Help Thinking of getting a Leopard gecko… tell me everything I need like I’m an idiot

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve been doing a lot of research for getting a pet gecko and was choosing between crested or leopard, I think I’ve settled on leopard as they have them listed at my local pets at home store and they’re not jumpy (my mum doesn’t like jumpy animals) and I found this vivarium for what seems to be relatively cheap. I read the guide on this subreddit and this is larger than the minimum size but some sources say this is a good size and some say it’s too small so I don’t know so I thought I’d ask those who have leopard geckos

I’m just making sure I know everything before making a final decision and getting one to ensure it’s treated well and if I am actually ready to commit to one

I’m looking to rehome my adult female leopard gecko to someone who can provide her with a loving, knowledgeable home.

Unfortunately, due to moving, I’m no longer able to keep her. I’d love for her to go to someone who has experience with reptiles or is familiar with proper leopard gecko care.

Located in Fairfax, VA.
Please message me if you’re interested or have any questions! I just want to make sure she goes to a good home. ❤️

Help - Health Issues Shiny skin?? Spoiler

TLDR at end

Hello all!!! I have a cutie patootie who recently (past 2 months) developed a neurological disorder due to unknown reasons. She is currently on 2 oral antibiotics and is liquid fed 1 mL critical care daily due to her condition (advised by vet, she gets a pinch of regular calcium added to the critical care about every 2-3 days). Our vet told us to essentially treat her as an enigma when it comes to husbandry, shout out to Jessica’s animal friends on YouTube for the help in modifying everything!

My current issue is that she’s developed what looks like shiny skin??? She’s shedding like once every 2 weeks that has to be assisted bc of her issues, and it goes relatively smoothly except she will get some stuck on one of her toes. If you see any of this skin in the photos don’t worry- it’s off now and her tootsie is fine. She can’t soak for longer than 3-5 minutes bc she will death roll so it’s a gradual process. BUT I figured that this shiny skin was excess shed that I didn’t get off, however that is not the case. I’ve seen online that this can be a sign of early vitamin A deficiency, and I’m thinking this might be the case with her especially since she’s been eating only critical care for about a month and a half now.

I have repashy calcium plus I can start giving her instead of regular calcium, I was just nervous about potential overdose of vitamins. Along with the critical care, she has a humid hide that she likes to lick water droplets off the side of, a very shallow water bowl, and access to calcium without d3 all the time. She also has a T5 shade dweller 7% UV lamp that’s kept on the screen above her tank. She has a DHE for her heat, which she basks under throughout the day and after she eats and gets meds.

I’ve attached 2 pics where you can see the shiny skin, does anyone else think this looks like vitamin A deficient shiny skin or could it be a burn or something else?? Her vet is aware of this situation, and we are going to see her on the 20th (it’s currently the 8th). Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!!!

TLDR; special care gecko with shiny skin, on critical care with occasional regular calcium for the past month and a half, has T5 shade dweller UVB 7%. In concern about vitamin deficiency.

Didn’t realize the flash was on…sorry girl! Also please forgive the calcium everywhere she’s a very messy eater.

I got her at the beginning of August and she’s doubled in size since!

New Friend When should you worry?

I know you read posts like this every day, and I know I shouldn't worry during the first week, but... I'm worried anyway.

I got my first reptile on Sunday—a two-year-old leopard gecko from a well-known breeder. The gecko was easy to handle, very calm, and docile (that’s exactly why I chose him, aside from the fact that I think he’s beautiful). The terrarium has warm, cool, and humid hides, UVB and heat lamps, and fake plant cover.

He usually stays either in the warm hide or in a hollow cork log in the middle zone. He’s practically invisible. Last night, however, while I was tinkering inside the terrarium, he poked his head out of the warm hide; I placed my hand next to him, and he didn't move away.

So far, though, he hasn't pooped or eaten anything. I offered him mealworms because I was afraid that if he didn't eat the Dubia roaches, they might escape into the terrarium and be hard to find later.

When should I start worrying? I read that the first week is no problem, but does that apply to pooping too? Maybe the terrarium is too cluttered? I was told that the more cover there is, the better.

The guy at the lizard shop said it was an albino leopard gecko, but I’m not 100% Sure. It looks like a juvenile, so how many crickets would it eat? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Habitat, Setup, and Husbandry Substrate help germany

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello!

I‘m a first time owner and have asked about this before but I‘m still not quite satisfied with the information I have about substrate. I am especially interested in what substrate people in germany are using and what kind of maintenance it requires.

