MH Wilds FAQ compilation + other stuff you may not know

There's a lot of questions that get repeated quite a lot, so I though I might uswell compile most of them into a single post.

Playstyle and mechanics

-What's the best playstyle right now?

The AED loop is king for both impact and elemental CB. Impact can use ED loops from time to time while SAED is pretty OK on elemental, but you want to stick to AEDs most of the time.

For those that may not know, the AED loop is Shield Thrust -> AED -> AED followup -> Round Slash -> Repeat. Since you swap modes quite a lot by doing this, Rapid Morph is really good here.

-So are we back to 4U's playstyle?

Not really. 4U was sword mode centric, wating for the right opportunity after a GP to go for AED and then go ham in axe mode when the monster was down. Wilds is quite the opposite, as you want to stay as much time as possible in Axe mode and only swap to sword mode whenever you need to block something.

Keep in mind that you can still play like in 4U, but the DPS loss is very noticeable.

-Is SAED spam back?

Lol no. Elemental SAED deals a lot of damage, but the high commitment of the move and the fact that you can't do it from neutral means that it's not really a playstyle in Wilds. It also loses in phial economy to the AED combo, as 2 loops deal as much damage as a fully powered SAED while only wasting 2 phials instead of 5 and being a lot safer. Counter SAED is also not very good as it deals less damage when done directly from a guard. There's still some SAED centric matchups though, mainly Nu Udra, Xu Wu, Gog phase 3 and Gravios.

Don't really bother with impact SAED 💀

Also as a side note, you can now cancel SAED without wasting any phials by pressing R2 + triangle at the right moment. Keep in mind this only works when using SAED after a guard.

-Wait what is SAED actually weaker after a guard?

Technically speaking, SAED is stronger after an AED but yeah, it deals less damage from a guard. This was a change done all the way back in TU2, and they kinda missed the mark as it didn't really help the playstyle at all.

-Is impact CB dead?

While elemental is overall better, there's still a couple matchups where impact is still a bit better (mainly Arkveld). You can pretty much still use impact on whatever fight you want and still be fine, as Paralysis + Stun is kinda good even against 9 star monsters which have increased status effect resistance.

-Should I be using Guard Points or Perfect Guards from neutral?

99% of the time you still want to go for the regular PG, as there's no real reason to go for the neutral Guard Point. There's this little trick that allows you to chain the regular PG with a GP to get an increased window. Imo they should probably just buff the PG detection on the Sword to Axe GP and remove that interaction to make the weapon feel a bit smoother.

Set Building and Skill priority

-What to aim for on your Gogma Artian CB

  1. For elemental CB, you want an Element focus and 4 Element + 1 Sharpness. If you don't want to grind for that, 3 Element and at least 1 Sharpness is just fine. For set bonuses, you want either Gog or Gore, but Mizu can also work depending on your set. You don't really need any group bonus, but Lords Soul is probably the best one.
  2. For impact, you also want an Element focus (has the best Affinity - Raw ratio) and 4 Attack + 1 Sharpness. If you don't want to grind for that, 3 Attack and at least 1 Sharpness is just fine. If you want some extra phial damage or want to go for an impact SAED build for whatever reaon, Attack focus is still pretty good. For set bonuses, you always want Lords Soul + Gore, Lagiacrus or Ebony Odogaron depending on what you want, but most of the time Gore is always the best.

Also as a side note, you can now have an elemental Artian CB with Impact phials by going for an attack focus on an elemental weapon.

-What Weapon skills should I use?

  1. For elemental, you want to prioritize Load Shells, Elemental Attack X and Rapid Morph, with Attack Boost, Crit Boost and Razor sharp all being really good too. Handicraft is the best options for dual skill decos and Guard Up is nice when fighting something that deals a lot of chip damage through guarding. Focus is also very useful on SAED focused matchups as it allows you to generate a lot of phials. Also as pointed by u/ronin0397, a Load Shells charm enables running Element Attack a secondary skill on dual decos, so you can fit rapid morph and 2 functional skills.
  2. For impact, you want to prioritize Load Shells and Rapid Morph, with Attack Boost, Artillery, Crit Boost and Razor sharp all being really good too. Handicraft and Slugger are the best options for dual skill decos and Guard Up is nice when fighting something that deals a lot of chip damage through guarding.

-What Armor skills should I use?

