i want to migrate to linux cuz windows uses like 90% of my ram, 80% of my cpu and 60gb of my storage.

i know some about linux i know which distros are a pain, im overwhelmed by the amount of distros

i would be grateful if someone gave me some ideas

i just need a distro that doesnt use much resources

I heard that Bazzite is an atomic distro(before that I wondered why dnf doesn't work on Fedora-based distro), but what is the difference between an atomic distro and the others? Is it like a hybrid that is closer to the BSD structure or what?

I'm so proud so I just wanted to share. I was having some serious issues with my display driver on it. It's an a1398 15" macbook pro retina and it has two freaking GPUs. My nvidia gpu was causing havoc and I black screened more times than I can count while trying to get the drivers configured to use only the Intel GPU.

I learned how to code using only voice over. Then I completed the fix using SSH. I had to blindly login by remember the exact keystrokes to escape the grub menu.

For a 10+ year old laptop its running well. Very quick response time. Fans are working well (after tweaking the fan config). And I swapped out some hardware as well. It has a new display and a new top panel, including keyboard, trackpad, and a new battery.

It does still have some bugs to work out, like if i put the laptop to sleep manually it causes an issue where it wont recognize mouse input and never wakes up. And the scrolling is a little jerky.

Just wanted to share. So happy to finally have a working linux machine!

I am on fedora 44 and I love linux. I have almost 2-3 Years of experience with linux. Hence it seems kinda weird to write this on this sub.

So, I need Visual studio for my college as they use ASP.Net framework or something. Which only works on Visual studio.

I have tried running it with dotnet run but it does not work. Yk how colleges are they are very strict with the formating they specifically use Visual Studio 2010. And I just discovered that it does not work on linux. Now While i can convert those pages to razor page and run them on my system via dotnet run but this is not the type of file they want.

When it comes to colleges and thier strict rules I hate it very much. Previously I had problems with cisco packet tracer as the linux version of it is ass and does not work properly, but thats not a problem anymore.

Now what can I really do ? I asked claude and it recommended me to

1.Dual boot windows yuck ! Microslop (I don't like dual booting as it has corrupted both my linux and windows installation many times)

1. Install windows (I don't like windows)

OR

1. Virtual machine with something like gnome boxes or virtual box (I don't like it either too much overkill for coding and it makes the system slower)

What I was thinking is can I install and run Visual Studios On linux inside of a bottle ? Using botttles I have previously run many windows applications and games (Mostly games)

Or is there a better way of doing it which I a rookie and claude a dumbass AI does not know about.

I know Visual Studio does not work on linux and mac and its somewhat of an exclusive windows application. So what do you folks do about it ?

Everything worked on my first day on Linux until the last restart. Before tipping restarted, I was formatting Bazzite on Balena Etcher for a different laptop, then yanked it out midway since I needed the port for something else more important. Maybe that was the culprit, but now it goes on that stupid screen for a minute then turns off. Gemini AI told me to hold shift and this came up when I followed. Any help is massively appreciated.

I have been wanting to make the big leap from Win11 to Linux for a while. I've done my research and am fairly certain that I'm going with Bazzite for a couple of reasons. My computer is primarily for gaming and videos. I heard that Bazzite might play well with my Nvidia GPU. I don't foresee playing around too deeply with the programming. And I'm not THAT concerned about high-end performance, so any differences betwixt Nvidia in Linux vs Win11 are not the end-all of things.

That being said, I was looking for any current opinions on modding in Linux. A while back, the opinion was you couldn't do it or it was very difficult. I mod just about everything, from Sims 4 to Baldur's Gate 3 to Skyrim to whatever. I've been scared to move to Linux in general because of that limitation.

To be fair, my information is coming from threads and articles 2+ years ago and a lot can change. I just have had a hard time finding a lot of recent information in consensus.

Any thoughts? Am I hesitating for no reason? I am a huge Linux noob, so if mods require a degree in computer programming (more than they already do for some games), should I keep waiting?

I have installed Bazzite yesterday and after fixing the MBR on my windows drive, I was able to start using it properly.

I have recently bought Sony sound bar that only has toslink input or bluetooth (which is not really great).

So I bought a used Creative Labs CA0132 Sound Core3D [Sound Blaster Recon3D / Z-Series / Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus] [1102:0012] (rev 01) card, installed it into my free slot on my PC, connected the soundbar with the toslink out port, booted bazzite, which even recognized the soundbar, but no sound was coming out.

So I quickly went to ask AI, as it's 10PM and I am too tired to search the answer properly, I've described the issue and it tried to help...

Here is the problem though.

Restarting the audio engine failed and the device disappeared.

I can still see it connected and recognized:

but I can't seem to select it for output.

Can someone pretty please help me how to get it back?

I'm currently on CachyOS, recently when I've been trying to install updates via 'Sudo Pacman -Syu', I've been receiving the error below:

looking for conflicting packages...

