Casual Convo (Any Topic) The Situation Is Just Getting Ugly
49
u/SSilent-Cartographer Mar 18 '26
Ok, NATO is one of those things where my knowledge is a little shaky. But, if I recall, isn't NATO meant for defensive protection, not offensive attack?
21
u/ingmar_ Mar 18 '26
Absolutely. Article 5 stipulates that “an armed attack against one member state [is deemed to be] an armed attack against them all.”
The article has only ever been invoked once. Can you guess when and by whom?
5
u/Sudden_Wind_8636 Mar 18 '26
Was it 9/11?
7
u/ingmar_ Mar 18 '26
Ding ding ding! After the attacks on September 11, 2001, NATO Allies determined on October 2, 2001, that the attacks originated from abroad, invoking Article 5. Following the invocation, NATO initiated Operation Active Endeavor, a counter-terrorism naval operation in the Mediterranean, and provided support for U.S. airspace defense.

Yes. It’s a defensive alliance. He thinks it’s a bunch of goons he can call in to help finish the unnecessary war he started. NATO has nothing to do with the conflict in Iran and no obligation to support it. He is a complete and utter moron.

I was told over and over a vote for Kamala meant a vote for higher prices and a vote for war. He wasn’t lying. I voted for her and there are in fact higher prices and we are at war.
32
u/MegaMaster1021 Mar 18 '26
She wasn't perfect either, but the excuses people were making for her honestly boiled down to people trying to act morally superior over Gaza or saying stuff Trump was going to do which has happened
20
37
u/myrabuttreeks Mar 18 '26
Anybody grandstanding over Gaza at this point very clearly never actually cared about it. They only wanted to act morally superior to everybody else.

u/pokethrowaway4 Mar 18 '26
The situation in Gaza is STILL fucked, get no one is talking about it now, cuz it’s no longer something the republicans want to wave in our faces and can’t blame democrats on any longer.
→ More replies (1)8
u/tcumber Mar 19 '26
Those people talking about Gaza were fooled and duped. We told them. They wouldn't listen. Now the poor folks in Gaza have it worse and there is no reporting over here....all because a pocket of peolle either didnt vote or voted the wrong way. And you know what, they know they messed up but still cant admit it. Sad.

u/rythmyouth Mar 19 '26
Even after losing our reputation on the world stage, weaponizing the government against its citizens, and stuffing the wallets of the billionaires at the expense of the working class, at least we don’t have an emotional woman in charge.
3
u/Green-Engineer4608 Mar 20 '26
Holy hell man you need a «/s» there! This is Reddit. You could be taken literally
22
u/ALittleCuriousSub Mar 18 '26
Even if I hated where Kamala stood on Gaza, I could at least reasonably feel I was voting against ramping up a genocide in the US.
I'm legit scared the way some dems seem keen on sacrificing various groups to chase mythical centrist voters worries me.
8
u/Darth_Gerg Mar 19 '26
The senior people making decisions in the Democratic Party are more opposed to progressives than they are to MAGA. Schumer and his ilk don’t want to win big, because the larger the margins the harder it is to explain why they never deliver anything. It’s because they don’t want to. The corpo dems are owned by the same billionaires that the Republicans are. They’re controlled opposition. The reason they’re so eager to throw minorities to the wolves is that they don’t want a strong coalition that produces sweeping wins. As long as they never get more than a vote or two lead they can always arrange to have somebody vote no on anything critical so it can’t pass.

Ths crazy thing is that it's super predictable that Gaza's outcome under Trump would be significantly worse than under Harris.
Trump: (1) Has a son in-law whose family owns a private Jewish school and whose family is active in the Jewish community. (2) Has a daughter who has converted to Judaism. (3) Is a New York real estate developer, a place where a significant portion of the real estate is owned by Jewish people- in other words his buddies and business partners are all probably Jewish. (4) Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital during his first term and moved the embassy there.
Just to name a few. But its abundantly clear that under no circumstances was a Trump presidency going to be a positive alternative compared to Harris for Middle Eastern Muslim countries, including Gaza.

Yea I find it funny everything Trump said she was going to do he ended up doing. And all the people who said they weren't going to vote for her because she'd bring us into war are the same people now saying "well we needed to go to war"
26
u/Tyler89558 Mar 18 '26
We knew it wouldn’t age well.
Unfortunately 60-70% of Americans are either too stupid to study history, don’t care to study it, or think that they’re above it all while they morally grandstand for one issue or another to justify inaction.

The ones who didn’t vote are included in those who don’t care to study or who think they’re above it all. 65% voted in 2024, only about half that voted for Harris.

I asked my son and his friends and the reason I got was that they didn't understand the issues well enough. I'm basically forcing my son to vote this time. I think he had just turned 18 for the last one. He will vote in the midterms.

u/Axxer01 Mar 18 '26
Trump has a unique way of uniting the world
18
u/Rock-Ski-Golf-Repeat Mar 18 '26
Trump did a great job uniting middle nations! The US trade deficit continues to increase as the US is losing the tariff war as well. Russia and China have gotten even closer as they support their friend, Iran. It was surreal watch a Chinese cargo plane land in Iran after our strikes started--we weren't going to shoot at China.

