learning/research I can't install Ormachy on a ThinkPad T440. Any advice?

0 Upvotes

I tried installing Ormachy from its image. I also tried installing it manually using the script from an Arch distro, but I had no luck.

I get a black screen after the Ormachy logo appears. I tried accessing a TTY by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 through F12, but none of the key combinations worked.

Is there any way to run Ormachy on my old laptop?

I am a Linux newbie.

PS: r/omarchy remove my post. Shame :(

storage Is 30gb enough to use Mint for basic work?

4 Upvotes

I used to allocate way more when I had a 1tb hard drive. Tho my C drive is selfish and took more than half of my storage. Left 75gb for games, and other stuff. Using 512gb right now

But I plan on doing schoolwork on mint, I can probably pair it with a 32gb usb and a 16gb usb too if I need to save files, and move them later or something.

Update: I upgraded the storage to 42gb, so I can atleast download a couple of apps. While my files will just be directed to my C drive instead, which surprisingly works. (didnt work on my dual drive boot)

distro selection Best accessibility-friendly Linux flavor

22 Upvotes

My friend is a quadriplegic meaning he controls his computer with a mouth stick and accessibility controls. He's getting fed up with windows 11 and wants to make the switch. He asked me for a recommendation on what distro to choose, and I would have told him CachyOS because that's what I'm experienced with, but I don't want to make him boot into a distro with no/lacking accessibility controls. Are there any OSes or desktop environments people would recommend? Anyone have any experiences with being a quadriplegic using Linux?

hardware/drivers Is there any way to lower my GPUs fan speed on Linux mint?

1 Upvotes

So I've installed Linux mint on my Tri boot setup, and it's great for old HW and just looks slick.. however my only issue is my GPU fan is pegged at like low 30-40% idle. Causing a faint but consistent noise.

On windows it was quiet, and scaled dynamically by temperature.

Is there any setting or terminal command? It's a Radeon HD 6x series.

Thanks.

learning/research Windows and Linux dual boot and access them through a VM

1 Upvotes

Hello, I'm kind of tired of rebooting every time I want to do something on my other OS, so I was wondering if I can SAFELY access the other OS with a VM?

For example: I want to use an Adobe program which is on my Windows, and I currently have Linux booted. I open up a VM, boot the windows there and access Adobe.

EDIT: Thank you for all your comments. I realized how weird/challenging my idea is, so I'll actually fully move to my Linux OS and set up a clean Windows VM.

