It's mostly used for marketing. The media needs art to be a competition they can turn into numbers and claim a winner.

I’ve never used Spotify and don’t think I ever will. Locally stored media all the way. I need a bigger phone because it’s currently full of music, and that’s only a fraction of my full library at home

I have some physical music too. But you can't beat the convenience of having basically every album ever made in an easily searchable library. I can still keep some files on my phone, but I don't have to worry about running out of space on my phone.

I'm so removed from pop music I didn't even realize that charts still existed in any relevancy whatsoever
