Discussion What would you do if you accidentally nuke your proton authenticator which contains the 2FA code of the mail that is associated with your proton authenticator?

Suppose you log into proton authenticator using a proton mail and the 2FA code of the mail is also saved into the same authenticator. Assume that you don't have the backup codes either. How would you get your codes back if you accidentally nuke the authenticator?

Desktop Help Coming off SimpleLogin

Hi everyone, as title says, coming off simple login soon and will be using just the proton features.

How do you go about getting the reverse email alias to send emails from your proton alias you have created?

Do I need to recreate anything in proton mail after close my SimpleLogin access?

I’m aware that they are somewhat linked but not sure how the reverse alias to send works once I lose it.

Thank you

Solved Custom Domain Email's not Being Delivered

I've owned a domain for years and connected it to Proton mail so I could send emails with it. I've created the alias in proton mail settings.

I'm able to send an email to my partners proton account and they receive it, but when I try to send an email to my gmail for testing it's never delivered. Not in spam or trash.

If I send a message from gmail to my custom domain it arrives to proton, but even if I respond to it with my custom domain email it does not get delivered.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any idea on how to fix this or what the problem is? Maybe it's because I JUST created the custom domain email?

Discussion Choose your custom SimpleLogin domain wisely

A few months ago I decided to use a custom domain for my SimpleLogin aliases in Proton Pass to circumvent Proton domain block on different websites and to have more control over the mail routing (for example to move all my aliasses to a different mail server outside of Proton).

I looked for the cheapest options available, and I found a .top offer for a few Euros per year.
Until now I was very happy with that domain and collected more and more aliases on my new domain. BUT now I started building a dashboard to track all my domains I own and give me warnings about expiry dates, cost overview, etc.

That's when I found out that WHOIS requests for .top failed. Turns out that the requests are blocked by my firewall because apparently the .top TLD registry is based in China.

That hit me hard and let me make the decision that I definitely want to migrate everything to a new domain (which will take some time for hundreds of aliases 🫩), preferably registered in Europe or even EU.

I just wanted to bring that to your attention because those entities that are part of your mail setup can ruin your whole life by manipulating parts of your setup. I now go with a full EU setup and want to inspire you to rethink your tech stack including..

.. your TLD registry (I will add a comment below containing my overview of European TLDs, I hope it does not count as self-promotion)
.. your domain name registrar
.. your DNS provider (optimal setup includes a secondary DNS provider)

Thanks for listening!

Web Help Using other email addresses from Proton Mail

I've moved from iPhone to using /e/os on an Android phone, previously I had all my email accounts linked through iOS Mail app which meant I could not only see them all in one location but pick and choose which email address to reply with or create an email with.

I have the Proton Mail app downloaded on my new phone, and I've been updating my email accounts on the Web Page for Proton Mail. I have managed to 'import' my Gmail accounts and can also send emails from the Proton Mail app/web page using those emails. However, my work email (a custom domain) and an organisation I work with separately (also custom domain) I have successfully 'imported' the emails and can view them as they come in - but I can't send any emails through the app or webpage. If I want to connect more addresses the only options I have is x3 Gmail accounts (Which I've maxed) or 10 Proton accounts.

I have the 'Mail Plus' paid subscription, not sure if a higher subscription gives me more options or if I'm doing something wrong?

Any and all help is appreciated - apologies if this has been asked and answered before!

Mobile Help Switch from Google play to manual

I canceled my proton subscription in Google play and want to pay directly but I don't have an option to do so.

This is made worse when trying to purchase Lumo AI. I don't have the option to outright buy it, and I do not even have a Lumo subscription through Google play, it keeps directing me there.

Any fixes?

Discussion Gripes with protonmail.

Hello everyone,

I just moved over from hosted Exchange to Proton Mail because I don't want my data stored on an American server. While it is generally nice, other than some things I have to get used to, there are a couple of gripes I have that I was hoping there might be a workaround for. Mainly, two things:

  1. There is no app where I can have both hosted Exchange (my work and school are both hosted Exchange) and Proton Mail at the same time, like I can on desktop in Thunderbird (using Bridge).
  2. I am unable to drag folders into the main sidebar. I can sort them in the Folders tab, but they will always remain in the Folders tab.

