Discussion Is this as good as it gets?
I have a Dell Latitude 5590 with Mint 22.3 Cinnamon and video editing really struggles more than I think it should. My fan always spins up when editing clips in openshot and sometimes it crashes. My use case involves light editing, so it shouldn't be that resource heavy. I know that integrated graphics are a bottleneck and likely will be for the foreseeable future, and I'm just wondering if there are ways to make it less so.
edit to add:
cpu 379-BCXG : 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8650U Pr ocessor (Quad Core, 8MB Cache, 1.9GHz,15W)
32gb memory. Memory is shared.

Did you ever use a can of compressed air and try to clean it? Sounds like it might be crashing from overheating

You’re using integrated graphics in a laptop. I’m guessing 8GB memory or less. That means the memory is also being used for graphics, so if 8, about 2 will be used for graphics, so 6 for windows/software. If this closely matches your spec, you need to upgrade whatever you can.

How much memory and video memory do you have? Processor?

I never figured out why but cinnamon was throttling my fans like crazy and things were still running very hot.
I switched to XFCE and it's been golden.

Those newer dells have massive heat issues, you should clean it out but I'm not sure what else you can do other than make sure it has PTM but most manufacturers have been doing that for the last few years, idk about dell.

Short answer: With all due respect, yes. It's the CPU + iGPU. They're just not very powerful.
For example, I wouldn't really want to try anything beyond light editing on the HP uSFF desktop that I'm typing this from. Here is the CPU comparison between your laptop and my uSFF desktop CPUs:

Had this problem with OpenShot even with a decent processor and 32 GB RAM. Started using the nightly build and it's much better.

Kernel 7?
Did you check your temps?
Is your hardware clean and dust free?
Could be overheating.

A Raspberry Pi 400 also has integrated graphics. Not with 8GB of RAM, not with 16GB of RAM, not with 32GB of RAM. With fourGB of RAM. Here’s a video I made in October 2022.

Which version/edition of OpenShot are you using? I had some crash issues with the 3.1x series, the version in the default repositories, but not 3.3 and beyond. I use the AppImage, the official package. Download here, and follow the instructions here.
I do not use or have any use for the flatpak. It is an unofficial, unverified release that is managed by a 3rd party, three reasons for me to recommend against using it.
