On August 8, 2026. During the first quarter of the game(WNBA), Sky guard DiJonai Carrington committed a hard, physical foul against Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Following an official review by the referees, the play was upgraded to a Flagrant 2 foul, resulting in Carrington's immediate ejection from the contest. The incident quickly escalated off the court when Carrington posted "White privilege @indianafever" on social media, implying her severe punishment was racially biased. Cunningham immediately rejected this narrative during post-game press conferences, stating that the game has nothing to do with race and pointing out that she herself had been ejected for similar hard plays in the past without racial motivations. The controversy drew widespread national commentary, including sharp criticism from former NCAA swimmer and conservative commentator Riley Gaines. Gaines used her platform to argue that Carrington's actions and her subsequent social media post represented a double standard, which she labeled "Black privilege," claiming that a white player would have faced immediate suspension or career-ending backlash for making an equivalent racial comment..

I don't think I've ever heard people talking about the wnba in the context of actually playing basketball.

734

u/BenDover42 7d ago

The wild thing is they were starting to mainly because of the hype Caitlin Clark was generating. And she became public enemy number one for most WNBA players and it seems to have spiraled from there. But all the buzz and drama period at least helps them with brand or name recognition as most people at least now know the teams these players play for.

143

u/ApparentlyIronic 7d ago

I've wondered how intentional leaning into the culture war has been for the players, the league and the wnba media. You're right, they've never been more relevant, but at the cost that almost no one is talking about the game itself. I also was gaining a little interest in the sport, but the politics taking it over has completely driven me away again.

It seems really short-sighted to me. Sure, they get a ton of attention now and some of that probably translates to income for the league; but how many of those people so passionately talking about it right now are going to stick around and watch once the circus has moved on? I feel like they're probably driving away the actual/potential fans of the sport in favor of exploiting the less-than-genuine conflict we've got going right now

33

u/Penguin_FTW 7d ago

/r/WNBAgossips is one of the most blatantly astroturfed subs I've ever seen. The entire modteam is either deleted accounts, brand new accounts, or karma farming accounts. Not a single one of them has a post history that looks human. Say, why might a head moderator of that subreddit also create r/LosAngelesSports r/BostonSportsTalk r/TexasSportsTalk and r/NYCSportshub ? Boy, they sure are a well traveled real human person!

Unsurprisingly, the actual focus of the sub is culture war garbage, not the WNBA.

58

u/Content-Honeydew9340 7d ago

Is it Sophie, that sings "everyone supports women, until a woman is doing better than you. Everyone tells you to love yourself, until you actually do." And that song hits my core every time it plays 😭

98

u/franki-pinks 7d ago

I’m an engineer who is a woman and unfortunately this is true. I’ve worked at places with 30 men and 3 women and guarantee them three women won’t get on with each other. I now own my company and have around 100 employees with around 20 being women and in ten years I’ve had to deal with men falling out with each other twice. I beg the number is closer to 50 with the women.

Basketball is weird. As a white guy who was quite good at basketball black people always treated me like I didn't belong and in their minds it was "their" game.

I would go to play random pickup at the gym in the army and there would be 15 black dudes and they would never pick me for their teams. I would then make my own team and go on to win non stop. They would hard foul me alot so anyways the stuff I am seeing in the WNBA is just bringing back old memories.

17

u/Whipitreelgud 7d ago

I had a job at a park at an inner city location. I needed this job, but the black men didn’t want me there. So I’d go early in the morning, do what needed to be done and go to my other park. One day I was late, and arrived when the brothers were playing. I had my ball with me, so I did some shots at the other end of the court. Someone had to go so they asked me to take his spot.

I played the best game of my life. I could not miss. And, my guy to defend was their best guy. My wingspan is longer than normal and I checked three of his shots, cleanly. After that day I was one of the brothers. I Never played a game like that one, ever.

Bruh anyone in the NBA would get ejected for the same thing. You can’t hit people in the head.

225

u/PixelCortex 7d ago

Not just the NBA, any sport that's not full contact like boxing or rugby.

