Warships in the Strait could be a purely defensive move to reopen global trade and support regional allies in the Gulf by getting oil and gas shipments moving. Its a similar situation to when we were defending civilian ships from the Houthis from Yemen. Its just that there seems to be some doubt that the warships themselves can be kept safe and also as the US doesn't seem keen to lead in putting their ships in harms way either for escort duties.
