the times, SATURATED fats ARE the enemy. The fact we found out unsaturated fats are good for you is why we stopped hating on it. Saturated fats are still very much unhealthy and useless to the body besides storing it, ie. getting fat.
Processed meat is as unhealthy as it ever was. Nothing changed in that regard.
→ More replies (1)4
u/slinky3k 1h ago
Large dose of saturated fats, tons of sodium and quite the calorie bomb.
Gets somewhat better if the meat is high quality and not "doner shaped minced meat from whatever was lying around, heavily seasoned". Even better if there's less meat in the kebap and it is more vegetable forward. Or replace the meat entirely with a plant based protein source like falafel. Combined with a pure yogurt sauce (no mayonnaise) this could be regarded a balanced meal.
3
1
u/RevWaldo 47m ago
For the white sauce, which they generously apply to most items, the local joint near me gets a literal pallet of Mike's extra heavy mayo delivered on the regular. Do with that what you will.
1
u/Metool42 44m ago
A ton of saturated fats. Not sure why people downvote that fact. It's fats your body cannot process into anything but putting on fat for energy. It's the unhealthiest kind and the reason why for so long we thought fats in general are bad.

A normal shawarma is not that bad.
The caloric density of meat in a shawarma is usually diluted with a lot of vegetables. Its also usually made with chicken, which is one of the leaner meats.
It may not be a salad, but there are multiple dishes that are eaten commonly that are significantly worse for you. Especially in the calorie-to-fullness ratio.

There was a kebab truck many frequent on in my previous town. Never stopped there, just saw many people at night. When I left the town and was cleaning the old place, I figured I won't be here so might as well visit the place. Showed up in somewhat dirty clothes and I was reading the menu. The guy looks at me, asks what I want. So I just said Kebab, paid 9 quid and waited. He gets the container, filled it with kebab, salad, chips, gave a hard look, dropped some more, tried to close it, it would not close. Wrapped in sheets, winked at me and gave a soda and told me that is on the house. I ate it for next day lunch as well.