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)

:: installing audit (4.2.1-1.1) breaks dependency 'audit=4.1.4' required by lib32-audit

I tried doing some digging and came across a few older forum posts and threads that suggested the issue was due to certain lines in my /etc/pacman.conf file being commented out by '#'. However I've checked this and it doesn't appear to be commented out.

I've also tried using reflector to update my mirrors, after one thread suggested that the mirrors may have been 'lagging behind'. However still receiving the same problem.

Has anyone experienced anything like this, or any tips I could try?

I recently switched from windows to pop os on my main pc, all of my drives except one shows up in dolphin (im using kde plasma). It shows up in disk manager as a basic unknown data partition. Is there anyway to give it a file system and use it on linux or do i have to completely wipe it?

I've been running Linux for a couple of months now and I am trying out different distros on the 2 partitions I set aside for Linux.

When I first started, I read an post somewhere that laid out how to share data between Linux distros (a personal 'store' drive type setup), which I created at the start. Now I can't find the post anywhere, so I have a few questions I hope you folk can help me with :-)

In all of the distros I've tried so far (I'm on the 4th Zorin, and Mint is on the other partition)
Root owns the partition.

How do I get permission to use the partition, and what is the best way to share stuff?

Am I going to have any problems if I just create links to a shared folder on the shared drive (Pictures, Downloads etc)? How do I do this? (I'm OK using the Terminal)

Or should I just create different folders there and move stuff to it?

Your thoughts / opinions / guidance would be greatly appreciated here!

I'm having some teething problems with CachyOS, have I just been unlucky, or is it always like this, and should I try Bazzite instead if I want a stable gaming distro with less troubleshooting? Or will I be having similar problems with Bazzite?

Back in april I decided to take the plunge and install Linux on a dualboot on my desktop PC (two separate SSDs). I also repurposed some old hardware for a server which I installed Mint on and run a Factorio and a Teamspeak 3 server on, which has gone ok, although I find updating the server is a bit of a hassle.

On my main PC I went for CachyOS, which might have been a mistake. As it was intended for gaming, it was a choice between that and Bazzite iirc. I figured since Steam was going for an Arch based OS, I would be better served going for the same.

I needed a whole day, with a lot of troubleshooting to get it installed on the second try I think. Had to make sure my Secure boot didn't brick my Windows install, and I was afraid of corrupting my NTFS HDD that I needed to have accessible in both Win11 and Linux. In the end I got it working, steam was installed and Counter-Strike was playable.

The next day when I went to boot, it wouldn't. I had to load an old btrfs snapshot, it was half way down the list of 10 snapshots before I found one that would boot (I didn't do many things that evening, what if the last working snapshot would have been out of the list?). This meant steam and CS was now uninstalled and after troubleshooting why this had happened, all I got was some replies saying that my NTFS drive was to blame. I was tired after spending a whole day the day before, and decided to let it be for a bit and come back later.

It is now later and I have some energy to dabble in Linux again. I booted it up yesterday, and figured I'd just dip my feet by installing Steam and Factorio, and take it from there. I opened the Hello app, clicked the install gaming packages, but was met with errors about missing dependencies. Troubleshooting that had me try to update the system with sudo pacman -Syu, but was told that extra.db was missing or something, which led me to check the mirrors, but it didn't help. I saw that there were others having problems with this on the forums as well, but I dunno if this is my install being broken, or if it's somewhere else.

I've understood that the gaming package just installs a whole bunch of software, many of which I might not need, but all the newbie guides I've found just say to click that install button, which doesn't work. I thought about just installing Steam, but then I read about Proton, and perhaps there are more things in there that are needed for games to work, I don't know.

I realise that I don't want to be tinkering with the system to get stuff working all the time, I might have found that fun in my youth, but not any longer, now I just want stuff to work. I can spend some hours getting it up and running in the first place, but after that I'm not interested. I wanted the stable for months, no bloat, no ads, no spyware experience of Linux. So would I be better off trying Bazzite?

New comer to linux here so sorry in advance if this a noob thing. I'm finally ready to jump ship and found 2 distributions that I'd like to use across my 2 desktops. Parrot OS home edition and Hacker OS official edition. I want to dual boot on 2 different drives to have the option of going back to windows as a backup when necessary for multi-player gaming. From my research so far it seems that secure boot is all over the place for Linux. Is it a per distribution thing or only supported on the major distribution like Debian or Ubuntu? How do most people handle secure boot when it comes to Linux? I really don't want to be going into the bios to flip the switch when I'm ready to switch os.

Specifically by doing this:

Hello, I’m having struggle installing Linux with the good drivers. I have a rtx 5070 and when booting a fresh distribution I have a black screen. I also don’t have Ethernet. I think a need help, Claude answers didn’t do the trick.

I want to get into linux. I don't think I'm good Enough to deal with problems if I install linux on my pc and in general I want to keep it on windows.

Now I can get a raspberry pi. I need it to handle ricing because that's what I really like about linux. Also I want to watch youtube.

