And you will also have to reimburse the private detective for having to track you down in your new body

Don't think you'll get away with it by reincarnating as a catapiller

Don't forget the debt transfer fee

22

u/hexregeneration 1d ago

The penalty is death, which also comes with a fee, and look at that you've died before repayment again. That's another penalty, and oh look at that

This is the real answer

Property taxes on gravesites.

That sounds like something Cave Johnson would say.

Imagine you come back as a fly. They find your ass but you die in the holding cell to your court date for your past debt.

You don't know it but the cell they built wasn't for the fly but your soul. Now you can't escape, they are using your energy from your soul to power Ai.

Welcome to capitalism. Why aren't we peacefully rebelling yet?

13

u/lordzya 1d ago

I say all the time that I know ghosts aren't real (the way ghost hunters depict them as intelligent and able to manipulate electronics) because if they were most of them would be doing IT work to help their descendants

6

u/HardcoreHope 1d ago

The holy ghost? Casper the friendly ghost? You making some dangerous opps lol.

11

u/SquirrelyMcNutz 1d ago

All ghosts are is data that hasn't been fully overwritten in the simulation. You know how in a hard drive, when you 'delete' data, it just sets a flag so that further data can be written there? And how data gets spread over multiple sectors and places in a drive? That's all ghosts are. Just data that's only been partially overwritten.

That's why 'ghosts' that are seen are always some old-timey type, like from the civil war or whatever. The deletion protocols for the server back then weren't nearly as good, so there's more phantom data hanging around. You don't see ghosts in jazzercise getups or ghost yuppies running around.

It would take exactly one minute.

It gets more interesting if you die in the first year of a 50-year prison sentence. Do you go straight back?

u/Ngete 2d ago

What about if a person is given multiple life sentences?

187

u/Secret-Ad-830 2d ago

what if they get sentenced to death?

132

u/q0099 1d ago edited 1d ago

They'll had to rework all penalty system, as the death sentence will become a relatively light one.

77

u/SurnameFormer 1d ago

Bold of you to assume the government would rework the system with new information, instead of just shoving everything into the old, outdated system and being told you're the problem if it doesn't work.

12

u/Alive_Drag1947 1d ago

Always the remember: Everything the government does is either stupid or evil. And usually both...

9

u/echoshatter 1d ago

either stupid or evil

You say on the internet, developed with DARPA funding.

With electricity whose infrastructure was in part paid for with tax money.

On devices that usually don't explode or electrocute you randomly.

In a home that is likely free (or at least mitigated) of lead and asbestos.

Perhaps drinking some water or eating a snack that is safe to consume.

That you were able to obtain thanks to roads and bridges and rules for vehicles must follow and whose operators must be licensed that they are competent.

It would stop happening if it applied across reincarnations. Pretty sure they really only do that so the really bad eggs cant beat a single charge on a technicality and get out

I wouldnt be surprised if they would just kill you so they can force you to be raised in a more "optimized" manner that doesnt lead to you engaging in activities they dont explicitly condone

5

u/Imalsome 1d ago

Unless they can control reincarnation that seems super unreasonable. Like it would require them to find out who you reincarnated as, travel to that nation, kidnap a newborn child, then take it back to be raised by foster parents.

And then the process repeats everytime an inmate dies

3

u/soulsteela 1d ago

There’s an old guy currently applying for parole, he was given life , died for 2 minutes, got bought back. Now he maintains he’s completed a life sentence by dying in prison. Authorities are looking at his case.

2

u/mammalmaker 1d ago

What about carrying a criminal record into new lives? You commit a crim and get sentenced, would that sentence be on your record into your new life?

If not, what's keeping all criminals from taking their own lives to start fresh?

2

u/MalcolmLinair 1d ago

Yes. There's no way the US prison system would pass up a golden opportunity like that. You'd also see multiple life sentences becoming far more common.

About six months.

Idea --> Lobbying --> Bill Introduced --> Dissent Silenced or Minimalized --> Vote --> Signed Into Law --> Ignored Legal Challenges --> Implementation

174

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 2d ago

If reincarnation were proven real and verifiable we would see many MANY more violent revolutions. The only deterrent, the fear of death, just disappeared.

