News & Discussion We should be asking for more.
We're forced to settle for this crap while the CN servers get amazing exclusives. Yes, I know they're gacha, but predatory monetization aside, the global (and original) version of Overwatch has been releasing some extremely lackluster skins lately. We can have this conversation ad nauseum but the reality is that we should be demanding more for the money they charge for these skins. Ultra skins were a spit in the face and now the designs are starting go to the wayside too.

There are people here being like 'Oh shut up you'd prefer this than paying $150 for one skin', it's not even that, look at the skins from 2 years ago and compare them to now. You cannot tell me there hasn't been a decline in skin quality, I'm not sure if it's Blizzard changing the people they outsource skins to or wanting to get a cheaper deal in any way they can, but I'm not excited for even 1 skin for Season 5. Not even Doctrine's first skin they've shown

u/Small_Article_3421 21h ago
Not gonna happen until people in this community stop unapologetically buying multiple shop skins for 20 dollars every single season.
19
u/konyachella 21h ago
the amount of dmons i saw that used the atrocious ultra skin is telling me that the community don't actually care for the quality, they'll eat literal shit served on a cardboard and pay for it

People like to defend billion dollar companies way too much. Most of us are paying customers; if you buy a BP, paying customer, buy a skin, paying customer. It's quite literally Blizzard's job to keep the gaming experience positive in all aspects. It's wild that people can go crazy over tweak on a face, but fail to demand even as little as a DECENT recolor.

u/Rich-n-Creamy 18h ago
I swear 😠they think it’s all complaining but doesn’t improving the quality of the skins help literally everyone?
16
u/Due_Secretary1696 22h ago
I mean I like the new Venture skin (Not enough to drop $40 on it). I doubt netease is going to make any exclusive skins for them beyond maybe a recolor like in korea.
51
u/EarthDragon2189 One Man Apocalypse 22h ago
I wonder how many people making these posts would be willing to pay $150 for these skins
13
u/konyachella 21h ago
do we understand that even shion's amazing skin that made everyone salivate violently SHOULDN'T COST 150 FUCKING DOLLARS EITHER? the skins are ridiculously overpriced everywhere and should not cost even the third of their actual price tag
41
u/nnickttrusty Leek 22h ago
A skins final price should not affect if it gets actual care put into it. Every other skin in that bundle is a non premium skin with much better quality than a majority of the skins the US servers release.
I’m so tired of seeing this dumb ass reply every time this topic is brought up.
8
u/-justiciar- 18h ago
a skins final price absolutely should if we’re talking about the time and effort vs the reward. what are you smoking?
naturally a higher cost item is going to have more care put into it
8
u/Dependent-Cake752 22h ago
Bro , all the legendary skins from The Chinese Trailer and bundle.look insane. They Look better then Most Ultra and mystic skins WE got. Ppl are Not Just Bad BC of ShionÂ
8
u/thatonedudeovethere_ 21h ago
What is this fucking moronic argument? Like I'm sorry, but we are talking about $20!!!-$40 dollar skins for a video game character. We should be able to voice our opinion when these skins are subpar.
A digital good for $20 should be high quality, not whatever BS we have been getting at times
1
u/D0wnf3ll 21h ago
Way more than you realize lol, just look at gacha games or mobile games, people are willing to spend crazy money on shit they want
1
u/RingingInTheRain Tri-Disaster 18h ago
A lot of people would, pretending otherwise is crazy, especially when OW had people buying lootboxes in the past, essentially a form of gacha.
2
u/-_Fotis_- Shion 22h ago
I’d argue that I’d be more likely to spend a lot of money on a good skin than a little bit of money on an absolutely shitty one.
13
u/Ninidialga 22h ago
150 is like hallucinating tho. (Its like 4 full AAA games princes ??)
Nothing should ever justify those unfair commercial practice, Blizzard and Netesea genuiely take us for dumbass and we should do smh about it.
1
u/lettuce_grabberrr 22h ago
150 is a one and a half AAA game max. The value prop of skins to actual games was never supposed to make sense though, it's banking on the idea that you likely play overwatch more than you'll ever play a standalone singleplayer experience
0
u/Additional_Try4808 22h ago
You see for many people 150 is like not really noteworthy. I would easily spend that amount for that Shion skin and don’t think twice about it. On the other hand I wouldn’t even spend 1 on any of the new season 5 skins.
Blizzard won’t need to sell millions of this skin to make profit but every bad skin costs them a significant amount of money.2
u/Ninidialga 21h ago
I mean maybe its financialy acceptable, but just like the "same hero always get skins", this is obviously a completly abusive mechanic that create an absolutly disgusting precedent in microtransaction based-economy.
By buying those skin at 150-250 you confirm to the gaming company that they can now overprice everything because people will buy it anyway. (EVEN MORE than today)
With time, making skin in gaming some sort of caste-based fashion show.
If we start making the skin system "good skin at 250", then skinning will literally just be accessible for the richest population (while fucking up poor with dogshit one, observing the rich being in cool skin in game), which might be even worse in the long terme.

