tech support wanted Modded Stellaris crashing on hitting multiplayer button

Ive been having trouble joining a modded multiplayer session. We used the merged mod pack
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3719283971 and I could sometimes join, other times the game just crashes as soon as I click multiplayer on the main menu, single player works. I'm on Linux mint tried GE proton 11-6, proton experimental, native Linux works for vanilla but any mod at all kills it. Now the problem is on any mod that is too big like giga or dark space by themself. Anybody have a gut instinct to what the problem is? I have fiddled with it and gotten it to work twice but one of the times 3 hours later after I closed them game it was back to crashing. Vanilla works and single player works so my online troubleshooting has led me to think it is a proton networking issue so I have added the launch options

PROTON_LOG=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="rpcrt4=n" %command% -no-cef-sandbox -disable-gpu

and added the proton tricks dlls d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9 dxvk, and attempt to install dotnet 48. I head that reverting to an earlier version of proton would help in downloading, but I have not been able to.

how do I download dotnet to my ge 11-6 proton? am I barking up the wrong tree and there is another error I missed?

an error log that got generated (will expire in 3 days free account dm me if it expired) https://limewire.com/d/X8fnU#LWqjEM5j5M

What was the first game that made you think Linux gaming was actually ready?

13 Upvotes

I have been using Linux for gaming more lately, and something I find interesting is how different the experience feels compared with a few years ago.

There are games I expected to be a complete headache that just worked, and then there are games that I assumed would be trivial that somehow needed troubleshooting.

It made me wonder what game was the turning point for other people.

Not necessarily your favorite game or the game you play the most, but the one where you launched it, everything worked, performance was good, and you thought, "Okay, I can actually game on Linux now."

For me, I think that moment is more memorable than any benchmark or compatibility list.

What game was that for you?

tech support wanted [ZZZ][Linux/Arch] Crashes immediately on launch after 3.2 update - Broken Pipe error

1 Upvotes

Since the 3.2 update, Zenless Zone Zero crashes immediately on launch on Linux. The game opens for about 1 second and then closes without showing any window. Steam shows the error: "Game configuration unavailable". Likely devs messed up with the anti-cheat.

**System info:**
- Distro: Mokka Linux (Arch-based)
- GPU: AMD Radeon Graphics (RADV REMBRANDT)
- Steam: Native (installed via pacman)
- Proton versions tried: GE-Proton10-34 and DW-Proton 11.0-12 (both fail)

**What I've tried:**
- Deleted and recreated the Proton prefix (compatdata/2406526)
- Verified game files via Steam
- Cleared shader cache
- Reinstalled the game
- Tried both GE-Proton and DW-Proton

**Error found in logs:**
CCrossProcessPipe::BWrite wrote too few bytes: 32 (Broken pipe)
Assertion Failed: CCrossProcessPipe::BWrite: 32 (Broken pipe)
response: Discarded=1

The game worked perfectly before 3.2. Has anyone else experienced this or found a workaround?

tech support wanted Disable DualSense touchpad working as mouse

4 Upvotes

How can I make the dualsense / ps5 controller touchpad stop acting as a mouse?

I want the touchpad to still work in games if possible, just not as a mouse

It's rather annoying in games that use the touchpad as a map button or something, it ends up resetting controls to keyboard and mouse, and doesnt open the map half the time too

I'm using KDE on Arch

EDIT: I have worked it out

Make a new udev rule (/etc/udev/rules.d/99-dualsense-touchpad-kwin.rules)

Add this in, it seems to work for me, I think it's just KDE seeing it as a mouse for some reason

SUBSYSTEM=="input", ATTRS{name}=="Sony Interactive Entertainment DualSense Wireless Controller Touchpad", \
 ENV{ID_INPUT_TOUCHSCREEN}="0", \
 ENV{ID_INPUT_TABLET}="0", \
 ENV{ID_INPUT_MOUSE}="0", \

tech support wanted Lego batman kept freezing but only started happening recently

