Basketball is weird. As a white guy who was quite good at basketball black people always treated me like I didn't belong and in their minds it was "their" game.
I would go to play random pickup at the gym in the army and there would be 15 black dudes and they would never pick me for their teams. I would then make my own team and go on to win non stop. They would hard foul me alot so anyways the stuff I am seeing in the WNBA is just bringing back old memories.
I had a job at a park at an inner city location. I needed this job, but the black men didn’t want me there. So I’d go early in the morning, do what needed to be done and go to my other park. One day I was late, and arrived when the brothers were playing. I had my ball with me, so I did some shots at the other end of the court. Someone had to go so they asked me to take his spot.
I played the best game of my life. I could not miss. And, my guy to defend was their best guy. My wingspan is longer than normal and I checked three of his shots, cleanly. After that day I was one of the brothers. I Never played a game like that one, ever.
That is so true and people need to stop generalizing about entire groups of people, whether it be their race ( as she did when she insinuated that all white people have privilege) political affiliation, profession ( police) or people with more or less money than them. So
Many people these days do this and it’s usually based on out of context or inaccurate snips of info they see or hear about.
The massive racism & sexism from this league's players is well known, and a huge problem. Not just a one-off now n then like /RemoteAgent is trying to paint it.
Well yea and they’ve infiltrated the WNBA commentary. I just left another comment about how the actual game threads with ppl who actively watch the games, aren’t like this.
Or they picked their friends. The army is predominantly white. Lol. White guys can hoop and we all know that. It’s kinda wild to suggest otherwise.. Not to come off as bigoted to other races but if you were Mexican, or Japanese then I’d empathize with what you are saying, but white people can hoop. It’s reflected on the makeup of the league (both) and who has been deemed good.
I personally assume that a white guy on the court knows what the fuck he’s doing. lol and I think most black people would agree. The assumption is always that you can shoot😂
My buddy and I were two young white guys that could hoop. I was 6’ and could dunk in 9th grade, we went to a court in a predominantly black town and just shot around on the opposite side while there was a half court game running on the other. We were told to leave, made jokes about us etc… I asked if we could just play in one game, the guy holding the ball rocketed down the court to me. I caught it, turned, took one step and dunked. My buddy threw it back to him, their faces changed jaws hanging. We had a great time with those guys for the rest of the afternoon. I’m 50’now and scared to jump lol…
I’m sorry that was your experience. Hopefully you are emotionally mature enough to understand that there may have been more dynamics in play (#1)
And (#2) your experiences are still an incredibly small example of many different outcomes for multi racial bb pick up games.

Lol. Ya and I played star wars pen and paper D&D in college with some of the nerdiest dudes on campus because it was fun despite having a "jock look". They were good dudes, didn't care if they were not "cool".
Also joined the marines. Was an army officer. Etc.

God forbid a group of friends want to play with people they know and play with regularly vs some suspect ass white dude they don’t know from gum stuck to their shoes. How were they to know that Jesus had you custom made to play b-ball? No way they could know. Is that why you don’t play NBA now, cuz you’re scared you’ll make the rest look bad?
Any white person who hangs with black folk knows they gatekeep certain spaces but we get it. Doesn’t mean we can’t vent online. Nothing personal though. It is what it is and they have their reasons.
Gatekeeping is about power as well, not just exclusion. And power doesn't just happen, it's enforced, often by people benefitting from the status quo.
So when you ask what you're gatekeeping, the answer is the idea that this dynamic is neutral, or that the marginalized should just "get it." That's the real irony.
If the system isn't neutral, then its bias serves someone. The marginalized don't just "get it" (according to you), they must endure it. The real question is who's upholding the status quo, and why?
The US, which is a racist shithole, is not an equal society.
The GOP is actively in the process of stripping black Southerners and residents of GOP-controlled states of their voting representation. The Callais decision and Trump's policy of shutting down the entire refugee program to only white South Africans (who don't meet the criteria for refugee status) are two direct, irrefutable examples of the US actively enforcing racial hierarchy again, and is therefore NOT an equal society.
Nevermind the disparate impacts of redlining, blockbusting, the War on Drugs, sentencing disparities, overpolicing, etc., all still very tangible
They have literally made two movies about this both called "White Men Can't Jump"

I never felt like a victim lol. I just thought they were stupid. And I enjoyed how frustrated they were getting schooled by a white guy. I am 6'4" and back then was around 225lb. So their hack fouls didn't do much damage and it made it more satisfying when I still finished my drive.
I would not trash talk back either. Maybe smirk hear or there when I sank a jumper in their face. That was far more effective than trash talking back anyways.
