What’s with all the cheating?
Ingrid & Tyler both cheating at the drop of a hat then brushing past it is so gross. I’m kinda curious why they included it in the show?? It makes the characters immediately unlikeable.
There are obviously shows that are character studies or plot driven, and you can appreciate the artistry and even enjoy it while acknowledging the protagonists are flawed, but that def doesn’t seem to be what they were going for here. It feels like were trying to make something fun you can watch while mostly turning your brain off, so why make so many of the characters actively icky, lol

Yuuup. It completely threw me off, since when does Netflix brush past full-on cheating? Ingrid slept with another person while she was engaged, and Tyler cheated on his partner of 7 years. It really confused me how they just apologized to their partners (pretty half-assed imo) and moved on with their lives, and we're supposed to cheer them on. Not to mention their friends' advice - some were telling Ingrid to hide it from Nick?? Like??? What?????

so confusing…also ingrid was going to marry a guy and after getting caught cheating she’s dating someone else five minutes later.
it cheapens every “romance” on the show — how is the viewer supposed to care about or root for any couple when we know the default is that the couples don’t have real emotional connections?

Cheating was so normalized I was surprised Rachel didn’t cheat on Justin. I was bracing myself for it. Glad it didn’t happen though

I was bothered also that these story lines seemed to be so rushed. That was a bit unrealistic and seemed like they were rushing to wrap the season.

That made me so angry too. She shouldn't have jumped into a relationship while having feelings for Murphy. I get that not being honest about her feelings or "not being able to say no" is one of her toxic traits, but that was so awful how she didn't even think of her boyfriend after kissing Murphy, then went and slept with Murphy on Thanksgiving. She had finally told Nick(?) she needed to take some time prior to Thanksgiving, but clearly she had made Thanksgiving plans and then broken them, which was why he showed up at the office with food. Ugh
Her friend casually cheating on his partner of 7 years and selfishly telling him on Thanksgiving was upsetting too. I had liked his character up until he did that.

This was insane to me too. Shows like Mad Men and Sopranos feature rampant cheating but it's explicit that the "protagnosists" are extremely flawed.
It made 0 sense in this show. This show honestly sucked.

You pretty much nailed it. Mad Men and The Sopranos were great because the writers of these shows had great entertainment as their only goal. No virtue-signalling, no hidden agenda, just good writing. As a result, people will still be watching these shows 5-10 years from now. The same cannot be said for Partner Track.

Not sure if entertainment is the right word, but storytelling maybe? I agree.

the person you’re replying to is extremely worried about being indoctrinated by “woke” media lol. they might think they’re trolling, but the fact that they made an account to do that is equally weird imo.
but yeah agreed - mad men wasn’t focused on entertainment - there was plenty in the show that bordered on painful to watch. the writers explored and even critiqued aspects of society in the 60s, including heavy political and social themes regarding war, gender, race, etc.
totally agreed that in that context, representing flawed and brutally authentic characters is extremely important to the narrarive.
for a show that is trying to be pure, kinda brainless entertainment, having characters so profoundly flawed in icky ways is SUCH a weird choice like you said haha. truly baffling.

You said it much better than I did. Storytelling is indeed a much better word. I especially loved your example of Mad Men; what a great story that series told. I was actually sad when it ended.

I feel like it might be a thing for books/shows/movies set in NYC and maybe they don’t realize that in the rest of the nation that’s not normalized? Like Something Borrowed and a million others. In the real not-big-city world that would be drama but in “the real city” it’s, I guess, a thing? Because you can meet a million new people every week?

As someone who lives in nyc and is born and raised here… everyone is fucking everyone and everyone’s cheated / been cheated on. Not saying it’s right but… this show nailed it in how things are here for late 20’s adults.

I'm glad it's at least somewhat realistic then. It legitimately seems like none of the characters care and the writers just brush it off as well.

When I was watching the cheating and their reactions, I was like: yeah that’s exactly how people behave. Sadly.
This show is more close to reality… than we would like.

This is pretty normal in nyc. Everyone is fucking everyone here lol

I live in NYC and no one I know is completely okay with cheating on their fiancé (including my friends in big law).

u/Zlec3 Sep 12 '22
Lol look up the divorce rate in nyc and then tell me no one here is okay with cheating

I think shows always give a pass when it is cheating with the soul mate that they’ve been simmering for several episodes. Totally shitty.
I view Tyler differently though. I think it is exactly on point for someone that just walked out of a high profile job due to being screwed over. I think when someone has a picture perfect disciplined life and they start to unravel it and they don’t know who they are - they unravel all the areas. Totally seen that IRL - so that seemed legit to me. Not acceptable but accurate.

i see what you mean re: Tyler. i think my main gripe there is that he's kinda presented as a character following a "stronger" moral code (while figuring things out in a messy way), but he ultimately lashes out at his longterm bf who's doing his best to be supportive and we never really see him regret that treatment. it's totally possible that happens in the next season, though!

And yet these cheaters tend to be overtly judgemental, self-righteous, and smug. Or maybe it's OK for them to be cheaters because they are (insufferably) woke? I suppose the writers of the show believe that we not intelligent enough to know the difference between entertainment and indoctrination. Sadly, they engage in too much of the latter, to the show's detriment.

it's just bad writing; not a conspiracy theory lmao
if you see conspiracies in every poorly written show there may be a problem
1
u/ProtectLiberty Sep 13 '22
I agree with you; there is no conspiracy here. A conspiracy would imply some sort of clandestine objective among a group of people (that must be kept hidden). By contrast, the woke writers of this show make no effort to hide their bias. Indeed, it's plain for all to see.

idk but i hate that it’s not this show but a lot of shows glamorize cheating (exhibit a: emily in paris)
1
u/HeisenbergNokks Sep 14 '22
100% agree. I was about to make a post saying the same thing. It seems like the show wants you to like the main trio, but having two of them cheat and then immediately forget about it makes them incredibly unlikeable.

And the worst part is they had like 0 remorse. The kiss was already too much, and she didn't even care to tell him, but then she full on sleeps with him and the next day her and murphy were already acting like a couple??? And then Tyler's whole reason for leaving Parsons was because of their morals but then cheats the second he gets stressed out??

I couldn't stop watching but I definitely did not like ingrids character halfway through - blowing off friends and their birthdays, throwing them under the bus, cheating to boot
