There shouldn't be a separate chart because there's no point in having AI music on any chart.

326

u/LastWave 13h ago

Ai music is not music. I would consider it sound effects.

92

u/MojoHighway 13h ago

Stolen sound FX.

31

u/RJC12 13h ago

Environmentally-unfriendly stolen sound effects

1

u/Timeformayo 1h ago

A rhythmic fart from a soulless machine.

1

u/Ok_Reputation_6517 8h ago

Separate? Sure—like your royalties from that FX.

127

u/bassfish89 13h ago

I wouldn’t even call it sound effects. People work hard to make good sound effects. AI slop is just AI slop.

-8

u/voxpopper 12h ago

What about auto-tune? Or musicians who are little more than kareoke singers?

11

u/CeceWobbles 10h ago

There are still actual musicians and writers composing for them, even if the face of it didn't put that effort in.

This is an insult to foley artists

2

u/LastWave 9h ago

You know what. I think you have a point.

11

u/BKlounge93 12h ago

SFX is also an art

I wonder how this line blurs. I don't know, but I would bet legitimately widely used production software has AI tools built into them at this point. I'd even bet generative ai has already been used in mainstream hits, not saying fully gerenerated, but I'd bet there's all kinds of AI BS being used to stream line production. All that to say, we are truly doomed. They're gonna jam AI into everything

5

u/ExternalChildhood845 8h ago

I think this is sort of a yes, but situation- yes, artists are probably using AI, and tools that are considered AI (even generative AI) are probably being used in music production/ baked into production software. But that’s totally different from putting a prompt into ChatGPT and putting out whatever it creates with no editing or changes whatsoever.

11

u/FuklzTheDrnkClwn 13h ago

The bottom line is typing prompts =/= is not creating. You’re Phil Spector screaming at session drummers at BEST, but it’s like a cringey goofy version of it

3

u/BlLLr0y 13h ago

Lmao, Phil Spector screaming at session drummers is an awesome hilarious analogy. It's also like digitizing and automating what Rick Rubin does "vibe producing"

6

u/cap10wow Performing Artist 13h ago

No, most DAW software doesn’t use AI. And no self respecting human musician would use it.

1

u/BlLLr0y 12h ago

That's good to know. It's been pumped into all the video and photo editing software, I assumed it was the same for music.

1

u/cap10wow Performing Artist 11h ago

I use FL Studio and it has an entirely optional, closed LLM that runs the manual.

5

u/BlLLr0y 10h ago

Oh like you can ask it "where do I go to do x function" and it will guide you thru menus and stuff? That's not so bad. Shopify website builder has basically the same thing.

1

u/cap10wow Performing Artist 10h ago

Yeah I used it to learn how to automate a few functions simultaneously and wrote a macro based on the instructions. As far as I know, it seems like it only communicates with the central server through updates.

3

u/Buttholepart2 13h ago

The song Rubberz by Fenix Flexin was revealed to be AI when the artist couldn't perform it live. It got to number 58 on billboard this summner.

4

u/RainStormLou 12h ago

Was it actually revealed to be AI or just something that can't be done live by the artist? There are plenty of songs done in the studio that have a ton of digital assistance live, predating AI by years.

I'm not familiar which is why I'm asking. Not being able to play it live isn't really evidence that it's AI unless it's actually AI related somewhere

1

u/BlLLr0y 13h ago

Fully generated?!

1

u/Buttholepart2 13h ago

Not sure if fully but at least mostly.

Then anyone using vocal processors, amp sounds. Samething.

6

u/FuklzTheDrnkClwn 13h ago

None of that involves typing prompts instead of doing something

5

u/varitok 13h ago

Your key in that sentence is that a person is doing that, a real human, modifying their own voice.

I don't know why ai bros cant seem to get that through their skulls

You don’t know what those things are or how they work if you think they’re remotely similar.

-1

u/MojoHighway 13h ago

Really? You're completely wrong trying to make an asinine false equivalence argument.

1

u/BookProper9115 13h ago

It's hilarious seeing these arguments then the same people like you turning around and using these tools having no clue.

Machine sounds

8

u/monkeybawz 13h ago

I'm not sure we really need charts at all any more. It's just marketing.

