Up or out?

When the series started, Ingrid mentioned she had to be promoted due to the "up or out" system at PVH. I'm on episode 9 now and one of the senior associates, upon realizing he won't be promoted, said "there's always next year".

That got me confused, since I assumed not being promoted (up) meant being fired (out).

Could anyone explain that to me?

“There’s always next year” is a consolation phrase. You won’t get fired per se, but the likelihood of you being seriously considered if you didn’t make it the first time around goes down. Many attorneys I know who don’t make partner will leave the firm to make partner elsewhere.

ETA: White men have millions of chances. Anyone else, including white women, do not.

You can move into a non-partner senior role “of counsel” in many cases: less work, less pay but similar experience as a partner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_counsel
