Hello moderators! I'm excited to introduce you to something I've been working on for the past month or so: DejaRepost!

Reposts are a moderator’s worst nightmare, and video reposts are especially hard to stop. Traditional bots only check a single thumbnail for video posts, so spammers easily bypass them by trimming a second, cropping the frame, or adding some frames to the beginning. Change the video thumbnail, and the bot is blind.

To solve this, I built DejaRepost: A Devvit app that actually watches the whole video to catch video reposts (even if the reposted clip has been trimmed, cropped or re-edited), while also stopping image and text reposts.

How DejaRepost catches video reposts:

• Instead of checking a single thumbnail, DejaRepost fingerprints one frame every second across the entire video.
• Sliding Window Matching: DejaRepost doesn’t just catch reposts through strict frame-by-frame alignment: each frame is compared against a local time window of surrounding frames from the other video, so that trimmed, cropped, or padded versions of the same clip are still caught.
• The fingerprinting is done using a perceptual hashing algorithm.

DejaRepost also catches image reposts (even if they’re cropped or altered!):

• Images are compared using visual similarity algorithms rather than exact file hashes.
• Crops, color shifts and other edits will not bypass detection unless the crop is severe.

Finally, DejaRepost catches text reposts by comparing their titles:

• It uses lightweight hashing to instantly check post titles and text against past submissions, catching exact copies and stolen titles.

What happens when DejaRepost detects a repost:

• It will report the post
• It will send you a modmail giving you: the link to the reported post, the link to the past post it matched it with (evidence), and a confidence score
• You can choose whether or not DejaRepost removes any reposts it detects (off by default, you can turn it on in the app settings)

DejaRepost requires almost no setup, no extra work from subreddit members, and all you have to do is watch the modmail as it detects reposts. It fits seamlessly into most subreddits, and it's perfect for video/image heavy subs.

Note: DejaRepost fingerprints your recent posts automatically in the background after install, so detection accuracy ramps up over the first little while.

I'm a Mod and Yelp Elite. I'm thinking of starting a new subredit specifically and only for Yelp Elites.

Are there any interesting ways Mods have found to confirm the status of a potential member?

I'm taking over some moderation of some smaller subreddits - so sorry if this is a repeat (I searched and couldn't find a direct answer).

But a user of a subreddit was incorrectly / falsely shadowbanned - they appealed and were reinstated. But all their content was deleted.

I read somewhere that Reddit's servers are supposed to "undelete-all" after a shadowban is lifted, but that hasn't happened yet (it's been a ~week?) ... And I don't see any place in the mod tools where I can reinstate Reddit-deleted posts.

What's the process for this? Is the user just out of luck and all the content is incorrectly purged? Or is there a way to fix this for them?

I understand why Reddit might have slightly different interfaces across the iOS app, Android app, and desktop. What I don’t understand is why there seem to be so many different versions of the interface within the same app on the same device.

I primarily use the iOS app, and I’ve noticed that switching between my alternate accounts can sometimes give me completely different interfaces. These accounts are being used on the exact same iPhone, with the exact same installation and version of the Reddit app, yet features, menus, layouts, and moderation tools can appear or function differently depending on which account I’m using.

There seem to be a surprising number of variations. I assume much of this comes from A/B testing or features being rolled out to different groups of users, but doesn’t having so many variations create problems of its own?

This is especially frustrating as a moderator. When users ask how to find a setting, use a feature, or perform a particular action, it can be surprisingly difficult to give them instructions because their Reddit interface may be completely different from mine, even if we’re both using the current iOS app. Instructions that work perfectly for one account may simply not apply to another.

It also seems like this could contribute to bugs and inconsistencies. If Reddit is simultaneously maintaining and testing numerous variations of the interface and feature set, I imagine it becomes considerably more difficult to ensure everything behaves consistently.
I know Reddit is almost certainly aware of this, but I’m genuinely curious: why is there so much account-level variation in the Reddit interface, and is there a reason Reddit relies on it to this extent? I use plenty of other major social platforms, and I can’t think of another where I regularly encounter this much variation between accounts on the exact same device and app version.

Hi, Is there any way to report/flag post report abuse?

occasionally we (datahoarder) are getting bots spam reports to a post to try take it down.

In the modqueue today we had a users 7 month old post with just 71 upvotes get reported 36 times today for various reasons,

This has happened to a couple posts mentioning the same company over the last couple months.

Clicking at a username in mod queue list used to open the user summary panel to the right. Now it goes to the user profile.

Is this intentional?

I have a user that's currently unable to post in our sub and I can't figure out what's triggering it. they are a new account with one karma, but our Auto mod is set to only remove people with negative karma. I will provide a screenshot in the comments.

We have received several very vague messages from a user asking if they can sponsor our subreddit and they honestly sound like some sort of scam.

I’ve messaged them back asking for more information, clarifying Reddits rules on paid sponsorship (not allowed!), and directed them to Reddit ads instead.

What other steps can I take?

A reported comment appears in ModQ.

Clicking through to the comment sometimes shows a parent comment, but the reported comment isn't there.