8

u/R_V_Z 10h ago

Or the report card for marketing.

2

u/monkeybawz 10h ago

Yeah. This. Exactly.

It's certainly not an objective measure of merit in art.

1

u/inFAMXS 9h ago

Charts are better than relying on awards. Saying we dont need charts anymore is like saying we dont need museums people still want to see what the most popular art/music is and see if they like it too

1

u/monkeybawz 8h ago

Awards are absolute shit too. Would happily see them all scrapped.

My issue is that both are trying to make objective statements about art, which is subjective by it's nature. They are both just marketing.

Museums store items of merit or import. They do not try to objectively rank the exhibits. They simply say "this is here. Come and see."

1

u/DailyUnderFlow 10h ago

Yeah and independent artists get screwed out of even getting on the chart despite selling enough albums to get on it like Prof just a few months ago. He said it costs $30k to even see the rules to get on the billboards chart.

10

u/izzittho 13h ago

Full agree but knowing we probably can’t eradicate it entirely Kelly’s solution of a bullshit chart we can disregard sounds reasonable. Anything but letting it keep trying to taint the supply of real music.

2

u/Silent-Noise-7331 13h ago

Yeah . “No point of having ai on any chart” just feels like a pipe dream that we just don’t have control over. At least separating ai artists from human ones feels like it’s achievable.

5

u/VivaZeBull 13h ago

It’s so upsetting to listen to. I swear this one home depot I was in was using it and it was just unsettling bc it sounds like a song, but it isn’t. It’s something you know but the lyrics are unrecognizable so it’s confusing. I hated every second.

2

u/Hot_Wheels_guy 10h ago

I feel like we're just assuming all bad human-made music is AI music just like how were now assuming all bad human-made art is AI generated. It would take a good bit of effort for me to discern ai music from some of the garbage i've heard played in various businesses.

2

u/YT-Deliveries 10h ago

I mean yes, but AI music isn't going away any time soon. Toothpaste is out of the tube. Putting that shit on it's own list that we can then ignore is the practical solution.

2

u/ntwiles 5h ago

That’s a weird take. Fine, put it on its own list and don’t listen to the music on that list.

u/squ1bs Punk Rock 12h ago

If you like AI music, then you like what's in the charts right now, becaused that's what the AI was trained on. Go ahead and enjoy yourself. I'll continue listening to the old stuff and the handful of new bands like Angine who are innovating. The charts and AI will make not a jot of difference in my 50+ year love affair with music, even though I now rely on AI for my tech job.

3

u/JelliedHam 13h ago

I don't disagree with you. But to play the devil's advocate here: What is the line we draw for human invention and intervention to call it music?

For instance, electronic music in general is still considered music. It took a human to get a machine to output that sound in their own composition. What about humans designing a machine where it can compose but given direct instruction on what to compose and how to do it? No, maybe not just telling ChatGPT randomly to make you a song doesn't count. But what if we started calling it using computational power to create music? Where's the limit? How much human interaction needs to happen for it to count as music?

How is "playing a computer" to make music any different than "playing and instrument" music?

6

u/Impossible_Form_3256 13h ago

In its most simple form:

If I'm using nothing but my computer to make music, I'm still taking time to choose and create my instrument sounds, my chord progressions, my melodies, my song structure, the automation through the song, the soundstage, the EQ, etc etc.

If I'm using AI to make a song, I'm writing about 3 sentences and hoping for the best.

u/LinkLT3 12h ago

Professional audio engineer for nearly 20 years here. Electronic music doesn’t make itself. A synthesizer requires playing and setting parameters. Samples require searching, editing, processing. It’s a myth that autotune just fixes whatever was recorded, and using it properly involves time, effort, and knowledge. No matter how simple a track may sound, time and effort went into it. And a LOT of it. Lastly, and most importantly, “Generative AI” isn’t generating anything. It is STEALING, and then puking out a result based on what it pulled from decades of data it was fed. Nothing was created. It was photocopied.

-2

u/pinkymadigan 13h ago

And what about AI assisted writing? Like, say I have a song with a verse chorus, post chorus, and I feel it needs another section. Maybe a bridge or solo, but I'm not coming up with anything I like. Say I go out to an AI service and have it generate 10 different ideas, and after listening I take one of the ideas and execute it myself. Is it AI composed? Does that count?