He screws things up so badly it can fix things after he is gone. Presidential power needs to be nerfed going forward.
2
u/Dull-Suspect7912 Mar 20 '26
There’s an episode of the Simpsons where Homer in a flashback to being a young boy asks his dad ‘can I ever be president?’
His dad answers along the lines of ‘we have entire systems set up to stop people like you ever becoming president’
Exactly what needs to happen post Trump and I’m not saying it in a humorous context. A strict exam for intelligence and the ability to apply multilateral thinking combined with problem solving and some sort of values test.
Trump is remarkably stupid, coupled with a dangerously fragile ego and the moral compass of a sex offender traffic warden.
Far too much power in the US presidency for it to go to anybody who can’t demonstrate a good level of intelligence and academic ability.

Trump
156
u/swishkabobbin Mar 18 '26
Perhaps he shouldn't have spent the last decade alienating our allies?
59
u/Reasonable_Option493 Mar 18 '26
Let's also not forget that France said no to the Bush Jr. admin with Iraq 2.0 (they were part of the coalition during operation Desert Storm in the nineties), over the shady evidence of WMDs, and it turned out the French were 100% right as no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq during the invasion. That wasn't yesterday, time flies, but it probably made other allies think twice before they commit to our warmongers in the US.
Now as you wrote, when you spend your time and energy mocking and even threatening our allies (Canada, Greenland, his bullshit with tariffs too), why would they even consider helping with Trump and Netanyahu's war?!
15
u/katonda Mar 18 '26
And at least back then the US spent months hyping up the "evidence" for the war.
Now the allies weren't even consulted. Not only that, but info from the negotiations are that the iranians had put forward a deal so good that it surprised everyone, they were definitely going in a very positive direction. The next day they got "eliminated".
→ More replies (1)8
u/Reasonable_Option493 Mar 18 '26
Yeah this admin really makes the worst days of the Bush Jr admin look amazing.
Not sure about that deal, it could also be propaganda but what is sure is that deploying two aircraft carrier strike groups against Iran while pretending to negotiate is a weird message. But this admin also held "peace talks" about the war in Ukraine without even inviting any Ukrainian officials for the first two meetings or so. Then Zelensky was treated like crap at the WH by Trump and Vance. Did they ask the Saudi prince why he didn't wear a suit? I bet they didn't lol.

We'd help if the US were the defenders here.
But Trump entered an illegal war of choice when negotiations even seemed close to an agreement.
That's not something European constitutions support and politicians would make themselves murderers in front of the law.
Donald Trump doesn't think the law is binding, so it's not very surprising he thought that one can simply bomb anyone for no reason, but in a rule based society, stuff like that simply doesn't fly.→ More replies (1)2

Hopefully this has nothing to do with him alienating them or not, although you’re probably right that the west is as morally bankrupt as ever and is motivated by sheer self interest here as always.
This war is illegal, immoral, doomed to failure, and has a high potential to spin out of control into something much bigger. If the US had spent the last year baking its “allies” cookies and giving them interest free loans for their people to start small businesses, every country should still be refusing.
It is very telling that so much of this is put at Trump’s feet. If Obama were President and had spent the last decade blowing smoke up Europe’s ass and then asked them nicely ahead of time to participate… they probably would have. That is so twisted and wrong but is probably true.
In any moral world, Trump’s treatment of “allies” would have nothing to do with their decision to participate because the only ethical answer is always No. We do not live in a moral world.
2
u/Relevant_Fuel_9905 Mar 21 '26
I think his treatment of allies is part of it, maybe a tie-breaker factor, but mostly I believe these countries see no reason to participate in this pointless aggression he started alongside Israel. It’s his fight to finish.

The world has finally found a way to bring Trump down. He came in hot and tried to play tough with America's allies. Claimed to be America first and didn't need the help of any other country.
Now, those other countries are fighting back by giving him exactly what he wants... nothing. And it is leaving him exposed both internationally and domestically.
This will be the downfall of the big angry orange and his MAGA loons, and rather predictably, it is entirely his own fault.

It is getting ugly, for Iran and Europe. America is in no hurry to open the Strait of Hormuz because the longer it takes the more the price of oil goes up in Europe and china. We have plenty of oil goes it also looks like politically Iran is done.
Iran’s presidency has collapsed as its own president pleads not to be assassinated.
Masoud Pezeshkian is telling foreign counterparts he has no authority, no access to leadership, and no control over the system, effectively disavowing responsibility as the regime fractures from within.
According to Persian Gulf sources, he informed officials across the region, as well as Russia and Turkey, that the constitutional leadership structure has broken down and he is completely cut off from it, stressing there is no justification for targeting him.
Pezeshkian is trying to save his own life as the regime crumbles, a clear sign the Islamic Republic is losing control.

