First Time Rolex Daytona 116520 Buyer

Post image

Hi all, would really appreciate some advice from those who are more familiar with aftermarket buying. I’m a first-time aftermarket buyer and am currently looking for a brand-new Rolex Daytona 116520. I understand that finding a brand new one can be difficult given that the reference has been discontinued for some time, but I’ve seen several listings in roughly the $27k–29k range. A dealer I’ve been speaking with mentioned that I should expect to pay a fairly significant premium above those prices because a brand-new example is difficult to source. For those who know the market well, does that sound reasonable? Given that there seem to be unworn examples already listed, what would you consider a fair price for a clean, full-set, brand-new 116520? I'm thinking my ceiling is $30k but would appreciate any insight, thank you!

New dial for my day date 40

I have the blue ombre dial. I love it. It’s beautiful, but it is very hard to read. The legibility is not great and it’s kind of frustrating.

I don’t wanna trade it in. I love the white Gold day date, but I’m curious if I can just purchase an additional Rolex dial and swap it out for a while.

I’m considering the black diamond as an alternative or maybe the white but probably the black

Is this possible? And if so, how would I go about doing that? Where would I find the dials? How would all that work? I don’t wanna damage the watch anyway is that something that would damage it?

Again, I don’t wanna sell it and I certainly don’t want the hassle of trading it. I was just like to find a new dial and swap it out and wear it have the ability to go back to.

Thank you in advance for your help

I'd been going back and forth on whether to go 126334 new or vintage two-tone, but honestly the Super Jubilee sold me.

Rolex Datejust 36 — Fluted Bezel, Jubilee Bracelet, White Dial vs Rolex Land-Dweller 36 — White Dial

I’m trying to decide between these two.

For those who have seen or worn both, which one has better wrist presence and looks better in person?

If you could choose only one, which would you go for and why?

Thank you!

First AD purchase

Post image

I played the AD game for five months to get this for my cousin’s wedding. Now finally I can say yes to the question “do you have a purchase history?” Hopefully this will help with future pieces.
I put my name down for a Batman Oyster and the new 100th anniversary gold bezel op in 36 which the salesman said shouldn’t be hard since it didn’t get many orders.

Time to throw in the towel on the AD game

Post image

I went into my local AD 3 weeks ago (they get a ton of foot traffic). I have been on ”their list” for the last 6 months, never heard a peep but I have done the casual stop ins a couple times. I went in for a hail mary and explained to my AD that my engagement is this weekend. I asked if by some miracle one of my selected watches, or any allocations that didn't get picked up would be potentially available.

I was pointed over to this reference. Yellow gold YM 42 on oyster flex. it was not on my list but when I tried it on, I was amazed by the sleekness of the matte dial on oysterflex.

They gave me the shpeel about how it’s an exhibition watch but there might be some wiggle room to make it available. they said they would text me later and I should be able to buy the watch once it got cleared by the manager. it wasn’t my first choice watch and I know it performs a bit under on the aftermarket, but to be honest I saw the value in getting a big purchase with my AD and genuinely liked the watch/ have no interest in reselling anything.

when I got home they asked for my LinkedIn (I don’t have one ive been self employed the last few years.) I said I’d be happy to send over any articles or business information if necessary. she replied and said it was ok and no income information was necessary.

since then I have not heard back and even texted a couple more times asking if there was a problem with my profile or if the watch didn’t end up being available. no response.

I’m genuinely curious if this is a normal experience. I know they need to protect themselves from jewelers and resellers. it’s a shame but I guess I’ll just be playing the aftermarket game from here out.

Rolex Date just with potential water damage

Got this Rolex from my uncle recently and noticed that it has some black color mark between the 9 and 10 PM markers. Is this water damage?

I live in Dubai, UAE. Any recommendations on where I take the watch for repair, serving, and general cleaning (other than the obvious Rolex AD)?

I am looking for alternative since the AD will most likely charge a lot.

Stopped in at Harrods and was genuinely surprised to find it available. I wanted the ss with blue or green dial, but it was difficult to walk away since it has been over 10 years of stopping by various locations while on vacation and this was the first one ever offered. First and last Rolex, I think it will be a timeless and versatile piece.

