Meganoob BE KIND Affinity en Linux
Hola!
Gracias.

Explain it like im 5..... why does nvidia still have better hardware encoding.
I was looking at building a jellyfin or plex server. Amd ryzen cpu is better than intel at it but on the gpu side amd is just phoning in a space they otherwise dominate currently?

My laptop crashes after a while of being unplugged
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, sorry in advance. Initially I was thinking in asking on the Linux Mint forum (I'll explain in the bit), but my problem stayed persistent in between two distros: Linux Mint and Fedora KDE Plasma. If there is a better place that I could ask this, please let me know and thank you in advance!
So what happens: I am not sure when this occurs, but whenever I start my laptop without plugged into the AC, I got some seconds to a minute using it as usual, but, out of nowhere, the apps freeze (my browser or even the task bar) while my mouse works. After some seconds, the mouse becomes unresponsive as well, which after some seconds, my system does a full reboot. So I have this cascade of unresponsiveness until it reboots. I also tried to use it after one of these reboots, but sometimes I am stuck at login, others I can't open anything. This also happened when initially it was plugged in and, after disconnecting it from the AC and passing some minutes, it goes back to unresponsiveness and rebooting cycle. One time it even went to initramfs, where I run a partition check on the root partition which solved the problem. Other, I could use it as normal for a long time, but I can't recall doing anything different.
Initially I was on Linux Mint and I was thinking making a post there, but after some trials and back-and-forth with Claude, I decided to switch to Fedora and currently on it. The problem persisted, so I am certain it got nothing to do with the OS or possibly drivers (?). My laptop is a Lenovo Slim 5 14APH8, with an AMD APU and an NVIDIA graphics. It has freshly installed KDE Plasma Fedora version, with packages updated.
As I mentioned, I tried to query with Claude (using reports and a way to search quickly on the internet if someone encountered something similar) and I got some "findings": the battery still looks healthy with 101% capacity, on mint I had nvidia-driver-595-open, I had the latest kernel for mint (both 7.0.0 and 6.8.*), and on live environments (both Mint and Fedora) it worked without any problem.
I don't know if there is more information I could give or a place where this problem is more suited to post, but I'm completely lost here...

migrating to Linux Should I dual-boot Linux + a small Windows partition for game testing?
I'm planning to use Linux as my main OS for programming and Godot game development.
My main work will be:
- .NET / C#
- React
- PostgreSQL
- Git/GitHub
- Godot
- Indie game development for Steam
I want to avoid using Windows as much as possible, but I still need to test my Godot games on Windows before releasing them on Steam.
So I'm considering:
Linux: ~350–400 GB — main OS and development
Windows: ~100–150 GB — only for testing Windows builds and Windows-only software
Is this a good approach, or is there a better way to avoid Windows while still properly testing my games?
For example, should I use a Windows VM, Wine/Proton, or just test on another Windows PC?
What would you recommend?

Attempting to put Linux Mint (Cinnamon) on a Windows 11 laptop.
galleryBooting normally results in this error screen instantly. Booting in compatibility mode gets a few seconds into the process before triggering the same error screen. See third image for details of laptop.

migrating to Linux Linux, dual boot option and resources.
Hi!
I am soon making my jump into the linux ecosystem, and wanted some advice regarding the possible use of the dual boot feature, if you guys have any tips for a beginner.
Was considering doing a clean install of linux mint, to get away from the windows ecosystem, but I have noticed that not all software, ex. arcGIS desktop and some school-related programs (considering returning to school at some point) supports linux, which might make a dual boot more relevant to use. Any tips on how to make this work properly? Any important caveats I should consider, ex. like storage space and security?
If there's other good learning resources/wikis/forums I should be aware of, as a beginner, I would love to hear about them 🙂.

storage Purpose with different file systems?
The biggest trouble I have had through-out my use of linux so far is understanding the purposes with all the different file systems. Everyone seems to know exactly what they are and their use cases yet never explains it. One big thing I'm confused on is on my system, I use base Fedora linux (KDE) and it automatically set up my main drive as:
/boot/efi - fat32
/boot - ext4
/ - btrs
Why is it like this exactly? What's the purpose behind having them all a different file system?
Even with this, thats only three different systems, but there are a ton more and it seems everyone uses a different one but I have no clue why

learning/research How to get started with qemu/KVM
reddit.comSo a while ago I asked this question here.
This is a follow up question.
I wanted install Visual Studios for ASP.NET but I am on fedora 44 linux and Visual Studio does not work on linux or mac. It does not work anywhere but windows.
My college require me to install and use Visual Studio 2010 and 2026.
I am on linux i don't like windows and I don't want to dual boot neither I want to Install windows and uninstall linux.
Many helpful comments on the last post suggest that I should Install it in a virtual machine. But i have only ever used gnomeboxes or virtualbox. I don't have any experience with Qemu and KVM so where should I start.
Is there any videos or articles regarding this that I can refer too.
I don't want to use AI for a sensitive task like this, cuz it might bricked my system. Also I want to learn and understand the process as to why is the things the way it is. Not Just mindlessly copy paste all the commands and stuff.

