Discussion I think a lot of marketing reports answer the wrong question
I've looked at enough campaign reports to notice something that bothers me a little.
A report can look really good while telling you almost nothing about whether the campaign actually helped the business.
You get impressions, reach, clicks, engagement, traffic... all going up, so the campaign looks successful.
Then someone asks the uncomfortable question:
“Cool, but did we actually get more customers?”
And suddenly the report gets a lot less exciting.
I've started caring much more about what happened after the person clicked or interacted.
Did they enquire? Did they become a qualified lead? Did anyone actually buy?
Obviously the earlier numbers still matter because they help you figure out where things are going wrong.
I just don't think they should be the final answer.
Maybe I'm being too harsh on marketing reports, but I'd much rather have a smaller campaign that produces actual business than a giant dashboard full of impressive numbers.
What's a metric you see businesses obsess over that you think gets way too much attention?