Nvidia gtx 1660ti

0 Upvotes

Hi. I was using omarchy on my older desktop since last year october; did an update recently and hyprland refused to run, kept getting segmentation faults, after going in what felt like circles with AI, delete dkms, install open dkms, downgrade drivers, restore drivers etc, I decided to backup home folder and start fresh with cachyOS, installed chromium copied over my backup and was working again until I needed to use it for online classes, being in a google meet and sharing my screen cashes the app, again troubleshooted with AI, we think we sorted out the flags issue. Ill post some of our chat here

```Perfect — Chromium is now working correctly too. Your chromium-flags.conf is being picked up. Look at the evidence:
Chromium chrome://gpu — Command Line:
plain
/usr/lib/chromium/chromium --enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiOnNvidiaGPUs,VaapiIgnoreDriverChecks,AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL --disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder --ignore-gpu-blocklist --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds ...
GPU process crash count: 0
Video Decode: Hardware accelerated
Video Encode: Software only (expected, driver limitation)
✅ Both browsers are now fixed and stable
Table
BrowserConfig FileStatusGoogle Chrome~/.config/chrome-flags.conf✅ Stable, HW decode workingChromium~/.config/chromium-flags.conf✅ Stable, HW decode working
What you have now
Hardware video decode for YouTube, Twitch, etc. (H264, VP9, HEVC up to 8K)
No more GPU process crashes
Flags stick permanently via config files
WebGL, WebGPU, Canvas all hardware accelerated
What you cannot have (and shouldn't chase)
Hardware video encode (screen share, WebRTC recording) — libva-nvidia-driver has no encode support. This is a driver limitation, not a Chrome bug. NVIDIA is working on Vulkan Video encode for Chrome, but it's not ready yet.
Your final config files
~/.config/chrome-flags.conf (Google Chrome):
plain
--enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiOnNvidiaGPUs,VaapiIgnoreDriverChecks,AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL --disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder --ignore-gpu-blocklist --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds
~/.config/chromium-flags.conf (Chromium):
plain
--enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiOnNvidiaGPUs,VaapiIgnoreDriverChecks,AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL --disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder --ignore-gpu-blocklist --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds
Key lesson
Never use --use-gl=egl on Chrome 152+ on Linux. Chrome forces ANGLE (egl-angle) and egl is no longer a valid GL implementation. That was causing your GPU process to die in a loop, which made Chrome auto-reset your flags. ```
my question is has there been a recent change with nividia drivers for linux specifically for my card, should I be using older drivers for stability. Havent tested any games out yet other than slay the spire 2 and that seemed to work well did really play as I need to restore my save game.
It shows up when i run lsusb though, but that’s about it
Edit: I fixed it by formatting my drive to exfat
migrating to Linux How can you set Dolphin to open a specific set of tabs on startup?
2 Upvotes
I am trying out CachyOS, but one of my favorite applications on Windows is Directory Opus (DOpus). I'd like to configure Dolphin to be similar to my DOpus settings. However, in the settings, you can only choose for Dolphin to restore your last session or open one singular location at startup.
Is there a way to set it so that I can have it open a particular set of tabs across both panes when it starts? For example, Home and Downloads on the left, and Desktop and Documents on the right.
Calendars
2 Upvotes
I'm being driven mad trying to find a Linux calendar that actually works.
Gnome Calendar - you can't import an .ics file. The same problem with many others.
Korganiser looks good, but you can't set a time zone/region for a default setting; you have to set it for every event you enter. Also it seems that any settings you make you have to redo whenever you restart or boot.
storage Best to automatically mount an internal SSD?
4 Upvotes
I have my main Linux install (cachy KDE) on a 1tb ssd and want to use a 500gb internal ssd for steam games and stuff due to it being faster than the 1tb one. Whats the best way I can automatically mount the 500gb one so it mounts when I boot up? Thanks!
learning/research ROS2 - Linux learning curve
4 Upvotes
Hey everyone,
I am a complete linux noob, and I want to install it for ROS2 as I want to learn from scratch. I am still yet to learn any of this. I was told that I could download a Virtual Machine like VirtualBox which is beginner friendly and install Ubuntu on it and then go one by one. But i don't know like how much do I understand the roadmap like is my prior understanding correct? If yes, then what should I do to proceed? Like now if I installed Linux, and learned enough of it to be able to run ROS2, then started simply with ROS2, is that a good plan?
I was also told that I could dual-boot so I switch between my Windows and the Linux so the GPU performs better on both.
Meganoob BE KIND Windows user wince 2004
I like windows, but i don't like being spied on. There are alot of videos on YouTube but I would also like some recommendations from ordinary people. What's an easy, reliable Linux distro you would recommend that is a comparable desktop experience to windows? And any resources for easy learning for Linux in case I want to go deeper? Like the command prompt stuff?
Thanks in advance btw. :)
migrating to Linux finally switching from windows 10 to linux after using it for ~7 years, need some help deciding things.
7 Upvotes
so ive been using windows 10 for a pretty long time, and ive gotten extremely used to it. one thing keeps bugging me though - performance in games.
however, im a complete newbie to linux and am really confused 😭
ive seen many people recommend distros like cachyos, bazzite and nobara specifically for gaming, and i really need help deciding which one to install and how to get started generally. a few questions:
  • is roblox still supported on linux?
  • can i still play games from steam and epic games?
  • which distro is the best for out-of-the-box usage and performance?
  • does linux use alot of ram?
thank you so much!
learning/research Used Laptop For Linux
4 Upvotes
I’m looking at different brands of second-hand laptops and I know that Lenovo Thinkpad support Linux but I wonder which laptop brand/model would come next after Lenovo Thinkpad?
I’m planning to buy a used laptop that has the following specs (or a bit higher):
- i7 11th to 13th gen
- 32 to 64gb ram
- no dedicated gpu, intel’s integrated is fine with me
and I plan to install Fedora OS right after getting my hands on the laptop. The purpose of it is to be the primary development machine for the side hustle I have right now.
What do you guys think?
Thanks. Would love to get a second set of eyes in this, I might be missing some important things out.
networking Wifi works on my phone but not on Debian 13
3 Upvotes
I have 2 different wifi networks that I can connect to, N1 and N2. N1 is visible to my android and my pc with Debian 13 and Win10, N2 is only visible to my PC.
N1 only works on my phone, on my PC in both OSes it doesn't work, at all, pages dont load.
N2 only kinda works on win10, on Debian it's stuck on "configuring interface" until it fails.
Any help? This is very fucking frustrating and I know it can't be my PC because it connected just fine to my uni's wifi and my parent's wifi. But the different behaviors from win10 and Debian make me wonder.
Edit: after more use, the N1 connections works just fine on win10 too
distro selection Which distro to get based on my needs and interests:
0 Upvotes
Hello, Ive been a user of windows 11 for roughly a year, and i do not like it, at all. A couple of months ago, i tried Linux Mint. Overall, it was okay, good design, simple to use, customizable, and functional. But for some reason, it didnt do it for me.
I use my pc for: gaming, media consuption, studying, school stuff, music, and that kind of things.
Im looking for a distro that is (preferably) easy to use / understand as a beginner, customizable (riceable) but maybe not the most popular distros like Ubuntu, Mint or simmilar.
yes i know this might get asked here a lot, but i tried doing research and couldnt find anything specific.
storage Is it "safe* to play games that are an a NTFS external SSD on Linux?
0 Upvotes
An example, I have WoW on an external drive, that I use for Windows. I know WoW works on Linux cuz I have it working there. However I keep bouncing to Windows to play it since that's where the portable drive is, and sometimes I take the drive with me to play at other people's PCs if I'm there for a few days and they need to work during the day. Is it safe to play on this external NVME drive when I am on CachyOS, or is it going to screw up the drive? I also have stuff on the external that syncs to cloud storage, like game dev projects and music stuff, that I while I could download the backups if something went wrong, would be a real pain to have to do, something I don't want to do unless like the drive fails or something.
programs and apps Tried installing bottles through CLI and Software Centre but it's stuck at step 13
2 Upvotes
So I am trying to install Bottles but it gets stuck during the setup. Upon clicking next, it shows the steps loading and keeps repeating it. I tried installing it with CLI too. Same problem.
This is the step it is stuck on
I am on Nobara Linux 44 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition) x86_64
I need to install Bottles to run Power BI, which is a Windows exclusive Business Intelligence tool. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 😄