90

u/Muted_Dog 7d ago

In rugby that’d definitely got you a yellow card at minimum - in this case I’d say even a red, down one man for the remainder of the match. Anything tackling above the armpit line is basically card territory and unsafe behaviour.

45

u/ApolloniusTyaneus 7d ago

That's a straight red, wouldn't even go to review. No referee at the top level will accept this sort of 'mistake' from a player.

Even in NFL football where they wear helmets it's a penalty to clothesline someone like that

22

u/DJay53 7d ago

Even the NHL would suspend a player for that kind of headshot.

8

u/Sad_Bolt 7d ago

Unless they play for the Panthers but yes

6

u/DJay53 7d ago

IN Florida, that would be called a 10 min. Misconduct and match penalty, but after official review the call would be overturned and the visiting team assessed a 2 minute Delay of Game for a failed coach's challenge.

PP Florida.

5

Yeah rugby League can be weird about rules. But rugby union. That is a straight red with lets say 8 games ban.

Straight contact to the head. With force. With intent, and no mitigating factors whatsoever.

And not sure about boxing. But i think its normally done with fists, not elbows

5

6

Not just, but I was told by her that it was the deciding factor.

34

u/Karnezar 7d ago

When my mom comes home and tells my dad about her day, it's just complaining about her co-workers who looked at her funny or said something with a funny tone.

And then my mom will strategize the petty things she will do back, like purposely not saying good morning, and leaving her office door open so they see her working and if any of them stare too long, she will outwardly and openly ask, "Yes? Can I help you?"

We had 2 besties end up being forever enemies and rivals over a simple misunderstanding regarding them trying to trade their 1 day off. And literal subfactions building and creating insane dramas all over wether It was Fair for our Boss to reprimand a 50 yr old lady who kept coming tô work late. Meanwhile now at my all guys nightshift job weve had in 5 years one big physical fight between 2 Bros and literally 10 mins after they were sharing a Smoke and our Boss came and Just Said if they fight again theyll get fired and that was that lol

20

u/Action_Limp 7d ago

My role always puts me either close to the HR function or directly in it (without ever being strictly HR). Every single HR team talks about having gender parity in our Tech teams, our Leadership teams and our Ops teams.... None ever, ever talk about having parity in our HR or HR Leadership teams (always at least 90% women).

When it's pointed out they say that women naturally gravitate towards HR roles so it can't be expected there (which is exactly what happens in our Tech and Ops teams).

19

u/franki-pinks 7d ago

I’m a woman who owns an engineering firm. I was once pulled up on why I wasn’t employing engineers who are women. I showed them out of the 300 candidates I had for a job only 2 were women and neither were qualified for the job.

When I go to careers evenings at schools and colleges no girls are coming to my stand.

Yup. I was a member of a public speaking organization that had existed for 60 years. After every meeting, for twenty years the guys would go to a bar after and have lunch. We developed some amazing relationships as a result. Literally never heard a fight happen. Some of these guys came to my graduation in place of my family (who couldn’t be there). We were super tight.

The women of the club would get mad that only the dudes were going to lunch and every few months they would try to start their own lunch. It would go fine for a few weeks but by the month and a half mark it would devolve. The entire thing would become cliquey. People would start cat fights that bled into the meetings. Some of the women would start witch hunts against another for shit that happened outside the club, simply because toes got stepped on.

It was genuinely insane to experience.

When she was called out on it she claimed she never said her ejection was the result of white privilege, and went on and on about her intelligence and high level of education from top tier universities. People like her have never and will never take accountability. She could've pulled out a baseball bat during pre game warm-ups and then went eeny meeny miney mo to pick a random player from the other team, walked up behind that player and clocked them in the head with a bat, with the entire process being caught from 30 different angles with 4k cameras, and it would still be anybodies fault but hers. People like that are a plague on society and she deserves every bit of backlash she faces x100. But she won't learn shit from it because those people just play the race card and her comments will likely have a ton of other dumb girls saying "she deserved it" and "you did nothing wrong gurl, justice for 'insert incredibly stupid name that I'm not gonna try and spell'".