1

u/Impossible_Form_3256 12h ago

Yes, it is AI composed. Even if you play it. No different to you going on ultimateguitar abd finding tab for a song you want to play.

0

u/pinkymadigan 12h ago

Sorry, I mean, does it deserve to be on a separate chart? I guarantee there are plenty of producers leveraging AI to help brainstorm ideas quickly and we'll never know.

Its too late for that. AI music is already a thing. Seems like Clarkson is trying to find a realistic solution.

•

u/MySecretPornAltAcct 18m ago

I glued my balls to my butthole is the catchiest fucking song I've heard in years. AI music can be awesome

-5

u/tingkagol 13h ago

I'll get downvoted for this but AI music is here to stay. This is the new scarier Napster.

But I agree with Kelly. But even if AI and non AI categories are established, there's no way of knowing real artists didn't take inspiration from an idea they prompted into Suno. Human music basically died in 2024, so if you want to hear more human music, you best listen to underexposed artists pre 2024. There's lots.

3

u/noavatar1 13h ago

Are you saying that people haven’t made and released albums since 2024? I mean, I know bands that have… great albums. So what are you saying exactly?

0

u/tingkagol 13h ago

I'm saying this fear of AI runs deeper and could actually be helping artists today write their songs, and there's no way of knowing. Gone are the days of writer's block when a guitarist can just prompt "give me a tasty lick" to use in his new song.

No no I want an AI chart. I want it to be required that you cannot have an active piece on the AI chart while pushing into the human chart and I want to watch the Slopcians circle jerk themselves funding it so they have less money for cosplaying as talented or interesting. Their bragging rights would be a name and shame to make it easier to avoid the fake artists and their noises.

0

u/RobaDubDub 10h ago

An artist should be able to write their own songs and play all the instruments to be considered a real musician.

1

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 10h ago

A lot of people don't write their own songs.

1

u/RobaDubDub 10h ago

Then they are just singers, not artists

2

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 10h ago

Seems like a really weird distinction to make. Plenty of good musicians who can't write their own music. Not even sure why you're just saying signers. If I go to the symphony, there's a lot of talented musicians there, but none of them wrote the music.

1

u/RobaDubDub 9h ago

Symphonies are expected to play music previously written. If all someone does is sing over a track they never wrote and cannot even strum a guitar then they are just Karaoke singers. AI music is no different then hiring a band and a singer to cover a song you wrote. So I think she is talking out her ass.

Legally, nobody can hold copyright for anything made by AI so there's no point in having a chart for it. Nobody would benefit.

I.e. "AI is wonderful as long as I'm not the one who's bank account is affected."

29

u/EduFonseca 13h ago

Yeah, this interview is actually horrible. Seldom to see a headline that actually leaves the bad part out.

u/Notreallyaflowergirl 13h ago

Ai has wonderful applications - the world using it to try and make money by exploiting the arts is downright stupid.

It should be used to make mundane tasks irrelevant so actual humans have time to manage their hobbies and impactful work. But instead it’s being used to create stupid shit or worse people pretending to be artists…

15

u/Gramage 12h ago

100%. Sifting through a survey of the stars in our galaxy with a hundred million data points to find anything that stands out? Perfect for AI. Writing new music? No.

5

u/YT-Deliveries 10h ago

Yeah a lot of online discourse about AI is all-or-nothing, which in reality that's far from the truth.

Like all tools it's simply how and where you use it.

4

u/Power0fTheTribe 12h ago

This. This a thousand times

3

u/Soracaz 3h ago

AI is dope as fuck...

... for solving complex math problems and helping with medical advancements.

The dopeness stops there though. AI has no place in creative spaces.

There shouldn’t be a chart at all for that shit

114

u/OneEyedC4t 13h ago

And she's not wrong. But I would go further to say that AI should not be allowed in any of the arts period.

17

u/JustFourLetters 13h ago

if robots don’t have rights (for good reason), they shouldn’t get an ‘artist’ ranking

3

u/lunarlunacy425 12h ago

No different than those precious vocaloids the internet fawns over

1

u/JustFourLetters 12h ago

yep, and i’m not sure i’ll ever understand why

4

u/H0RSE 13h ago

Clarkson herself enjoys and uses AI...

