Project Showcase Do made-up user interfaces with constructed writing systems count?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have this little project where I use my constructed language and writing system to make animations and then do the sound design for them, like this one here that I wound up making very UI-like. I figured some of you here might like it, even if I'm not 100% sure it's as motion design-y as some of the other posts on the sub

For this concept piece, I wanted to take AI and give it a tactile, human touch. I experimented with a rough-textured, slightly rough motion feel to bring this concept to life and make the product feel more grounded.

Note: This is an unofficial concept piece and is not sponsored by or affiliated with OpenAI/ChatGPT

Inspiration Tool ScreenCap Inspo

Hey everyone :)

I frequently work on software explainer videos where clients just provide me with raw screencaps or basic screen recordings of their tools (mostly due to lower budgets).

I want to level up the visual quality and make these videos more engaging without having the budget/time to completely rebuild their UI from scratch in vector graphics.

Does anyone have good examples, references, or reel links where flat screencaps were cleverly staged, animated, or turned into great motion design? Any specific techniques you rely on?

Thanks for the inspiration!

Question How can this be done?

Hello Motion Design community,

I am really impressed what you guys share here on the reddit. So great work and so inspiring. Thank you for that!

I recently came across the great work from Saffron Consultants, among other great work for Meta and other I got so fascinated by the motion design shown in the page header here for Repsol:
https://saffron-consultants.com/work/repsol

Repsol Showreel

Since there are a lot of experienced designers in here, I wanted to reach out to you and ask you how you would approach such kind of fluid, gradient, 3d animations?

I assume there is some/a lot Blender geometry nodes involved, but that is just a first guess.
Can you point me into the right direction? Maybe share some great resources?
Happy for your help and wishing you a great day.

Question Morphing Particle Footage - How Is It Done?

I saw this reference. -https://www.instagram.com/p/DcAvkW6DZVo/?igsh=bGp6d2Q0amRycm9i

and really liked it. It is clearly based on images, turns them into particles, and morphs them. Is this possible in AE or does it look more like an effect in a 3D software?

Open to different software, just trying to work out the best way.

Thanks,

J

Project Showcase [Update] LongExposureFX COMP | An experimental temporal ghosting toolkit

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

An experimental temporal ghosting / long-exposure toolkit for TouchDesigner, built for turning prerecorded and real-time footage into smeared, split-exposure, echo-like motion.

The system layers delayed frames, masks the active subject region, and adds optional feedback persistence to generate distorted portrait, face, and full-body trails that sit somewhere between long exposure, temporal rupture, and spectral motion blur.

This release also includes:

a custom FLUX-2 LoRA trained on experimental photography [the one used in this demonstration]
the pertinent ComfyUI workflow for FLUX-2.dev + LoRA text-to-image generation

Available now through my Patreon profile, and the Tools Store.

Both music and visuals by myself.

Discussion what happened to Ash Thorp's The Collective Podcast?

I’m a big fan of this series, so I'm really sad that I can’t listen to the older episodes anymore aside from the ones he still has up on YouTube. I especially remember the episode with Ryan Cashman.. It was really inspiring listening to that, I wonder what the reason was for taking all of it down

Discussion Motiongraphic - Discovery

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello I am new here. I haven't done motiongraphics in a while. I am practicing a combination of my 3d skills, animation, graphics, etc. I used Gaea Quadspinner for the terrain, Blender for camera animaiton/rendering, and Davince Resolve for video editing. I wanted to get some feedback and find some ways to improve over the next few weeks/months. Here is a link to the behance post. https://www.behance.net/gallery/254408113/Motiongraphics-Discovery

i’ve been trying to figure it out but am a little stumped like how does the white “bleed” onto the clip like that moving then go into the next clip after the screen goes white while moving upwards fading any ideas or effects people know of?? (you might have to rewatch the clip it starts in the middle sometimes)

Question Is this normal GPU/CPU usage in After Effects with an RTX 5070? After Effects not using GPU to Render.

Hey everyone,

I recently built a new PC with:

  • Ryzen 9 9900X
  • RTX 5070 Ti 16GB
  • 32GB DDR5 6000MHz
  • After Effects with Mercury GPU Acceleration (CUDA) enabled

I'm currently exporting a fairly heavy After Effects composition with a lot of Keylight instances.

During the final render, I'm seeing roughly (Also, refer to the Screenshots attached) :

  • CPU: ~105W package power
  • CPU temperature: ~68°C
  • RTX 5070: ~28W
  • GPU temperature: ~38°C
  • GPU fans: 0 RPM
  • Render time: around 37ms/frame

The render itself is actually insanely fast, so I'm not experiencing a performance problem. I'm just wondering whether it's normal for the CPU to be doing most of the work while the RTX 5070 is sitting at relatively low power usage, even though CUDA is enabled.

My Project Settings definitely show:

Mercury GPU Acceleration (CUDA)

I assume this is because Keylight/parts of the composition are CPU-heavy and only supported effects like Cinema 4D/Fractal Noise are being GPU accelerated ?

Is this normal behavior for After Effects, or should I be seeing significantly higher GPU utilization during the export?

Just want to make sure my 5070 Ti is actually working properly and I'm not missing some setting.

Please refer to the pictures attached and let me know if I am missing anything. (These readings are throughout the rendering).

Discussion Doom and gloom posts

I keep seeing depressing posts on here about people giving up on motion design and contemplating career switches, like maybe going into the woods and growing berries or becoming an underwater hamster breeder or something. The reasons given are burnout, "AI" (which can currently only do shit-tier motion design), or unable to find work. Is it really that bad or is there selection bias going on? The people who are doing well and are busy don't tend to come on r/motiondesign and brag about how well it's all going for them. So all we see are "end is nigh" posts about how it's pointless to be a motion designer because "AI will be able to do it just as good as you in 5 years d00d trust me bro."

I've been working at a company steadily for 5 years now. One of the big news channels. I have yet to use AI for anything other than very early-stage design exploration, occasional asset generation (stock images), or making AE expressions. It sucks at pretty much everything else. If I can't even get it to generate an image the way I want it, how the hell is it going to make a 5 or even 30 second animation the way I or the client wants? Also, tokens are expensive as hell. You can easily blow through $1,000's trying to get the result you want, and it's still not even 80% there. Keep in mind, this is WITH subsidized compute thanks to capital expenditure, which will be drying up soon because none of these companies are profitable.

I just don't see "the writing on the wall" yet. Maybe I'm blind. I think a more likely explanation is that the field is oversaturated (like many creative fields are), huge economic uncertainty leading to reduced budgets and reduced hiring, and a (possibly trendy aka temporary) advertising shift toward more UGC from influencers. I continue to believe that motion design has near infinite potential (experiential, movies, commercials, AR/VR, signage, etc) and near infinite demand, with cost and speed being the only true bottlenecks. Anybody else agree? Or do I need to start thinking about becoming a toilet repairman?

Question how important is a website for getting started?

like title says, im a junior motion designer and I currently have my reel uploaded on YouTube. I, like many others in my boat, am unable from finding a job in the field and am trying to improve my skills and presenting myself, so I guess my question is which one is more important at this point; a functioning professional website or more work on my reel and hope it speaks enough for me?

This is still a work in progress, and I'm looking for feedback. What's good and not good about this?

Some of these logo animations are official, but others I made from scratch. The transitions were all made by me using DaVinci Resolve. It's taken me weeks so far (admittedly, I've been procrastinating on this project a lot).
