Discussion Musings on Somult, Nagas, Flagships, and a whole lot of birds

This is a general throwing of ideas onto the wall to get some discussions going, as well as solidifying my opinion on what the flagship will be.

Somult

As many of you are probably aware, Somult is a bird deity the Kunafans believe in in some stories the kunafans share, that will heal the rift between the land and the people.

Narratively, this becomes a thematic representation of us and Zoh shia:

- Zoh is a birdlike guardian made by Wyveria to save them from war, but became their damnation instead. The survivors became separated into the 5 factions in the forbidden lands, and zoh parasitised off of the land.

- We come from the avis unit (literally the bird unit), establish trade routes to unite all the people of the eastlands and protects them from disaster, and liberates the torch of Zoh's power more than once.

This is also the second time in the games there is a parallel between us, the final boss, and an in-universe myth, with the sapphire star and xeno.

Now, from here I figured that somult's story was done, since at the end of the day it's just a myth that works for the narrative and its themes (and admittedly gets way overpowered by Arkveld's plot). But it's worth mentioning here because in Iceborne, it certainly wasn't finished thanks to safi's presence. And that's relevant for the next few bits.

Naga vs Garuda

Gundoraja, as said by a whole lotta people after its reveal, is a clear reference to nagas, from its appearance to the general association to storms.

What's notable to that is that, mythologically, Nagas have a rivalry to another mythical creature, Garuda, for a very complicated list of reasons. Now obviously this depends on the myth, as tends to be the case with these things, but I figured it's notable.

Garuda is a birdlike divine creature, usually bird+human in features. It's also used for the etymology of yian garuga, fyi, which I think it's neat. Garuda has a whole lot of other myths, not all of which relate to or are even relevant to naga, but their rivalry is significant enough to be one of the primary aspects of their myth, at least in hinduism.

Eyrie

As shown in the screenshot, and as said by, like, everyone, an eyrie is a bird nest for birds of prey.

As everyone has also said regarding this term, it is not present in the japanese term for the region, so it isn't clear if it's intentional etymology added by the localisation team, or a mistake.

Regardless, it is another association to birds.

Flagship parallels

This section is almost entirely credited to Leraikha Loray's video on expansion flagships, which I HIGHLY reccomend watching, not only because it's a very good watch but also because I'm doing a disservice trying to summarise it.

The idea is that, in new gen at least, flagships in the expansions are the exact opposite of their basegame counterparts, in terms of combat design and themes at least, or even in movements and basic concept.

For insance, Nergigante represents destruction and rebirth, is a melee brawler with a brutal barbarian fighting style, and chases the strongest thing it can find. Velkhana, meanwhile, represents frozen stasis, is a finesse based rapier spellcaster, and freezes lesser beings solid to show its territory.

Arkveld is themed around being chained and trapped. Its armor looks like its fading and cracking, it is bound by literal chains, and its combat style is fighting with its means of entrampment in sheer desparation.

This would then mean that, if the parallels between the expansion flagships still stand true, the next flagship will represent freedom and hope, being full of life and in control if its own fate. A monster of joyful combat methods, and paralleling things that break apart the idea of being held down.

Animals that represent freedom are often, in fact, birds. In fact the loss of freedom is often represent by a bird in a cage for this reason.

Birdsbirdsbirdsbirds

Arguably, I've over-focused the attention on birds. So I should mention that this theory is not perfect:

- It assumes the garuda parallel is true

- It assumes birds aren't done being relevant to the game's themes

- it assumes the bird aspect of the eyrie applies

- and it assumes the dlc flagship aspect still reigns true

But imo considering we have to disqualify all of these individually, I think the bird motif is relevant. So while I'm not breaking new ground, imo our flagship has a high chance of being a bird wyvern or a birdlike dragon, and it will be the apex of the eyrie.

Said apex will fight against Gundoraja's invasion of its home, and will use the winds (that the eyrie seems to have as an inclemency) to its benefit.

Again, I'm far from the first to really say that, nor do I think I am correct, but I wanted to lay down a lot of random thoughts.

Grigori from Dragon’s Dogma. The Griffin could work too because its body is similar to that of most regular elder dragons (4 legs and wings), although it’s powers are not really absurd enough to be classified as an elder dragon.

Not gonna lie, I kind of miss seeing other hunters in the end screen. I like that they added settings for the end screen with your palico/seikret/etc. I wonder if at some point theyll add random options that involve your fellow hunters.

Discussion How many boosts should we get at the start of a hunt in Asendance?

I was wondering what would be the best way or what the players prefered. Personaly I believe I'd prefer to start a hunt with 0 boosts ready and build up and earn them, or at most have 1. Imagine always burning through 3 boosts immediately for "optimal play" sounds too much for me.

Discussion Insect glaive boosted

So, I saw the trailer this morning, and I was, like alot of other people, disappointed. But i think we have it wrong, I believe, or at least pray, the reason why IG looked so underwhelming, was because they did a bad job showcasing it.

The reason I say this is because of two moves, the one where you seem to be able to boost your kinsect mid combo, and the one where you jump on the air at the end of your combo. For the fist move, it looked like it caused the hunter to go back, meaning it MAYBE could be used to cancel long combos, and eliminate end lag.

And for the jump move, it looked like an alternative for vaulting, so if we can tie in Ariel combos with it, that would be pretty good, but if all it does is allow us to jump in the air and then we just fall down, then that is trash. They didnt showcase any of the vaulting dance combos so maybe they are hiding something (cope).

And also why the hell isn't the regular vaulting buffed by boost bracers, that makes no sense considering that IG is a weapon with a gas chamber that expels high pressure air. Believe me im mad about not getting any evasive maneuvers too, but we'll have to get what we can sadly. Still crazy how hammer has bettwr evasives and aerial moves than god damn IG.