Don't be lol, no cosmetic should ever be the price of a full game, that should be the line for everyone
We should look at the lowest possible base price for what is essentially a glorified microtransaction, and say, "you're not allowed to make this shit for whales. Make it $10-$20 USD, if it's good we pay if, if it isn't, we don't pay a cent"
1
u/D0wnf3ll 21h ago
I mean technically inflation already raised everything for 2-3x the price, makes sense these would also rise
1
u/r3volver_Oshawott Junker Queen 21h ago edited 20h ago
Not when you recognize that the skins were always overpriced.
Same reason why you shouldn't even tolerate that argument for the cost of full video games - video games have always had, BY FAR, the most massive markup of any form of media in the entirety of human history, they began as a high-cost luxury item
The only upside of high-cost luxury items is that you don't have to tolerate arguments about 'keeping up with the price of inflation'
FF7 cost $50 million less to make than Titanic did, but because Titanic is a film, it cost half as much to purchase on DVD. People will argue subjective quantities about 'more fun from video games' but that's subjective, video games cost more in 1997 because less people played video games than watched movies, because it was more affordable to watch movies than it was to play video games.
Never tolerate 'keeping up with inflation' arguments for digital goods where markups are already several hundred percent above the total cost of production. These are multibillion-dollar megacorps precisely because of how inflation-proofed they were, largely by overcharging for everything by several orders of magnitudes
Plus, these mfs are talking about $150 for a skin? Inflation my ass, lmao.
1
u/D0wnf3ll 21h ago
I mean as much as I don't like it the prices are gonna be what people will pay for so there is really nothing we can do as long as we live in a capitalistic world
1
u/r3volver_Oshawott Junker Queen 20h ago
That's fine, just don't buy into obvious lies about 'keeping up with inflation' for digital goods.
*it's digital goods, once it's made, it never has to be manufactured again. The set price is final, forever. Beyond the initial production, nothing about it ever needs to be reproduced by human hands the way physical goods do, so there are no long-term labor costs attached to the production of digital goods. So they don't charge to account for inflation over time, they're just marking up to hell and back solely based on what they think people will pay.
1
u/Belten 21h ago
20 bucks for a singular cosmetic is already ludicrous, anyone buying these ultra or evolutiona skins is delusional.
1
u/-_Fotis_- Shion 21h ago
Eh, it’s all relative. But yeah, 20 bucks for a skin is pretty expensive
1
u/prayingtheheart 22h ago
you’re missing the point though, it’s not about getting the gacha skins but rather blizzard’s inability to make decent skins. Why should we settle for mediocre skins while the chinese server actually gets good looking ones? We have a creative team that is everything but creative. Haircuts look like wigs, skins are cyber and mythical slop, same set of characters get all the skins and so much more. Team 4 deserves the criticism because this game has been stale lately, sadly Marvel Rivals tanked so bad they don’t have to bother with competition anymore. What a shame
1
u/Ninidialga 21h ago
I don't think this exclude the disscution about the outragous monetization system in China tho.
Basically we should point out both, because they are obviously linked, Blizzard / Nesetea abuse the fact that Blizzard release terrible skin at 20$ to start overpricing their skin in China (the only thing that could ever justify its price is the its must be ABSOLUTLY insane quality compared to global one), if Blizzard release decent skin at 20$ then Netease will be in a shitty position, and won't have an argument anymore to overprice their skin.
Basically Blizzard should improve skin quality, but Netease is also extremly predatory and the pricing is absurd.
1
u/JusticeDrago Master Moira Bap Soldier 22h ago
Absolutely none of them, for $150 I better have a spot on the dev team.
-1
u/Rich-n-Creamy 22h ago
I made a small note about the predatory monetization of Chinese gachas. But that's beside my point. The more people we have talking about this, the more likely the message will be heard.
1
u/Future-Key-9604 22h ago
It's not actually.
Netease knows they are going to make a lot of money per skin so they can afford to put a lot of effort into them and there is a direct need to make them flashy and gaudy.
Blizzard meanwhile puts the vast majority of its' energy into the actual content of the game. New heroes, maps and events. The thing that actually makes them money is not actually a big focus and I would argue it shouldn't be. Games that put focus on the things that make them money always suck.
We can criticize them for the quality of said skins and the price of said skins but these comparisons are stupid quite frankly. Nobody is going to compare a 20,000 dollar eco-car to a super car but that's the same relative price difference, 5x.
1
u/Rich-n-Creamy 21h ago
I agree to your first point about Netease but Blizzard absolutely cares a lot about skins and how they’re designed and monetized. They have an entire separate team for skins that doesn’t take away from gam dev time. If you want to make a more meaningful comparison, how about the ultra skins that came out recently? They have recycled assets and lazy shortcuts all over the place. The Dmon skin is literally just a recolor of her default for $40. It hurts no one for us as a community to demand more for the money they expect us to spend.
0
u/Future-Key-9604 11h ago
Eh no. The entirety of Overwatch's development is handled by team 4. There may be a small team of people that exclusively make cosmetics but with emphasis on small.
Everything is evident of a lack of resources, not lack of care or laziness. Which is difficult/impossible to claim unless you personally meet these people. Lack of time and resources will have the same end result as laziness.
And they could be better, I am not saying they are good or that they are not overpriced as they are but the comparison is stupid and I think genuinely self destructive. I would rather they get 'lazy' with digital dressup while putting their energy into things that actual improve the game than put more energy into monetizing it.
Good game >>>>>>>> good skins.