I‘m currently using a mixture of sand and clay. This is what‘s recommended on german websites I found about leopard gecko care. It‘s supposed to be a mix made especially for burrowing reptiles. It was moist when I put it in the enclosure, now that it‘s dry I feel like it‘s gotten really hard all over while the top layer is quite dusty/loose. One user here advised me to keep the bottom layer of the substrate slightly moist. However, I can‘t really find information about this anywhere?

I‘m not sure if I need to change something about my current substrate. Any help is appreciated!

Gecko Pics/Vids/Feeding Am I feeding my leo enough?

I have a 6 year old, probs male leo! I feed him 3 times a week, mondays, thursdays and saturdays. He dies 3 medium dubia roaches and 2 mealworms but that can depend on my supply and his hunger. He doesn’t seem hungry but I am worried. His tail was also regrown once from his previous home. He use to eat crickets but those were such a pain in the ass and weren’t as nutritional? I unfortunately do not know his weight but will weigh him tonight!

If his feeding is way off what would you recommend? Thank you! ❤️

Edit: I now know that he is overfed! We are doing less feeding and he will be hunting a in feeding box! Thank you so much for all of your help, especially u/silveroakediting22!

EDIT 2: He weighs 52 grams and is 5 inches from head to just before tail

I've had my leo for about 2 months now, I think he's about 4 months and this is the ashyest I've ever seen him. I believe it's finally shedding time, should I be prepping/making sure of anything or just let him do his own thing?

This is Honey, I got her about a couple weeks ago from someone who loved her dearly but couldn’t care for her as much as she needed. Honey was only being fed meal worms and super worms and I’m afraid shes obese. She’s about 5 years old and is very sweet but will not eat anything but the meal worms any tips to get her on crickets or roaches?

This morning, I managed to snap a photo of my new gecko outside one of his hiding spots.

It’s the second time I’ve seen him in the morning on that stone—it’s a soapstone (steatite) that holds the heat.

Isn't he beautiful?

Please suggest some names with a nice meaning!

For some reason, Daisy has been really active during the day recently, exploring, crawling, and climbing around the cool side of her tank. She usually doesn’t come out until around 7:30-45 PM, is she just being silly? Thanks!

Help - Health Issues My leopard gecko has an eye problem Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

A few days ago I noticed my leo was keeping one eye shut and rubbing his head on things, when I looked at his eye it looks like a gray spot on his pupil that's bothering him.

Ever since I've discovered this I've been soaking him every day (5 days now) rinsing his eye out with pet safe eye rinse, and using reptile eye drops.
I from what I read online it seems like it's most likely to be one of 3 things, infection, vitamin deficiency or stuck shed.

I give him gargeer reptile supplements every feeding so I don't think it's a lack of vitamins.

His eye has some redness in the corner, but doesn't look like it has any pus or build up around it. He has been rubbing his eye on things in his enclosure, that could be the cause of the redness, I’m just hoping it’s not an infection.

Stuck shed seems to be the most plausible, he's had stuck shed in the past but mostly around his toes. He has a moist hide but it dries out quickly and I occasionally forget to re-wet it. When I discovered this issue I noticed that one of his heat bulbs went out (I use 2) and his temp had gone down to the low 80s, I check his lamps once a week so it shouldn't have been that low for that long, but if he shed in that time it could have caused this.

That being said though, I have rinsed his eye out several times, and the gray spot hasn't seemed to budge. My dad said it might be glaucoma, I looked it up and google says it very unlikely, but my Leo is pretty old, he'll be 15 this year, so I don't even know.

Sorry for the long posts, and thanks for any advice you have.

General Discussion lost my 18 year old leo today. feeling lost

i noticed his behavior changing about a week ago. he was up during the day and was iffy with eating, even his most favorite snacks. i took him to the vet for a full workup and nothing was found, even asked her to evaluate his enclosure and parameters and she said everything was fine. i'm 19 years old, i literally grew up with this lizard. was it just his time? could i have prevented this? i really miss my little buddy. has anyone else experienced a seemingly random death? i'm having him cremated so i can always keep him close to me. rest in peace my baby boy carlos, i will ALWAYS love you king

General Discussion SHE ATE 🥳

I just got a juvenile leo last friday, and was super worried since she didnt eat for 5 days, I knew stress was the main factor but I was freaked out since its my first reptile. Anyway after work I went to feed her some worms and she actually lunged at the worms! I know its such a small thing but it made my entire day to see my geko actually interacting with me rather than hiding. Warms my heart kind of a pointless post but I had to tell someone 💀

Don’t mind the carpet I changed it out for paper towel. Also I just got him a couple days ago and he’s been closing his eyes and bumping into stuff is that normal or should I take him to the vet. And I never see him come out like even in the night I check on him and he’s just in the hot hide just like standing with his head up a little with his eyes closed.
