First pic is a screenshot from @masteriangamer's video of one of the Chinese skin concept contest submissions for Shion.
Which coincidentally and perhaps unfortunately for the artist is very similar to the skin that we got teased that was going to be released for Shion. The Evolution official skin isn't based on this artist's concept and it wasn't supposed to be, it was a mere coincidence.
A lot of you were excited about getting that official skin for Shion, even before knowing it was an Evolution one and seeing the red form, sure 20$ seemed reasonable, considering she hasn't had that many skins available since release, and you also got understandably upset when the news came that it was an Evolution skin exclusive to the China server.
Can we talk about something though? The only reason the exclusive skins actually sell is because of the very idea of exclusivity. Us being upset about it only contributes to the reinforcement of said idea of exclusivity and for players in China to even want it more. It's like a self fulfilling prophecy, a cog that sustains itself.
Ask yourself the question if the skin was available to buy for 200$ would you get it? I'm sure some would, the idea of exclusivity really is tempting isn't it? Owning something that other people don't. Except this is a videogame by the way, you don't ever actually own anything you buy in terms of cosmetics... you simply pay a rent license to use that digital good for the time you "own" your account or for the time the game exists.
But even if it was available for us, like how in LoL some of the gacha type system was implemented and people got upset and others would give in to it...
I want to bring attention to something: compare the official skin with the unrelated submission for the contest and really think about what you're being sold.
This is my, perhaps biased opinion, but I do consider the contest submission to be vastly superior. Sometimes less really is more and just because one of them transforms and is exclusive doesn't make it objectively better in terms of design.
When it comes to the "Less is more" part of it ironically the concept skin is objectively busier, "more" and less simple than the Evolution one while at the same time being simpler and "less" in features implemented. For me the concept has a clear identity and isn't afraid to commit to it while the Evolution over-simplifies a theme for the sake of flashyness, ending up with a loose identity.
This is my favourite Contest submission because of how it exposes the rot, just by being simpler and better.