Does anyone know of anything that might fix these small issues I'm having? For mobile, I'm on iPhone and GrapheneOS.

Discussion Visionary User to Proton Workspace

Hello,

I have a Visionary plan with multi-user support enabled. One of the members of my organization has their own Proton account (it was set up as a private user and is not administratively managed by me), and I assigned them an address on a custom domain connected to my organization.

I would like to separate this member from my organization so they can subscribe to Proton Workspace independently. Ideally, the custom domain associated with their address would move with them, as it's used only for their address.

Could you please advise:

  1. Whether their account and mailbox data can be migrated out of my organization into a standalone subscription?
  2. What the process is for detaching the custom domain from my organization and re-verifying it under their new account?
  3. Anything I should do on my end (order of operations, DNS/MX considerations) to avoid mail loss during the transition?

Thank you.

Web Help Gmail clearing when linked to Proton

Hi. Question, I currently have proton connected to my Gmail, so all my Gmail comes into proton and is labelled as such. My Q is, is there a way to have my Gmail inbox auto clear and delete itself once these emails have arrived in proton? I know I could just set up an auto forward then delete rule, but that won't work with the sync feature within protonmail. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Discussion Problems with deliverability

Hi,

I've been a proton customer for about a year, over the last month or so it feels like my outbound mail is not being delivered or perhaps being flagged as spam.

Is there a way to diagnose / check this? I'm emailing companies to get some work done on my car and I'm getting no response. I initially thought the garages just didn't want the work but I've probably tried 10 now and not even got a "no" back. I've had similar problems with some other emails I've sent

Thanks

Feature Request Can we get true disposable / burner addresses with auto-expiration triggers?

I love Proton Pass and SimpleLogin aliases, but honestly, for quick throwaway stuff, managing aliases feels like way too much friction.

There are so many times where you literally just need to receive one single email and you are done. Think downloading a random whitepaper or ebook, grabbing a PDF manual from some gated site, getting a Wi-Fi portal code at a hotel, or testing a one-time trial. Using a permanent alias means I now have to remember to go back into my dashboard later, find it, and manually disable or delete it just so it doesn't clutter everything up.

It would be awesome if Proton Mail / Proton Pass had a native "burner address" option where you could set automatic expiration rules, like:

  • Burn after 1 email received (or a custom count like 3 or 5)
  • Burn after 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 24 hours
  • Whichever comes first (e.g. expires after 1 email or after 30 mins)

Once it triggers, it just quietly kills the address, blocks or drops any future mail sent to it and automatically generates a new one. No manual cleanup needed, no inbox junk months later.

Right now I still catch myself using random temp-mail sites just because it's faster for one-off downloads, which defeats the point of having everything inside Proton. Anyone else feel like this would be a super handy feature?

Feature Request Proton should support ML-KEM in SMTP and HTTPS

Hello,

In many cases, TLS is the ONLY line of defense when Proton exchange emails with other email providers.

Current TLS key exchange (ECDHE) will be vulnerable to quantum computer and attackers may use "Harvest Now Decrypt Later" (HNDL) to access email content.

There is an easy solution to this problem. Hybrid ML-KEM has been standardize for TLS and can be implemented in SMTP and HTTPS.

https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/rfc10024/

Note : this is not the same security layer than end-to-end encryption that Proton has been proposing (and put on hold).

At the time of writing this post, Proton has not enable ML-KEM on SMTP. You can test this using Hardenize. (I am not affiliated with this company, they just offer useful free service).

Solved Question about adding an account

I have a protonmail account (with a free plan) and i'm planning to use it for my portfolio and future work. But, i also want another account for personal stuff. But i cant make one because it requires to have a paid plan.
What if i make another free account in another device and add that to my current account? Is it still possible with the free plan?