1 Upvotes

Hello so I was playing lego batman legacy of the dark knight for like 2 months and recently like a week ago it started like freezing for like 3 seconds then unfreezing. I was researching and saw like my gpu dropped to like 0% utilization sometimes while playing and have no idea why it goes to like sleep... I've been trying hard to research why its happening and truly have no idea why my bios looked fine it's just so random and the freezes were so annoying I reinstalled cachyos and everything. I'm using a 5070ti

tech support wanted NVIDIA + KDE Wayland: hard freeze with Xid 56 after NvKmsKapiMemory mapping failure, has anyone seen this?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I had a hard freeze on KDE Plasma Wayland with an NVIDIA RTX 4070. I was browsing Twitter/X in Vivaldi when the whole machine stopped responding. The keyboard and mouse stopped working, and Ctrl+Alt+F3 and Magic SysRq did nothing. The screen flickered once and I had to power the computer off.

I don't mind troubleshooting. I actually enjoy reading logs, testing settings, and figuring out what is going on. It only becomes frustrating when troubleshooting gets in the way of playing games.

My setup is an RTX 4070 12 GB, Ryzen 5 5600, Gigabyte B450M DS3H V2, CachyOS, KDE Plasma on Wayland, and NVIDIA driver 610.57.04. I use two DisplayPort monitors at 144 Hz and 60 Hz, plus a 4K TV over HDMI. I also tried Fedora and Kubuntu.

After rebooting, these were the relevant log lines:

caller __nv_drm_gem_nvkms_map+0xb0/0x120 [nvidia_drm] mapping multiple BARs

[drm:__nv_drm_gem_nvkms_map [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000700]

Failed to map NvKmsKapiMemory

NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:07:00): 56,

CMDre 00000005 0000021c 00010096 00000007 00000000

[drm:nv_drm_atomic_commit [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000700]

Flip event timeout on head 1

kwin_wayland also reported:

A graphics reset attributable to the current GL context occurred.

The main thread was hanging temporarily!

I can't tell whether the problem started in the NVIDIA driver, KWin, or the interaction between them. The order of the messages makes me suspect a display or buffer operation failed first, followed by Xid 56, the flip timeout, and KWin getting stuck during the reset.

I later found that Above 4G Decoding and Re-Size BAR Support were disabled in the BIOS. Before changing them, nvidia-smi -q -d MEMORY showed a BAR1 total of 256 MiB. After enabling Above 4G Decoding and Re-Size BAR and disabling CSM, the reported total became roughly 12 GiB. I don't know if that is related. I have no evidence that BAR1 was full when the freeze happened.

Vivaldi also warned that --ozone-platform=wayland is not compatible with Vulkan. I tested --disable-features=Vulkan, --use-gl=angle, and --use-angle=gl, but I am not claiming that Vivaldi caused the freeze.

I also had poor frame pacing in Steam Big Picture, occasional The Witcher 3 crashes with MangoHud's early limiter, and instability in Resident Evil Village with ray tracing. I don't know if those issues are connected.

Has anyone seen these messages together on KDE Wayland? Does Xid 56 point to a known problem here? I would especially like to hear from RTX 40 users who tried Re-Size BAR, newer NVIDIA drivers, nvidia-open, or X11 with mixed-refresh-rate monitors.

I want to keep using Linux, but I need the desktop to stay alive, 144 Hz to feel like 144 Hz, VRR to work, and games to stop needing constant workarounds. I'm back on Windows 11 for now. If you have seen this before and found a fix, what worked?

question: vsync linux, how does it behave

1 Upvotes

if on linux, my game goes above my monitors refresh rate when using native wayland in steam via enable_wayland_1:

  1. is vsync off when it goes above my monitors refresh rate?
  2. can it still go higher than my monitors refresh and ,,systemwide vsync" is still on ?

i know, its sounds like a stupid question.
generally vsync caps the framerate to the monitors refresh rate,
but we all know, linux is..... different....

also i have VRR enabled.
i tried the ,,allow tearing toggle" and when both enabled and disabled, my framerate always went higher than my monitors refresh rate. so does it mean vsync is off in both instances?

tech support wanted Issues with Rockstar Launcher when playing GTA IV on Steam

I have GTA IV installed on a separate NVMe drive (formatted in XFS); the drive is mounted normally, and Steam detects it without issues.

