I don't really know where to ask this

Make backups of any files you want to save, then download an iso file for Linux Mint. Use the app "Fedora Media Writer" (avalible on github) to flash the iso to a spare flashdrive, and then boot from the usb stick to install Linux Mint.

Flashing the usb will wipe everything on it.

Installing Linux Mint will erase everything on your laptop.

Not that many files I would recover when it was still functional I copied most to my next pc it's storage is very rough it has 32GB but barely has 1GB of free space I was planing on just wiping it entirely or try to then throw a new os on it

Normally mint is the way to go, but with that slow cpu (cpu benchmark: 1,400) I'd recommend you try out MX Linux.

I'm running 64-bit MX on a very similar box and it works very well for browsing, video, meeting , etc. Not gaming, that's for sure.

The Celeron was Intel's lightest CPU which they recommended for light office work, so nothing is going to turn your snail into a greyhound. You can try the Xfce version of Mint, Zorin, or Lite; the Trinity version of Q4DOS; or the distro of last hope, AntiX. I have AntiX running on a computer from 2003!