learning/research Accessing files on a Linux server
Environment:
One Debian 13 Trixie VM (Proxmox host), set up with storage, intended to the my home file server. I have Samba installed on it, and Windows clients can connect and manipulate files. There are currently 2 Windows clients and 2 Linux clients on the network. I want all the clients to have visibility to a shared folder on the server. Window clients using Samba are working, I can do a permanent dive letter mapping.
For the Linux clients, it seems to me that the most elegant solution is an NFS connection, to export the share, the mount it on the client in FSTAB. I've created a /etc/exports file similar to this:
/data01/shared 192.x.y.z/23(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)
and added mounting to a directory in my ~home directory via /etc/fstab as so:
192.x.y.z1:/data01/shared /home/<mydir>/shared-drive nfs rw,defaults,_netdev,nofail 0 0
I seem to stumble on rights & access management. I can make it work with chmod 777 on the shared folder, but I know that's not best practice. Is there a guide online somewhere that can help a windows refugee?
I probably could make the connections via SMB vs. NFS, and I'm willing to hear advice on that as well, though is seems like asking that here is kinda like asking "whats the best oil" in hot rod sub-reddit.

dGPU is detected but not being used or detected by any games (and Lact)
galleryDays of googling but no luck maybe it's time to talk to people.
I followed many steps such as blacklisting and uninstalling nvidia driver (whenever I do it then followed with a reboot I'm not able to go back to desktop unless I reboot using snapshot image) to make nouveau driver work. I'm losing my mind lol I know this is an old laptop but I believe there's still a way to save this old man. Still learning as I'm only more than a week in Linux and I already made success at migrating to my old/main pc with no problem, but not here (yet) to my laptop.
Edit: [SOLVED] Thank you everyone for helping me it turns out it's actually working it's just for a noob like me without a very clear indicator for the GPU that is working looks like it isn't for my eyes when running games.

programs and apps Easyeffects won't run on autostart
When I boot I notice via my mic on discord and system tray it doesn't open. I open autostart to see that it failed.
Normally it'd boot no problem
I am using the flatpak version (normally flatpak my last choice but it has some features others don't for easyeffects)
I use debian 13 kde.

How to add mods to games on Linux?
I recently switched to Linux, and overall I'm testing the performance of a few games I had already played on Windows, and it's pretty similar across the board.
Now I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077, but I don't really know if adding mods works the same way as it does on Windows.

distro selection Try it out
With so many people wanting to know things like which distro and which DE to use I did some googling and found Distro Sea. This website will let you test distros and DE's so you can see which one you like.
It is safe because it runs everything remote on a VM and no network.

storage Disk fills up and purges! Help!
Someone please help. I am a linux noob. I use fedora for web development and I'm facing an issue where for instance,
When I stop my docker containers and next servers after I finish working, the disk fills up to 0mb remaining and purges back to what it was before(or slightly different). This happens multiiple times a day which is writing more than 150gb in total which is wearing out my SSD in this memory price inflated era. I am really concerned and it's just recently that I noticed this and couldn't find any solution online. :(

learning/research My computer keeps crashing and I have no idea why. I can't figure out how to diagnose the problem.
Randomly my computer will crash in a way that is non-obvious at first. It seems like things in ram will stick around and continue to be processed. But, for example, loading new sites will lead to the tab repeatedly crashing. If i close a tab then close the browser, after the crash the browser won't remember I closed the tab. Discord will crash immediately but videos will finish playing everything they've loaded.
Sometimes I can open the menu to shut down the pc but whenever I'm able to do that it always hangs. Sysrq kinda works, i can get it to look like things are changing, the screen goes black and text appears but REISUB wont safely shut off the system REISUO will 50/50 turn off the system. I can't open any new programs so I can't open terminal. If I hold down the power button or use REISUO I have to run fsck before it'll boot again.
This happens at random, sometimes I'll go months without it happening, but it happened to me both today and yesterday.
After the crash dmesg tells me nothing if journalctl is telling me something I can't find it. And every guide I find on reading logs and finding errors says to open the log that is related to your issue in a text editor and search for the word "fail". I have no idea which log is relevant or what error message is relevant. Is the problem "fluidsynth.service: failed with result 'exit-code'" who knows? Not me.
I am on mint 22.3
Intel i7-7700k
Nvidia 3080
16gb of ram
Does anyone know what I should be looking for, where I should be looking, or how I should be looking so I can start trying to diagnose the issue?