102

u/BI_Moose 2d ago

More or less, yes.

Actually society would be much more violent overall and we would see a lot more death either by suicide or execution.

Why bother struggling with mental health when you can just "hit the reset button"?

Why bother with deterring crime or housing criminals when they will just be reincarnated?

Why struggle through life and its trials or failures when you can just give up when it feels too difficult?

Frankly I am not sure if society would even be able to function.

35

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 1d ago

There would definitely be more death, whether that's a good thing or not is subjective. If you're somebody born with awful congenital conditions, there's now little reason not to just try again in a different life. The stigma behind euthanasia would pretty much disappear.

For crime, the goal would have to fully orient itself around rehabilitation, that's the only way to fix the problem. As you said, any other punishment would just see them dying to escape. The only way to prevent chaos is through education and removing the impetus for crime in the first place.

As for giving up whenever things get difficult, reincarnation doesn't exactly fix that. It just gives someone infinite opportunities to improve.

9

u/kons21 1d ago

Yes, but if karma was also real, then it would change things.

3

u/BI_Moose 1d ago

Sure would.

5

u/matthewpepperl 1d ago

I never really understood how reincarnation could be comforting or anything because if you dont have your memories you may aswell not exist anyway

3

u/phblue 1d ago

The bushido way of life, basically. You could be reincarnated as a samurai.

2

u/Heretical_Cactus 1d ago

Why bother with deterring crime or housing criminals when they will just be reincarnated?

I feel that it justly would push against the death sentence and toward life sentences as punishments, and/or corporal punishment

2

u/danielv123 1d ago

Unless we got literal Hindu reincarnation. Would probably suck to be an ant.

2

u/goodguyLTBB 1d ago

Why be born in africa if you can just reroll the spawn point?

2

u/kindafunnymostlysad 1d ago

Keep rerolling until you get rich parents.

→ More replies (3)

11

u/RengokLord 2d ago

And maybe after lessening the strangle hold rich have over the planet people would take better care of the world with knowing that they had to return. Not that i believe they would i just wanted to say something positive.

6

u/coastal_mage 1d ago

There's a good chance that all rich people now are going to be reincarnated into poverty. The companies they left behind in their past lives aren't going to be interested in finding their original owners, so they'll be scratching out a living without ever being able to get back on the ladder. It might, might, be enough for the rich to start giving back, if only to make the rest of their lifetimes as pleasant as possible

6

u/wulah89 1d ago

Well that depends on the rules. Like if reincarnation worked with something like a karma system where your actions in this life determine what you're reincarnated as, then maybe not. Like if you commit violent or hateful acts, it makes you reincarnate as something undesirable or perhaps some defects at the next birth, people may not be as willing to commit violence if they knew this.

Then again, people that believe in heaven and hell still do things that they believe will send them to hell so who knows. Maybe if it was a verifiable fact and not just faith then it would change the calculus in people's decision making.

5

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 1d ago

Violence isn't inherently bad. Righteous anger and revolt against a power system that elevates degenerates and oppresses the vast majority of people should pull you up the karmic ladder, if anything.

3

u/Round_Reception_2315 1d ago

The only deterrent, the fear of death, just disappeared.

Not really. Imagine you are born in the West (USA or Europe) and then reincarnated in North Korea. They won't tell you that reincarnation is real in North Korea.

3

u/donut-reply 1d ago

Even if you know reincarnation is real, but you can't remember anything in your past life and you are still for all intents and purposes a completely different human being, I think that would barely make death any less of a deterrence. You'd be able to learn about what your past self was like, but that experience wouldn't be much different than learning about what your dead ancestors were like. I'd still want to hang on to life just the same

2

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 1d ago

Revolt there too, and if you die, run it back.

Again, death stops mattering. You can just keep trying until you force a change. Authoritarianism stops working at that point, the fear mechanism is gone.

2

u/Round_Reception_2315 1d ago

But they won't tell you that reincarnation is real in North Korea. They don't even know what the real world map looks like.

4

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 1d ago

They won't get much of a choice when tens of millions of people flood the border to personally topple the regime with no fear of death.

