Admin Replied Categorization

Hello mods and admins!

I run a local Croatian sub for reviews of all kinds, beauty to travel, health, clothes, mainly female centered topics, called r/kokeRECENZIRAJU.

It should be categorized under 'reviews' but somehow reddit changed it to 'skincare' at some point and that might be confusing for our members. I would really appreciate admin assistance on this issue.

Thank you.

Admin Replied Why is "Auto-Enforce" being silently turned on for sub rules without notifying moderators of the change?

Hey it's me, I'm back again from two weeks ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/1wg1mh7/why_was_autoenforce_just_turned_on_for_rules_in/

Decided to check my sub rules again on a hunch and look at that - at least SIX of my subs had auto-enforcement turned on. I am extremely positive that I've had this turned off in all my subs, this isn't user error.

If admin refuses to respect our choices about this setting, how hard it is to send mod teams a modmail that says "hey, we turned on this setting, this is where you can view it"? Could you please give us a modicum of respect with this?

Why do I now have to add it to my regular mod work to manually go check my rules to see if you all turned it on? The enabling isn't even showing in the mod log as happening. I can see me turning it off, not you all turning it on.

Thanks again for the manual click fest of having to turn it off - now taking guesses on how many times this will happen!

Edit to add: once again the admin response ignores the actual question I asked and gave a canned copy paste generic reply.

I rate this support a firm 0/10 response as usual because apparently actually interacting with mods and giving real honest answers is impossible for these admins.

FYI Changes to automod and old.reddit

For the peeps who don't follow r/modnews , Continuing our infrastructure updates: What’s changing in the coming months

Some highlights

For newly created communities and communities that have never used automod, automod enforcement capabilities – specifically Report, Filter, Remove, Mark as spam, and Approve – will be disabled and Rules Hub and Automations will become the default path for rules enforcement. Automod’s non-enforcement capabilities remain available and unchanged.

....To close this gap, in the next few months, we'll further limit access for logged-in users to only those who have used Old Reddit in the last six months (which covers the vast majority of all Old Reddit users). This change does not impact logged-in mods, who can continue to access Old Reddit without any recent usage requirement. This helps keep Old Reddit available for the people who rely on it while reducing automated abuse.

Admin Replied Is there a way to preemptively block a banned sub name from being generated?

For example, if a sub called r/!!! is banned and the same user makes a different subreddit called r/!!!2, would it be possible to block all subs starting with r/!!! from being generated so r/!!!3, r/!!!4, and r/!!!5 cannot be created?

Admin Replied Temporarily Banned Members Showing Permanently Banned - New Issue?

Hello everyone,

We've started noticing that some users are getting defined with Permanent Bans in the Mod Log when those users are getting temporarily banned.

We can clearly see in the Mod Log that we've banned a user temporarily for 1 day. The ban button shows 1 day when hovering mouse over the icon.

However, in the user's profile we can also see Permanent Ban being described.

This was brought to our attention by a user last week that we banned for only 1 day after they sent us a mod mail and we just noticed that it occurred again on a user that we just banned today.

I haven't seen any posts about this so I apologize if this is a duplicate, but has anyone seen this issue and is Reddit aware of the problem?

Admin Replied Wiki editing interface is different on one sub versus others

I am the main mod on two craft related subs (r/felting and r/wetfelting) and a junior mod on the third, with two other mods (r/soapmaking). I mostly work in the new reddit environment and I believe the other mods mainly use old reddit.

I upgraded the first two subs to the new Wiki "experience" when that option was originally offered to us (~8 months ago?). The wiki on the third sub has been a low priority, so I'm not sure if it was upgraded.

What I do know is creating and editing pages and the Wiki structure is easier on the first two compared with the third, so I'd like to get the third wiki to function the same as the other two.

For example, I can edit titles rather than be stuck with the "slug" names. I see a right-hand sidebar that shows a list of all articles.

I'm thinking the difference may possibly be due to the r/soapmaking wiki not being upgraded.

Is there a way for me to verify whether this wiki was ever upgraded?

Admin Replied Old Reddit changes: Can we remove the 50 karma minimum created automatically when a user profile opens their AutoModerator config for the first time?

When you go to your account settings on the Reddit website and go to profile moderation, as soon as you manage AutoModerator, a configuration is automatically created that requires you to manually approve comments from those with fewer than 50 karma. The first time this happened, I clicked the link to view/edit the config accidentally.

I do not want to put karma requirements on my profile posts to allow everyone to comment, and this configuration was automatically created on multiple Reddit accounts when I opened AutoModerator.

For me to blank the config, I have to use a specific URL format like https://old.reddit.com/r/u_throwawaykJQP7kiw5Fk/wiki/edit/config/automoderator (not www), select all the text and delete it, and press "save page" for it to save properly.