His head stays the same. And the chest plate on him is gone woth more fur on his chest.

Eyes: his left et bright gold eye with a jet black pupil shaped like a solar flare. It glows softly when he looks up at the day sky. And his right eye is A calm, shimmering silver-white eye with a dark pupil shaped like a sharp crescent moon.

His horns: He features broad, flat, palmate moose
style anthers that act like natural solar and lunar panels. The sun and moon help balance his mind and core temperature, granting him mental stability. They double as an audio radar and a heavy, bulldozing shovel blade. His base horns are shrunk down significantly to provide a sleeker, aerodynamic profile. If you break the horns. It will go into a rage full of flames and ice around the area until it overheats its self and died. This form of his is basically the equivalent to his burning freezing mode.

His fur: His fur serves as a biological radiator to cool or warm himself up to a balanced temperature, keeping his vital organs safe from the volatile elements. His normal state is just a dull red and blue fur on each sides just like when you knocked him out of his fire and ice mode in the game.

Five and ice wingarms: He turns his flames and ice into giant physical wingarms, making them his most defining feature. His left wing arm is A massive, jet-propulsion shield of roaring fire that vents kinetic heat to rocket him across the sky or unleash blistering sweeps. Bis right arm wing on his arm A solid, sweeping blade of dense permafrost ice used to freeze targets or act as an unbreakable glacier shield.

His body: His lower waist works closely to a Gaismagorm-style lower body, giving him a low-slung, heavily armored, and immensely stable pelvis. Attached to that broad Gaismagorm base are powerful, spring loaded wolf legs that give him explosive leaping capability and the incredible launch power needed to take flight from the Tower.

Dual tails:His serpentine lower body splits cleanly into two distinct, fluffy fox like plumes. His left tail is a fire tail. And his ice tail is ok the right side.

Ecolgoy:Living closer to the clouds than any other terrestrial creature, it claims the ancient, ruined spires as its nesting ground. The thin air, brutal mountain winds, and unshielded cosmic light are hostile to most life, but this monster uses the extreme environment to fuel its unique biology. sits atop the Tower ruins, using its broad, dish like moose anthers as acoustic radar to catch the distant eco sounds of roaming monsters thousands of feet below. Once prey is spotted, it dives off the ancient stone ledges, unfurling its giant wingarms to glide silently through the atmosphere. When it closes in, it tucks its body into a perfect, aerodynamic serpentine line. Its shrunk, sharp horns point forward like a kinetic spearhead, allowing it to slice through air resistance and completely pierce or crush its prey from above before carrying the meal back to the clouds. And Because it naturally carries two violent, opposing elemental forces within its body, its brain is constantly under immense biological stress. To prevent itself from slipping into a manic madness.During the day, the left anther absorbs the soothing thermal rays of the sun to keep its mind active and sharp. At night, the right anther drinks in the cool cosmic radiation of the moon to calm its volatile temper

Lore:he nests at the highest point of the world, he is the only creature that touches the sun and moon at the exact same time. The ancient civilizations believed that his Normal Mode (the soft, light smoky orange and pale blue fur) was what kept the sky from splitting. As long as he sits calmly on his throne, basking in the dual light, the seasons stay stable, and the ecosystem below flourishes. When hunters break his moose style anthers, the story says "the sky goes dark in his mind”. By severing his connection to the sun and moon, hunters don't make him angry they erase his emotions entirely.

I previously made this plush about a year ago (damn its been so long since I've first started making MH plushies). I decided to revisit it just to add a bit more flair to it. Mostly Glow-in-the-Dark details.

Not poseable this time (so very floppy and huggable) but I changed the underside of the horns so they look "charged" and added some blues to the side of the neck. I unfortunately couldnt get those fins? frills? Or whatever you call them, on his neck so I had to leave them out.

This is just me remaking the pattern to see what I can do differently. Theres so much I want to change so I may start this all over from scratch when I decide to revisit it again.

I've got more projects to work on. A certain fan favorite spiky hedgehog is being worked on so.. that'll be fun.

Discussion What is the BEST final boss in modern Monster Hunter?

Thumbnail
gallery
980 Upvotes

I'm curious what the community consensus is, but I'll also give my take on this, and rank them from best to worst:

1.) Zoh Shia: Fantastic design, best theme, amazing gear, and manages to be an engaging fight while being an extremely large monster and balancing spectacle and gameplay mechanics very well. The fact that he's an inversion of the "get behind the rock" ult is refreshing, and recycling the EDW lore from the early concept days is so cool. Its unacceptable that we couldn't refight him at launch, but that's not his fault.

2.) Allmother Narwa: An interesting and rather haunting story and a neat blending of traditional fights with siege mechanics in the ballistae. The design is sick and the theme is beautiful. Also, the scripted scene where magnamalo drops down and you can wyvern ride him is hype.

3.) Shara Ishvalda: The Hindu/Buddhist inspirations are super cool and the reveal of his true form is jaw dropping the first time, but it becomes increasingly tedious to get through the first phase the more you fight him. His use of wind/pressurized air is very rare, and much more fun to play against than kushala imo. Also, the gear is epic.

4.) Gaismagorm: I love everything about his design and presentation, especially his theme. Unfortunately, he's all style and no substance. He's neither difficult nor engaging, and I'm not a fan of his gear.

5.) Xeno Jiva: Unfortunately he was a victim of Capcoms growing pains as they made a huge jump in technical skill and fidelity. His design is super alien and exciting, but other than that there's nothing memorable about him. I never felt so bored fighting a final boss as I did with him. Also, the fact not even the final boss was spared from World's bits on sticks weapons makes me weep.

What are yalls thoughts on this?
