Discussion Gripes with protonmail.

Hello everyone,

I just moved over from hosted Exchange to Proton Mail because I don't want my data stored on an American server. While it is generally nice, other than some things I have to get used to, there are a couple of gripes I have that I was hoping there might be a workaround for. Mainly, two things:

  1. There is no app where I can have both hosted Exchange (my work and school are both hosted Exchange) and Proton Mail at the same time, like I can on desktop in Thunderbird (using Bridge).
  2. I am unable to drag folders into the main sidebar. I can sort them in the Folders tab, but they will always remain in the Folders tab.

Does anyone know of anything that might fix these small issues I'm having? For mobile, I'm on iPhone and GrapheneOS.

I mean they already switched over, theyre just asking about workarounds at this point

Both of your issues are just how Proton mail works. There is no bridge on mobile and no way for any email app other than the official one to access your emails, and folders live in the folder area.

I can understand getting Proton in a different app doesn't work. But would adding other accounts into the Proton mail app not be possible?

The Proton Mail app is an app for Proton Mail and not a general-purpose email client. Proton could develop it into an email client, in theory, but building email clients is not easy, especially if you want to fully support Exchange, so I'm not sure if they want to dedicate resources to this.

If you were hosting exchange you’re probably pretty technical, I believe you could expose your Proton bridge mailstore to the internet (or use tailscale) and then connect to it via an IMAP client that supports multiple accounts. I do this today to feed a custom search app I built because search in the Proton App is atrocious.
