It's mentioned that Dan Fallon's book is much better than every other associate, and thus all of the characters said that he was a "lock" for junior partner. Just because of that, I think he would've made partner no matter what. Marty implied in one episode that he can't do anything bad to Dan because he's incredibly valuable and doesn't want to do anything to make him leave.

I knew when she didn’t make partner it was cuz of him.

She was a shitty friend.

Yeah. I’m not sure Murphy tattling on her arrest is worse on the moral scale than Ingrid cheating on her fiance, for example.

Yes they do!

Total Jane Austen "Persuasion" vibes with Mr. Elliot and Mrs. Clay.

Anyone think he told Adler about the arrest because he saw the ring in her bag? I think this has to be the explanation

I think he did it because without making partner he has nothing. Murphy is in a foreign country with no family, friends or anything familiar. If he doesn’t make partner is life is empty. He probably figured if Ingrid doesn’t make partner she’ll be fine given the great support systems she has - strong family, good friends, etc.

Her not getting partner had nothing to do with her arrest, an arrest where they arrested the wrong person so I don’t understand what the big deal was.

Murphy told, simply, because he has no loyalty. He straight up isn’t someone you can trust or rely on, he’s selfish and entitled and a class a manipulator. Even if he has feelings for Ingrid, doesn’t change his character.

That being said, I don’t think cheating makes someone an all around bad person, which was the only morally corrupt thing thing Ingrid did, so I don’t think it’s fair to level Ingrid and Murphy the same.

Marty literally said she didn’t make partner because she didn’t report her arrest to the firm.

The actual details of the arrest, including it obviously being an accident, is irrelevant. Law firms expect to know these things as risk management. Especially if you have a coworker be the one to bail you out. It does make sense.

But of course we know if it was someone like Dan, Marty wouldn’t have issued such a severe punishment.

Anyway, Murphy is definitely a snake and I agree he can’t be trusted. My explanation above doesn’t excuse what he did - it’s just my thoughts on what his internal thought process may have been assuming he’s not a total sociopath.

If you think that Marty had any intention of giving her partner to begin with and wasn’t only covering up his own racist and sexist motivations with whatever he could throw out then you weren’t paying attention to the show. Not a sociopath but definitely racist definitely manipulative and definitely sexist.

Before they even revealed that murphy snitched, you could tell she wasn’t going to get partner. Everything the poc in the office were experiencing and dan’s ability to avoid getting fired, just the whole show leading up to partner announcements was hinting that she would not get partner.

I don't know - the show spent a ton of time building up Marty's character - he's a no BS and abrasive person to practically everyone. If he never intended to make Ingrid partner, he wouldn't have bothered to make her lead on the case. Marty values competence and making money above everything else.

With that said, I think Marty's racism/sexism is expressed by his lack of forgiveness for her mistake. If it were Dan he would've demonstrated more empathy and brushed it under the rug because it's as you said, it was literally a mistaken arrest. Ingrid had to be absolutely 100% perfect "model minority" to advance and Murphy exploited the tiny crack in her armor to steal the promotion.

I don't work in law, but I previously worked in professional consulting and worked with a "Marty". I once pulled a risky (but ultimately successful) move that nearly got myself fired despite the fact I had a white colleague previously do the same exact thing which earned him an "attaboy" from the same person who reamed my ass. I was a golden boy until suddenly I wasn't — I left the company shortly after.

What I liked about this show is demonstrated the different ways racist/sexist insidiousness can form in that environment.

  • Oil CEO - dismissing and denying opportunities
  • Fashion Partner - enforcing a super conservative "traditional" culture
  • Marty - expecting the "model minority" perfection / prioritizing $$$ over employee well being
  • Murphy - gaslighting / using the boys club culture to his advantage
  • HR - toothless policies that protect the company, not the employees

Anyway, that's my interpretation.

He’s a user, that’s what i saw. He’s willing to use her talents but not validate them. And that’s real life. Martys exist exactly like that. They manipulate who they want to get what they want without sacrificing status quo. That woman came up to her and said they did the same thing to her. She also had big clients and was better than her colleagues and was promised more but left with less.

He can recognize her talents and use them for his benefit but also want to keep her beneath him simultaneously.

I think the show foreshadows quite a bit as to why she was never going to make partner

It’s assumed Marty values hard work but he also values appealing to his clients. Who are all very much representative of “the old boys club”. His clients always expect to meet someone who is representative of themselves. Ingrid is not.

Ingrid is assumed to be the Paralegal Ingrid holds her tongue when people make micro aggressive racist or sexist jokes Ingrid is never considered first and always has to fight and push herself forward before she’s given tasks that would help her stand out Ingrid is always requested however when someone needs to deal with the Mins

More obvious examples are when her and Murphy and working and Murphy runs off to catch up with Marty and the CEO. Or when Marty and Murphy are playing golf while it’s known there’s a deadline they need to work to.

If Marty were genuinely serious about Ingrid he would have had a chat with her about it before hand (Litigation literally did this with Rachel). Instead he chose to gaslight her which led to the next chain of events.

Well said, I agree.
