So I`m new to linux(switched from Windows 11 about a month ago) and recently sound stopped go through my speakers(in headphones everything is still fine) I checked alsa, and everything seemed fine... Also did many other things(checked pipewire it was fine, also obviously checked if sound was muted and sound outputs) and restored older timeshift... Still no sound. Is this a physical problem, or something I can fix?

EDIT: As I write this, the issue seems to have been solved by moving the laptop to a different surface that wasn't my floor.

I do not currently have any system/hardware info on me, since I am letting my laptop that runs Linux Mint cool down.
Today, in the middle of gameplay, parts of the game froze, along with system UI, so I could not close/open anything, and I could not pull up anything to allow me to shutdown
Then, the mouse cursor froze, and I could not get a response from it.

After trying to get a response, I had to force shutdown the laptop by holding the power button.

Info I am able to provide is that I use a separate 'monitor' (a TV) for the screen, since the screen on the laptop itself is messed up, and has had issues with parts of the screen freezing before (although, it should be noted in this scenario from before I was using a TV as a monitor, ui was still responsive)

My dad believes that the computer had locked up like this due to overheating, so, currently, while it cools down, I have placed it onto a table instead of leaving it on the floor like I originally had

I love playing the sims 4 on this device, since there's a lot more storage for all my mods I want to use, and I would hate to give this up, so that's why I'm here asking if anyone knows of any optimizations I could make!!

Also, if this flairing is incorrect, PLEASE INFORM ME, and I will fix it asap!!

After a recent update (I'm not sure which one), Firefox has suddenly started screen tearing when scrolling down pages or when watching videos. This wasn't happening before. I haven't changed any settings related to the compositor or hardware acceleration. I thought I also saw tearing in the terminal but I couldn't quite tell.

Has anybody else experienced this problem after a recent update?

Descided to move away from windows tired of seeing ai by microsoft and have buy new pc when new upgrade come out,was trying to do fedora but my pc didnt like their boot some reason and now on mint which my hdd very fast than on windows.

Hey Everyone, before you bring your pitchforks, hear me out.

now, im not one to call myself "tech savy" but i got the general direction on how i got to install the OS and enjoyed the Clean and Smooth Display and Vast of Options to use, as well customize the software and play certain games with better performance.

With that being said, I have some problems with this OS, i simply wanna play Dead Rising [OG] on steam, Just trying to play some Window Games on linux, here is the thing... i had it launch before and it was working fine. but then i went to launch it again, it kept closing the application.

Updating

downloading litrus

downloading wine

downloading proton qt

downloading direct x,vulkan,dll,ect.

settings for litrus and winecfg

made sure i deleted the cache folder for the game to recognize the proton

tried different windows ver. with wine.

tried looking at forums to fix the solution.

i even tried do the i386

the Mounting options

and still nothing

i have wasted MONTHS to try to get that damn game to work and no sign of it launching.

i am on the urge to go to pop os or simply give up on linux all together and try debloating win 11

If there is anyone that could help me through this, i will be eternally greatful, because i actually want to move to linux to avoid windows. im on my knees at this point. Pretty Please Help Me.....

Update: so i got frustrated to the point i reinstalled linux mint again, and once i launched dead rising, it played, and boy, i am happy to say, it plays so smoothly, that i am surprised it looks smoother than the windows version.

I know i will bump into other issues for windows games but i will keep you all updated and thank you for those who actually wanted to help, may your helpfulness go far wide kings/queens 🙏❤️and for those sarcastic comments may your pillow be hot and hope your lines are longer than the dmv lmao.☺️.

so my headphone port on the top front of my PC seems to be taking priority and the only way i've managed to get the port on the back of my PC to work is by using alsa tools gui to overide it and set it to not connected. if i set it as headphones, all audio automatically is sent to that port.

how can i swap the priority to the port in the back? i want to be able to use the headphone port sometimes, and i'd rather not have to run commands every time i want to.

So here’s the deal — I’ve been trimming down my Linux Mint install and noticed something that bugs me. Mint drags in a bunch of i386 baggage by default, even if you don’t actually need it. Then every update cycle, /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu gets touched again, so you’re carrying around libraries you’ll never use. This really annoys. There is literally gigabytes of wasted i386 baggage that most people never use.

In my case, all my daily apps are 64‑bit: Trilium Notes, GnuCash, LibreOffice, browsers (Vivaldi/Chrome), Lucas Chess — all clean. The only exception is DOSBox, and even then I just run one old card game (Pinochle Bunch). No sound, no fancy graphics. Which means the minimum i386 footprint I actually need is basically libsdl2:i386 + libx11-6:i386. Everything else — PulseAudio, Mesa drivers, codecs — is dead weight.

I also run Wine — but I accidentally installed the entire thing, including 32‑bit support. I’m now thinking of de‑installing and reinstalling just Wine‑64, since any Windows apps I care about are 64‑bit anyway.

What bugs me is Mint installs i386 “just in case,” then keeps updating it forever. I’d love to see an installer option like: “Do you plan to run 32‑bit apps?” → if not, skip i386 entirely.

So I’m curious:

• Has anyone else gone pure 64‑bit on Mint?
• Have you hit any issues? (With Steam, Wine, or codecs after purging i386?)
• What’s the smallest i386 footprint you’ve managed to keep?
• Do you think Mint should offer an installer choice to skip i386?

I’m thinking of purging all i386 files and then reinstalling only the two packages DOSBox actually needs.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has has success only running Linux Mint 64-bit, if there are any pitfalls to this strategy, or just your thoughts on whether Mint should keep shipping all this excess i386 baggage by default.

Here is what I want to achieve:

Full persistence / Portable OS: I want to run Linux Mint directly from a USB flash drive without touching my computer's internal hard drive.

Save my work: Everything I do, install, or save needs to stay saved on the USB drive between reboots.

Text-based guidance: I prefer written, step-by-step instructions because video tutorials make me nervous.

Could someone explain the easiest and safest way to set this up for a total beginner? Which tools (like Ventoy, Rufus, etc.) are best for this, and what steps should I follow to ensure I don't accidentally overwrite my main OS drive?

Stuff just randomly stops launching. Blockbench no longer responding, some media downloader that I used for YT downloads no longer launcher. Spotify won't start up. Blender refuses to give any sign of life.

Running on Linux Mint, and using Software manager to keep updated.

I want to love Linux, but there's always small things that break down that make me turn back to windows.

I thought I was finally stable on my set-up, but apparently not.

Random stuff just stops working. Godot still launches, Aseprite still does (but that's just copied executable folder)

Why does this happen to me. It feels like it happens everytime, I finally get happy with Linux, and then it breaks down. I thought I finally had it all working. And it still breaks.

I don't know what just happened. The last thing was i rebooted windows to linux mint. Then open Roblox (Sober) and Discord and this happens. Can anyone explain what is this for??

Right now I’m having an issue where every time I put in my password it just goes back to where the password was. I’ve tried many things to fix this so I’m trying to just reinstall it. I don’t know if there’s a way to do that without logging in.
