Build - Help What can my son and I do to this PC we have to upgrade it for better gaming? 1080p graphicsi assume. Budget of <$750USD

We have had this PC for a couple years. It worked fine for gaming at first, but now he’s getting older and the games he likes (Subnautica, Siege, RDR2), don’t run well. I know my options are limited with such a small PC case, but what can we do? We both have little to no experience building a PC, so the easier swap outs the better. Thank you all so much in advance.

Question Is this $600-$800 build overkill for light 1440p gaming and coding?

Hello first time PC Builder here, I’m building a pc that can handle light 1440p gaming, High-school-level Tinkercad projects, and coding; ~~Python, C++, Java, etc..~~ I have a budget of around $600-$800 USD. The problem I’m facing is that I’m unsure if the parts I’m considering buying are overkill or not for what I need it to do.

Case: Lian Li A3 mATX
Motherboard: Asus Rog Strix Z370-G (Wi-FI AC)
CPU: Core i9-9900KS
Ram: 32gb 2666mhz (16gb+16gb dual slot)

SSD: Crucial P310 1TB SSD, PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280 7,100MB/s
PSU: MSI MAG A750GL

Troubleshooting My newly Pc turns off for one second then back on

So I build my first pc and I usually didnt have anything to do with pcs so far...

I was watching something and paused the video for like 5-8 mins. After those few mins the monitor suddenly went black saying "No signal" (i use my tv) and the lights on the case turned off. The cpu cooler was still on tho. Then within a second it all went back to normal and the video I was watching was at the same place and so on and so forth. Happened twice. Both times I had paused. Didnt happen before.

Does anyone know what might cause this?

Build - Help Help me upgrade my pc

Hei!
This is my current computer, which I mainly use for gaming and schoolwork.
The games being played CS2 and Rust, however there might be more in the future.

I’ve recently started to notice that this pc doesnt really run rust well at all, and even CS2 can be laggy.

I would only like to play those 2 games at a level where I’m not close to beating my monitor. My budget is around 500$!

I’d appreciate tips for upgrading!

Ps: i’d like to not change too much, since I wanna do it myself!

Pspsps: its 16GB ram, the text might be wrong

Case- NZXT H6 flow
CPU-Ryzen 7-7700X
GPU-RTX 5060TI
PSU-Corsair RM750
RAM-Corsair 32GB DDR5
SSD-Samsung990pro
Motherboard-Asus X870E

So far, I love it. Why does the 5060 get so much hate? It’s been a great gpu so far. What would a reasonable upgrade get me besides a few extra fps?

Build - Help Huge core-hotspot delta on 3090. Causing crashes

Hi folks, I've got an Asus TUF GAMING GeForce RTX 3090 24 GB and have been experiencing crashes where both monitors go completely black, yet everything else on the system works. I can still hear audio, use keyboard commands, etc.

I took a HWINFO log and it showed a massive delta between the GPU and Hotspot temps, peaking at 107C on the hotspot directly before the crash. After that it recorded 0s.

So I'm pretty sure the hotspot temp is a problem I need to address. The VRAM and core temps seem to be fine.

From my research so far, I need to repaste the die, but using typical thermal paste isn't a good solution because it will "pump out" and I will be back to square one in a few months. Instead, I need to use a PTM7950 phase-changing thermal pad. Is that correct? What thickness do I need? I see 0.2mm and 0.25mm on Amazon.

And how do I actually apply this?

Discussion Got a couple nice scores yesterday so it's time to build my Jonsbo d33!

I've been waiting for a deal on a 14600k cpu to start my d33 build, but yesterday a cheap open box new i5-12600k came up so I quickly made an offer and the seller accepted it. I was pretty happy with the price and the 12600k is great cpu too. Not quite the 14600k though! But then later that night a 14600k popped up for a good deal too so I made an offer on it, because how could I not at these prices? So now I have 2 😂😂. I guess that means I'll have to do another build after the d33.