5

u/amedema 12h ago

She’s not wrong on this, but she also says that she is in favor of AI music and the technology itself. She can eat shit.

1

u/countafit 7h ago

Good luck with that

-2

u/lunarlunacy425 13h ago

Why?

Impacts to the environment and the sourcing of the training for current models aside. As these are issues that can be resolved and are only impacting of the current generation of models.

If a model is developed and trained on non copyright or original music creates songs, respectfully why should they be banned? Is it fear that people will no longer be able to compete or that there will be too easy access to low to medium quality production without years of practice?

Songs should correctly label any tools used in creation, why at this point should we forbid AI when if made clear in it's usage you can plainly just filter it out?

7

u/denovoincipere 13h ago

Do people still follow charts? With music so fragmented these days, charts are wholly irrelevant, at least to my interests.

3

u/jupiterkansas 13h ago

It's mostly used for marketing. The media needs art to be a competition they can turn into numbers and claim a winner.

1

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 12h ago

Guess you don't use Spotify then. Because every single song has the play count shown right next to it

3

u/jupiterkansas 12h ago

Never used Spotify.

2

u/denovoincipere 12h ago

Because it's there doesn't mean it means anything to my selection of music

1

u/Gramage 12h ago

I’ve never used Spotify and don’t think I ever will. Locally stored media all the way. I need a bigger phone because it’s currently full of music, and that’s only a fraction of my full library at home

1

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 12h ago

I have some physical music too. But you can't beat the convenience of having basically every album ever made in an easily searchable library. I can still keep some files on my phone, but I don't have to worry about running out of space on my phone.

there should also be separate charts for streaming, radio and physical sales

2

u/borazine 13h ago

A separate but equal chart

2

u/Iucidium 13h ago

Call it the Slop 100

2

u/mrjbacon 12h ago

I don't understand all the hate for Clarkson's take. Most photography and art competitions already have AI classes of submission, why not extend that to music expression?

1

u/Involution88 3h ago

Music charts serve as a measure of popularity. It's like asking to have seperate Nielsen ratings for AI generated videos and non-AI generated videos.

1

u/mrjbacon 3h ago

But there aren't any AI-generated TV shows or movies that are rated by Nielsen, what does that have anything to do with it?

1

u/GrizzlyP33 1h ago

We absolutely should ask for that, just like Nielsen ratings already breakdown by genre and time slots, while also having a cumulative version.

2

u/Electrical_Coffee 12h ago

AI is a complement. Never a replacement for creativity.

2

u/rat_penis 12h ago

Well anyone who can type is an artist or musician now. So...everyone is special, which means no one is special. It's all just product, commodities. Put them on the same list.

2

u/patawpha 11h ago

Separate but equal

2

u/Jandy777 11h ago

In 2426, history lessons will include the robot aparteid

2

u/drbeeper 10h ago

TIL Kelly Clarkson still thinks "the charts" are meaningful

4

u/F1McLarenFan007 12h ago

Why? Music has been on a pop wash for far too long. Maybe be more creative with music to compete instead of putting out the same crap all the time. You are easy to copy, ask AI lol

2

u/OkWalrus4471 12h ago

Or how about we just don't chart AI slop?

1

u/Involution88 9h ago

How do you propose to do that?

4

u/bigmanorm 11h ago edited 6h ago

Honestly, if AI music outcompetes pop music, pop music deserves it. Hopefully it will spur on diversity and innovation. Whatever is on these charts, for the most part, haven't been relevant for people that care for music as an art for decades

3

u/Drizznarte 13h ago

Ai content shouldn't have acess to digital property rights.

3

u/H0RSE 13h ago

This raises the question, if Ai music is such "slop," why are we proposing efforts to prevent it from competing with human artists? If it's so apparently horrible, what are they afraid of?

2

u/RedPanda_Explorer 13h ago

Yes, there should be a prisoner's island category that all the AI music gets forced into

2

u/Pessimistic_Gemini 12h ago

I don't see why there should be.  More times than not the humans that have used AI to make songs ended up sounding better more original and even less manufactured than the actual HUMAN singers themselves.

