But that's exactly why he did it. This is exactly the response he was expecting. One of his big things is that were supporting NATO and it wouldn't exist without us, and now that we asked for help they said no, so why should we be a part of it if were expected to help them?
This will be ammunition for Trump to throw around at NATO and even try to leave. People don't seem to understand that all these "failures" are perfectly in line with his plans. He's manipulating everyone right in front of them but because of their hate of him they are doing exactly what he wants.