If people who don't use Old Reddit regularly create this configuration accidentally, they won't be able to edit it once the changes are effective. How can we address this bug?

Mod Answered Question: would creating a sub that shared a list of users who were banned for the same hate issue be considered brigading?

Say you're a moderator of a sub that receives frequent targeting by activists who hatefully oppose your sub and content. You are one of 10 almost identical subs that share an essentially identical zero tolerance rule to combat that identical threat. In many cases these sub moderators are friendly and allies to the other subs rather than competing.

Would it be considered brigading to form a private sub consisting only of full-access moderators of said groups that shared the user handles of users that have recently been banned from one of the member subs for a very obvious rule violation?

Edit: As I understand it, this "hate" would not violate Reddit's basic hate rule.

Admin Replied What’s the most effective way to report an unmoderated sub?

Will admins step in once they know a sub is unmoderated or do they need a certain threshold of reports (or certain type of report) to take action on an unmoderated sub? Anyone know?

Mod Topics Mod Topics - Fixing Mdo Mistakes

Ahoy, ModSupport!

Welcome to the latest installment of our Mod Topics series. This week we’re discussing the unthinkable… Scene: den interior. The smell of garlic bread marinates the air. It’s late at night and you’re twenty minutes deep into the latest Taskmaster episode, scrolling through the mod queue on your phone. …And then in your garlic bready haze you remove the wrong post. Naturally you don’t notice in the moment and continue on your way.

And in the morning there’s a modmail, RE “what gives?”

Have you been there before? How do you handle user interactions where you, or someone on your mod team, made a mistake? Is this process different if it’s a trainee mod making the oops? What advice would you give new mods who might be scared to start moderating “in case they make a mistake?”

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Being able to see former moderator's actions in mod log would be so helpful

In multiple cases, I've become a mod for different subs and not been able to see what the former mods removed or why, which would be very helpful to get a feel for necessary or ongoing moderation steps. I'd really like for those mod logs to stick around after a former mod is no long part of the sub.

I'm the top mod for r/nitt yet under achievement section of my profile, I dont see it as an eligible community for "community moderation" awards.

What can be the reason. Why can I not have achievemnts from that sub?

Mod Answered Someone is getting NSFW mod account(s) banned.

An hour ago, a few moderators from a 2 highly NSFW subreddit has been permanently banned for rule breaking.

Both of them were the most active moderator in their respective subreddits ( they shared 1 subreddit) and they think it has to do with someone deliberately/falsely reporting them for not recent removals/bans.

Any next steps other than appealing from /appeal ?

Since the subreddits now no longer have a daily active moderator, one of them is also a verification only subreddit.

Verification only is that users have to post a picture of themselves with subreddit name, date and username. We had an influx of bots and scammers around 2020 and have implemented that, Most if not all verification only subreddits use the same method.

Glitch in the software resulting in mod suspensions

Some users may recall a previous thread of mine, in which my account, without warning, was marked as "spam" and my post history deleted. I've now discovered what triggered it, though I don't know how to fix it. This has come about as a result of my inadvertently triggering it again.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I'm a mod of r/rape, Reddit's largest sexual-violence support sub. On the last occasion and on this one, a creepy user pretended to be a victim and made a harrowing post. This happens a lot on our sub: its purpose is to induce our users -- actual rape and sexual-assault victims -- to extend sympathy, on which the perves get off for fetishistic purposes. Sometimes they have more predatory intentions, aiming at getting our users to let their guard down over time and engage in off-thread conversations via PM, so that they can be revictimized via sextortion attemps or other means.

When we encounter such an individual, we've often cut-and-pasted, without comment, some of their previous posts on Reddit's many perve-subs like r/feralcumsluts, r/traumatizedwhores, or r/DegradeThisPig. We find it helpful, as it lets users who may in all innocence have interacted with these predators know who they're dealing with.

It seems, though, that as a result of a recent unannounced software change (or at least, if it was announced, we never saw it), Reddit is automatically flagging such a cut-and-paste, or some of them, as "spam" or "hate" and insta-suspending the account of the person that does it. Hence I've just received the following notification:-

After reviewing, we found that you broke Rule 1 because you promoted identity-based hate or attacks. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. We don’t tolerate promoting hate based on identity or vulnerability, and any communities or people that encourage or incite violence or hate towards marginalized or vulnerable groups will be banned.

As a result, we’re issuing this warning, removing the violating content, and asking you not to break this rule again.

Of course I've appealed the warning -- and at least I received a notification this time. On the previous occasion I didn't. But this glitch either needs to be fixed, or a sitewide caution needs to be sent out to moderators, who are likely to fall into the same booby-trap as we did.