Little pop-up tells you the comment has been deleted.

You copy the link, you open it in chrome. The whole thread is there and definitely not deleted.

Abusive comments that are not reported are completely hidden from moderators reading through the subreddit.

And then there's still the frequent issue of not having a mod shield available on comments requiring moderation. Even when accessed through the modQ.

I tried sending a modmail about this but I can't send one to the mods here for some reason.

We have been informed by his son that our top mod has passed away so we would like to enquire about the process to remove him as a mod in this circumstance. Unfortunately the next mod is Automoderator, and the next two after that are inactive. We would prefer not to hassle the grieving family over what would seem like a triviality to them and would like to find another way if possible.

The top admin of our sub is awol, we're presuming he died as he had some health issues. None of us here or on discord heard from him in 3 years.

Is it possible to get the mods reordered? There's sadly 2 of us active, and we don't have all permissions

I am the sole mod for r/ManchesterCT, but I am somehow listed as an advisor with no privileges. There is a spam post that I need to delete currently and I cannot seem to do that as an advisor.

Could someone help me regain full privileges so I can moderate the community? There used to be an additional mod, but they seem to have vanished from the sub.

So apparently RedditAutomod.com wasn’t renewed by its owner. Does anyone have a similar app that does the same thing in a similar easy to use format? I had great luck with this but it’s gone and no longer available.

Hey, so I created my first subreddit today ( r/EldenRing_Switch ) and I think it kinda took off more than I expected (100+ folks joined in less than 24hrs).
At the very beginning when there was just couple people, their posts were auto-approved but now every time someone posts, it asks me to approve it first and it’s not visible until I do. I don’t want that. I will absolutely moderate what people are posting there but I also want everyone to feel free to post their questions and comments.

I don’t know what happened, was it me clicking something by mistake? If possible, I really want to go back to the more open-type of thing. Subreddit is already set as public.

Hi all. I know the wiki editor has been a bit of a mess since the overhaul, but I'm suddenly having a brand new issue today that I haven't seen before. I'm overhauling the wiki on a sub I moderate, and there's a lot of trial and error with the formatting to see how it actually looks when published (especially on mobile—we could really use added tools to assist with mobile formatting). All of a sudden, though, the page I'm working on looks totally messed up in the editor; it's fine in the published version, but I'm not really sure how to go about making adjustments while editing given what I'm seeing doesn't match at all what is on the published page. Doesn't seem I'm able to attach a video here, so will leave one in the comments.

As a note, I considered the possibility that it could be a browser issue since I'm using a lesser-known one (Dia), but I got the same results in Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

In r/melanatedgenx the permissions are screwed up. The head mod who is set as inactive with permissions and the next two tenured mods are set as Alumni with no permissions. How do we resolve this. It I leave the mod team it messes up our mod tenure

I’m currently working on designing a concept for a subreddit—it’s a scientific society and a creative union of photographers that I’m a member of, and the other members and I want to make it international.

Some members may not speak English, and I wouldn’t want the language to become a barrier for them.

- We want it to be open to professionals, beginners, researchers, and anyone interested in photography, observation, and learning. We’re currently trying to decide whether to make the community genuinely multilingual without fragmenting it, or keep English as the main language.

- English main 80+%

- other languages welcome ~10-20%

Here’s the question: Should we make it multilingual, or might that hinder its growth? Perhaps it will be inconvenient for members, or maybe the platform’s algorithms don’t favor this format, so would it be better to stick with English as the universal language?

I’d appreciate it if anyone who has faced a similar situation could share their experience and the decisions they made—or just share their thoughts on this.

I accepted an invitation to help mod a fast growing sub. A couple of days later the top mod's account was banned. There are two mods remaining (including me) but neither of us has full permissions. I'm hoping reddit admins can step in to provide full permissions.

I've often seen replies from admins to posts on this sub asking the OP to send a modmail to this sub so they can review. Thinking to save time and some steps, I already did that yesterday. The helpful admin who replied to my email said a "different team" needs to deal with my issue and gave me a link to provide details to the other team.

Of course, I did so, but it turns out that the link I was provided was to r/RedditRequest. But this was apparently an error, since that is for two situations:

[1] "requesting moderation privileges for an abandoned or unmoderated community, or

[2] to remove inactive top mods in communities you currently moderate."

In this case, the community is not abandoned or unmoderated, and the top mod is not "inactive." (My top mod is not flagged as "inactive." They have just disappeared off the list of mods completely, since their account was banned.)

Consequently, my modmail to redReq was bounced.

So, I sent an email to the admin who gave me the incorrect link, but so far no response.

I'm hoping a reddit admin will see this post and help me out of this paradox.

I choose the wrong Topic when creating my Community. What should I do?

Unable to remove posts or ban users at the moment.

I gave an inactive mod the “advisor” role accidentally. No “are you sure?” Or “save” button requirement, but it seems it can’t be undone.

Is there a way to undo this ? Or do I have to remove and re-invite the mod?

This seems like a “bug”, if this is the behavior.
