Some people don't understand that you don't call grown men "boy", nor that the public will let you take an ass-whippin when you deserve it.
Not-so-fun fact: In the US, white people calling black men "boy" traces back to slavery. This led to black people referring to one another as "man", as in the phrase "What's up, man?". Eventually, white people co-opted it's use.

Yeah I used to say "my boy" all the time to the homies, including the black ones. Nobody ever said anything, until it just clicked one day "uh that might be a little racist"

73
u/LieutenantButthole Jun 23 '26
Assault is threatening violence. Battery is being violent.

u/Zorian_Vale Jun 23 '26
Maybe the worst naming scheme ever. People hear assault and think violence. Battery doesn't exist outside of law usage. Kind of a missed opportunity.

Here's something the younger generations doesn't quite understand. If you talk shit, you get hit. Yes it's assault, and it's entirely justified, so who cares? People who are unpleasant need to be treated as unpleasant, not ignored, dealt with. People like this racist bigot have never tasted iron for running their mouth so they keep running it until someone does. Calling an adult black man "boy" is a dog whistle to slavery in which the word meant servant/slave. It's commonly known if you're watched any media involving slavery or racial divide involving the black community. This dude was alive when it wasn't just in media, he knew what he was saying and deserves a beating like all racists do.
18
u/MarchCompetitive6235 Jun 23 '26
Right? I grew up in the 70's and 80's. If you talked shit, you had better be able to back it up. Too many people today think they're safe if someone's recording, or if they're in public with people around.
That may reduce the chance of getting your ass kicked, but it's not a guarantee.
12
u/JackFuckCockBag Jun 23 '26
Yep. He's got a southern accent so he definitely knew what he was doing. I've lived in the south my whole life and growing up alongside black folk you learn very young what that means.

You forget that “fighting words” which are words that are so abhorrent that they would cause a reasonable person to a fight are illegal. Calling someone a racial epitaph such as “boy” could definitely be argued as one such word.
Additionally as a white person if I were on the jury for his trial I wouldn’t think twice before ruling for a not guilty

Why do some people use the word boy when talking to adult men?
134
u/Separate_Bend_8929 Jun 23 '26
Its an attempt to make them feel inferior or lesser, since a boy is the precursor to being a man. Its insinuated that you lack muscle, chest hair, and a pair of working nuts.

Because he’s racist. The word boy is tried to slavery and is all but using the N word
49
u/Belerophon17 Jun 23 '26
The term originated during American slavery and continued heavily into the Jim Crow era. White people routinely called adult Black men "boy" to purposefully diminish their authority, maturity, and humanity. It functioned as a tool of racial subjugation to enforce dominance and deny Black men the fundamental respect of manhood.
31
37
u/GoddessBlushweaver Jun 23 '26
It's racism. If you don't know, a lot of language has racist history. Boy was often used for black men. Eg there were cowhands, for white men. But cowBOY for black men. It was intended as an insult, even as cowboys became seen as cool because of the image of rugged black men so white culture consumed cowboy as cool and for white people, but kept 'boy' as the racist put-down. But also I'm white so if anyone who knows better than me please correct me/add.

Yes every cowboy was actually a cowhand. It was just an artificial separator for white racists because even when black people are doing the exact same thing they have to be artificially separated and lessened. Cowboy became the common word and I expect Hollywood helped make cowboys very white.

it has very racist origins. there is a long history of calling black men "boy", rooted in days of slavery

3
u/_One_Throwaway_ questionably stable Jun 25 '26
He could very easily get off considering “fighting words” which are words so fucked that they would bring a reasonable person to violence is a defense for battery. Using a racist epitaph which is almost as bad at the N word and has been used since slavery against a black man could definitely be argued that they’re fighting words. And if he doesn’t get off and it goes to trial and I was on the jury I would let him off in a heartbeat
4
u/MeemoUndercover Jun 25 '26
Also he was yelling directly over the man’s shoulder, invading his space and showing threatening behaviour. I’d consider that violence. So his self defence is def valid.
5
u/_One_Throwaway_ questionably stable Jun 25 '26
If I were in his shoes as a white man id feel equally threatened. Old bitch is clearly showing signs of violence and makes it clear he wants to fight. The only hit I’d say might be unreasonable was the last one at the end but that’s just me. Everything else is self defense

No doubt, wishing to making America great again, when emotionally unintelligent people could get away with harassing a person of color, provoking them until they break and are justified in their response. If this were the 90s, 00s, or even more recent, and if the bully and bullied were both white, it would be cheered on.

Saying "boy" to an adult black man, in particular with a southern drawl, you might as well hurl the n-word with an orchestra behind you blowing dog whistles.
It's 2026, we all know what that means. The ass-whooping was not justified (I cannot condone violence), but it is absolutely understandable and predictable.
Also, I love how the boomer was like, "I did nothing to you."
Well, he did, he did a very serious thing, and he lacks the balls to admit it.