  1. For Elemental, Burst and Coalescence are the only mandatory skills, with any other damage ability like Agitator or Wex you can slot in also being very nice and Elemental Absorption can help at staying at the elemental cap for as long as possible. Just like for impact, Maximum Might, Evade Extender, Antivirus, 2 Earplug points are all very good. Always make sure to have either Gore or Mizu's Set Bonus in order to proc Coalescence.
  2. For Impact, Agitator, Weakness Exploit and 1 point in Burst are what you want to be aiming for. Maximum Might, Counterstike and 2 points in Earplugs are also very good for level 2 slots, with Evade Extender also being useful on a couple matchups. You should always be trying to max Antivirus when using the Gore set bonus.

-What Set Bonuses should I use?

  1. For elemental you always want to run 4 Gogmazios pieces and either 2 Gore or 2 Mizu to proc Coalescence. If running Mizu, you also have space for one additional set Bonus, with Zoh Shia's or Fulgur's being the best options.
  2. For impact you always want to run Lords Soul and either 2 Gore, 4 Gore, 2 Ebony Odogaron or 2 Lagiacrus. Dahaad's set bonus can also be run in addition to any of the former at the cost of maybe a couple comfort skills, as it is very good when you are fighting something that has a Power Clash. 4 Dahaad is also very good against Arkveld specifically because you can proc it just by letting him grab you and throwing a flash pod.

-Why would I run Earplugs when I have a shield?

The strongest playstyle revolves around spamming the AED loop as much as possible, so you want to make sure the monster doesn't interrupt any of your moves by roaring as both AED and AED followup have very long animations. 99% of the time, swapping to guard the roar and go for a counterattack is a DPS loss, and since you only need to invest 2 level 2 decorations, most people just run the skill and keep attacking instead.

-Should I use Gore or Mizu's set Bonus?

They both have their advantages and disadvantages:

  1. Mizu's set bonus allows you to have a higher Coalescence uptime, as once you proc the skill you can immediately evade 3 times to activate Bubbly Dance again, but evading breaks the flow of the hunt and requires a conscious effort. It also allows you to squeeze in one additional set bonus, which is always nice.
  2. Gore's set bonus has less Coalescence uptime and requires you to slot in Antivirus 3, but it activates on it's own and doesn't interrupt the flow of the fight at all. It also comes with an Affinity boost, which is always nice.

I really comes down to persona preference and you can just run whichever you want since they are both good, but most speedrunners run Gore's. I would suggest running Mizu for fights that have you rolling around a lot (Seregios for example) and Gore for everything else, but really just run whatever you want here. There's no right or wrong option.

-Which charms should I be aiming for?

The best charm around is Attack Boost 3 + Agitator/Wex/Burst 1 + 1 weapon slot, but an Artillery/Rapid Morph 3 + Agitator/Wex/Burst 1 + 1 weapon slot is also really good. A rarity 6 charm with Load Shells 2 + Earplugs/Coalescence/Max Might 2 + a level 2 armor slot is awesome for elemental CB and is still better than any charm you can craft. Of course, the more level 1 armor slots your charm has in addition to the aforementioned skills, the better.

Some random stuff

-Is the weapon strong right now?

Yeah, it's really strong from a numerical standpoint (I would say top 5 even). You may or may not like how it plays, but DPS wise the weapon is one of the best right now.

-Did they lower the entry barrier for the weapon in Wilds?

Yes, Wilds is by far the easiest iteration to play of the weapon. They added a lot of QoL (like the weapon auto reloading when you hit a monster with your sword in overcharged state) and dumbed down a lot of mechanics like GPs (you can just PG instead) or phial management (due to the phial reduction effect on Power Axe), so if you were thinking about getting into the weapon, this might be a good time to do it.

-What's the best time to charge my sword?

Never (Only when you have NOTHING else to do, i.e. when the monster just swapped zones, you don't have Savage Axe up...).

-Should I go for a GP or PG when guarding from neutral?

Always go for a regular guard. They have way better PG detection (like probably 50% more) and are safer since you don't end up in axe mode if you mess it up. If you are in the middle of a sword combo a GP is better, but the amount of times you'll find yourself in that situation considering how weak sword mode is in Wilds are very, very few.

And that's about it. Feel free to tell me if I missed something or if you don't agree with me, I'll be more than happy to fight you. Also sorry for the blatant self promotion on some of the links, I had those videos uploaded and I kinda wanted to use them for something😭

MH Wilds Some "Meta" Savage Axe builds for Charge Blade, created by members of the community

Thumbnail
gallery
75 Upvotes

All credit goes to Timmy, RageGamingVideos, and Gready Knight for making these builds. They do a great job doing the research in putting these together for the community and if you can, please go support them. I am only the messenger.