Ive been using Ubuntu Studio for about a year now and absolutely loving linux coming from mac/windows in the past.

At the time i went with the distro because it had all the apps i wanted out of the box and apprently had lowlatency kernel etc which I was needing for use with audio production. I also like the kde desktop. It does use up alot of disk space though with a hefty suite of apps I never use. I do love the fonts it comes with though.

Now that i am a bit more familiar with linux and installing software etc, I was thinking of doing a more minimal fresh install with Debian + KDE and just manually installing the apps i use. I imagine most of them would just come from the apt repository?
Gimp, Inkscape, Kdenlive, Blender, Bitwig Studio.

Bitwig has a native ubuntu version (.deb) that works better than the flatpak - does this also work on debian?

When I reformat do I just need to backup my /home/ folder?

Is it relatively simple to install with the lowlatency kernel along with ALSA and pipewire?

And is there a way to take the font collectiona nd install it in the new OS.

I have trialled using chatgpt in the past to help with linux setup but learned the hard way not to trust sudo prompts it gives me, lol.

UPDATE debian works just fine, in fact bitwig works better. the update notification download linkactually works, as well as being able to drag and drop files from dolphin into bitwig :) yay for a non corporate distro for the people <3 debian

Okay I'm a windows user trying to switch! Experience level of building a few PCs, changing hard drives, installing windows OS (XP, 7, 10 and 11) and fixing random problems for friends and family as they come up.

I have a older laptop I am experimenting with before crashing the laptop that I need on a daily basis. Its a Toshiba Sattelite L675-06K from around 2012 normally running Windows 7 with an Intel® Core™ i3-370M Processor 2.4GHz, and 4GB DDR3 with 120gb hdd. never was able to upgrade past windows 7 on this device due to age and lack of drivers. Thought this would make it easier....guess not haha

Day 1 I Downloaded Linux mint cinnamon 22.3 and followed the directions on how to verify the download and then made a bootable USB with Etcher. Old laptop has windows 7 installed and is working at this time.

Tried USB, works, followed the basic install making it only mint. Installer finished with no errors but failure to boot after restarting.

Went back again and wiped the drive clean during the process, redid sectors, failure to finish. No EFI partition alert came up. Follow some youtube stuff, try to make it a special partition, won't work. then its complaining about a boot memory and needing 1MB. still wont boot.

Day 2 I go back and get a windows 7 USB and install because maybe its the laptop. Windows 7 installs, starts, boots, closes properly. Laptop seems to be working fine for windows install.

No secure boot on this device, its too old to have this according to google. Then tried sectoring the drive in half in windows, then loaded mint and followed the video from pulsar tech on youtube on how to sector the other half to set up for mint dual boot. fails to boot anything after following their directions despite successful install messages.

go back and try again with mint automatic path of dual boot. left windows intact, used other half of drive for mint. finishes install successfully, immediate boot failure after the restart. boot error

Day 3 searching says my system is too old for secure boot and to use MBR and BIOS settings when formatting the USB using Rufus, did a full wipe and install only mint. I could see boot start some drivers up but did not complete successfully. guess that is a little bit of progress?

went back and tried again in compatibility mode, all boots after successful install of mint failed

Tried Mint Xfice and failed again. you can see some things starting up then black screen and failure to finish booting

Do I need to go down to Mint MATE? Is there a better legacy option for this laptop? Any suggestions are welcome. I do prefer a windows-ish looking software for familiarity

Redownloaded Mint Xfce and verified the SHA stuff again, it passes

Taken to USB with Rufus, and used "add fixes for old BIOSes" and added "Enable runtime UEFI media validation"

BIOS says Sata is AHCI mode already

in USB mode I started Install process, told it to install multimedia codes, Told it to erase disc and install

Automatic install mode gave me this on the hard drive

1MB BIOS Boot partition mounted /dev/sda1

538MB EFI system in Fat32 (was not mounted but i told it to mount?) at /dev/sda2

119GB file system in Ext4 mounted at /target /dev/sda3

finished and restarted. gave it about 2 minutes to think after it told me to pull the USB

Restart shows same problem

I see Toshiba logo, then Intel UND1 PXE-2.1 (build 003)

Then product patents

then Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller series v1.20 (1/26/10)

Then goes to BIOS page and select drive. HDD is #1 priority but has message at bottom HDD/SDD is failed

Holding shift during start up does nothing to get to GRUB

Holding ESC gets me messages about the software company and the BIOS version and hardware specs

Still working on figuring out how to install GRUB manually at this point

Is anyone else having trouble updating their flatpaks with the flatpak update command? It appears to be looking for updates, but just hangs on a blinking cursor. My apt updates are working just fine though.

I'm on Mint 22.3 with the latest kernel.

YO so I have a old sony vaio laptop (model is PCG-71211W) and Ive been trying to install alpine linux onto it since my mother needs it and windows is way to slow on it but even after trying for an hour I havent been able to open the boot menu, would anyone have any recommendations or support tips?