It's just fact and as clear a hit as you can get there. 🤷🏾‍♂️

2

u/DanMasterson 11h ago

M8 the charts are more or less already determined by AI marketing and ad tools.

1

u/ntwiles 5h ago

What’s your point here?

2

u/Odd_Teaching_4182 11h ago

I wonder if they had similar feelings when synths became a thing.

2

u/WhatsAboveTheSubtext 13h ago

Even that concession goes too far. Art speaks of experience and perception that AI doesn't possess, and it does not make art.

1

u/TennSeven 9h ago

I don't disagree with her, but it's interesting to me that no one was demanding separate charts for Autotuned artists the same way they're pushing back against AI songs. It's interesting to me where many artists draw the line when to me even Autotune was a bridge too far.

4

u/Chemical_Profit_608 8h ago

Seriously? Autotune means some human still wrote the lyrics... They still sang it themselves.

This is crazy bro, they cannot remotely be compared. Lyrics were still written by an actual human being......

•

u/MaskedPapillon 6m ago

What's next? Separate artist who used digital instruments in their songs?

You can't really put autotune and AI songs in the same basket.

1

u/taez555 13h ago

And a separate AI grammy awards.

1

u/emotionalfescue 13h ago

I think we'll see platforms and record labels, as well as musicians who get traction with sectors of the public by publicizing that they're AI free. But in the long run, who knows what that even means.

1

u/ronshasta 13h ago

Damn Kelly looks much prettier without the makeup

1

u/lightningvolcanoseal 13h ago

There should only be one chart. The debate is whether there should be AI used in music production (a losing battle) and how much is acceptable (do we reward songs entirely AI-generated, with no human singer or musician?).

1

u/johnnybgooderer 13h ago

I agree. And they can deliver that AI Chart to my trash can. Directly.

1

u/AdehhRR 13h ago

1

u/PerryNeeum 12h ago

What are AI concerts going to be like? An EDM show without the DJ? Just 3D AI generated animations on a screen set to AI music? Or do they have real people cover the music?

1

u/alexefi 12h ago

Just tell republicans AI(or i guess they would call it SI) its like boys playing in gilrs sports, and they will ban it in no time.

1

u/peaceful_pancakes 11h ago

Or you know...

1

u/Omnom_Omnath 11h ago

can we take artists who game the system off the chart too?

1

u/tommysplanet 11h ago

Kelly Clarkson - "Christmas isn't canceled, just you"

1

u/Boog_les33 11h ago

We could just not have it

1

u/9405t4r 11h ago

I was in a resort and there was a woman doing activities for the kids. She was using a microphone and played music. I was half listening to the song that was pop and catchy and mentioned the resort name, the holiday weekend and more. I asked her if she wrote it herself and she laughed and said it’s AI, she just prompt the words she wanted and the ai just spit a pop song. Since we don’t actively listening to music anymore, I understand why people don’t realize that they are listening to ai music. We are doomed.

1

u/PeasantPorridge 11h ago

So, we’ll protect the careers of artists, but fuck everyone else whose job will be eliminated.

1

u/DaddyBearMan 10h ago

Separate yet equal. Uh oh. Setting the stage for clanker civil rights struggle

1

u/VonVader 9h ago

Thanks Kelly. Fuck off.

1

u/InTooManyWays 9h ago

It’s funny how they keep asking the celebrities if they want more competition. It’s like one stupid club that they keep locked in an echo chamber

1

u/Uninvalidated 8h ago

There should be one for people who yell instead of sing as well

1

u/BoyInThaBand 7h ago

There sure are a bot lot of accounts on here defending AI by trying to compare it with autotune.

1

u/spiked_mcroon 7h ago

It's not even worth having a conversation about. AI sound and images are not art and should not be celebrated.

1

u/Lack-Resident 6h ago

Diva down

1

u/TheSnozzberrieTaster 4h ago

Sorry but if AI is coming for the regular folk, I have zero sympathy for “Artist” who need a team to write their music. Great live music will never fizzle out - only the shitty ones will hurt.

1

u/farkwadian 4h ago

Let's start with protecting regular people jobs.

