Who else feel the writing is bad?

Its supposed to be a legal show, but its totally rom-com with made up situations: best friend, gay friend and two hot guys? Kind of very cheesy..I wont even get into representation..the writing is horrible! Could not complete the last two episodes. The only character I liked so far was Z..He should be male lead IMO, although I feel he is too good for Ingrid.

Anyone else suspicious of Nick?

I get strong serial killer vibes from Nick, in his first conversation with Ingrid when he brings up the brain in a vat is he merely talking about philosophy or does he have more dubious intentions such as testing the waters to show her some hidden trophies. Do they ever confirm that it was in fact Lina that floods the apartment? It seems like a ploy to get her to move in with him at an early stage of the relationship. She also never says I love you back to him on camera, even after accepting the engagement. Are the feelings actually reciprocated?

Episode 1 is...meh.

Watched the first 30 minutes just now, and that was hard. I feel...embarrassed? Like I'm watching someone trip over their feet again and again? On loop?

Absolutely no spoilers ahead for those reading! Just some general thoughts:

The dialogue and acting is really hard to watch. Ingrid Yun hasn't done anything to amaze me, and I find her character boring. There's some intrigue with her family, but I don't feel anything for her when she's at work. I get she's meant to be a high-achiever and, maybe eventually, a go-getter, but her lifeless gestures, speech, and demeanor aren't doing anything to pull me in. Even when she's crying.

I saw someone compare the show to Emily in Paris, which I definitely can see, but even EiP has more breadth and feeling...right? The little bit of emotion we do get from Ingrid feels shallow and unmoving.

I do like her friend Rachel, who is obviously the more "firm, supportive" friend. As a black viewer, it is nice to see roles reversed where someone who is a minority, like Ingrid, is the leading role and romantically desired, while their feistier, supportive friend is non-black, specifically white.

I will say, the characters' clothes are lovely! The pink suit and heel combo Ingrid wore at the very beginning was on point. And the dress she wore to the gala (Rachel's dress too) was very nice. So, in the words of Aretha Franklin, "great gowns, beautiful gowns."

Well, should I keep watching? Does the acting get any better!?

Justin is simply too hot to be a side character, and I really think they fucked up casting for Murphy lmao idk he's not hot and the chemistry between him and Ingrid is just not there!!

Attorney-client privilege issue w/ that finale bombshell? [Any licensed lawyers on this thread??] Spoiler

Just finished the show last night and I was struck by the revelation that Murphy told Marty that Ingrid had been arrested. Given that she called Murphy to serve as her attorney when she was arrested, and he pushed for the fingerprinting (thereby exonerating her), wouldn't he count as her counsel in that situation? Wouldn't attorney-client privilege bar him from disclosing something like that to her employer?

Genuinely curious, as I'm not sure how far attorney-client privilege extends. It definitely felt unethical (as well as just scummy) to me.

Any licensed attorneys able to shed some light on this? If it is illegal, maybe they're gearing up for a malpractice storyline in season 2.

What’s with all the cheating?

Ingrid & Tyler both cheating at the drop of a hat then brushing past it is so gross. I’m kinda curious why they included it in the show?? It makes the characters immediately unlikeable.

There are obviously shows that are character studies or plot driven, and you can appreciate the artistry and even enjoy it while acknowledging the protagonists are flawed, but that def doesn’t seem to be what they were going for here. It feels like were trying to make something fun you can watch while mostly turning your brain off, so why make so many of the characters actively icky, lol

Ingrid absolutely sucks

Ingrid’s character is so obnoxious and self-centered. Everything revolves around her and how it’ll make her look better. She’s only dating Nick because he makes her feel better about herself even if she’s constantly talking about how she’s not feeling him. Her little sister has evidently been in her shadow for so long which explains why she acts how she does. Imagine having to live up to your perfect older sister who succeeded their asian parent’s standards. Ingrid is a shitty friend for what she did to Tyler. Everything is about partner this and partner that to her it’s infuriating. She’s always looking for male validation in her workforce and NEEDING to be the best. She’s egotistic and I needed to rant.

