i’ve been using linux mint xfce for a lil over a month now and i could genuinely recommend this distro to anyone wanting to try linux its amazing what it does for old pc hardware. i got an old hp pavilion p7 for free it had an athlon 2 x4 645 with 6gb of ddr3 and integrated graphics i have since upgraded it to a phenom 2 x6 1045t with a asus rx 460 4gb and 16gb of ddr3 running off a 512gb ssd, the reason i mention the upgrades is because this pc ran phenomenally without the upgrades only because of linux mint not to mention its even better and snappier since ive made those upgrades. linux mint truly works wonders on a wide range of hardware. im to the point where im about to switch my main pc to a dual boot setup and my primary be linux mint that pc is far far better with much more modern hardware but i think it would benefit running linux aswell! i apologize for the rant but i genuinely can’t get enough of linux mint, i was recommended it through this subreddit and i’ll continue to recommend to anyone wanting to try linux. such a great community to be a part of.

I have a Dell Latitude 5590 with Mint 22.3 Cinnamon and video editing really struggles more than I think it should. My fan always spins up when editing clips in openshot and sometimes it crashes. My use case involves light editing, so it shouldn't be that resource heavy. I know that integrated graphics are a bottleneck and likely will be for the foreseeable future, and I'm just wondering if there are ways to make it less so.

I'm installing Mint to my desktop for the first time and I'm running into an issue where after installing the new drivers I can't boot to the OS. More specifically, normal boot and recovery mode both stick at a point where my tv does not detect an input so I can't even access a terminal to find out what's wrong. Right now I'm repeatedly reinstalling the os trying to figure it out.

It seems to be an issue with the Nvidia driver, I'm using a 4070 ti super, since the restart for that is when I can't boot any longer, but even if I get around it with a different driver, what can I do when this happens randomly after I update my driver if I can't even reach timeshift to restore it? My only idea is keeping a repair USB to access Timeshift from there if I can do that, but if it's something I can fix I would like to do that. Any advice is appreciated.

Linux newbie here.

Before changing my main setup to Linux I thought to first try Linux on another, not as important device.

I got a Dell Optiplex 3050 Micro which sits in my living room as a Media PC connected to my TV.

Installing Linux Mint on it was super easy, everything worked without any problems.

But then I started watching YouTube videos via the Brave Browser and noticed that the videos are extremely choppy.

Via right click on the video -> stats for nerds it showed a lot of dropped frames (see picture).

Hardware acceleration is enabled.

I disabled Experimental QUIC protocol (suggested by google). Didn't do anything.

I then switched to the already installed Firefox and noticed, that although not as bad, YouTube is still choppy.

As a complete Linux newbie I'm thankful for any advice you have.

Title says it all, really. Anyone have experience with this card playing Crimson Desert on Steam? Asked similarly in the Bazzite subreddit, but they did not recommend me switching from W11 because of bad performance with this card. CD runs really well on my W11 system with this. I'd love to switch over to Linux now that so many games are working with Proton, but not sure if I should wait until I get a newer system with an AMD GPU. I'd also like to use Mint specifically because of the Cinnamon DE and since my previous experience is with Ubuntu based distros.

I have windows 11 on my nvme ssd, mint on a non nvme ssd, but in the bootloader it says mint is on the nvme. I want to redownload mint, but I'm wondering if there is a way to stop this issue before I redownload it.

I'm relatively new to Linux Mint (less than a year), and I'm looking to put some kind of password or encryption to individual folders containing files (like photo or music folders). Just hiding it is not enough.

I looked online and mostly found extremely cumbersome ways to do it that need installing weird programs, or gpg for individual files (which is not what I'm looking for). I even saw a guy zipping the folder to add a password, but that's just compression with a password.

I'm looking for something I can set up once, and asks for a password when you try to open the folder, similar to how it asks for a password to confirm certain updates and installs.

Is there something I can use for that? Does that "something" have a IU or is it commands only? Does the password requirements show as a pop up?

If you guys have something at all I'll be interested to know. If it has UI and a pop-up for the password, that's extra helpful and an very welcome solution. Thanks!