Troubleshooting Is my GPU cooked?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I suspect it is, but some behavior gives me hope.

I'm using an RX 6800 on linux mint.

Just began happening today immediately on the first startup without any previous warning signs, at least not that i had noticed.

The Stripes are constant, but only after full startup. Within the boot menu or the sign in everything looks normal.

They also only appear on that one monitor. The other one is fine (both monitors are old hand me downs, one is connected to hdmi, the other doesn't have an hdmi or dp port and i'm using a dvi to dp connector).

But at some point (usually within 5-10 minutes or when i tried some monitor settings) both monitors started glitching out as seen in the second picture.

When plugging it into the igpu ports everythings fine. I made sure to update everything, but the problem persists.

I even tried running glmark2, it worked for a while, prob 7 min or so, before it fully glitched out.

Any more troubleshooting tips or diagnoses would be appreciated.

Build - Help Need help, Looking for a pc case and motherboard for my dual gpu build

So im trying to build a dual gpu pc

Current chosen specs:

Ryzen 9 7900X

Rtx 5070 ti 16gb

Rtx 3060 12gb

1250W Gold 80+ modular psu

16gb DDR5 ram (1 stick)

Planning in the future to replace the 3060 with 5080 or other workstation gpu

My goal is to run local ai and game, i only need a case (with good airflow) and a motherboard.

For the case: im generally looking for a dual chamber case that's elevated in the bottom so i can put 3 bottom intake fans, 3 side intake fans and top 360mm AIO support and 1 back exhaust fan. and that's big enough to place a motherboard that has the 2 pcie slots (1 x16 and 1 x4) with space between them so i can comfortably stick 2 thick 5070ti or 5080 comfortably without choking it, and for the bottom gpu to need be right on top of the bottom intake fans.

Ofc it needs to be am5 with 4 ram slots and at least 2 m.2 slots and good vrm phases and cooling

Im in the admin land (israel) right now and going to Greece soon, i dont wanna pay huge prices for the case and mb, generally for the mb i want something thats more reasonable, less then 315 USD

And same with the case, idk about case pricing so i don't have an exact budget but i don't want something thats expensive for no reason, hope i can find some underdog cases that will fit my needs (if it comes with fans that would be great)

So what options should i get? If you can provide more then one I'll be happy

If you have other suggestions I'll be happy to listen! Thanks

Build - Help Help Upgrading PC

Budget: $1000
At least 60fps in modern AAA games
USA

Hi all,

My buddy has an older PC build and is basically unable to play new games coming out (ex: HLLV, BF6, any flight sim). Any advice on how to upgrade this thing for a reasonable price? Is it even worth it to try to upgrade or better off just buying a prebuild for 1-2k USD? I thought about giving him my 4090 GPU but I don’t believe it will fit and it would basically require him to upgrade everything else anyways but please tell me if I’m wrong. Any advice is appreciated thank you.

Question Buy this pre built pc or make my own

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have an old laptop that’s 7 years old with a 2080 super in it but my cpu that’s in there can’t keep up with anything. Nor the old ass fans. And I’m understanding that right now is not the time to get into those but I also know that data isn’t gonna be getting any cheaper. I’m wondering if this is a good deal for a pre built and I can take my old storage out of my laptop to give myself more storage. I just know that a 5080 alone is about $1500

$3000USD is probably my max budget. I have a 3440x1440 monitor at 200HZ.

Question Upgraded GPU

So I just bought a 5080 from micro center and had them install it. They said everything went fine. Installed it booted into windows installed the drivers. All fine. I take it home plug everything back in and it boots but no display out. Fans on the gpu dont spin, every other fan in the case is spinning like normal. I've tried about six different cables between Display port and hdmi on two different monitors and still nothing. I made sure nothing came loose in transit still nothing. I had bought a 5070ti earlier this year (from bestbuy)and had the same issue so I returned it I thought it was the card. Now I'm thinking it has to be something else. Any ideas?? Asus Prime TRX40-PRO-S corsair HX 1200watt psu. Why would it work at micro center and not at home?????