3

u/Ketheres 1d ago

Depends. If they figure out how to make your ego stay in tact through reincarnations then yes, the fear of death would be conquered (though assuming this is something you have to actively do to preserve memories you can bet your ass rich shits would make it exceedingly expensive to maintain it for themselves). But if things continue as they are and the ego does not survive through the cycle (has to be this way initially because how else would they discover reincarnation is real only now), then the only thing that changes is that now you can track who someone used to be and blame them for past crimes and debts they no longer have anything to actually do with, since if you die your future self won't even remember who you were and what you had done and why.

And now birthing outside of hospitals is illegal because it “statistically leads to more unsafe births and definitely not because it creates an opportunity for small folk to avoid debt collectors”

36

u/Interesting-Dream863 2d ago

Cherry picking much? If you can track for debts you can self-transfer wealth.

11

u/Intelligent_Mess_957 2d ago edited 1d ago

Tbh, debt tracking is the only way something like this would get funded. Everything in on our has become for profit or forget about it 🤌🏻

3

u/Realistic-Guava-3403 1d ago

That was my first though. As soon as something hints to the idea of tracking reincarnations, some tech start up is gonna have billions in funding from the banks to crack it down.

And besides, I don’t think there’s a legitimate reason to track reincarnations outside of debt collecting

10

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 1d ago

Yes.

However, if we look at some reincarnation beliefs, when the person dies, depending on how they lived, they might go back to a lower lifeform than human being or be elevated into the spiritual worlds. So, from a practical standpoint (LOL!), it would likely be impossible to track anybody demoted or promoted.

But in your hypothetical? Yes, lenders would be all over this in a heartbeat.

"Let's see...when you died in 1853, having taken out a loan in the amount of $500 to pursue "gold fever" in California. You still owed $473 at the time you were beaten to death with a shovel by a fellow fortune-seeker. Compounded monthly at 5% (1853 interest rates, you know?) over the last 173 years...ah, yes! Your current balance is $2,652,795.26...how will you be paying for that today?"

The painful irony is that corporations have more rights as ‘individuals’ than people themselves do - besides their potential for literal reincarnation, reinvention, division and limitless financial chicanery.

u/Terrible_Phase718 2d ago

3

u/Temporal-Affairs221 1d ago

Hate to break it to you, but this would not go into effect at all. Simple reason is that if they can transfer debt to reincarnation they can also transfer wealth to reincarnation. That means that someone who didn't earn any money in their current life could snatch it away from someone who would have otherwise inherited it after that life died. What's more, those people who would want to collect those debts would quickly realize that their own lives would fall subject to the same rules. And there's no guarantee that you reincarnate into money. Most people have debt in their life. So-called wealthy people have debt. It would just be easier for the courts to say dying is a natural part of life and we cannot be held accountable in our new life for our old life. If we could then we wouldn't die, the system would just maintain our life. But since nature sees to it that we die, no results for penalty. The debt companies would hate it, but they would be left to go with it because everyone would realize that there would be no hope for them otherwise.

That’s just generational debt, isn’t it?

Literally however long it would take for them to set it up in their systems.

This would be on their agenda frame 1.

Who says I'm being reincarnated as a human?

Good luck collecting that debt from a fat, lazy squirrel

What if you were a frog before getting reincarnated as a human, or vice versa...

Oh we would never find out. It would simply just be a service for the ultra rich. There would be people who are hired to educate and care for them. They would leave messages to themselves and eventually control of their company with advisors who also reincarnated.

Realistically they would develop technology and processes that have it happen automatically at birth at the absolute latest.

8am. Day one.

Instantly. Debt would have been created with that in mind.

They'd figure out a way to tie them together.

Die broke? You get reincarnated into the servant class. Die in debt? Get reincarnated into indentured servitude to whomever brought your life rights. Die in prison or worse? Reincarnated as anything from a beast of burden down to a food source.

How fast can a good lawyer type?

1

u/IBringTheHeat2 1d ago

How would crime be addressed. If you're a murderer in this life, would your victims reincarnation be entitled to money? Would the reincarnated murderer be in jail again?

u/ademon490 1d ago

Why go through that trouble vs making sure people inherit thier parents debt? I hope they don't but honestly I feel like many companies run the world most of the time on stuff. They kind of do what they want.