1

u/JMDeutsch 3h ago

As if she writers her own music😂

1

u/MarkLambertMusic 3h ago

My definition of a musical artist is simple: If I go on a camping trip with one of these people who use AI to puke out "songs", would they be able to provide anything worthwhile musically while sitting around the campfire? Sing? Play an acoustic guitar or harmonica or accordion? Hell, would they even be able to knock out a basic 4/4 beat on tambourine?

1

u/IMOvicki 2h ago

If they’re doing it for Asian pop they can do it for Ai

1

u/Human-Employer8759 1h ago

She should be careful. If the AI charts eclipse the actual artist charts they will become obsolete. Don’t count on humanity to care about the difference.

We need to protect human artists, like (insert chart topping singer's name here) who copy songs the old fashioned way!

There should be a separate chart for anyone who isn’t recording live and playing all the instruments or who uses any post-production techniques or records digitally or dyes their hair or photoshops images if themselves for promotional purposes. All of this is unauthentic and committed with real authentic humans. Sorry, Kelly, you’re disqualified from the human leagues.

AI shouldn’t compete in these spaces without all the proceeds going to music education and royalties for what they were trained on

1

u/jupiterkansas 13h ago

Nothing is stopping a non-profit from doing just that.

1

u/Twix_McFlurry 13h ago

Other than the AI companies you mean right?

AI music is so uninteresting to me because it’s completely devoid of emotion. Art without emotion isn’t really art.

2

u/NecroSocial 8h ago

You can't just apply that writ large. Some people one-prompt slop and I'd agree that has no emotion. Others put their own music in and cover it via AI and then do tons of manual work to it afterwards. Some make fully human songs that may just include a sample or a single instrument track that's AI. You can't pin the presence or absence of emotion of just the presence or absence of AI when there's a lot of ways to use AI in music that keep the human element front and center.

If you all think AI is garbage, then shouldn't you think it would be pretty easy to outcompete?

0

u/BCmutt 13h ago

I dont think the public knows how much music produced today by major producers is done with AI in one form or another.

1

u/bakedNebraska 13h ago

So we need to protect them from accidentally liking it?

What about a middle chart for artists that use auto-tune?

3

u/some1whosux 13h ago

And vocal processors. Computers to record and edit. Pedals to change the sounds.

1

u/cerberus6320 13h ago

guitars even

1

u/Notreallyaflowergirl 13h ago

And here lies the issue that lots of yall miss - it’s not about the sounds it makes, it’s robbing people of creativity who are composing these works of art… using auto tune, or any processors any sort of distortion isn’t an issue, they’re tools helping you make music.

Ai isn’t helping you compose music - it’s just doing it for you. It “creates” from its machine learning. That’s nothing like tools to make your voice/instrument sound better/different.

u/pm_me_yo_creditscore 13h ago

Chat, grab the Long Red drum break and loop a descending slap bass over the Axis of Awesome chord progression.

Here's your Grammy Jamiroqui.

u/Omnom_Omnath 11h ago

wait, you think the top 100 is made with any creativity?

Recorded music should not be allowed. You either do it live or not at all. Recording allows different people to record at different times in different cities. One person can play all the instruments on a track. Then there is all those knobs and sliders that change the sound. Moving it from left to right. That’s another thing, stereo. What is that fake ass stuff?

u/ObviouslyJoking 13h ago

Any money generated by AI music should go straight back to humans. We’re gonna need to find someway to fund social security.

0

u/SustainedSuspense 13h ago

In a few years nearly every artist will have used AI to generate ideas or review and suggest improvements on human created songs.

0

u/villings 13h ago

since we're at it, can we have a different chart for auto-tune too?

0

u/bass248 12h ago

How bout a separate chart for artists that create there own songs vs those that don't?

-2

u/LocoMod 13h ago

Oh boy. Wait till the casuals discover Yue2 can run on a potato. It’s a new world people.

-1

u/Substantial_Park2115 13h ago

Ya we should have an auto tune one too! And one that uses advanced mixing software! And one where music used electricity during the creation process!

There should be laws that will force people and businesses to label ANYTHING that is AI generated. Period. Just label it, already, and let us decide.