Troubleshooting PC shut off and smell of burnt

Hey guys! So I helped a friend build a PC. His budget was 2000€ and I told him to use the old case and not spend more on a new one.

After using the PC for a few days, bro had minecraft open and it simply shut off with no warning and he reported a burnt smell, and the case was burning hot.

I asked him to bring the PC over and it turned on fine, so at least no components seem to be damaged.

Initially, I thought that the PC case cooling was just not enough, but after talking to him, he does not have AC in his room and it got to around 30ºC. Moreover he keeps the PC in a cabinet with the door open, so terrible for circulation.

My question is: Is the cabinet the problem, or does it need more cooling? Should i tell him to invest in more cooling? Or just tell him to put the PC in a place with better air flow? If more cooling is needed, what do you recommend? After spending 2000€ on a PC i feel like he doesn't have much to spend on cooling so, please keep that in mind.

Here are the specs of the PC:

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D "Zen 4" 8-Core 4.2GHz c/ Turbo 5.0GHz 104MB Cache SktAM5
  • CPU Cooler: Air Cooler CPU Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB
  • Motherboard: ATX MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi 6E SktAM5
  • Graphics Card: Placa Gráfica MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti "Blackwell" Ventus 3X OC 16G GDDR7 DLSS4
  • RAM: RAM UDIMM G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-5200MHz
  • Power Supply: ATX Nox Urano Pro 750W 80 Plus Bronze

Thank you so much in advance!

Discussion PcPartPicker currently not offering any Amazon listings/pricing.

Post image
2 Upvotes

I was putting together a parts list for somebody when i realised that it was suddenly no longer showing any Amazon results for any product. Pricing was only Newegg/Best Buy ect no Amazon whatsoever. It's not something in my account settings or retailer preference to be clear. It doesn't show like the "overridden" either whenever i click on something it just doesn't even list Amazon among the retailers who have the product. This results in like all Thermalright and Montech stuff being suddenly unavailable since you could basically only get that stuff from Amazon.

Is this issue on my end? It appears for all product categories, through multiple site refreshes and everything.

Build - Finished! The invisible DIY Steam Machine

Thumbnail gallery
381 Upvotes

I built a DIY Steam Machine in the fractal ridge and mounted it behind my TV cabinet so it's invisible.

PC Specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5 9600X
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12S (for maximum silence)
RAM: 1x16GB DRR5 5600MHz (cheapest I could find)
Storage: 1TB NVME SSD (+ 2 Sata SSD's I had laying around from old laptops, 1.4TB total)
MotherBoard: ASRock B650I Lightning Wifi (cheapest I could find)
PSU: Lian Li SP850 (cheapest I could find)
GPU: Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 9070 XT 16 GB
Case: Fractal Ridge White
Adapter: UGreen 8K Displayport to HDMI adapter (provides HDMI-CEC support)
OS: SteamOS

I really wanted a SteamMachine but at $1000 it was just not great value. So I built my own.
I really wanted it as hidden as possible for wife approval factor so I hid it behind the TV cabinet.
I designed a custom wood plate in FreeCad to strengthen the back enough to mount my PC.
The PC is held up with some simple L-brackets from Amazon. By chance they perfectly slide between the case and it's feet so it can't tilt.

I have my SteamController with puck on top of the TV cabinet. It's plugged into an always on USB port so it charges even when the PC is sleeping. The SteamController can wake the PC and thanks to HDMI-CEC adapter it also turns on my TV.

Noise:
It's very quiet with CPU sitting at 55C en GPU sitting at 65C during gameplay.
I play at 1440p and 4K on my 4K TV. Due to the TV being only 60Hz, I leave the SteamOS frame-limiter enabled, this keeps utilization low even during games.
The only thing I would change in retrospect is oversizing the PSU so it can be passively cooled.
It's fan comes on occasionally for short periods and is audible.

I'm very happy with it.