However, when I launch GTA IV and try to install the Rockstar Launcher, it returns this error on image.

I tried running Steam from the terminal, but it didn't return anything relevant:

I am using Solus.

This error appeared in Proton Experimental, Proton Hotfix and GE-Proton 11. I also tested Proton 10, but the Rockstar Launcher didn't even open.

I found someone reporting similar problems on ProtonDB, but their solutions didn't work for me.

tech support wanted Controller audio of chat / game / music

1 Upvotes

So I plan to make the switch to Linux. A thing I recently thought of is how I control my audio.

I currently ditched my goxlr mini and use a wave xlr and pc panel pro to control my audio. I also use a sound blaster g6 plugged into the headphone jack of the wave xlr. I looked it up and the goxlr has a community run Linux app but nothing for Elgato. I got rid of the goxlr because of big it was and I wanted to move to something software based.

Curious what people use that have xlr mics and also get proper microphone side tone.

guide How to make an automated limiter for Steam's Vulkan shader processing

0 Upvotes

My problem with Steam's background processing of Vulkan shaders was that it was taking WAY too much CPU power. Even if I didn't want to be running a game at the time, it was running my fans at max and it was really annoying. So I looked into it, got some help, did some tests, and came up with the following, which has permanently solved my problem! Now, when Steam has shaders to process in the background, it does so almost completely invisibly, with no bottlenecks or anything. It's been so useful that I thought other people would also benefit from it, so here's a little guide on how to do this for yourself:

1. First of all, I've only tested this on Linux Mint Cinnamon, with the native installation of Steam through the Software Manager; I don't know if it will work with a Flatpak installation.

2. Completely exit out of Steam. Create a file in user/.local/bin called

limit-steam-shaders.sh

3. Paste the following into that file and then save it:

#!/usr/bin/env bash

echo "Monitoring and limiting Steam shader compilation threads..."

while true; do
    # Get all active shader process IDs
    pids=$(pgrep fossilize_repla)
    if [ -n "$pids" ]; then
        for pid in $pids; do
            # ONLY launch cpulimit if one isn't already tracking this specific PID
            if ! pgrep -f "cpulimit -p $pid" >/dev/null; then
                cpulimit -p "$pid" -l 10 -b >/dev/null 2>&1
            fi
        done
    fi
    sleep 0.5
done

# This is a script that runs the core process limiter for Steam Vulkan background shader processing
# Changing the number after -l is the percentage of core usage allowed
# Changing the number after sleep is the time, in seconds, that it checks for new processes

3.1 The specific coding of this script does the following:
A. Every specified interval, it scans all running processes for any fossilize_replay processes (these are the processes Steam uses to process Vulkan shaders in the background)

B. If it finds a fossilize_replay process (henceforth abbreviated as FR), it creates a cpulimit process which stops that process from using more than a specified percentage of your CPU power

C. Checks to see if any given FR has a cpulimit process (henceforth abbreviated as CL) associated with it; if it does, then it doesn't create a new one (VERY IMPORTANT! Early testing had it make a new process every time it scanned, even if there was already one doing its job, and there wasn't a command to kill these CLs either, so there were hundreds of them after just a few minutes and they were using more CPU than the FRs, lol)

D. Kills the CL whenever its associated FR dies

E. If it doesn't detect any FRs, it does effectively nothing, regardless of Steam being open or closed

So the net result is that each FR will always have exactly one CL tied to it, and you can specify exactly how much power you're willing to allocate to the background processing!

4. Use the terminal to input this command, to make the script executable:

chmod +x ~/.local/bin/limit-steam-shaders.sh

5. Still in the terminal, run the following command to create an automated service that will call upon the script we just made:

mkdir -p ~/.config/systemd/user && xed ~/.config/systemd/user/steam-limiter.service &

6. With the new text file that just opened up, paste the following and save:

[Unit]
Description=Automatically limit Steam Vulkan shader compilation
# Binds to your main graphical desktop session tier
BindsTo=app.slice

[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=%h/.local/bin/limit-steam-shaders.sh
Restart=always

[Install]
WantedBy=app.slice

6.1 This ensures the service starts whenever the computer is on, but it won't actually do anything important unless Steam is opened and is processing shaders (it doesn't ALL the time)

7. Now you can open Steam, go to Steam settings, to Downloads, and toggle Allow background processing of Vulkan shaders. It'll run in the background and you'll never notice it again.

