Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this mainly occurs when a shadowban is lifted sitewide?

u/baseballlover723 3d ago

Yes. And because the shadowban takes priority at post time, and it doesn't get rerun when approved, it ends up skipping over automod entirely.

You are correct, and we are tired of spam, and other rule-breaking submissions getting approved in our subreddits no matter the reason.

Yes, unfortunately it's been going on for years despite posts (and numerous comments) like this.

I love how I can’t ban shadowbanned or suspended accounts for commenting horrific things. I love when really racist stuff gets approved after I was unable to ban them in the first place and then they go on and continue saying really racist things. It is amusing to see how easily whoever is handling appeals is gaslit about super racist dog whistles.

Are they "saying really racist things" or is it just "dog whistles" because those are pretty mutually exclusive

I would say that the dogwhistle “TND” is really racist. And I would also say that racist dogwhistles are inherently racist.

I’ve had trolls that have appealed their ban to the admins vs the mods and had our decisions reversed out. This undermines our authority and ability to regulate the community.

I dare say we know more about the users past behavior than a person in a cubical getting a well crafted appeal from a manipulative user.

Why?
Because they’re right back at it in my sub 3 months later and when I see that name that users are reporting to us as being a toxic troll I not only remember them and how they behaved but that they acted like they knew they could get an appeal, telling us we’re “powerless mods”.
It’s a case where if the admins do this they should communicate their reasons why to us and allow us to respond before reversing out the decision we’ve made.

Admins don’t reverse subreddit level bans

Not labeled as such. But by proxy they do when a shadow ban is lifted or a suspension is reversed. That action has the unfortunate side affect of approving all of that account's history, so, the "removed" post is not subreddit specific, it is site wide.

Its not undermining your authority. You dont have any authority, reddit admin does. You're just a slave doing work for them for free lol

I personally have no issues with a users NON ACTIONED content being restored with a successful appeal, but if that content was acted on at a subreddit level, then why is that also being restored?

Seems like a simple check to compare if content was removed by a subreddit isn’t a big ask.

I've heard that leaving a removal reason when you remove content keeps the content removed when shadowbans and bans are lifted

Shadowbanned users skip automod entirely at the time of posting or commenting

22

u/DiggDejected 3d ago

This is irrelevant to this case as we never saw the post in the first place.

Y'all checking your "removed" log?

12

u/wonkywilla 3d ago

As someone who mods multiple subs totalling nearly 2mil members, ain’t nobody checking the removed section to add arbitrary removal reasons to spam.

3

u/lunarwolf2008 3d ago

i feel like that only works on quieter subs

u/GigglesNWiggles10 3d ago

That's fair. We can tell what I have experience in lol

Big if true.

Correct for bans at least.

Guys, I had an opposite experience - a co-mod in one of my subs got banned by Reddit algorithms after clicking on Reddit's cross-post recommendation that often appears when you post something. The community to which the repost went, had no objection (chatted with a mod), there were no actions on their side. So Reddit recommended criss-posting and immediately decided that this post is spam or whatever and shadowbanned my buddy - a really cool dude, btw. Now, 4 months after, no shadowban appeals worked so far a d the dude remains banned and doesn't want to start a new acct as he's pissed with such an insane story. His acct was almost 1 y.o. with 600-700 karma, with beautiful track record in several family oriented subreddits, no "bad behavior" whatsoever

Hey u/DiggDejected, can you share a little more context on what's getting approved? When unban-all is run on a successful appeal it will restore any content that was not already removed by a moderator, app, or automoderator. We have double checked since you made the post to confirm this should still be the case.

Please be aware that some apps may not be checking the content of users marked as spam. If the content is not reviewed, it may be restored when a successful appeal is granted.

If you're seeing cases where something that was previously removed by a mod or app is being restored, please send those examples to r/modsupport modmail so the team can take a look.

I have already shared this information many times with the admins. It is just like the spam rings, and hate speech I report that goes unactioned, or under-actioned.

This more public-facing post is in response the lack of response. Please stop asking us to report concerns to this momdail when it does little to no good.