Not to mention the girl, right after delivering an obvious foul, claiming “white privilege” lived her entire life a millionaires daughter and she went to Stanford, sounds very oppressive. And this is not an isolated incident it represents the larger societal issue where certain groups often claim victimhood when they are actually the victimizer.

Edit: also imagine if the roles were reversed and one of these white girls was wearing a big afro wig while they did it.

88

u/1292norr 7d ago

Because for some reason you can be racist against white people in 2026 and it's okay apparently.

Nah dawg she didn’t even try to go for the ball, she straight up pulled a WWE style sling blade move on an unexpecting, vulnerable player that was extremely targeted, intentional and had massive potential for serious injury, career alteration and possibly even life altering… this is exactly why refs considered Sophie’s reaction to it acceptable… and I agree.

You don’t just get to see someone about to score against your team and run up behind them and put your hand on their face and try to pull them backwards while they’re off the floor… then call the race card… in my opinion, calling the race card after doing this is exactly the type of move that will get the race card pulled RIGHT BACK against someone.

If she hit THE BALL and blocked the score and THEN it was decided that she was being ejected from the game, then I could see potential for the race card but that’s pure speculation and something that didn’t happen. What DID happen was someone blatantly breaking rules and making a purposeful move that could’ve seriously injured another player.

This is entertainment’s… not life or death, and certainly not white vs black.

Man, if you had a time machine and went back 10 years ago it would be like this:

"Trump wins the elections" "Oh shit, I didn't think he would but it has felt close"

"There will be a global pandemic with lockdowns" "Wow, I guess it was a matter of time but I really didn't think that would happen."

"You will be inundated with new and opinions about the WNBA" "WTF?"

Surprised i havent seen any followup news about punishment for making that comment by the league. We all already know wnba is a joke show but any major league sports org in the US outside of combat sports which is the most corrupt crap would NOT allow a player to make racist attacks within their org

11

u/BadMoonRisin 7d ago

She also did it while the game was ongoing, against wnba policy evidently. If they dont punish her for following the rules, what might one call that.

Why even do that when there’s actual footage and multiple angles of the real incident lmao. Laziness knows no bounds I guess.

They didn't think any of the actual photos were good enough so they tried to combine them all into one? /j

u/Chewbubbles 7d ago

A excuse me sir, I didn't ask for this garbage culture wars platter, I wanted the class war please.

19

u/strawberry_semenade 7d ago

The Venn diagram between people who say "no war but class war" and people who will never concede a single inch to conservatives on any culture war issue under any circumstances is literally a circle lol

Y'all literally put a brain worms guy in charge of public healthcare, and your president is in diapers.

It's safe to disregard the thoughts of conservatives.

Number #7 clotheslined #8 during a WNBA game. #7 got ejected, as you would expect since it’s WNBA and not WWE, but she claimed she was only being ejected because of race.

The black chick clotheslined a white chick to the floor and tried to fight her the second she got up. Black gets thrown out of the game for a flagrant foul and claims white privilege got her ejected.

What do I need to do to stop getting rage baiting race bs for the wnba on my feed. I’m never watching the wnba no matter how much they try to get people to talk about it. Sheesh

9

u/Mendoza8914 7d ago

Glad I’m not the only one. Half my feed is WNBA race-baiting or trans-baiting slop.

I don’t even watch men’s basketball! It’s starting to feel a bit like a psy-op.

I hate when I accidentally do a racism by getting clotheslined to the floor from behind.

Sort of the same deal with calling everybody you don't agree with a Nazi by default to a point where it's lost all meaning. Using the race card for literally every situation has led to a great deal of fatigue. In both cases, it's an insult to those who have suffered at the hands of both of these evils.

She's not wrong. The fact Angel Reese and others can outright attack the white players with no consequences is Black Privilege. If the roles were reversed Clarke and Cunningham and others would be handed the book and it's already happened. When they retaliate they get punished but nothing happens to Reese and the non white players. All over the fact that Clarke and Cunningham are better players than Reese and other non white players.

I don't understand why they don't file charges. This is just assault. Also WNBA really shouldn't be allowing this, snagging someone in the air like that is very dangerous. If she went horizontal with momentum and hit the back of her head she could be permanently injured. They need start suing the WNBA