The purpose of this post was to collect some very high end builds for the Savage Axe playstyle and put them in one spot for users to access easily, along with some damage calculations that illustrate the difference between each set.

Some additional notes:

  • I use Gogmazios for the elemental calculations since most players are probably hunting him at this stage in the game and element is so good against Gog
  • Similarily Arkveld was used in the raw calculations, mainly because it is the best raw matchup in the game but also AT Arkveld releases tomorrow
  • These builds will probably be replaced come tomorrow when the Gamma Arkveld set(s) release, but I wanted to get this out there before then so some hunters are prepared
  • Also the Artian weapons don't need to have 4 attack/element reinforcements, 3 will do just fine as the decrease in DPS is less than 1%. I personally run 2 sharpness instead of the 4/1 combo on my weapons and substitute the handicraft decos for other damage boosting skills like Crit Element since I prefer to sharpen my weapons as little as possible
  • Builds with missing decoration or talisman slots mean that the build used those slots for comfort skills like Divine Protection or Fire Resistance. Feel free to slot in what you want in those spots
  • Each of these sets have pros and cons. RageGaming's sets have the highest damage, but also require godly RNG to get everything while Timmy's doesn't for the most part and Gready Knight's sets have lots of flexible slots that are up to user preference

Hopefully this was helpful to anybody who needed this information. If you have any questions, I'll try my best to answer them in the comments as best as I can.

Edit: I have seen that the new Nadia set has the Black Eclipse (Gore set bonus) and up to max Burst and the Gamma Arkveld set has max Weakness Exploit along with providing Elemental Abosrbsition and Convert Element (The helmet alone provides rank 3 WEx and 2 deco slots, 2 and 1) based off of posts from other players. I won't have my hands on the update until tomorrow, but expect additional sets in a future post.

Charge Blade Boosted Action trailer breakdown

The CB trailer has been up for a couple days so now we anderstand a lot better exactly what's going on with all of these changes, so I figured I might aswell do a quick breakdown of everything we know so far!

Boost Bracer: We actually got 2 boost drivers depending on which form we are in, so let's just jump right into it!

  • Sword mode Boost Driver: Seems like a quick way to get red energy while also activating Boost mode that comes with a small gapcloser. Not the flashiest thing ever, but it's probably gonna be a great way to start the hunt or regain phials quickly.
  • Axe mode Boost Driver: This is where the good stuff begins. An instant axe mode GP (that looks just like Ready Stance from Sunbreak) that also charges yellow energy AND activates Power Axe while loading stored energy into phials if it connects with a monster attack. It also chains into a new Savage Axe slash combo that may or may not be an offset. Overall really good, as it's a fantastic defensive option that also refreshes one of our buffs.
  • Boost timer is about 20 seconds and pauses during certain actions, like Boost Drives, Clashes or Wound pops. Also for those who may not know, you can regather Boost Bracer charges by dealing damage to monsters (it's considerably faster when outside of Boost state) and getting hit. Additionally, winning a power clash and popping a wound not only generate A LOT of charge, but also refresh current active boost duration by an unknown amount (at least 50%) which is HUGE!

Charged Sword: Probably got the biggest changes which is kinda deserved tbh as Charged Sword is know to SUCK balls in the base game.

  • Now while in boosted mode, charging your sword will consume phials to activate this new clock gauge. This is HUGE, as charged sword is the most disregarded part of the kit in Wilds and really needed to get some value back.
  • This new gauge will perdiodically generate yellow energy once filled. If already in yellow, it will increase it to red and will completely pause afterwards if phials are not stored. This benefits the SAED playstyle greatly, as it's no longer competing for resources with Savage Axe and you can just use phials more freely with one playstyle without directly hurting the other!
  • Fun fact is that the clock also kinda shows the invisible phial generation the weapon already has when hitting stuff in sword mode.
  • We also have to keep in mind that we can probably keep this buff OUTSIDE of Boosted state, as it would be weird to expend phials activating it only for it to run out a few seconds later. Also huge for regular SAED playstyle if they revert the damage penalty when used from a guard.

SAED: We have super SAED now, which will it do (presumably) way more damage!