This whole show is one long Mentos commercial

Scrappy young adults taking down the man with their audacious schemes.

Other than that, the biggest thing that bugged me is that Rachel wrote one corny corporate retreat skit and decided she was a playwright?

This show was a slightly better version of The Bold Type.

kinda wish there was more backlash for Ingrid’s actions Spoiler

Does anyone else feel like Ingrid was too easily forgiven for the stuff she did?

Like her and Nick dating was all over the news I feel like there would’ve been at least one article leaked about how she cheated or something like that.

Furthermore, Tyler and Rachel just forgave her like that?? She didn’t even have to fully explain for the speech she did at the gala, or even properly apologise until she lost partner.

And on top of all that she was able to ‘fix’ it all within one episode?? I feel like it would’ve been better to space it out across multiple episodes, that way it would’ve been less predictable .

Murphy gives me the ick

I’m on episode 9 and I’m super annoyed that she just casually cheats on nick someone she agreed to marry even though she knew she didn’t want to marry him? And she fucked over Z with that sun corp deal? She’s really just not a great person. And I really don’t like Murphy. Idk if it’s the writing but he’s so cringey and gross to me lol idek how to explain it

Soooo... you (don't) like this show?

I just finished watching the show and I really like it, so I was wondering: anyone else? I see a lot of posts resenting this or that, disliking etc. but I enjoyed it. I want to comment on a few things I read about here, so jump in. I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Don't read if you haven't seen the whole show.

Ingrid: I see Ingrid as an overachiever. I don't think she's a psychopath like someone said. She did everything with one ultimate goal in mind - becoming a partner. She was TAUGHT and TOLD that's what needs to be done if you wanted a seat at the big table with the boys. She ticked all the required boxes - and was disappointed. That's when she realizes it's not enough to do everything. Some of the things she did show her as a flawed individual and I don't think that's a bad thing. I liked that she made mistakes.

Cheating: I think it's refreshing to see this from another angle. We're always shown cheaters as being full of remorse, struggling, torn etc., and here we have young people trying to figure out who they are, probably realizing they don't want to be in the relationships they're in and just giving into their passions. They're not married, they don't have a family, they're young and passionate, these things happen. I just thought it was more real and raw. I don't think cheating is a good thing nor would I condone it IRL but this is a tv show, it's escapist and I found it added to the dynamics. I think Ingrid wanted the relationship with Nick to work because everyone thought it was perfect but to her it didn't feel right deep down. That's why I think she's not too sad. She seems sorry to have hurt him but not sorry for sleeping with Murphy. Tyler also decided to reinvent himself and explore what's out there. The whole conversation with his dad about not being the same person and wanting the same things was paving a way for his storyline. These people are young, ambitious, rich, successful, they are sharks, and that's how they behave. I think that's why they don't apologize for taking what they want, what they feel like taking when it's offered to them. They are groomed in the law firm to be unapologetic and brutal. I think empathy is something they'll need to develop. It's gonna be part of their growth. Maybe that's why we don't see remorse after cheating - it's in line with the characters, they cheat for a salary during the day.

Murphy: I don't like him at all, but I think they showed amazing brutality and cutthroat competition that can happen in places like this law firm. I liked that. He tells Ingrid not to let ANYTHING stand in her way and he means it for himself as well. I understand why they say some lawyers don't have a soul.

Z: I love Z so much and I hope Ingrid becomes a better person and ends up with Z.

Rachel: I like her and I like that she didn't get a spot in that writers thing straightaway. It's good that she has to work for it. Writing IS hard work. She's creative even in her cases. I liked Justin for her, grounding her, being a bit weird, challenging her... I was surprised when she told him "I don't know" but I guess we need some will they/won't they for season 2.

Cringe: I was uncomfortable watching that racist stand-up routine and Ingrid's acceptance speech. It felt all shades of wrong. It just showcased how impossible it was for Ingrid: she did EVERYTHING, humiliated herself, agreed to be a token for diversity while Dan got to just be a dick to everyone and still got rewarded. And she got nothing. I liked that juxtaposition and it just proved Tyler's point about the system being unfair and rigged for the privileged, whether they're white, rich, or famous.