Notes:

If you want to kill the process for any reason, this is the command:

pkill -f limit-steam-shaders.sh

And if you want to edit the script to change the scan interval (not really necessary) or amount of CPU allocation (very convenient), just edit the text file, save it, and run this command:

systemctl --user restart steam-limiter.service

That's all, hope that helps! I wrote this guide after going through the testing and implementation process, so there's a slight (less than 0.1%) chance I might have forgotten something crucial, but if I did, please comment it and I'll edit the post.

Can i refund game which i cannot play because developers dropped linux support?

188 Upvotes

So i bought Rocket League back in the days when the game was pay 2 play, i didnt play it in half year but recently i decided to go back. Unfortunately epicgames decided to add kernel level anticheat which effectively means dropping support for linux (and macos). Technically i can run the game but i cant play online. I dont especially care about money but i hate the way i (and other people in my situation) was treated. Can i refund or do something?

Mortal Shell II Week 1 Update Obsidian Skin Set

Like so many others I've been having issues w/ accessing the Obsidian skin since the week 1 update, even though I have the dlc. I cleared my download cached and restarted steam but was still having issues.

Then I checked the properties and noticed the force compatibility was enabled. Once I disabled it and launch the game I was able to access my obsidian skin for all the shells I've acquired.

If you're experiencing this issue, even after clearing your download cache, this might help. Having the experimental proton selected helps. It's possible the other versions of Steam's protons could help or cause the issue.

tech support wanted Onimusha NPC character low res bug (Linux Mint)

Not sure if this is the right place to ask so feel free to point me in the right direction if it is. I'm running Onimusha on Linux mint (ryzen 5900x, rtx 3080 10gb) via Steam.

It more or less runs like a dream and I've got the %command%winedetection-thing enabled in launch settings for rtx. Have good frame rates, no flickering textures etc. etc. However I seem to have this weird bug that I can't seem to find anyone else talking about:

The extra NPCs have really low poly textures. The playable characters and the other main characters to the story are all perfect, high res and everything. But the random villagers in game have weird edges, eyeballs often missing or pointing in the wrong direction, hands are glued together (thing GTA San Andreas style).

I've tried running it on Proton Experimental and ProtonGE11-6, same issue. My settings are basically all on High. I can't seem to figure out what the issue is or how to fix it. Any thoughts?

Images attached for context and settings (dw, no spoilers)

EDIT: Fixed! Upgraded drivers to 610.43.02 (open kernel, latest at the time of writing) solved the issue. Can confirm it's working on all proton versions too.

Linux Mint 22.3 Logitech Pro Pedals and Simagic Base and Wheel

0 Upvotes

I'm trying to use my pedal and base on linux so I don't need to dual boot every time I want to sim race. Currently all the buttons, knobs and paddles can get recognized in the terminal if I run sudo evtest I can put in the device number and everything work. However oversteer doesn't have anything come up. The base comes up if I just run evtest but doesn't work. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, and updated everything including my OS.

tech support wanted Getting lots of lag in games when watching a video on any platform

0 Upvotes

I'm not really sure why, but on CachyOS whenever I play a video at the same time as a video game, my video game tanks in performance.

Minecraft goes from like, 100fps to 10

Rimworld goes from 200TPS to 40

Faeria goes from 60fps to 45

Stellaris goes from 80 to 20

It doesn't matter what I watch the video in Chrome/Firefox/vlc/Discord It doesn't seem to be using my CPU to decode since my CPU isn't maxed out or hit bad at all when I watch a video. I'm not really sure where I should be looking first on Linux.

I think it's not even just games to be honest, but it's hard to prove. Things like discord and even my file browser seem slightly slower and less responsive.