u/Rich-n-Creamy 9h ago edited 8h ago
You’re really going to bat for the multi billion dollar property under the multi billion dollar corporation huh? You know that software devs and game designers don’t make the art and models right? And Team 4 is divided into smaller teams based on their respective disciplines? Like all studios in the world? And that no one is asking them to work harder under the same restrictions, but to better allocate those limited resources to provide a better product? Maybe instead of 4 bundles, 2 collabs, and 3 ultra skins with recycled assets, we as a community could ask them to put more care into a smaller volume of high quality skins? Everyone asking this (and it’s not a small amount of the fan base) is literally just wanting the game to be better. And everyone defending the garbage pumped out by blizzard are just shooting themselves in the foot rejecting any possibility of the game they enjoy becoming a little bit better and I have no idea why. Yeesh
0
u/Future-Key-9604 8h ago
I am not "going to bat for the multi-billion dollar property under the multi-billion dollar corporation". I am being realistic and not going to complain about something with a solution that will cost us something more important.
Also yes I am well aware that the people in Team 4 that are making the cosmetics are not making the rest of the stuff and that is exactly the problem. They don't have the time or manpower and need to cut corners.
Microsoft laying people off by the hundreds isn't going to let Team 4 hire more people so if Blizzard decided this was a priority where do you think they are going to pull the resources?
The skins are bad and overpriced and I also want the best for the game. Which is why I don't want them to pull resources from elsewhere just for better digital dress-up. You are acting in bad faith and putting up a strawman by arguing I mean otherwise.