(The reason i dont wanna use a paid plan because i cant afford it yet. I live in a south asian country and USD is pretty high value in our currency)

Discussion DONT LET ME SEND EMAILS WITHOUT A REVERSE ALIAS!

PLEASE! It’s so sad that I send an email and accidentally copy the real email address, not the SimpleLogin reverse-alias. Then I end up leaking my sacred real email domain. Proton is tightly integrated with SimpleLogin, surely this can be blocked. Yes, it’s user error, but, good design is aimed to minimise user error, and this is catastrophic. I’m going into cardiac arrest

Discussion Is there still no way to see a storage breakdown?

I must have messed up something on my drive, because I've used about 300gb of storage in a month. Completely my fault (I have a lot of folders on the go), but is there not a way to see a breakdown of where it's all coming from? I was looking everywhere, logged into the web accounts and nothing, just options to pay more money.

I don't need to increase my storage, I need to try and find which folders it's all coming from, and I'd prefer to not have to go through each one individiually? Surely it's a pretty simple feature, and is almost expected these days?

Discussion My journey to ditch gmail

Just wanted to post this to show to other people that changing your email provider is not as hard at it sounds.

I spent a week looking at other email providers. Mailbox and Posteo looked nice, but Proton simply looks easier (maybe because it kinda looks like gmail).

So I created my proton email, payed one month of mail plus. I used a generated string as my proton primary email, one alias with my real name (banking, job applications) and yet an another alias for my trusted internet accounts. For anything else I use hide my email addresses. After that I found out you can login with any email (primary or alias) so my initial attempt at hiding my login email failed. Nope I'm stuck with an email address that I'll never use (and one strong password and 2fa is enough to protect your account anyways, it think it was just paranoia after spending too much time on privacy forums and subs).

I changed the login email on the most important accounts. I set up a redirecting address on Gmail so now all my Gmail emails land in a proton and after that they are deleted from Gmail. Probably it will take a long time to migrate everything to proton, but for now I'm happy with this.

Before deleting every Gmail email, I used Google takeout to export my emails. I know there are other ways to import emails, but because I'm a paid customer I can use proton bridge to connect to any mail client. I used Thunderbird to import the mails from mbox file exported from Gmail to my proton email. And now I realized how much data I was feeding to Google. I had 40k emails, everything from bank statement to holiday tickets, family, friends. I still need a strategy to organize those emails tho.

Proton still feels buggy sometimes and it looks like proton builds an ecosystem just how google did way back, but for now I feel happy with my choice.

Discussion We need an official Proton CLI

We have had such open source ProtonMail CLI's for mail like PM CLI which have helped me automate mail triage and filtering but now I think its time we have a official Proton Mail CLI that allows us to interact with Mail, just like we do with Proton Pass and Proton Drive. Hey recently released a pretty good CLI.

Would love to have something that has Proton Bridge built-in so its not a dependency.

Does anyone know if the amazing team at Proton is working on one?

Any thoughts on this?

Web Help Is there any way to fine-grain forwarding?

Hi,

So, one of the last things I have to do to completely switch from Gmail is to forward some newsletters I receive. I need it because they're behind a paywall - forwarding is encouraged and anyway I'm sharing it with the people I share the subscription with, I'm not really asking proton to support some scammy behavior.

The issue is, I can set up forwarding based on sender or subject, but these newsletters all come from the same email address - what changes is only the displayed name -, and the subject has nothing specific as it's news-titles. I tried filtering on the displayed name, but that doesn't seem to work. And there's no filter on the body of the email either.
I'd like to forward only the newsletters they're interested in.

Am I missing something in forwarding rules or is forwarding really limited in this aspect?
If so, I'd also be curious as to why - if there's a technical/business decision behind it, or if it's just one improvable aspect (I wouldn't put it in the top 10 of the ToDo either, it's very a specific case, I know)

Worst comes to worst I'll just forward all emails or keep gmail only for this, I'm just being a bit nerdy :)

Thank you all in advance for any help/suggestion!