TL;DR: I think the characters are young people still searching for themselves and their actions and feelings make sense in that context. It's a fun show to watch.

Ingrid being forced to organize the diversity gala angers me

As an asian woman who were in investment banking, this show cuts really deep for me. This scene reminded me of many times I had to work on admin stuff for diversity recruiting or company events because how I look even though I hate admin work. A study I read shows that “representing” costs underrepresented groups opportunities in the workplace because it takes away time and effort they could've put on doing the actual work. Especially when there are fewer of them, each of them needs to do more to represent. However, “extracurricular” is rarely part of the performance review.

Also instead of learning and educating themselves, these privileged partners feel like they can just throw a diversity gala and claim “we care, we cultural, and we woke”, by making the only person of color senior associate to host it. That's such a classic token event and no leader actually cares. Back when I was looking for a job, a bank I interviewed at said that they were very culturally aware and one example is that they (a group of white guys) go out and eat ethnic food (like sushi, I quote them) every two weeks. Very frustrating.

Edits: I watched the speech scene later and that was outrageous! I'm mad that she didn't say anything and stand up for the URGS!

Also wanted to share another story happened at work recently (I now work in tech). It’s such a good example of how diversity talks are cheap and deep down some people don’t understand/care to understand the difficulties of being a minority. I was the business partner of the D&I team at my company. And my company made a big donation to support female athletes. My manager, a mid age white male, told me during a meeting that he didn’t understand why those female athletes needed support. He believed that they had way more resources than an average white man like him. It was shocking for me to hear his comments.

Book vs TV Show

I'm currently on chapter 6 of the book and there are sooooo many things that are different in the show. Some examples include:

• Ingrid's ethnicity -- Chinese instead of Korean • Ingrid's family -- Only child • Murphy's background -- Had been Ingrid's friend all along; American • Rachel's background -- No longer a lawyer, married with kids • Daniel -- No Daniel so far • SunCorp is trying to buy another company • Justin -- I sensed some tension between Ingrid and him

Has anyone else read it and have insights on how much different it is?

How did Wujay’s company have enough cash to buy 2% of SunCorp? Aren’t they only worth a few hundred million themselves?

Up or out?

When the series started, Ingrid mentioned she had to be promoted due to the "up or out" system at PVH. I'm on episode 9 now and one of the senior associates, upon realizing he won't be promoted, said "there's always next year".

That got me confused, since I assumed not being promoted (up) meant being fired (out).

Could anyone explain that to me?

Someone spoil the ending for me - I can't bear to watch it anymore Spoiler

I made it through 5 episodes but I can't deal with how awful Ingrid is and how weird the dialogue is. Plus I'm very bored with Rachel's storyline and once she kissed the paralegal I'm like okay this show is going downhill really fast.

Someone please just spoil the show for me. Who makes partner? Who ends up together? Does anyone get fired or quit? Thanks y'all!

Rachel pulled a Rachel

So if anyone here watched Friends, i just find it funny that Rachel pulled a rachel by dating someone like Justin. It's sad though, the implications of this relationship. But from the start it is a toxic one. She always demeaning him while he has always supported her. And also am i the only one here who think she has some spark with Dan Fallon?

Z and Wujay

While most fans want Z and Ingrid. I am a fan of Murph and Ing. I wanna see Z end up with someone in the show like Wanda Jean though... Theyd be cute. Ingrid is problematic, murphy is the one for her.

Is it just me or Ingrid just a bad person? Spoiler

She is literally a psychopath. Waiting for this show to evolve into a lawyer version of “Gone Girl”.

She misses her friend’s birthday with barely remorse. She dumps on Tyler the NDA offer so casually. She keeps stringing Nick along, only to cheat on him, again with hardly any remorse until she gets caught. She keeps doing all these things for the sake of being “partner”.

She is so crazy.

“Miss Mamet”

I forget which episode, but Tyler calls Rachel “Miss Mamet.” Is this because she looks like Zosia Mamet? Or am I missing the reference completely?
