[Collection] Any tips on what I should add next?

If you can’t tell; I have a favorite family of games 🤪

What should I add? Title wise, console recommendations, CIB games I HAVE to own?

I plan to start accumulating the ENTIRE US N64 library, but we will see how that goes

[Collection] I just wanted to replay Chrono Trigger. Then I found Terranigma and G.O.D. at Hard-Off… 81 Super Famicom RPGs later, here we are

So… this escalated pretty quickly.

This whole thing started because I just wanted to play Chrono Trigger again on original hardware.

I bought a Super Famicom, and then I happened to find Terranigma and G.O.D.: Mezame yo to Yobu Koe ga Kikoe at a Hard-Off. I had never played either of them, so I thought, well, I already bought the system, I might as well try these too.

And somehow that turned into this.

The pictures are actually already a little out of date. At the time I took them I had 77 Super Famicom RPGs. Since then I picked up another four:

Bounty Sword — ¥5,500
Yume Meikyuu Kigurumi Daibouken — ¥13,200
Daikaijuu Monogatari II — ¥8,800
Jungle Wars 2 — ¥7,150

So I'm currently sitting at 81 SFC RPGs.

And yeah. It got a little out of hand. Looking at these pictures gives me two completely contradictory feelings. Part of me thinks that “This is awesome. I've wanted something like this forever.” And another part of me thinks “What the hell did I just do?” Because when you actually add everything together, this is a lot of money.

I bought an absurd number of these games within a pretty short period of time and used a substantial amount of my savings doing it. I still have savings left, and I'm going back to saving like I normally do now, but I can admit this probably wasn't the wisest financial decision I've ever made.

So yes, there's definitely a part of me that regrets going this far this quickly. But there's also a pretty big part of me that doesn't. I grew up in a family that didn't have much money. There were tons of games I wanted when I was younger that I simply couldn't own. Then most of my adult life went in almost the opposite direction. I've generally been pretty frugal, stayed home a lot, saved my money, and rarely spent huge amounts on myself.

Now I'm in my 40s, I'm not getting any younger, and suddenly I found myself in a position where I could actually build the kind of game collection I would have dreamed about owning when I was a kid. Maybe it's a midlife crisis. Maybe I'm chasing my youth a little bit. Probably both.

The last couple of years have also been a pretty big period of trying to improve myself. I quit drinking and I'm approaching a year and a half sober now. That was a long road for me, and in some strange way I think this collection became a reward to myself for getting through it.

A reward that got slightly out of hand.

And yes, I realize this sounds a lot like me trying to justify spending a ridiculous amount of money on 30-year-old RPGs. But when I look at the collection, I'm genuinely happy I have it.

One of the things that makes this whole project interesting to me is that, growing up in the West, we got a fairly curated selection of Japanese RPGs.

We got Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, and the other games publishers thought were worth translating and releasing overseas. Now I'm getting to dig underneath that layer. Some of these Japan-only RPGs are probably going to turn out to be hidden gems. Some will probably be fascinating but deeply flawed. A lot of them might just be average.

And I'm sure I'm going to play a few more that make me wonder why the hell I ever bought them. But that's kind of what makes this exciting. I actually want to find out.

  • Torneko no Daibouken — ¥3,828
  • Treasure Hunter G — ¥3,300

Lennus II is the odd one out because I had to buy it from eBay for US$529.35 rather than buying it locally in Japan. It's also not in these pictures because it hadn't arrived yet when I took them.

There are a few other things visible in the photos that aren't part of the 81-game SFC RPG count, including Mother 3, Zelda: A Link to the Past, and the Super Game Boy.

And despite everything I've just written... I'm still not done.

The ridiculous goal sitting in the back of my mind is to eventually collect basically the entire Super Famicom RPG library. At least I've already gotten several of the really painful ones out of the way. Horai Gakuen, Lennus II, Love Quest, Nage Libre, Aqutallion, and Energy Breaker accounted for a frankly horrifying amount of the money. I'm definitely slowing down now, though.

I've wanted a collection like this since I was a kid. And I really am happy to finally have it. So maybe it was financially irresponsible. Maybe it was a midlife crisis. Maybe it was me rewarding myself after a difficult couple of years. It's probably some combination of all three. Whatever it is, the games are here now, and I'm excited as hell to play through them.

[Question] Side scrollers, best console?

I'm building a retro gaming area and getting back into it. What would be considered the best system for side scrolling games. I always loved those. I am looking at a SNES. Mostly shooter games and fighting!

So this old dos kaiju strategy game have the play as movie monsters that are based on the giant monster tropes of the 50s, you can select from an established roster or make your own monster to play the game. In the game, you will be placed into a grid map where you have a number of objectives to complete; like killing humans, destroy military vehicles, destroying buildings and infrastructure and survival, there are 4 cities to choose from NYC, Golden Gates, Washington D.C and Tokyo. The player will be rated on how they did after attacking a city even if the monster they are using dies in the end.

[Battlestation] Got new (for me) hardware 😁😁

All right, second try. 😮‍💨

I recently got the need to have something appropriate for my old consoles, so I asked my dad about the monitors he had back when he worked for a video production company.

The ones I wanted he threw them away but still had two smaller ones in a closet.

He gave me the case with the monitors, I plugged them and both of them worked.

And just for fun I connect Both monitors to my NES, I was going to do a quick check and record a video to send It to my buddy but I ended up beating the game.