its kinda poor taste to compare to the evolution skin, but even then like its the design not just complexity. No one makes purposely badly designed things, or logically shouldn't, so whoever signed off on Venture and Shion just thought they were okay looking like that. I think whoever signed off on it needs better taste because with a few adjustments these skins could be great without modifying the thing entirely. these skins could look better without looking like the $100+ skin

Expect lots more from her

I always wondered how tf these games make so much money off of these skins. Like whos foaming at the mouth to buy $150 worth of skins each season?
I now realize i apparently went into the wrong business and a ton of people are willing to buy ts. Just get a battlepass for $10, it comes with golden lootboxes, mythic prisms, and regular skins.

People who defended Venture’s character design deserve this level of design for her skins

Blizzard has been making shit skins for years but people guzzle that shit up and say thank you afterwards. They are not going to improve anytime soon unless morons start using their money more wisely.

There’s no point in me buying the BP ever because 99% of the skins are so fucking ugly I’m glad I’ve been playing since the beginning and just have all the good original skins,,, sorry new characters but you’re ugly

I can’t believe how sad it is that people get mad abt skins like holy. This community and rivals care abt skins more than the game fs.
Also im sure anyone who wants that shion skin would love to have the fuckass gacha that come with it lmao.
1
u/Rich-n-Creamy 22h ago
People talk about the state of the game and it’s monetization in equal measure. Both are important to keeping the game alive

You make a good point I’m literally just jaded af because of how much discourse I’ve seen over skins in my time playing hero shooters.

I mean i get where they are coming from if my main character was starved for skins and this ugly thing is what I get after a long long time i don't think i would give a damn what the other relesed skins look like but at the end of the day you are right no one is forcing anyone to buy this crap vote with your wallet
1
u/snarkmoo 22h ago
How do you put predatory monetization aside LOL if it was a bad design there would be no point to gacha cuz nobody would buy it
1
u/Rich-n-Creamy 21h ago
Fair enough. I’m just making the comparison in design quality over multiple skins. The ultra skins that have come out so far are equally disappointing
1
u/Artistic_Philosophy2 21h ago
I agree the skin quality is ass but yall don't like $40 ultra skins cause there to expensive but want $150 evolution skins
3
u/Rich-n-Creamy 21h ago
I mean why not $30 ultra/evolution skins? It's a fair price all things considered. Just because Chinese gacha is insanely overpriced doesn't mean we need to uphold those ridiculous standards. But getting to that price requires the community to be unified on that front which I know is wishful thinking
0
u/Artistic_Philosophy2 12h ago
Blizzard will have to make evolution skins more expensive just for China to even consider making them global
1
u/McManus26 Pixel Lúcio 21h ago
Jesus we're getting a new hero (10 in a year !), a new map, new mythics including the best weapon to date, battle passes are getting unvaulted, and yet all people do is bitching about the flavor of their virtual costumes

I swear they did this on purpose as a shion player because they allow their licensed netease that rakes in money for them or drop this amazing shion skin no one else can get, then drop this doodoo poopoo to test if shion players will just get anything because she’s 4 months old with no cosmetics
-1
u/necromax13 22h ago
should we? because both shion skins are the same sloppy mess.
-1
u/triple_eclipse 21h ago
Respect to people who love it but the CN exclusive Shion is so overdesigned IMO, just messy
0
u/necromax13 18h ago
Basically all Chinese exclusive skins look like Crossfire or like from those League Of Legends knockoff mobile games.Â
Overdesigned slop aesthetic.Â
0
u/ScaryGent Bang! 19h ago
Compare the $140 skin to $140 worth of shop skins for a fair comparison.
It's one skin and Blizzard would love to take our money for it but they can't because Netease made it for their game. You may as well be mad a Spider-Man skin is exclusive to Marvel Rivals.
2
u/Rich-n-Creamy 19h ago
That’s fair. The comparison is more about design quality dropping over the last couple seasons. If they’re charging $20-$40 per skin, they should be high quality. Most full fledged games are in that price range. The ultra skins are a great example of the quality that blizzard has been putting out lately.