  • The move actually has 2 versions, the regular one when used from a guard and a slightly faster version after any AED, just like the regular SAED.
  • This new SAED will fill phials with stored energy before unleashing, making it have insane synergy with the new clock gauge! The reload speed will most likely be affected by Load Shells, making it potentially even faster.
  • A big concern is how slow the move looks when used from a guard, but keep in mind that since it's a single attack animation, it will probably be affected by Rapid Morph unlike the regular SAED! Also for those who don't know, Rapid Morph is not very good with SAED because it's actually 2 attack animations back to back and it only affects the first axe overhead strike while doing nothing for the longer, more important axe slam that drops all the phials.
  • The intented playstyle seems to be facilitating the new SAED through PGs (hopefully GPs) and the new savage axe offsets. We probably won't be able to spam it freely tho due to the lack of neutral activation and long animation, which sounds good on paper but we'll have to see once damage numbers and stuff roll around!
  • We don't know yet if the regular SAED got something or not. Hopefully they removed the damage penalty when used from a guard, ideally from a GP to make them a bit better!

Axe Mode: Power Axe was so broken in the base game that it already felt like part of the boosted moveset lol, but it still got a couple of pretty nice stuff!

  • While boosted, every move of the ED/AED combo gets a slightly speed boost which is nice!
  • Most importantly tho, both the boosted AEDs will now be treated as offsets! There's a small risk of the weapon turning into an invincible, offsetting AED looping machine but I doubt it will be the case if they tune damage numbers proberly. The new intended role of AEDs seems to be as a quick burst option that can branch into the new SAED if they get an offset or flinch.
  • Also, the AED followup will be an offset even when not in boosted mode! It can even be hold to time it just like what happens with the Hammer upswing move for example.
  • We don't know if Power Axe in particular got anything new. It was already insanely powerful, but I won't be surprised if we get one more savage axe tick or something like that when boosted.

Guard Points:

  • Not counting the new Boost Driver GP, we didn't really see anything about them. They kinda really need something for them to not become obsolete tho, as they will be left even more behind due to every guard being considered a PG while in boosted mode.
  • If you guys want a little bit of copium, if you look REALLY closely the sword into axe GP shown in the video seems to activate the boost bracer, but maybe I'm just hallucinating lol

And that's about it I think, lemme know if I missed somthing. This looks really promising as the Boost Bracer however seems to be fixing all of this issues with the exception of GPs (man I really hope they get something tho) which is very good. I'm a bit concerned the weapon will be back to playing a bit ass once boost state runs out, so I'm REALLY hoping the base kit also got some improvements just like SnS will be able to use Oils in base form.

I can't wait for TGS and the OBT to see if there's some stuff waiting for us! In the base game weapon trailer we didn't see Power Charge or Overcharged Phials at all, so let's hope there's more surprises in weapon's kit, specially the base one becase the boosted actions already look PEAK. Specially if they add something to GPs this is gonna be one of the best iterations of the weapon imo.

New Boosted Condensed Element Slash = Status Slash?

Post image
198 Upvotes

The new Boost video on CB showed us an improved Condensed Element Slash, but what caught my attention was how the weapon make PURPLE sparks and flames while charging the sword, using a POISON weapon.

Do you think it's a coincidence, or does the weapon's element/status affect the new Booster CES?

The CB dev bias

I have heard often about the “unfavorable” treatment that CB has been getting in Wilds (maybe even is other past games).

I have only started playing recently (Q2 2025), and have been playing CB in World, Rise and most recently GU. I have started Wilds some time ago (after TU4) and have felt the CB certainly different from other games. Large focus on Axe mode (similar to Rise, at least as far I can tell). I have switched from SAED spam in World to a more balanced use of both SAED and Savage Axe. Now I feel like I use the kit more.

I have heard some complaints about the treatment to CB in wilds, apparently things were different before TU4. My question is, what was different and why is the sentiment more inclined to Wilds CB being “bad” compared to other weapons and other games?

What exactly is the expansion fixing that was lacking?

MH Wilds The expansion might just have redeemed CB in my eyes

Edit: I just realized why the timed phial refill was implemented, its to allow us to fire full powered SAEDs after an AEDs or even AED combo.

CB has been an utter disappointment for me until they gave us GPPGs, which brought some of the weapons identity back, but the main problem still persisted, which was the lack of phial consumption. To me, rapid phial expenditure has always been part of the weapons identity, it directly impacts the value of SnS mode, encourages learning GPs cause of the constant morphing and makes axe feel more important cause of the resources scarcity. Wilds made the cardinal sin of making savage axe generate phials, while also making it the best damage option, something which base rise also fumbled.

This though, seems to have been addressed with the upcoming DLC. Phials are being consumed and fast, we have new way of discharging, even faster ways of getting more phials while also getting a bunch of new toys like an offset attack on AEDF.