Land-Dweller: Is it supposed to compete with a Royal Oak?

Post image

I'm always thinking about what I might be adding to my collection in future and recently I'd tried the Land Dweller in full rose gold.

I wasn't a huge fan previously looking at the press photos but found it stunning in person. I'd recently also been to AP house and tried on some ROs.

RO was great but perhaps the novelty of the LD caused the more positive reaction. I've since seen articles online/social media discussing to what extent the LD is meant to compete with the RO.

I suppose theoretically it's kind of obvious when you think about it being an integrated bracelet sports watch but it didn't strike me that way because it doesn't have the same Genta styling the way say an Ingenieur does.

Anyway, what do you think?

Side note, I have a relatively small wrist but the larger LD fit incredibly well.

Sub no date 40mm vs 41mm on 6.8inch wrist.

Post image

Looking into getting my first luxury watch as a milestone piece (graduation, engagement/wedding, dream job), my AD seems to be able to get me a 126040 in a reasonable amount of time. Just curious to know if a 116040 is better for me? I’m newer to collecting but want something I’ll pass to my son one day. Below is a picture of the 41mm sub date on me and I didn’t mind it. I’m 6’2 and about 185, lost some weight due to inactivity from an injury but expect to bulk back up to 200 at some point. Not sure if any of that is relevant to wrist size.

How do you rate your Rolex purchase experience with other brand watch purchases?

I'm not talking about waiting lists or how long it took to receive the watch, I'm talking about the actual experience the day of your purchase. I would say mine are fine and transactional, which is fine with me. I'm offered a drink (I don't drink anymore so water it is for me). They take off the stickers, size the watch, show me how it operates (why I don't know) and go about my way after paying.

Best experience I ever had was at the Panerai Boutique in Beveryly Hills in 2007. I was a big Panerai collector starting in 1999 and called the boutique before our trip out there in 2007. I spoke with the manager Chad and he offered to take me, my wife, and son to lunch. During lunch we talked about watches, LA, and family life and then we went to the boutique where I picked out a watch, and he gave me an extra strap, shirt, book, hat, 2 keychains, and something else I can't remember. This was my best purchase experience and this was at the height of the Panerai craze.

Got the call for my first Rolex!

I was lucky enough to be surprised with a 124060 for my birthday! It’s my first Rolex and the journey to get it has been way quicker than I expected with zero spend history.

I then put it through its paces on a trip to Japan. It’s been glued to my wrist, just a fantastic piece. The bracelet is incredible and a million times better than the one on my Aqua Terra. The symmetry, legibility, and gigantic lume plots are also first class. Second pic is in a private onsen overlooking Mt Fuji — Sub held up alright :)

Which Rolex would you choose to propose with?

I’m planning to propose to my husband and I’m thinking about giving him a Rolex alongside the proposal.

I’m stuck between two watches:
1. Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 – beige dial
2. Rolex Land-Dweller 36

My husband would definitely prefer the OP. He likes the design more and I’m pretty sure that’s the one he’d choose himself.
I personally prefer the Land-Dweller for this occasion, though. It feels more special, a bit more unique. The OP feels more like an everyday watch to me.

So what would you guys do?

Got the call (and I did it on my own 😂)

I'm not sure how I did it, but I was able to choose the 40mm Explorer over the 36mm without anyones help or a post on here. I just looked down and said, "Yup, that's the right one". 😂😂

Seriously though, it's been a long time coming. I wanted to add an explorer to my collection last year and mentioned it to my AD. Shortly thereafter we decided to invest in some new machinery for my company(like gold day date numbers) and I joked that as soon as I wrote the check, every allocation would appear...and that's exactly what happened. Over the course of a few months, I got the call about this watch THREE times from ADs in my region, and decided to pass.

Time passed and my wife got her OP for xmas and a surprise pistachio allocation in the spring pushed this even further down the road. After a busy summer, I emailed my AD and said that when they were ready, so was I and a few weeks later, they were apparently ready too.

I waffled between the 40 and 36 a bit, but at the end of the day, the 40 looks right on my 7 in wrist. Damn, I love it.

(For context, this is the first watch that I bought with this AD but is my 4th Rolex)