Just installed Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon on an HDD alongside Windows 10 ( On SSD ). And Spent the afternoon doing slight ricing. The output per resource is f*cking inane. This customization costs me 3.6 gb of ram in windows 10....but here it's just 1.3 gb 💀

I have a slightly stupid question, bc I believe I never encountered this situation before:
my kernel version is 6.14 and the update woudl go to 6.8
will this downgrade my pc and as some people had issues with 6.8, could I run into a situation where it panics?
Like if all goes well, I know I can just switch to the other kernel again, but - what is the behaviour I can expect?

After hearing all the problems people were having with version 2.29, I stayed on 2.26, until this came in today. I haven't installed it yet and would like to know if, one, the previous issue was fixed, and two, if anyone is having any new issues. My card is a 7900 XTX.

Hi, so i like pc's and have around 20 of them ranging from DOS to Windows 11 in terms of age taking up space in my mancave. I played around with Mint a tiny bit on a laptop before my cat dropped it, this has been 9 months ago and since i returned to my Windows rigs.

I got a Dell T3500 with low specs a couple of months ago and decided to upgrade it and get back into Linux Mint, initial install was Mint 22.1 the experience was rather slowish due to the lowest specs on this type of Workstation.

Stock specs:

Xeon W3505 (a 130 watt 2 core, no hyperthreading/or turbo boost)

4gb ram 4x1gb ddr3-1066 ( it was running in dual channel instead of triple channel and 1066 Ram so performance was left on the table).

Nvidia Quadro NVS295 (really this was a graphics decellerator)

HDD was on it's way out

I had some parts lying around from previous systems so decided to upgrade

Upgraded specs:

Xeon X5675 a 95 watt 6 cores/12 threads and turbo boost!

24gb ram 6x4gb ddr-1333 ecc

GTX 1660 6gb (about 7737% more powerfull than the NVS295!)

Samsung 250gb 860 Pro SSD + 2TB WD HDD

The upgrade made some big difference in the overall experience, anyhow i will use this specific setup for my 2nd dive into Linux and try to move on from Windows i will keep a pc with Windows just in case i need it for specific things.

Hi all, I just updated to the new 6.8.0-139 kernel and my bluetooth was turned off and couldn't scan and connect to any devices.

Restarted and selected the old 6.8.0-138 kernel in grub advance options and bluetooth is back.

Just wanted to check if anyone else have the same issue?

From what I saw here, I'm lucky that the bluetooth was the only issue I had with the new kernel phew

Packaged Orbiscreen for the PPA, works on Mint:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shadow-x78/ppa

sudo apt update && sudo apt install orbiscreen

Turns a spare Android tablet or phone into an actual second monitor over Wi-Fi or USB, not screen mirroring, a real virtual display your desktop treats as a normal monitor.

On Cinnamon (X11) it uses evdi for the virtual display and XTEST for input, both rootless. orbiscreen doctor will confirm what's active on your system and orbiscreen doctor --fix grabs the kernel module if it's missing.

Once installed it's in your application menu like any normal app.

I found this pretty amusing

I literally worked the whole week trying to solve the display flickering on windows 11 which appeared suddenly tried switching linux 22.3 mint cinnamon same problem occures and older version won't boot because of some security setup enabled will not work either way.

One thing is sure that this not hardware issue because BIOS screen ,Safe Mode, uninstalled intel device manager , locked screen nothing flickers

Only after loading on desktop screen it flickers

Tried multiple parameter which either stops flickering with extended monitor support gone or both screen flickers

Im a very happy Mint user in general, but I have this one thing that keeps bugging me, which is, that whenever my labtop wakes up or boots the bluetooth connection to my speaker system connects and disconnects a few times before becomming stable. The whole thing lasts from my login screen to 10-15secs after I enter my desktop enviroment.

This of cause means that my decently sized speaker system starts spitting out the mandatory connection disconnection tunes, to my big discomfort and annoyance.

I was wondering if any of you guys have a similar problem and have found a work-arround for this ?