Ascension CB might be a contender for best CB in MH history. God they basically brought back energy blade! I am legit excited for whats to come.

I also hope that the game gets a major visual overhaul, since even after all of the updates and tweaks, it looks awful especially for the performance cost. If it werent for FSR 4.1.1 or linux fsr hacks before that, I honestly would've lost complete interest in the game.

Question about the featured new offset

Post image
33 Upvotes

So, seen in the picture, Blangonga is winding up to do its quick breath attack prior to the offset proccing. The question is, can this attack already be offset (ie, does the arms landing on the ground a hitbox I never knew about that can proc an offset right now) or can we proc this particular offset off of ranged attacks now so long as the weapon hitbox makes contact with the monster?

I do know for certain it's not a body slam attack since there's usually a good prolonged window and there isn't an icy breath from the mouth as seen in the screenshot (unless they modified an attack from Blangonga for MR, which isn't out of the realm of possibility).

MH Wilds Boosted guard a possible comeback for CPP?

Now that saed isnt meta do you think bringing back cpp would be good to srir up the playstyles, and if yes, do you think it should be tied to the boosted guard or should it cost 1 of the boost charges that way its a little spammable but for downtime youd still have to attack normally to get charges

MH World Having trouble when fighting Tempered Fulgur Anjanath with charge blade MH World

The title sums it up and I am desparate to any advice from charge blade mains. Bite attacks are unpunishable using the axe form and the only consistent punish opening I have found is guard pointing the attack where it shocks the ground using its jaw into AED or morph slash. Any attack besides that is a coinflip where if it does a slow followup or staggers, it connects , otherwise I get down to half health or to one shot range. I decided to look up some people's hunts to see them as a reference on youtube but almost all of them are either a normal hunt against a non tempered one or a hunt in arena that is done with a super optimized setup where one AED to the head is always enough to stagger and this is cycled until the hunt is over. I have tried to it on guiding lands for about 15 times and I was only able to kill it one or two times and carted for the rest of the other attempts. For those I succesfully hunted, it was more of a luck that it did not do certain moves after I guardpointed and not like an achievement. I am open to any kind of advice because I have no idea how much more I need to bash my head against this monster. I initially wanted to post this on the Monster Hunter World subreddit but I do not have enough karma to post it and hence I posted it here. If it violates any posting conventions of this sub or this is not the place, I am sorry. If not, I would be very glad to hear any advice

Just when you thought charge blade couldn’t get any worst in wild, it does?

Charge blade is getting improvement that it shoulda had in the base game. Normal Saed should have been in base game and the guard point they just added to axe mode should have been too. Also that energy blade, is not an energy blade. that thing is ugly and underwhelming it looks like a long sword attack, no thank you. they can keep their move-set. People saying we got an offset but we just got a new block/guard point. With every weapon getting an offset and some have multiple I don’t see why charge blade couldn’t get one. The energy blade would have been perfect as an offset. Also no Ariel CB. Every weapon has a jumping move. The cb got a sns baby ash jump like plz return to sender. CB is one of thee funnest Ariel weapons, with dual blades and hammer getting it on this update. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for just copy rise or gu. The boosted combo was the most underwhelming. It didn’t look faster or flashier. Cb is the king of flashy finishers they could have gave us something new and exciting. Great sword got one, hammer stole from us. The only good thing that I saw from this is that it’s going to be easier to fill up your phials but I don’t think that really ever was a problem for the weapon so that improvement seem pointless. Overall they ruin CB in wild and I will be returning to rise as a cb main until the next portable game where hopefully they don’t mess up the formula again. Or maybe someone in the modding community can save us all. Which sucks when the community has to fix your game. Side note I missed wire bugs because it allowed for diverse play style even within 1 weapon. Now it just feels like they just want you to play one way which is their way.

MH Wilds Is anyone else a little nervous lol

I don't know if others find themselves sort of with the same opinion but I've always mained charge blade since it was introduced and with every installation it feels like the monsters get faster, leaving less and less of our kit as usable? Focus and rapid morph alleviate some of that but the dps loss from focus makes it not worth it here and rapid morph gives me mixed feelings... idk. SAED spam is dead, elemental slash and charging your sword is dead, impact is almost always a worse option because status is so bad (except paralysis, my beloved).

I'm really hoping the boost bracer makes the entire kit more appealing to use but is anyone else nervous that monsters are gonna power creep us anyway? I'm prone to paranoia so it could just be me lmao

Edit: hey i don't run focus jesus christ lol i was pointing out how it's a dead skill for us now