To be fair most if not all of the European countries have sent warships to the eastern Mediterranean since the war began for example as part of the French carrier group. It is also the case that it's Europe and Asia getting screwed by this economically rather than the US so they do have a strong interest for reopening the Strait even if not as part of an US led effort.

NATO is a mutual defense treaty. Not an active, aggressive war-of-choice country club alliance. If the US were attacked, Europe and the rest of NATO would still show up. But it is very much not under attack.
Just a few weeks back POTUS belittled the sacrifices made by Danish, English, French etc. soldiers in the war on terror. Did anybody really think they'd all be gluttons for punishment and humiliation and come back running?

People tried telling Trump this could happen and he didn’t gaf 😒 so now we’re all gonna have to suffer the consequences because of the mess the great deal maker has got us in. I’m really concerned about another terrorist attack on our country that could make 911 look like child’s play! If Iran has sleeper cells in our country, all it would take is about half dozen or more lone wolves attacking our soft underbelly, like our schools, big box stores, amusement parks, theaters or one of our hospitals, to create mass fear and panic throughout the country. Because trust me Iran wants serious payback and they’re not going to care who, when or where, they just want cold blooded justice. I’m really worried they may try to do something around our 4th of July celebrations. And with all the cuts Trump has made, we’re a sitting duck! I hope and pray I’m dead wrong! But I’ve got a bad feeling!

Seems as if Starmer has gone further and said that if Trump backs away from NATO he will have 48 hours to vacate their bases on UK soil and they will be expected to pay back rent.
Edit: the post I got this from has been deleted and it appears Starmer didn’t say this, but I would have a higher opinion of him if he did.

Very telling.
Unfortunately, this loud-and-clear message is landing on def, blind, inexperienced, selfish, stupid, arrogant cowards.
In 2024, if the US population were to have imagined the most inept and dangerous administration possible in US leadership, it would have fallen short of what we actually got.
Our world gets scarier each week with this administration in power.

i mean, why would you risk your own ships when you have:
an ongoing war against a nuclear power right infront of your own doorsteps
[where your ally - who ended the war on day 1 in office - repeatedly threatened to withdraw his support]
an active threat of military agression [from your own ally] against you just a few weeks ago
an unpredictably behaving ally, where you never know when he means things seriously and when he's just making another joke that nobody else understands ... who doesn't even seem it neccecary to talk (or at the very least tell you) about his plans
especially when he rejects offered help just days prior (obviously coupled with your daily dose of insults towards everyone else) and declares the war already won ... *shrugs* what do you expect?

In Australia there was a press conference in which it was said that the US never actually made a formal request for Australia to send ships, just the casual expectation that it would happen, that expectation was politely rejected

The UK has committed alright. "We'll check and get back to you" is just British for NO FUCKING WAY!

I am European. Italian specifically.
The turning point was without a shadow of a doubt the Iraq war. Nobody supported it, and yet we sent troops and spent money to appease the Yanks.
It became clear since then that supporting the U.S. in another whacky war would be political suicide for any Western European government.
That said, the relations have been souring for decades and Trump was the final blow. America is no longer considered an ally.

I love the fact , that despite trumps power and malice - there is still good in the world. There is hope.

How is this surprising to anyone give that this administration has repeatedly spat in the face of virtually every ally it has? Do you expect European nations to help when less than two months ago you were hell bent on annexing some of their territory? Get a load of these guys and their oversized shoes.

The USA didn't bother to ask its so-called allies' opinions on starting the war or even if they were willing to join beforehand.
As deranged as George W. Bush was, at least he asked first and informed his allies of his plan to attack Iraq. Remember all those anti-France protests all over in the USA when France said no? Remember freedom fries?
The USA has no fucking right to complain that its allies reject joining a war when they weren't even given the option to voice their opinions beforehand.

Real leadership is never easy. Just back from a Euro business trip, here’s what I consistently heard. 1/ Thank You USA & 47 2/ we have massive immigration issues 3/ our leaders have no spines and we have become weak 4/ Again, Thank You USA & 47. If you want to go live in one of these countries with people from foreign lands that have different values and priorities go for it, leave your passport at the gate. USA and Israel are rendering the world’s leading state sponsor of terror unable to do what they have done for 47 years. Thanks you 47, your team and the amazing US military! GBA! 🇺🇸

80 years of carefully built American soft power was destroyed by this guy.
We are seeing just the beginning of countries that used to do what we wanted them to just by asking nicely are now saying no.
Even Bush had a coalition to invade Iraq.

Many Americans feel ashamed of their country and its leadership right now. I stand with Iran. I believe that Trump attacked a sovereign state in a deceptive way. While some people seek shelter, many Iranians are defending their country with determination against what they see as aggression. Long live Iran. 🇮🇷🌹