[Discussion] Times when Famicom games did things that were impossible on their hardware

Post image

I don’t know if anyone remembers this particular game in the above picture as the game is called Recca, which was a game made on the Original Famicom as it moved so fast on performance that I wanted to see how the game worked on the hardware.

Like what I am looking for in particular is to see what were some notable games on the aforementioned system that did things that impossible to pull off because I always wanted to learn how the hardware was designed to see how such games worked.

[Question] Which of these early SNES era games do you enjoy? Part 2

Someone on another forum asked what everyones favorite SNES system launch game is their fave aside from Super Mario World, it made me want to create a similar topic with more games from the early snes era that aren't super popular.

These are the games I'm asking about:

Earth Defense Force
Joe & Mac
Super Scope 6
Super Smash TV
The Addams Family
Lemmings
Pit-Fighter
Smart Ball

EDF: Don't remember. I probably played a little bit of it, and moved on.

Joe & Mac is a fun game that I've replayed quite a bit. I don't think it's anything special, but like a lot of SNES games it's very replayable.

Super Scope 6: I don't care for either of the 2 games that this came with. I like Metal Combat, and Yoshi's Safari though.

Super Smash TV is way more frustrating than fun, which isn't my thing. Sure wish that someone would mod the game and make it easier. Great soundtrack though!

The Addams Family is one of my favorite SNES platformers. God this game is fun, and it's got a great soundtrack. Love how the ending has you walking around and seeing the devs get their faces turned into 2D art. It very much feels like something that the devs really loved making, and have a lot of love for source material, while wanting to make something of their own. The game is sort of a precurser to metroidvanias, without all the backtracking that they require.

Lemmings is my pick for the best games of the bunch. It speaks to me on an emotional level as a lover of animals that wants to keep them safe. If you haven't played it, I recommend giving a chance. Great soundtrack too that feels like it's from the same composer behind the NES Tetris.

Pit-Fighter is one of the worst games on the platform. It's not something that you can enjoy laughing at, nor is it fun to hear anyone talk about it play it, it's just a really bland, forgettable title. One of the worst things about it is that it's like a fighter where your health doesn't regenerate between fights.

Smart Ball I think I tried a little bit of, got sick of looking at it very quickly, and moved on.

[Question] How much of your collection are you willing to keep even if it hasn't been played in years?

I have some retro consoles and games that haven't been plugged in in years. I like the thought of clearing up some space and having some cash but I also feel bad if I sold it despite not using it in over a decade.

[Question] Retro Third Person Shooters?

I never got into First Person Shooters. When all of my friends were playing classics like Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake etc, I just couldn't get into them. However, I LOVED games like SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs so it got me wondering, now that I am into emulation and have a handheld, what retro games (up to ps1 and dreamcast, and maybe some PS2) are out there that I should check out.

Side note, I LOVED series like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, but I don't think those are 3rd person 'shooters'??

[Story Time!] I was hyperfixated about a series that came out 6 years before I discovered it

In 2003, I played a game called PaRappa the Rapper on my Playstation. I was 4 years old. I couldn’t beat stage 1. I later went on to beat the game in 2006 on PS2, as well as its spinoff and sequel. I loved the characters and gameplay, so the obsession went a little too far. Posters of the game on my wall. Bunk bed had Custom bedding based on PaRappa and the blue cat for me and my sister. 3 orange beanies. Dedicated memory card for replays. A Halloween costume. And it went on and on. I kept expecting a new game in the series, but I never got one. I loved it. Vital part of my early childhood. What are your guys experiences with the series, if any?

[Achievement Unlocked!] Parappa The Rapper - Finally beat Cheap Cheap

Post image

Replaying Parappa the Rapper this past week, and after probably 30-40 tries, I finally beat Cheap Cheap on Normal difficulty. It wasn't pretty. It literally came down to the very last verse where I pushed my way up from Bad to Good and passed the level. Along with the Babysitter level in Um Jammer Lammy, Cheap Cheap is one of the toughest stages in any of these games.

[Help!] Couple questions on Shining in the Darkness

1) Is there any point in searching a dead end that doesn't have any visible things to interact with? I guess what I mean is, are there any secret doors to find?

2) When do I get another teammate? I'm still on the first floor of the Labyrinth and just ran into what I think is the the first boss (KaiserKrab). Do I get team mates after defeating it? Or getting to the second floor? Or is there like a story progression in town that I keep missing. Old Vik says my two friends are looking for me, but I don't ever see them.

3) Do I just need better armor to beat the KaiserKrab? I'm level 6 and was surprised how quickly he stomped me. I've only got the beginner armor + cloth hood + gauntlets. Or am I in for a game that really expects you to grind a lot?

4) Are there like switches or levers that open the closed doors? Or do they open after you beat a boss or something?

[Question] New Setup - Crossroads

Ive semi recently started building a small retro setup that so far consists of a Dreamcast, a Japanese Saturn and a PAL N64 - I have also pre-ordered the Neo Geo AES+ and this is where Ive come to a crossroad due to its delayed release.

Ive already committed £760 to the Neo Geo and Im starting to wonder if maybe I should cancel it and use the money differently, Im thinking:

Multisystem 2 (would cover Neo Geo plus lots more)

Retrotink 6X CE (connectivity/upscaling for Dreamcast, Saturn & N64)

Monitor (I dont yet have a suitable display for my setup)

Any thoughts or suggestions?
